Olympic Hockey Day 9 Open Thread: Three Important Games in Men's Ice Hockey

Welcome to the fifth of a regular feature throughout the Olympic break, an open thread to discuss all that is going on in the sport of hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  (Note: John or I make these the night before, scheduled to appear at 10 AM.  I should be up for the late games, so hang out with me, won't you?.)

Just so you know, the Devils are stepping up online for additional coverage.  The official site has a hub for the Olympics; complete with a schedule for both tournaments. The team site also has a blog written by team correspondent Scott Modrzynski called The Devil is in the Details.  All posts are listed on the hub; just scroll down past the players and you'll see it on the side.  Zach Parise is also providing a few words to Tom Gulitti's Fire & Ice every day, so check that out.

Yesterday's games didn't feature the big teams but they do have some sort of an impact on today's games, which are the last three in the men's ice hockey round robin part of the tourney.    In Group A, Norway rose up and gave Switzerland a big scare. The two teams traded goals off and Switzerland needed overtime and a game winner from Romano Lemm win 5-4.  Switzerland, with 3 points, now control third place in Group A.  Belarus beat Germany 5-3 and have sewn up third place in Group C.  The most interesting game was Slovakia-Latvia in Group B, not for the game itself, though. Slovakia routed Latvia 6-0 and now have 5 points in the group.  Because of the result, Russia needs at least a point and a +1 in goal differential if they want to take second place in Group B.

Everyone goes to the playoffs in men's ice hockey, but only the top 4 teams get a bye.  Fifth through twelfth match up for an extra qualification game.  Yesterday decided eighth through twelfth; in order: Switzerland, Belarus, Norway, Germanay, Latvia. Today's games are not only games between big teams but big for positioning purposes.  You'd rather be in fifth place and play Latvia rather than come in seventh and play a very confident Swiss team.

Special Rule: Do not use these posts to complain about how no one cares about Men's Ice Hockey. This isn't the place for that. Violators will be banned until March 1 assuming no other rules were broken.

Please use this post  for all your comments, analysis, and thoughts about today's hockey games in Men's Ice Hockey games.   Not the other Olympic sports, mind you.

February 21, 2010 Schedule

3:00 PM EST/12:00 PM PST - Group B: Czech Republic vs. Russia (NBC)

7:45 PM EST/4:45 PM PST - Group A: Canada vs. United States (MSNBC)

12:00 AM EST/9:00 PM PST - Group C: Sweden vs. Finland (MSNBC)

Want to watch the games online and legally? For the Americans, NBC has streaming options. For the Canadians, CTV has streams.  Thanks to user C.J.Richey121 for the NBC information and to user dchoubak about CTV. I've added my own thoughts on each game, after the jump.

Star-divide

3:00 PM EST/12:00 PM PST - Czech Republic vs. Russia (NBC) - A Czech win of any kind and they own Group C and a bye.   Patrik Elias (2 G, 1 A) has been solid, but the story for the big C.R. has been Jaromir Jagr showing the world that he's still oozing talent (2 G, 1 A).  Marek Zidlicky has more points than both with 4 assists, look for his involvement.

A Russian win in regulation (and only that), and they can take the group. For the Russians, no one has jumped out early to take a lead in scoring with 8 players with 2 points each ranging from Alexander Ovechkin (2 G) to Ilya Kovalchuk (1 G, 1 A) to the immortal Danis Zaripov (2 G).  They'll need to put together a strong effort today.

Historically, games between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia have been heated affairs like few in the realm of international hockey.  Massive political changes and time have subsided some of the rivalry, of course.  Still, for a game of this magnitude, don't expect either squad to be particularly nice to each other.

7:45 PM EST/4:45 PM PST - Canada vs. United States (MSNBC) - This is the big one for Group A.  A win of any kind by the U.S. and they'll take the group.  Canada needs a win over their own to win it.  It's the team that beat Switzerland in regulation versus the team that needed a shootout to beat Switzerland.  It's the underdog versus the favorites. It's going to be a big game.  I wish it was on NBC, but that decision was made a while back and as Greg Wyshynski put it at Puck Daddy, it's a defensible position from a stand point of demographics.

For the Americans, a change of lines from the first two games is apparent.  Per Kevin Allen's twitter, Zach Parise (2 A) and Jamie Langenbrunner (0 pts.) will be on a line centered by Paul Statsny.  Perhaps some of the ZZ Pops chemistry will germinate on the ice as the Americans will need to get their offense in gear. Given that Canada's defense looked sloppy against Swiss-league players, perhaps that'll help too.  Canada should be expected to come out to play with a purpose (perhaps anger too?), but we honestly don't know how they'll come out if the U.S. comes out hitting.  Per Wyshynski's twitter, Mike Babcock of Canada said that Martin Brodeur will start in net.

