New Jersey Devils Lost on the Ice in Shutout Loss to Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-0
With Sunday's big deals by Toronto, I half-expected an energetic Toronto Maple Leafs team. What I didn't expect were for them to basically outplay the New Jersey Devils for the better part of the game. I'm not making this up. The Toronto Maple Leafs the worst (well, now second-worst) team in the East outplayed the New Jersey Devils, the second place team in the conference.
It was like night-and-day between tonight's game and Friday's 5-4 OT win by New Jersey. Whereas the defense was spotty on Friday, they basically clogged shooting lanes and disrupted passes all night long. Whereas the offense benefited from the Devils playing like garbage in the third period, the Leafs were storming through the neutral zone and created plenty of offensive rushes to catch the Devils surprised. Whereas Gustavsson and Toskala got burned, Jean-Sebastien Giguere didn't have to make too many difficult saves.
The performance by the Devils was a lot like the last one against Ottawa, which was also a 3-0 loss. The Devils skated through mud, the offense was tepid, the defense wasn't tight, and the entire team was out of sync. Instead of deflections dooming the Devils, it was two rebounds (Nikolai Kulemin, Phil Kessel trailing after a two-on-one) and a blazing low slapshot by Francois Beauchemin that beat Yann Danis through the five-hole on the power play. Oh, and the Devils took their share of minors which undercut their attempts at offense, and the PK was sharp save for Beauchemin's shot. The only part of the Devils game that I thought they did well as on the forecheck, the offense took back a good share of pucks in Toronto's zone. But even that led to very little in the way of good shots on net.
That I can compare this poor, uninspiring performance by the Devils tonight to a shutout loss from last week says it all about how things are going for the Devils recently.
Toronto fans should be ecstatic for how well their team played tonight, share in the euphoria over at Pension Plan Puppets. If you want stats, check out NHL.com's recap where you can learn wonderful stats on how the Leafs blocked more shots than NJ (17-15), clearly out hit by the Leafs (44-22), out drawn on faceoffs (26-15), and even did well on their own penalty kill which has been abysmal this season.
I'm honestly at a loss at what more I can say. The loss wasn't all on one player or Danis, but by the whole team. OK, the decision to play both Andrew Peters and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond in place of Vladimir Zharkov and Rod Pelley wasn't so smart in retrospect. Then again, it's not like Peters and Leblond did all that much worse than, say, Niclas Bergfors or Dean McAmmond or even Zach Parise (2 shots, really, Zach, only 2 and right at Giguere's chest)? I don't think a trade to shake things up because as bad as the recent results have been, I feel like that would be rash. Harder practices by the coaches? More vocal leadership from Jamie Langenbrunner? Ditching the "old" lucky underwear and wearing some new undergarments?
Whatever it is, the Devils have to figure it out quickly. Their next opponent is this exact same team. The arrival of Dion Phaneuf and J-S Giguere definitely gave the rest of the remaining Leafs a boost and the whole squad put in a great effort. If they aren't, they should be looking to Friday's game with excitement. I mean, can you blame them? They played very well! They'll have every reason to feel good going into the Rock, it's not like the Devils will be vastly different by then.
I think I can speak safely to say that the Devils are much better than this, but they clearly didn't play like it tonight and Friday will get real ugly if the players don't do as well as they say they should do. Needless to say, Friday concerns me greatly.
Thanks for commenting in the GameThread and your continued readership. I wish there was something really positive or something hopeful from the Devils in tonight's game, but there really wasn't. Feel free to leave your thoughts, complaints, and other feelings in the comments. I want to say please maintain perspective, but I wouldn't blame you if you're so unhappy that the Devils would slip back into slump in such an awful manner. The late loss to Los Angeles angered me, but this loss just left me completely disappointed.
If you'd like to see the highlights of this game, you either missed the game to see how it all went awry or you support Toronto or the Devils losing and want to be reminded of how it went on. Either way, here's the highlights from NHL.com:

Trouble
After that effort, I now think we are in trouble. The team seems like they don’t know where they can go to for a goal. I think John used the term lost and that fits. There was not one guy out there on the ice tonight who got it done. Parise as usual seemed to me to have energy, but two shots is the bottom line.
Boy, December’s play is like a distant memory.
Olympic break can’t come soon enough.

I updated the recap to include a jump, a video from NHL.com of the game’s highlights (not that there were any for NJ), and a sentence at the end.

The Devils definitely weren’t up to it but to be fair to your guys the Leafs played one of their most complete games of the year.

I know. The Leafs outplayed the Devils. The Leafs played very well in all aspects of the ice. The Devils did not. The score was entirely deserved.

No but I mean you shouldn’t be too worried about it. Like you said, it was the perfect storm of circumstances.

