Aside

Feel free to talk Olympic hockey in addition to the Devils-Canes game. Though if you’re watching Canada-Slovakia, I’m not sure if you’d be here talking about it?

not that either of those teams are gonna win,it would be cool to see elias have a real victory on the international stage.

Yep. I plan to have Open Threads for both the Women’s and Men’s tournament starting tomorrow. I just haven’t decided if I want to make them stories or just stay on FanPosts.

Admittedly, most of the Olympic front page content will be Devils-related OR USA-related.

From Fire & Ice, Salmela in, McAmmond out with “upper body injury”. Corrente to play wing again.

Could be related to his upper body suckiness last night…

Lets go into the break with a nice win and with that stay atop the Atlantic and 2nd in the conference.

by Team First Devils on Feb 13, 2010 6:56 PM EST reply actions

Two, and they hold the tie-breaker by virtue of having played one less game. They’ll maintain the division lead regardless, but a win would ensure sole possession.

by elesias on Feb 13, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

2 points. Pittsburgh plays tomorrow, hosting Nashville. Devils would be ahead with a tie due to one fewer game played.

the pp

is atrocious, they keep generating jack…. they dump and can’t even get to it before the other team, what’s the point? and you can’t depend on kovalchuk carrying it into the zone every time…

plus stop winging passes at kovalchuk all the time (ahem Andy Greene) – make something happen without kovalchuk as the go to guy all the time, it’s obvious to everyone and the opposing team.

They need a pp coach that knows what the heck a pp should look like – 3 pps and jack scoring chances.

by bdevil89 on Feb 13, 2010 7:41 PM EST reply actions

What have you been watching? The problem tonight is that the entire TEAM hasn’t been able to get the puck and make decent passes to maintain any good possession. Dumping it would be an improvement at this point.

They haven’t been winging passes to Kovalchuk all the time.

what i see

is that they get scared when they are pursued by the pk’er and what i see from andy greene is that he always flings to kovalchuk when kovalchuk is clearly covered and/or the pker is standing right next to him. It’s hard enough taking a fast and uncontrolled pass, but it’s even tougher when the defender is right on top of you.

Greene should fake a pass to kovalchuk and find someone low, he gets into this pattern that repeats itself over and over again on the pp – it’s annoying and shows he belongs in the ahl if he keeps doing that crap. Having kovalchuk on the ice should be open up others – i don’t understand why they don’t realize that on the pp. Plus the rest of the pp team starts acting like wusses and don’t fight for the puck as much and expect kovy to carry it in or do something.

They have to get out of that mentality. Kovy wants to be a part of the team, not the team itself. it’s really annoying and it’s been going on for quite some time even sans kovy – before him, they couldn’t even get it in to set up something, It’s an absolute joke, and surefire way to get out of the playoffs quickly. You need timely power play goals or what’s the point.

John – When does the roster freeze officially start? Did the team have to bring the respectful players up (and down) before the game? Just wondering b/c I really liked Murphy’s play last night and didn’t really expect Salmela to play.

Really a pretty bland and unfocused first period for the Devils. There was just way too many forced passes, players are out of sync with one another and the power play was absolutely futile. What will it take to spark this team for the second period?

First period thoughts

The problems with the offense, power play and otherwise, can be boiled down to one thing: puck movement. The Devils and the Canes have struggled at making passes on offense; hence, a lack of actually well set-up play by both teams. The Devils power play was especially bad at just getting the puck over the blueline and once they did get there, they did a poor job in actually passing it to each other. You see Elias firing it cross ice and hitting nothing but boards, you see weak passes along the point, you see disrupted and tipped passes in the neutral zone.

The goal against flatters Carolina, their forecheck got lucky when Salmela hesitated enough for a takeaway. The Canes roamed and got fortunate with a crazy arc that bounced in.

The Devils need to sharpen up in terms of puck movement if they want to succeed. Plain and simple.

The Hurricanes are stacking guys at the blue line, preventing the Devils from carrying it in. I’m not sure why it’s working, since the Devils team is built to cycle and generate offense from there… so dumping and chasing into the corner should benefit them, but what should works in theory is not working in practice.

