Poll: Which New Jersey Devil Should Sit for Vladimir Zharkov?

Vladimir Zharkov - The Return Of... (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

On December 27, 2010, as reported earlier today by Tom Gulitti at Fire & Ice, the New Jersey Devils have officially recalled Vladimir Zharkov.

The young Russian winger put in 40 games of work last season, largely on the fourth line. Yet, despite his limited minutes and his total lack of goals, he was a more useful player than some may realize.   He had the best on-ice Corsi rate among all Devils last season - both unadjusted (15.36) and adjusted for zone start (12.289).  Yes, even better than Zach Parise.  Zharkov also led the Devils in penalties drawn-to-taken ratio last season, having drew 15 while taking only 1 all season.  Even his 15 drawn calls was good for second on the team last season, behind Parise who drew 39 calls.

Between those two stats alone, it was clear that in spite of what usually comes with fourth line duty - weak competition, weak teammates - when Zharkov was on the ice, the puck was going in the right direction and he helped get 2 minutes of offense for the team from time to time.  That's a positive value for a fairly quick and responsible winger; a big reason why he's a favorite here at In Lou We Trust.   Recall that Kevin was wondering why he wasn't called up back in October; at least he's getting his chance now.

Perhaps he wasn't recalled earlier to see if he can be more productive in Albany?  While I don't follow Albany regularly, I'd think he's not a player who could go goalless in 40 NHL games based on what he's done this season. After all, he leaves Albany currently tied with Matt Anderson for the team lead in scoring.

2010-11 - Vladimir Zharkov - Albany 29
7 11 18 -4 19 3 1 48 14.6

He won't make the Devils instantly better, but his inclusion can help out the bottom 6.   This leads to the following question: who should sit for Zharkov?  Normally, players aren't called up just to sit.   In practice today, Gulitti saw him on the fourth line with Rod Pelley, David Clarkson, and Adam Mair.  Presumably, Jacques Lemaire would play him on the fourth line so one of those 3 would sit.  Pelley and Mair don't contribute much in the way of offense, so replacing either with Zharkov could be a lift.  Clarkson's play has been tepid as of late, perhaps a scratching for a game or two can help get his mind right or at least get the hint to play more like he did last season.

I'd also suggest that Tim Sestito should look to impress real soon, since it may be his turn to sit.  Sestito was called up from Albany initially as cover. While he's enjoyed being a center with some players most coaches wouldn't put a guy like Sestito with (clearly, John MacLean is not most coaches), he could be on the outs since he's done little with his increased ice time.  That's not good for him, given that the Devils have several forwards who can play both wing and center like Sestito.

Given today's news, let's make it a poll.  Who should sit for Zharkov?  Please tell me why you made your choice in the comments. Thanks for reading.

It’s about time they called up Zharkov!

My vote is for Clarkson to sit for a game or two. He’s a guy that needs to be sparked right now – I don’t see him finishing many hits, getting into fights, or being a nuisance around the net.

I’m hoping Josefson gets cleared to practice soon – much more appealing option than Sestito at 3rd line center.

Heh.

You can make a case for each (and for Rolston) – but be decisive. Who’s going to get the bench?

Oh boy, no, Adam Mair is not the reason for the struggles this season. He’s been one of the brighter spots on the team.

Andy Greene is the problem. Travis Zajac is the problem. Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Rolston, Henrik Tallinder, Ilya Kovalchuk, Martin Brodeur, those are the problematic players right now. Now I’m not saying Mair hasn’t become a victim of the whole “ugh they scored first, game over” mentality the Devils seem to take on, but he’s a hard worker, and it’s tough to blame that.

It was "status quo" when the NHL rejected Kovy's contract, it was "status quo" when the Devils did not dress a full roster and it is "status quo" now that the Devils have lost 21 out of 32 games in regulation. In Lou We Trust...

Well, while Mair may be one of the bright spots, you’re talking a 15 watt bulb in a room full of 5 and 10 watt ones.

I wouldn’t sit Pelley, the PK has been clicking well lately and he’s leading the forwards in shorthanded TOI and 2nd in SH-TOI per game behind Elias.