Who will I support? America.  Namely because I am an American. Plus, Brodeur already has a gold medal and I don't think it matters to the Devils how Brodeur does in the Olympics.   If you're neutral, though, watch this anyway and see the dislikement/hatred show on the ice.  It is a rivalry, of course.  But not as big as the third game:

12:00 AM EST/9:00 PM PST - Group C: Sweden vs. Finland (MSNBC) - I wish, I wish, I wish this wasn't on at midnight because this will be an excellent game.  A Scandinavian rivalry for control of Group C.  Both teams have looked good early, albeit against weaker competition.  Now we'll get a chance to see who really is superior and who will get a bye going into the playoffs.

Sweden's attack will be led by the expected bunch of the Sedin twins, Daniel Alfredsson, and Nicklas Backstrom. Surprisingly, Mattias Weinhandl (Isles fans will know who he is - maybe) has also got on the board with 2 assists whereas Swedish legend Peter Forsberg has yet to get on the scoresheet.  For Finland, Mikko Koivu and ex-Leaf/current-Flame Niklas Hagman are both enjoying the Olympics; Koivu has 3 assists and Hagman has 2 goals and 2 assists.  Also surprisingly, Jarkko Ruutu is not only this team but he has 2 goals.

If you want to see an excellent rivalry add another chapter to their long history, then set your DVRs and VCRs or even stay up late to watch this one take place.  You won't regret it.

Keys to the Game for USA by Ken Daneyko and Greg Wyshynski

Yep, there’s a video at Yahoo! Sports where this is mentioned.

So go look at it if you miss hearing Dano analyze hockey and want to see Wyshynski in a tie.

It auto-plays and the second video is about keys for Canada.

Interesting Tidbit

The 3 games being played are rematches of the last 3 gold medal games. They are also being played in the same order. Czech/Russia was 1998, USA/Canada was 2002, and Sweden/Finland was 2006. Coincidence?

Michalek tripped up by Korneev.

No, it had nothing at all to do with Kovalchuk sliding into Vokoun – that got no whistle (was he tripped?).

Ooooh, a long 5-on-3 here. Federov now sits.

First period over

The Czech equalizer was fantastic. First shot for the Czechs in 10 minutes; and there wasn’t much Nabokov could do about that one. Brilliant shot by Plekanec.

The big CR will have some PP time to start the second, but not much. The game has been even otherwise in terms of physical play. Russia’s been more effective, but I feel possession has been evened up. The makings for a good game.

If Russia and Sweden lose? Tiebreaker after points is goals scored? Of course I don’t want this, but just wondering who to root for.

The United States would need help for sure. I’m not certain of the scenarios but ultimately, the US needs to finish 4th. The tiebreaker after points isn’t goals scored but goal differential.

Radulov takes a stupid penalty for charging. Sergei Zinoviev got hurt by Krejci, who was hit by Radulov.

The Czechs look lost out there. In their own zone, Kubina especially looks tentative to clear it. Up front, the Czechs aren’t moving the puck well and Russia is just picking it up.

Semin fires a ROCKET from the half-boards, but Vokoun stops it perfectly. The Russians look pumped. Sure, there’s enough time for a comeback but as it is, they need SOMETHING to pick themselves up.

By the by, replays of this third goal show that Roman Polak’s positioning was terrible.

The Russia-CR game was one of the worst officiated games I think I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some bad ones.

Watching the Russian team was like watching the Flyers: they committed so many penalties that the refs didn’t call all of them at the risk of seeming to be biased. Or something. I don’t know how else to explain how Ovechkin’s hit on Jagr wasn’t charging, among others.

by elesias on Feb 21, 2010 7:34 PM EST reply actions

Agreed.

Aren’t any hits to the head a penalty in international competition? I saw slight shoulder to head contact on the Jagr hit.

by Matthew Ventolo on Feb 21, 2010 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn’t a charge, nor was it dirty. Nasty, sure. Hard, definitely. But like Scott Stevens, Ovechkin jacked him up.

by Matthew Ventolo on Feb 21, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

I’d have to see it again, but on first viewing it sure looked like he jumped into him… and I’m not one to give Ovechkin the benefit of the doubt on things like that since that is pretty much his modus operandi.

There were several non-calls that were blatant, that was just one of them. The oddest call, though, was Jagr getting called for Datsyuk holding him.

The whole game has been intense, intense, intense. I think a calmer game would benefit the Americans, but if they feed on emotion, then so be it. They need much more possession because Canada is starting to pick up the American’s poor clearances.

This is going to be crazy. It’s not that the US wants to sit back, but they’ll be pinned back as Canada is going to throw EVERYTHING forward here.

This game has two major lessons

1) Screening goalies can and will help teams score goals.

