Olympic Hockey Day 12: Best Day of Hockey Ever? Best Day of Hockey, Ever.

Welcome to the seventh (?) of a regular feature throughout the Olympic break, an open thread to discuss all that is going on in the sport of hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  (Note: John or I make these the night before, scheduled to appear at 10 AM.  I should be up for the late games, so hang out with me, won't you?.)

Just so you know, the Devils are stepping up online for additional coverage.  The official site has a hub for the Olympics; complete with a schedule for both tournaments. The team site also has a blog written by team correspondent Scott Modrzynski called The Devil is in the Details.  All posts are listed on the hub; just scroll down past the players and you'll see it on the side.  Zach Parise is also providing a few words to Tom Gulitti's Fire & Ice every day, so check that out.

We all got teased with the potential for upsets in the final two games of the qualification round of the 2010 Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.  Team Czech Republic needed Overtime to defeat the surprising Latvians.  A shockingly weak goal given up by the Latvian goalie to David Krejci ended the game and the hopes of the passionate Team Latvia and their fans.  The Czechs move on to face Finland later today.

Also late last night, the Slovakians got a challenge from hell by way of the pillaging Norwegians, but a late Miroslav Satan goal put them ahead for good, as they beat Norway by a score of 4-3, as they move on to meet the Swedes.  Earlier in the day, Switzerland finished off Belarus in a shootout and Canada routed Germany, 8-2.  It's a shame we couldn't at least see one surprise team in the quarterfinal round, but let's face it, the 7:30, 10 and Midnight matchups are all the sort of games we've been dreaming about.

Special Rule: Do not use these posts to complain about how no one cares about Men's Ice Hockey. This isn't the place for that. Violators will be banned until March 1 assuming no other rules were broken.

Please use this post  for all your comments, analysis, and thoughts about today's hockey games in Men's Ice Hockey games.   Not the other Olympic sports, mind you.

February 24, 2010 Schedule

Men's Ice Hockey - Quarterfinal Round

3:00 PM ET/Noon PT - Quarterfinal 1: USA vs. Switzerland (NBC)

7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT - Quarterfinal 2: Russia vs. Canada (CNBC)

Midnight ET/9:00 PM PT - Quarterfinal 4: Slovakia vs. Sweden (CNBC)

Want to watch the games online and legally? For the Americans, NBC has streaming options. For the Canadians, CTV has streams.  Thanks to user C.J.Richey121 for the NBC information and to user dchoubak about CTV.  Let's do this.

Can Langenbrunner and Parise just play this whole game?

by undersuspicion426 on Feb 24, 2010 3:13 PM EST reply actions

I don’t want to see that, but I would like to see less Callahan.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Pavelski line carrying play but Hiller up to the task.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Almost 13 minutes into the first the US is getting about 1 registered shot per minute. Keep that up and they’ll be in good shape.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 3:25 PM EST reply actions

I should say averaging, not getting, of course.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Parise stoned by Hiller.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 3:36 PM EST reply actions

0-0 after 1

18 shots to 4 in favor of the US.

US carried play for large chunks and dominated territorial possession, but struggled to clear their own end (which directly led to the period’s sole penalty, a restraining foul against Callahan).

They had several glorious chances, but Hiller or the post made the saves.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 3:40 PM EST reply actions

Good PK by the US and shortly thereafter Parise draws the first one for the US.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 4:02 PM EST reply actions

Great PK by the Swiss. Really frustrated the US… no shots on goal.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 4:04 PM EST reply actions

Langenbrunner just misses, but draws the trip.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Another strong PK by the Swiss into a 3 on 1 as the penalty expires, but E Johnson makes a great diving block to break it up, and the Swiss take another penalty.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 4:13 PM EST reply actions

Americans are bunching up

They don’t seem to know where to be especially the center and strong wing. On the plus side, Langs is setting up for that slot one-timer nicely.

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

Fluky bounce off Hiller into the net in the dying seconds, but replay shows it was a tenth of a second too late getting across the line.

Something to build on.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions

0-0 after 2

More of the same.

US carries play, gets nothing.

On the plus side, the Parise-Stastny-Langenbrunner line looks great. The rest, meh.

by elesias on Feb 24, 2010 4:26 PM EST reply actions

The chances are there, they’ve been crashing the net, they nearly got a lucky bounce, and…nothing.

This does not bode well going into the third. The US absolutely needs to keep pounding Hiller. May I offer a suggestion? Screens, man, screens. It worked on Brodeur, it’ll work on Hiller.

I’ve got a good feeling Parise will get his first goal of the tournament in this third period.

I don’t, however, have such a good feeling about this game going into the third tied. If the Swiss score first, it’s trouble.

They definitely need to get more pucks up high on him.

Canada played to their abilities

And Russia is shellshocked.

