Colin White and his Crappy D
Worst skater on team. Worst Defenseman we have. Still has two years left on his deal after this year. 32 years old. For 6'4" and 220 he plays so damn weak on his skates. He is like a H.S. hockey player where you can telegraph everything he does and it still amazes me that he is one of our PK guys as he is just not good enough to play on the 5 on 4.
With that said, he has been a lifetime devil. I think we should cut out ties after this year and figure this out for the future. With Oduya in Atlanta the devils will no doubt address the defense issue in the off season.
Would love to see some smash mouth D back in the fold as we dont have much besides a little Fraser now and again.

Why is he a bad defenseman?
No where is there any proof of him being bad.

Colin does not play with leverage, can’t pass the puck effectively, slow on his skates, awful shooting ability. You can see he is a gut-it-out kind of guy but he is 32 now, not 25. What he was able to get away with earlier in his career was helped by a better defensive crew around him. Now with the devils D probably as weak as it has been since Oduya was sent away, Colin has been exposed in full.
Prove it and then put that proof in your FanPost.

Just pointing out he’s only a +3, way down from his +18 last year. I do believe Mottau, his usual partner, is pulling that down a bit, though I’d say that pair is the problem, because they’re both slow defensive D-men who have no chemistry whatsoever. Hopefully we can bring someone in who will caused a shift in the D lines. Bottom line: White and Mottau need to be split up.

White’s a respectable defenseman. It’s mainly Mike Mottau’s gaffes that make White look bad if you ask me, as White’s his partner. That Atlanta game earlier this season where the Devils went nuts and threw around 25 shots in the first and the Devils let 3 goals on 6 shots, the Mottau-White pairing was on the ice mainly for it. In the 2nd when Lemaire switched up the Pairings and paired White with another defenseman (forgot who he was paired with), the Defense started to play better. You can’t blame White for not being a good defenseman, many teams would enjoy having a big shutdown like him.

Going to have to completely disagree. He is (with Martin being the only possible exception) the best positional defenseman on the team. He is a defensive defensman, therefore much of what he does isnt flashy and its easy to only notice it when a mistake has been made. He is excellent at forcing skaters outside and then angling them off the puck. As his role on the defense has expanded his PIMs have consistently dropped. Laslty, while I dont have the actual record off hand, the Devils won-los record without him (post-lockout) is not good. Like most og the comments above I think the issue is more Mottau, who White has to cover up for a lot. Why do you think two coaches (Sutter and Lemaire) have kept this pair together? Because White can cover for many of Mottau’s msitakes.
White plays a solid game defensively; just takes a hair too many penalties on takeaways, but that’s from loss of speed. He makes up for lack of speed with angles to the puck-carrier and positioning.

As much as I think Colin White doesnt play up to his contract any longer and his no trade clause is crippling, he is not our problem right now. The weak link is definitely Mike Mottau, and I’m praying that when Paul Martin is back Mottau is the seventh guy.
I hated the Havelid trade last year because I thought Salmela could be a good player for us, and I’m glad to have him back, but another puck moving defenseman would be a help before the deadline.
White is a respectable defenseman
Have to agree with most here. White is not the problem.
White is 3rd on the team in +/-. He has never been a scoring D man, and that is not what is expected of him.
The team is 2nd in the league in GA avg, even with the poor performance in the last 15 games. How crappy can he be when he is 4th among defenseman in TOI and the D overall is at worst a solid defense. If he were so crappy, wouldn’t the team defense be a whole lot worse?
And one last point, couple of games back, who stepped in when the other team was going after Parise and fought? White. This despite the fact that he knows that one punch to the face could end his career. Good character guy and I would like to see him back. And I am a guy who early in his career did not care for him much because I thought he took alot of dumb penalties.

Not a big fan of White or Mottau. White needs to be paired with a mobile defenseman, Mike Mottau isn’t that guy. White knows how to play in his limitations. Mottau apparently doesn’t know how to do that and mistakes happen because of it.
I am hoping that with the return of Martin and the crop of able defenders we have maturing the minors, we can show Mottau the door. I would much rather have a youngster playing in his spot learning the game then have Mottau in there. He his a wasted roster spot, IMHO.
We are struggling with Depth and a topline D pair. We have been making due with what is available and I can’t ask for anything more. I was not aware of White’s No-Trade-Clause in his six year deal, that’s a killer.
We do have a few young D who may be ready to step up the plate, but it wont be till next year (Corrente, Eckford)
Devils probably will be in the market for a top 4 D man by the Trade Dealine.