I voted Mair, but Sestito sitting wouldn’t cause me to lose any more hair. Clarkson, yeah, I could see sitting for a game or two, like the good dr indicated, but one would think Zharkov’s recall would be longer term and Sestito will probably end up being the odd man out and returned to Albany when Josefson returns.

Granted Zharkov has no NHL goals, but does have 9 more assists than Sestito in his NHL career in 15 more games. Odds are long Sestito would get 9 assists in his next 15 NHL games (heck, odds are long ANYBODY on the Devils will get 9 assists in their next 15 games, unless they’re traded real soon.)

Glad to see Zharkov (Sharky?) back. Clearly Lemaire liked him last year and despite his inability to fill up a stat sheet, I think he’ll continue to do just fine in the NHL. I think Tim Sestito should be the one sitting. Either that or Mair. Mair has played better of the two, but I would not lose sleep over either leaving. As disappointing as Clarkson has been so far this season, I would still rather keep him up here to improve. He’s getting paid the big bucks to play, so lets hope that Lemaire can find better use out of him.

I would sit Langenbrunner

by NJDOhio on Dec 27, 2010 8:48 PM EST reply actions

My vote is (to me) the obvious one, “None of the above, I want someone else to sit.” To be specific, I’m astonished Brian Rolston wasn’t a default option on this poll.

As little as Mair and Sestito have contributed, they are fourth line players. Putting Zharkov in as a fourth-liner doesn’t do a whole lot of good — Zharky deserves real minutes and some decent linemates.

I wouldn’t sit Clarkson, either. Yes, he’s been downright horrific at times, but he brings a physical edge to the lineup that most of the rest of the players simply don’t have. If Clarkson isn’t in the lineup, it falls to Adam Mair or Rod Pelley to pass for “enforcer” duties…. and both of them are featherweights in this league. Not that Clarkson can stand up to someone like Colton Orr, but he’s the best option on the team.

I understand the logic behind wanting David Clarkson to sit…. and I wouldn’t have an issue with benching him for a night or two in the press box. However, I don’t think he’s among the most problematic forwards this season, and other players have “earned” the healthy scratch before him.

As much as it would make some fans happy, I don’t think sitting Langenbrunner is an option at this point. Trading him may be the preferable option, but I’d play him over Rolston, tape-to-tape passes to Josh Bailey aside. (Why didn’t Langs get an assist on that goal?)

The plain fact is, there’s enough blame to go around the forward lines. However, I don’t know that sitting each of them in turn will really accomplish anything. Considering that Brian Rolston’s days here are clearly numbered now that he’s cleared waivers, and that Rolston has to be sent down/traded soon, I think we might as well see what the team might be like without him.

by acasser on Dec 27, 2010 9:28 PM EST reply actions

I think that sitting guys like Rolston or Langenbrunner is problematic because it diminishes the value they might have to other teams. We’re trying to sell Langs as a 2nd line guy and Rolston as a 3rd line guy, but more than anything we want to sell them as two-way forwards with veteran leadership qualities who are a positive influence in the locker room. Getting rid of Rolston through re-entry waivers would be a win for the Devils…but some other team out there has to believe that he can help them now and is within striking distance of being worth $2.5M next season. Making him a healthy scratch doesn’t help us get rid of him.

by dr(d)evil on Dec 28, 2010 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

Rolston has no value. In his last 68 regular season games, his stat line reads 9-11-20. The hope has to be that some team believes a change of scenery will do him good, because to paraphrase a former NFL head coach, “He is who we thought he was”. That Brian Rolston was just assigned to Albany reinforces this opinion I have of him.

As for Langenbrunner, a night in the press box might send a wake-up call after plays such as the tape-to-tape pass to Josh Bailey springing him for an easy goal. I’m not saying sit him on a regular basis…. just for a night if performance warrants it. With him, I’m hoping a team would see him as a veteran leader, a proven playoff performer, and a complimentary winger who can score a little and play in all situations. I’d particularly pitch Pittsburgh — if Jamie would waive his NTC to go there — because I think it’s an ideal fit. Tne Penguins are always looking for wingers to play with their talented centers, and Jamie would seem to fit the bill with his capabilities. I’d only hope (in this hypothetical scenario) that when Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero talks to Mike Rupp and Paul Martin about Langenbrunner (as Shero should if he’s doing some due diligence), Rupp and Martin don’t blow up the trade with bad things to say.