Both teams’ defenses didn’t look good; but Canada just did whatever they wanted on offense. 3 of the 4 goals against, Nabokov couldn’t have done much better; but I suspect a change will be made. I’m disappointed in Russia. When they pulled one back they didn’t really try to build on it. There was just a lull before Canada went back to doing what they wanted on offense.

Russia’s losing 4-1 and they need a huge start to the second period to have a chance.

Corey Perry on the loose puck, Canada 5-1

Nabokov committed too much to the initial shot, the shot’s blown and Perry had the whole net to put it in. He couldn’t have missed that.

Russia is so lethargic, changing the goalie would change nothing.

7-1 Canada

No one picked up Corey Perry in front. Eric Staal set him up for sweet looking one-timer. No chance for Bryzgalov, the shot was on the flank.

So much for the Russian comeback

RUSSIA SCORES! 7-3!

Sergei Gonchar from the point, slap shot, BOOM it’s in!

Where was this earlier in the game? Good passing, a faceoff win, good possession, and Ovechkin in the slot.

That was a PPG as Canada was serving a minor for too many men.

Marty's Getting Cheated

John, am I the only one here who thinks Marty was setup to fail in this tournament? Marty plays USA and Swiss, clearly superior to Luongo’s German and Norwegian opponents, and when he doesn’t put up comparable numbers all of a sudden the greatest goalie of all time is not trusted in the Canadian net. This is really getting me upset. How do you feel about this?

Marc R.

by devilssan2 on Feb 24, 2010 9:29 PM EST reply actions

Its funny and very amusing. He probably was set up to fail so they can feel like they have another goaltender to backstop them when marty is gone.

by CaramelCoveredXMas on Feb 24, 2010 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Let me defer to Mr. Tom Gulitti from the comments to this post (12:25 PM):

What’s happened to him in this tournament is unfair. An entire country—including Mike Babcock—threw him under the bus when he was not the only one to blame for that loss on Sunday or the way the team played against Switzerland either.

Maybe that will motivate him when he comes back. I’m sure he won’t forget it.

I agree that Brodeur was unfairly thrown under the bus. Yes, he didn’t make good decisions stickhandling the puck; yet this excuses Canada’s offense missing the net, wasting power plays, and not using screens; and the defense was miserable in their own zone – especially on the goals against. At the end of the day, two deflections and a screen – that’s 3 out of 4 that I can’t fault Brodeur for anymore than you can’t fault Luongo for giving up that first goal against Russia on a screen.

I don’t think he was set up to fail; I think the expectations were too unrealistic. As I said a few days ago, a goalie change wasn’t and isn’t going to make the rest of Canada play better. That’s up to the players and coaches. It’s a syllogism to argue that Luongo being in net has been the main reason why Canada has played better against Germany and Russia.

Also just utter disrespect. No matter how he played, I think this is a slap in the face by Canada to Marty. Just seniority alone should have earned him the nod.

Marc R.

by devilssan2 on Feb 24, 2010 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

I could go either way, really. For Canada’s perspective, the emotional pick was to make the switch but practically was it going to make Canada that much weaker in net? Not really. Luongo’s talented enough to do the job. But would have he stopped the same shots that beat Brodeur? Probably not, unless he has some crazy x-ray/psychic vision.

I’d argue he hasn’t played a very competitive team yet in these Olympics. Russia’s been too awful to be considered competitive tonight.

This game has gotten ugly

Nasty hits. Semin throws a big hit on Boyle (an elbow?), Semin’s slewfooted by Boyle from behind, and while Canada will surely win, it’s not exactly sportsmanlike here.

Canada wins 7-3

Truth be told, Canada did something they didn’t do all Olympics long. They got off to a great start, scored early, and didn’t let up early.

Were I to grade Russia’s performance, I’d consider giving them a “G”, not even a “F” Bad start, terrible responses, and they didn’t build much on the few good shifts they got or either of their goals. Media will blame Nabokov, but the defense was miserable and the offense was dulled by Canada’s great play in all three zones on the ice.

Canada’s key here is to avoid listening to the media that will shower them with praise and adulation. Russia played TERRIBLE tonight. Canada took advantage – which is exactly what they had to do – but they can’t expect their next opponent to be as bad as Russia was tonight. Overconfidence will be their downfall – be it against Sweden or Slovakia.

Czech-Finland coming up next

I don’t think either is a good match up for the US, but that’s how the semifinals should be. All combinations will be difficult games.

I’d like to see Finland win because I like the American’s chances against Kiprusoff much better than Vokoun.

There hasn’t been much to comment about other than that

A) Finland appears out of sync and just don’t threaten all that much

Finland looks like a dangerous opponent for the US. Defensively sound and opportunistic. Sound like anyone you know?