My experience with this team indicates that if they start off unable to connect with passes, they’ll be off all night. Rare is the game when they figure it out part way through… so I’m not liking their chances short of a Carolina meltdown.

It’s not even obvious, though that’s part of it, it’s just bad passing. A simple, 5-7 ft. pass missing targets, passes that needed to be hard going softly and easily intercepted, etc.

Both of the last goals were ugly. He shouldn’t have slid across skates first on the first one, and on the second one the shot got through him cleanly and he couldn’t control the rebound off his back.

Marc R.

by devilssan2 on Feb 13, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

For the first shot, it was a cross-ice pass so of course he has to slide from post-to-post. Mind you #15 (name escapes me at the moment) was skating across to help block part of Marty’s vision. Marty had to guess, hence he was low, and Whitney fired it perfectly high. Mind you, the whole play happened in-part due to the 5-on-3 being a 5-on-2 due to a bad decision for the forward (zajac) to go for a change.

For the second shot, the shot fired through traffic to hit the post and bounced back behind Brodeur. Brodeur doesn’t have eyes in the back of his head so all he could do was blindly reach for it, and Whitney – not the defense – was the first to the loose puck to dash it out.

If you want to blame Marty for that, fine; but please don’t complain when most would disagree.

the first one he had no chance! a one timer on the 5-on-3!!

was off his back, yes, but that wasn’t his fault, and if whitney wasn’t allowed to skate right in and knock it in, he would have covered it! Look again at the replay and where his glove was! He had that one, if the defense could only get Whitney

sad thing is, it should be 4-0

we got lucky the first one was a quick whistle. this is a frustrating team to watch. i think we lead the league in allowing “first nhl” goals. why can’t we take advantage of a banged up team with an ahl goalie? (rhetorical)

Kicking, I alway thought they should change that rule

It is such a judgment call and the rate of overturned goals is low. It is not worth the debate or controversy. They should just allow them, would it really change how the game is played?

by captain80 on Feb 13, 2010 9:21 PM EST reply actions

From the NHL rule book

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26338

49.2 Goals – Kicking the puck shall be permitted in all zones. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who kicks a puck that deflects into the net off any player, goalkeeper or official.

A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player’s skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal. A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking player’s skate shall be a legitimate goal as long as no distinct kicking motion is evident. The following should clarify deflections following a kicked puck that enters the goal:

(i) A kicked puck that deflects off the body of any player of either team (including the goalkeeper) shall be ruled no goal.

Go Devils

That’s…that’s not very clear.

(i) A kicked puck that deflects off the body of any player of either team (including the goalkeeper) shall be ruled no goal.

I know, but there was no kick. That’s the whole point.

I agree

just pointing out that since they felt there was a kick, the fact that it hit someone else is moot.

Go Jets
Go Devils

Ah, good point. That’s fair to point out.

they seem to rarely overturn

it when it is off the side of the skate. Most of the time it the distinct kicking motion is only called of the toe, like old school an nfl kicker.

why did they wait till so late to start to play

by Imperator_Celtic on Feb 13, 2010 9:25 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think they waited; Carolina’s not nearly as intense as they were earlier.

Though the Devils’ passing has improved.

2:20 and it’s an extra skater. Well, why not throw it all on the table.

5-2 Canes.

Kovalchuk had the puck spiked away from him, Jokinen charges up and it’s an easy shot for him.

Devils played like crap and got what they deserved. So much for building off the momentum of last nights win.

Could the olympic break have possibly come at a better time for the New Jersey Devils? For a team that absolutely tore through the first half of the season, the second half has been filled with dissapointment and low quality performances from players that we all know are capable of playing better. What ever happened to the road warriors title that the team so effectively established during the first months of the season? It’s games like these that you have to just be grateful for a nice two week break. Too many players have become complacent. Too many passes have been forced. Too many power plays have been completely wasted. And yet nobody seems to care enough to make that concentrated change in effort. Our first games back after the olympic break, that entire west coast road trip…it’s going to be a huge challenge. But if the team can succeed in winning after the break, they can ride that momentum and instill back the confidence in an underperforming team.