I really enjoyed his play last year. Let’s hope he got some contacts or a new prescription for his shot accuracy. He was big enough to be effective along the boards but still have that speed.

Any of those players could sit out a game (even a couple more..Rolston, Langs). I voted for Sestito only because he shouldn’t be centering a third line with Rolston and Tedenby.

Who will center the 3rd line, though? Lemaire put out lines of Kovalchuk-Zajac-Zubrus and Elias-Arnott-Langenbrunner in practice today…leaving only Sestito, Pelley, and Mair to play center for the 3rd and 4th lines.

by dr(d)evil on Dec 28, 2010 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

Zubrus is capable of playing the dot on the 3rd line. Rolston played center for a game and was quite good (though now he’s gone for the time being).

I would like to see Clarkson sit for a long time. I’d like to see Clarkson get benched and replaced with a cantene of seltzer water. That would be a significant improvement over the lanky uncoordinated creature currently wearing number 23.
I really like Zharkov last year. I liked how he handled the puck, his skating had finesse and fluidity while exhibiting a good deal of hockey sense too from what I could see. Watching him on the ice not scoring is more enjoyable than number 23 scoring goals looking awful.

Heck, I would like to see Clarkson traded. He is not, nor with never be, a Claude Lemieux. Right now he is more like a somewhat skilled enforcer, than an agitator.

I think Rolston needs to sit. And Sestito. And Mair.

Adam Mair.

I wouldn’t mind a few of these guys sitting for Zharkov, but I think Mair is most likely to be the odd man out. As John has noted a few times, Mair has recently gotten into the habit of taking stupid penalties in the offensive zone. Couple that with his lack of offensive productivity and you’ve got a good case against him. But what I think really tips the scale against him is that he’s not one of Lemaire’s guys—John MacLean was responsible for bringing him in (along with Lou, I realize). Mair doesn’t seem to provide anything that Pelley doesn’t already bring.

Clarkson gets my vote

After all, he’s shown himself to be Johnny Oduya 2.0. Plays real well to get himself a bigger contract, then plays down to a level at or below his old value.

It seems the extra money has caused him to lose his grit and tenacity on the ice. He’s been in zero fights this year…zero! He’s supposed to be a spark plug for the team and he’s just an invisible wing skating around the ice and taking shots at goalies’ chest pads.

The Clarkson we all knew and loved always provided energy, whether it be from dropping the gloves, driving the net, or the beloved(?) Clarkaround. This year’s Clarkson…I don’t know what he is exactly…did he get neutered in the offseason?

Check your facts.

As per Hockey Fights David Clarkson leads the Devils with 7 fights. The league leader is George Parros with 13. He hasn’t been as aggresive physically but he has been fighting.

There is nothing quite as satisfying as out running security after you've punched out a Flyers fan!

Odd, his SBnation profile shows he has all of 6 PIM this season. But Yahoo! shows him as having 74 PIM. My bad.

Call me what you want, but I voted for Clarkson.

He was signed to a bigger contract because he showed he had goal scoring potential, maybe even as much as 20 a year. So far, all he’s been good for is stupid penalties and falling down. I get that he’s trying (look at that shot total) but there’s a point where trying stops. Sharky proved he can get things going in the offensive zone last year (that whole CORSI analysis John did); so far, Clarkson hasn’t been producing so sit him in favor of a similar player.

Pelley has been great this year. He definitely doesn’t have the finishing power that Madden showed from time to time, particularly when he was younger, but he’s been a solid PKer. Mair is the same way. And Sestitio has hit basically anything that moves and come off with very few penalties (that I recall).

by skly27 on Dec 28, 2010 11:17 AM EST reply actions

Sit Mair

At least Pelley has some hits and scores, and Clarkson has earned his place on this team even though he’s had a crappy season… Mair’s been a boat anchor.

by Rafal on Dec 28, 2010 1:47 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely Clarkson

He is not even close to earning his contract. I hope he realizes the object is not to hit the goalie in the crest with every shot. And he doesn’t play nearly as physical as he should.