I appreciate the kind perspective, but considering that this is the second time in a week since the Devils were shutout and played this poorly in doing so. The Devils have struggled to score goals outside of the Toronto game on Friday, and even that game wasn’t too good considering it was a botched lead.
Just as the Devils start looking like they are playing good hockey, it all goes awry. After the first three months of the season, January was a shock to most Devils fans, and February definitely started off on the wrong foot.

IIs not only tonight, but the last dozen games that has me worried. Its been a long time since I have felt disgusted with the Devils, and although we had a great first half of the season it feels like we are just coasting into the Olympics.
I’ts not a free fall yet, but will be if we dont go to the break playing at least 500 hockey.
Who has the panic button? it may need to be pushed soon.
Game Watch
We were understandably ticked off at the Game Watch tonight at Brick City Bar and Grill. There was little emotion in the whole place. A lot of fan frustration at Mottau, including by the Maven who was there. (I did correct him on a trivia question he asked – other than the Niedermayers, who were the other set of brothers who played for the Devils – the contestant answered the Brotens – I immediately thought of the Lemieuxs though . . funny don’t know why).
Skating through mud was a good analogy – Pando and Niedermayer especially.

Disappointed
i just agree i was disappointed and angered by the performance. Hopefully maybe being at home will help them when they face them again friday
Maybe it is time to let go.
Of some players.
I really like Jay Pandolpho and all that he have done for the Devils, but this season has not been good for him and with a guy like Zharkov waiting in the wings and Davis showing pretty good in the last couple games. I see no reason to hold onto him.
Also there is at least one or two defense men that could be traded, especially with Martin coming back. Mottau or Fraser would be obvious candidates to let go. As guys like Corrente and Eckford have showed that they are ready to step in.
So maybe package Fraser and Pandolpho to get a 2nd line winger that can put it in the net or get some draft picks.
Don't need the trade them, just....
They have minimal trade value at this point. Pandolfo has a no-trade, plus another year with a cap hit of $2.5 million after this season. Mottau is an expiring contract, so is Niedermeyer, and I doubt you could get a whole lot for either one. You might get something for Fraser, but I’m not ready to give up on him, yet.
We see Lemaire shuffling lines all the time. We’ve seen him pull rookies out of the lineup as punishment for their play, but I don’t see how that makes much of an impact. If you want to get this team’s attention, how about benching the under-performing veterans for a change and giving the kids some more significant minutes to see if they can handle it? Rob Niedermeyer doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything positive for me at this point…. he’s not winning face-offs, he’s not chipping in offensively, and he is either taking a penalty or giving away a goal often enough that it is noticeable. There have been issues with the White-Mottau pairing, too.
Personally, I think Zharkov has hit something of a wall and would benefit from more seasoning in the Minors and getting to play 18 minutes a night there, vis-a-vis eight minutes a night on the NHL level. I’d just as soon send him and one of the enforcers down (I’m willing to risk losing Leblond or Peters on waivers), call up another forward (Halischuk?) and a D-man (I’d go with Eckford, although I could understand Corrente), and start putting some veterans (Niedermeyer, Mottau come to mind) in the press box for a night or three and see if that helps.
the sound of silence...
I am silent about my thoughts right now. I still believe in this team and know they will turn it around. I am only worried that the longer this goes on it may affect the teams confidence considerably. They cannot seem to score against anyone right now. Every goalie they face seems to be playing a great game. When we get into the playoffs we will be facing many tough goaltenders. I HAVE BEEN against the Devils making a trade but it might not be a bad idea right now to pick up someone who can jumpstart this offense right now…
Donald Vasquez
One good thing from tonight
Good to see Whitey jump right in and take Phaneuf to task for taking a run at Parise. I’d be more worried if that wasn’t happening!
The recent slump is a testament to how indispensible Elias is. He’s the straw that stirs the drink in terms of any secondary scoring on this team. His play-making skills are sorely missed by this group, and he makes everyone around him better. His skill and creativity brings out the best in players like Bergfors, Rolston and Zubrus. He is a first line talent who raises the game of the second unit he plays on here, and his absence leaves a huge void on the power-play as well. I’m sure this isn’t news to anyone here. We’ll get a lot better real quick when Patty gets back, you can bank on it!
Agreed on Elias
i have noticed that the team seems to get a bounce from him whenever he comes back (granted that is not based on a huge sample size, its not like he has been constantly in and out due to injury).
I know he is skating but any word on how soon he can get back?

