Around SBN: Transfer Rumor: Bolton On Verge of First Signings

Really no shock here. Devils are officially under the cap by $84,168. Adam Mair isn't signed, and can't be (unless a minor league deal). The Devils have 20 players on the roster, with 11 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies.

Two things.

a) these two (hopefully) won’t be out all year. We won’t be paying $0 in cap space for both…

b) 11 forwards, 7 d-men is not going to work all year. Lou still needs to make a move, I don’t see why he doesn’t put White in the minors. Having Zubrus center the third line and a COMPLETE fourth line makes the Devils extremely deep.

There’s also the somewhat-of-a-fact that Tedenby and Josefson may be called up at some point this year, and both are above minimum salary.

I don’t see why he doesn’t put White in the minors.

Because White’s a quality player and still a part of the top 4 on defense?

John, this is a business, you know that…

that is why eventually the Devils will be forced to part ways with a quality player. Someway, White could be recalled. Lou and MacLean must take a chance with young guys.

Someway, White could be recalled.

Colin White would never make it through recall waivers, when you consider what similar defensemen command on the market. Even with his eye injury limiting him, he’s worth more than $1.5 million/season in today’s NHL. Do you really want to take the risk of more dead cap space when the pile we have is already creating problems?

So far it looks like he isn’t part of the top 4..Tallinder and Greene are together and Volchenkov and Urbom are playing together as well. I really don’t think white is even a quality player..agree with other guy that he should be in minors instead of zubrus if one of them had to go.

Let’s check out ice times after say 15 or 20 games and see how wrong you are.

John, there are those of us who think White is perhaps somewhat over-paid, but still without a doubt an NHL caliber defenseman, and those who do not, and ne’er the twain shall meet.

Also, Taormina has been assigned to Albany, and Adam Henrique has been recalled.

What? Are you sure you didn’t misspell Zharkov? Henrique? Really?

Capgeek lists Zharkov’s salary as $850K. Henrique’s salary is $845 333, so the Devils are saving about $4k in cap space. And that’s alot when you’re up against the cap.

True. And playing around with CapGeek’s calculator, he fits while Zharkov (or Tedenby or Josefson) doesn’t. Shame, I would have liked 12 NHL players at forward instead of 11 and a question mark.

Why don't they just sign Mair, he can't be asking for more than 800K?

because he wasn’t signed at 3 PM this afternoon when cap-friendly rosters had to be submitted to the NHL. He may still be, but nobody outside of a small circle of Devils employees and an agent know for sure.

re: Henrique.

I like Taormina, he’ll be back.

Thats too bad..I would have liked to see Taormina provide some offence from the defence for us. Henrique being recalled is odd. But could be because he has lower salary than Josefson?

by zach parise9 on Oct 6, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Henrique’s $54,167 less than Josefson.

he’s much lower than that when you consider the bonus cushion. TG speculates that this is a move ‘on paper’, though why, i’m not sure.

This must be because a contract with Mair is going to be finalized. There’s no way Henrique will be playing on Friday; he must just be holding a roster spot until Mair is signed. I mean no preseason games equals a spot on the roster?

Can’t wait until all this stuff is behind us and we can start focusing on the games. Until then, In Lou We Trust.

there is not enough money to sign Mair unless it is a minor league contract

Is it possible that Henrique was brought up just to fill out a roster spot until the contract with Mair is reached? That brings up the confusing thought of why Henrique was brought up and not, say Zharkov? Just boggles my mind (as much as I like Henrique) why the moves was made now.

by DeboDevil on Oct 6, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I am a BIG fan of Henrique

I am a fan because he was a key part for Windsor,

however, I am really worried they are throwing him into a game that actually means something without giving him any preseason action.

It is sad that numbers won’t allow Josefson because we all know he is better otherwise the Devils would have let Henrique stick around a bit longer.

Should be interesting to see how we do. I am a little worried that Lou just doesn’t have any buyers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lou doesn’t have any buyers. The only teams with any cap space left at this juncture are the ones with self-imposed spending limits, or rebuilding teams with mostly entry-level contract players. These teams would probably gladly welcome the fairly-compensated Langenbrunner, who only has 1 year left, but won’t bite for 2 or 3 years of somewhat overpaid White or Zubrus, as they’ll have to resign their youngsters to larger contracts in the next couple of years.

I was hoping there’d be some GM out there that owed Lou for something…