2) A ton of shots on net is desirable but missing the net over and over and over hurts just as much despite the SOGs.

Man of the Match: RYAN MILLER. He was massive

Incredibly honorable mention: BRIAN RAFALSKI. He doesn’t score a lot of goals, only 4 multi goal games in 750 NHL games; but he was FANTASTIC tonight, firing shots through Jamie Langenbrunner’s screens.

Langenbrunner gets an unsung hero for said screens.

45-26 Canada led in shots.

Too bad the IIHF doesn’t record missed shots, I would think it’d be heavily in Canada’s favor too. So many missed shots!

USA Clinches a Top 2 Seed in Playoff Round

with 9 points and a +9 Goal Differential.

If Finland wins in regulation, USA will get the 2 Seed. Finland has a +9 GD as of now.

If Sweden wins in regulation, they will need to win by 6 goals to clinch the 1 Seed.

by Matthew Ventolo on Feb 21, 2010 10:29 PM EST reply actions

1 seed would be great cause than we would play the winner of Switzerland-Belarus.

2 seed would play winner of Slovakia-Norway.

Fun Fact

Canada (should be) slotted to play Germany next. The winner of that game will face….Russia.

The US win guarantees that one of them will NOT medal in these Olympics.

Was at a 60 USA - 40 Canada bar

Was in NYC at a bar that was 60% Americans and 40% Canadians from my hockey league. Hell, there was even a (Canadian) celebrity there.

Biggest thing I got from talking to the Canadians after the game is how they were very disappointed with Marty tonight and believe Luongo will be in goal for Canada’s next game. Brodeur was definitely outplayed by Miller. . . .

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

by Cherno77 on Feb 22, 2010 12:22 AM EST reply actions

Do they really think Luongo could have stopped those goals? 3 were deflections, 2 off their own men. That surprises me. I do agree that Luongo will be in goal. It’s against Germany I think, and to play 3 games in 4 days is tough for anyone. No reason not to split time.

by Matthew Ventolo on Feb 22, 2010 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

that was probably broduers last game for canada

he played good, that clearing attempt he shot right to rafalski was the only big mistake,in a tournament like this the goaltending needs to be epic, there is no other way to win.broduer was average.

by Imperator_Celtic on Feb 22, 2010 8:29 AM EST up reply actions

I think if Marty gets another game, it will be against Germany as Babcock will probably want Luongo in for Russia. More likely Marty will be the scapegoat and Luongo will get both starts.

Those that wanted Marty rested are going to get their wish. Public outcry for this one is (already) going to be too much for the Canadian coaching staff to bear.

My hope is that Marty takes the disappointment and downtime to refocus, re-energize and come back to the Devils driven and motivated to prove the doubters and haters wrong.

I'm glad Marty will be resting

The Canadian public will be too befuddled looking for their next scapegoat when they don’t win gold.

If Canada gets through Germany, they get Russia, and if they get through that they’ll likely have to go through Sweden.

I couldn’t catch the entire game but a little more than half of it. Based on what I saw, however, Ryan Miller absolutely dominatined in his role as goaltender for the United States. What an incredible and stunning performance by him. Being a Devils fan, I’m as big of a Marty fan as anyone. But Miller was clearly the more impressive goaltender overall last night. Some of the saves he made in the third period left my jaw hanging open. I sure as heck do not blame Canada’s loss on Marty, but I can easily see many Canadians pointing their fingers at him. Nonetheless, what a great win by the United States. Langenbrunner with the game winner….sweet.

Luongo should be in net for Canada.

The Canadian public is furious over the performance of Marty Brodeur. They are calling for Luongo who should have never been pulled after his opening game shutout. Some will argue it was not Martys fault but we have been hearing this for over a month now with 2 different teams. Time to make the switch..

Donald Vasquez

by don_vas on Feb 22, 2010 9:32 AM EST reply actions

And I’m sure that will be the case, but in all fairness, Luongo’s shutout performance was a 15 save performance against a Norway team that’s managed only 5 goals in 3 their games.

by elesias on Feb 22, 2010 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

Good point Elesias. Luongo will undoubtedly be Canada’s goaltender for their next game but in no way will that decision be justified by either’s performance thus far in the olympics. It will be clearly an emotional reaction to last night’s results.

Luongo will likely be in goal but nobody was ragging on Marty after game 2 shutdown in overtime and in the shootout. He stoned the Swiss 4 times. None were misses by the shooter, all 4 were stops by Marty. Short memory for all those Brodeur detractors.

by DevilsDDS on Feb 22, 2010 4:01 PM EST reply actions

As Long As

Marty doesn’t give up 2 goals in less than 2 mins again (Carolina game, and about 4 times this year) I think I’ll be happy…otherwise, I’ll get tired of people making up excuses for him.