I was treated to this game tonight by a friend and let me tell you, nothing beats sitting in a suite with obnoxious and xenophobic Leafs fans who won’t hesitate to throw chips at your head when you’re not looking because you’re 1) Asian and 2) rooting for the other team.
Age isn’t even an excuse because the man who did it was decades older than me and had mostly grey hair. But hey, apparently I got off light— if the Leafs were losing he might very well have poured his beer on me instead, according to my friend.
OK - I'm being cynical
John,
After talking to many fans last night, I am going to be a bit of a Debbie Downer. Was this not supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Devils? Every year after a playoff flop, I expect it to happen and it doesn’t. Why? Marty. The coaching. The players?
Considering the exodus of Devils talent over the past 4 years, I’ve totally expected it to happen and it hasn’t. They have been able to compensate well enough.
But I feel asking the question: Have they simply overachieved in the 1st part of the year and are just coming back down to earth now? OK Elias is injured and their best defenseman.
But is their Defense that good? At full strength, the Devils are at best a two line team, two potent offensive lines and two pairs of core D and outside of Martin, Greene and White, . . .Oduya and Salvador have been up and down.
John, I’m sure you’ll rightly call me out on these and challenge my notion. But I feel the questions at least need to be asked. Just make sure you listen to this while you are writing your reply, please.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
I’m not really sure why your worried about being ripped. This is your opinion and your entitled to it, but after seeing the other person get ripped I see where your coming from.
You bring up a valid point, we never have really had a “rebuilding” year and consistently make the playoffs, even when the experts predict that we won’t be a good team. Alot of teams would take our record over the last 15 years.
I think we are a good team with an above average defense, but due to injuries have alot of players in roles they weren’t expected to play. Dean McAmmond for instance would be a good fourth line player for us, but has been forced into a more prominent role due to Elias and Clarkson being out. I would not mind for example a fourth line of Pandolfo/McAmmond/Zharkov with Peters being the scratch and put in when there was a role for his skills.
When Healthy I would like to see Clarkson play with Zajak and Parise and see how his grit works with that line. 2nd Line Zubrus centering Elias and Rolston. Line 3 Neidermeyer centering Langenbrunner and Bergfors. I know this sits Pelley, and i dont mind that one bit.
Lou does have one critical flaw. I’m all for rewarding dedicated devils like Pandolfo and White monetarily, and I suggest that niether would get the same money if they were free agents right now, but the NTCs are just killing us.
I suspect the true team is somewhere between the two extremes.
They aren’t this bad, they just need to be reminded somehow. How? Couldn’t say. If I knew, I’d be wealthy (and still wouldn’t listen to Kings of Leon).
To be quick about it...
I agree with elesias, but I’d like to add that you can’t have it both ways. A team can not simultaneously rebuild after every season they don’t win the Cup and look to contend every season. Not in hockey or any other sport for that matter.

Agreed
I had mentioned this a few games back when things started to look bleak. (The whole concept of not having much expectation for our team this year at the beginning of the season.) I really expected this team to hover around the 10th slot in the east and not make the playoffs this year. Yet here we are near to the Olympic break and still within the top teams of the east. Is this a result of coaching? the Brodeur factor? the support from the Lowell players? an “average” group of adversaries in the eastern conference? all of the above? All we can do is speculate on the matter at this point. So that being said…should we be complacent with the current situation and play? Yes and no. It is a good feeling to be in the top 8 in the east. It is not a good feeling to be playing like (or worse than) one of the teams at the bottom of the east. Of course all teams will slump during a years play…this is common knowledge. Is this our time? Should we shrug our shoulders and let things work themselves out? We will see…but just a few questions:
1. Does this team need a trade? Not so much to bring in the “answer to our problems” type player..but to awaken the players we already have.
2. Is our leadership role truly filled on this team?
3. Do we need to see more cohesive/set lines from Lemaire and have him generally stick to them?
1. I think so, even if it is just a depth trade like Lou is known for. I’d like to see one of the needs we knew we had coming into the season addressed, but sometimes just a little change goes a long way toward sparking the new guy(s) and/or the entire team.
Regardless, it’s clear something needs to happen.
2. Tough question because we don’t really know what goes on in the locker room. All we have is the on-ice product, and that would suggest the answer is no. I believe it is, but again, I can’t argue more than a gut feeling against someone who feels differently.
No one questioned the leadership when the team was doing well, so I have to believe it’s fine and not a part of the problem.
3. To a degree. I think some familiarity helps things the team seems to be struggling with like passing and clearing the defensive zone. By the same token, keeping things fresh (ideally) helps to avoid complacence and predictability (which the offense was last night, to an agonizing degree). Perhaps he should keep 5 or 6 or 7 lines and practice them together (to varying degrees based on possible usage—to keep them somewhat familiar) and not look to mix and match 12 different players on the fly like he seems to.
I think it was clearly obvious by the beginning of the second period where this game was heading. I’m not going to claim the Devils played well by any means, but I would say I’m not suprised by the results after such a significant trade took place by Toronto. Of course Toronto was the more energized team. So I’m not surprised by the results.
Anyway, just a couple of points. First, I agree that Pandolfo and Niedermayer aren’t really contributing to the team anymore. I know they are given the tough task of defending the other team’s 1st line but for a third line, they need to be able to generate some kind of consistent offense as well. Both players at best should be on the fourth line.
I DO think this team may have slightly overachieved throughout the first portion of the season but only because so much of our talent was sidelined. I think some of us are being a little too harsh right now though. ALL teams go through slumps during some point of the season. These slumps can occur at different points of the season, but all teams go through them. Look at the Penguins. They didn’t play the most consistent of hockey up until recently.
I agree with whoever said that Elias stirs the drink, because he does. There is no doubt in my mind that this team sorely misses him. The second line becomes non-existant without him. But more importantly, the opposition can focus on defending the first line when this occurs. And with an anemic third line, where are we supposed to get our scoring from every night?
I think this slump pushes me to believe that now, more than ever, Lou will make a trade or two by the deadline. I think we have a great team but not a complete one. Pieces are missing. Notably, a great defender and an additional scoring threat. Lou’s not going to miss a great opportunity at a playoff run by holding pat. He’ll make moves when everyone is healthy again.

“Lou will make a trade or two by the deadline.”
Now that Brendan Witt has been put on waivers by the Isles, would his cap hit be doable for the Devils ? It seems the Isles are gearing for a trade and trying to free up space. In my opinion, Witt gives the Devils leadership in the locker room and toughness. I mean he was hit by an SUV and played the same night. If this is a valuable player, but his cap hit will affect us, can’t we just re-put him on waivers after this year?
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
Agreed, if you don’t like White/Salvador you’d despise Witt, a player who’s far worse than both.

I disagree with what you said about the offense. The Devils have been shutout 3 times in the last 9 games. Throughout the entire month of January, they had exactly one decisive win against Dallas (4-0). This team barely beats opponents. I don’t even remember the last time we actually held on to, let alone closed a game with a 2 goal lead. That is unacceptable. The offense CLEARLY is missing one legitimate goalscorer. Even with Elias and Clarkson back in the lineup, we’re still going to need one more scoring threat to ease the burden of Parise and Zajac.
"We aim above the mark to hit the mark." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
And when I say closing a game with a two goal lead, I mean without an empty net goal.

I believe you’re right, unfortunately. The Dallas game was the last time the Devils went up 2 and didn’t look back. Or, to put it another way, just about a month ago.

Lets pretend the injuries didnt happen. Would they still be 2nd in the Eastern Conference? Probably.
Would they still be going through or have a extended scoring slump? …Maybe but probably.
The biggest weakness is still not having that solid 2nd offensive creating line. Right now its not just the lack of goals. They are not even creating enough quality shots on goal…..I know this is just repeating what some others have said.
Not all hope is lost. Glad this is happening now and not in April.
Oh….I also agree Pandolfo and Niedermayer are both wastes of a roster spot. Well at least both of them together. To many checking forwards for my liking. I really like the McAmmond pick up tho.
McAmmond is a nice enough player, so long as he’s not asked to do more than he is capable of at this point in his career. He doesn’t bring enough offense to be depended on to help in that role, which is part of where the Devils are struggling nowadays.
The heart of the matter these days is the lack of secondary offense. The Elias injury has been significant, because that puts all the eggs into the Parise basket, no matter who he is playing with. It isn’t that Elias is a magnificent scorer (although he is a very capable goal-scorer in his own right), it is how he facilitates the offense for whomever he is with. The Devils will be better once he gets back and is healthy…. Clarkson’s return (probably post-Olympics) will also be helpful given he’ll do the dirty work and score the hard-working goals that are lacking these days, but Elias comes first and foremost.
I’m starting to see a lot of rumors bubble up from the more “credible” sources (ESPN and TSN, to name two in specific) out there that say the Devils are very much in the mix for Kovalchuk. Also, Atlanta had scouts at the rock tonight for the Hartford-Lowell game. Probably won’t come to anything (Lou rarely pays ransom rates like Atlanta seems to be after), but that would be one way to solve the issue.
As mentioned earlier every team slumps and I prefer it now than at seasons end going into the playoffs- reading these posts, everyone makes valid points about our weak and strong points but I’m not ready to pull the panic button on us and the reason is what team has the depth of quality players we have?Yes, there are the teams that are carried by scoring superstars but we have a superstar goalie that can carry us also; plus, solid players throughout our lineup that I don’t think other teams have. Again, we may have some dead wood but what team doesn’t? And our dead wood players are still quality players the only hindrince with them is their age. We will be fine.
