United States vs Canada - 2010 Winter Olympics Gold Medal Game Open Thread

Welcome to the final day of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  It was a long and hard-fought hockey tournament.  On the women's side, the Canadians prevailed over the Americans 2-0 in the gold medal final, thanks largely in part to Marie-Philip Poulin and goaltender Shannon Szabados.   On the men's side, Canada fought back from the qualification round to win three straight to make it to the gold medal game; whereas the American men have went undefeated throughout the tournament to get this far.

I will admit that while I certainly do hope that the United States wins the gold medal, I am proud of the fact that they got this far. Sure, in the short term, I won't be pleased that they lost; but did many even think they'd get this far?  No, the team was considered to be good, but not as great as Russia, Sweden, and especially Canada.  In fact, per Puck Daddy, the NHLPA scheduled flights back for the American players early on Sunday - not thinking they could be in the gold medal game. Yet, this team already beat Canada once and have avoided Russia and Sweden by winning what games they had. Yet, here they are.  I am glad to be wrong on second guessing Brian Burke's and USA Hockey's selections. Jack Johnson and Chris Drury have been useful, as have the whole roster. Short of Ryan Whitney, who has been played so little that it's not his fault, is there anyone on this team who hasn't contributed in some way?  Quite frankly, this is a very good team; this is not a miracle.  I repeat, THIS IS NOT A MIRACLE.

As for Canada, congratulations for getting this far when it looked bleak early.  Sure, one could argue that the playoff rounds weren't exactly challenging save for the final 9 minutes against Slovakia.  Nevertheless, it's all about results and you are where you were expected to be ever since the games were announced. This is not only a chance to get revenge over the Americans who beat you last weekend, but to end the games on a high note with a gold medal as Canada's "owning of the podium" has led them to third overall (behind Germany and, look at that, the United States of America).

Today is the final day of the Olympics. The Olympic break will officially end at midnight when rosters are unfrozen, trades will be made as the trade deadline looms in the distance, plans will be made for games to begin again on Tuesday (for most teams), and the focus will return to the usually-hectic March and April months in the NHL season.

Please use this post to place all your comments about the men's ice hockey final between the U.S. and Canada.  If you feel so inclined, SBNation.com has a GameThread up for this game.

All pressure

Is on Team Canada. Canada is supposed to be here. Anything less than gold is a disappointment to the country. Canada will go in with Luongo in goal, who has relatively little experience playing in these playoff type games. Only playing in the playoffs twice, in 2007 and 2009, both years with Vancouver, he made it to the 2nd round before being knocked out by Anaheim and Chicago, respectively. Anaheim went on to win the Cup in 2007 and Chicago was knocked out by Detroit. He has only given up over 3 goals in a playoff game 4 times out of his 22 appearances. The only notable player I see that did well against Luongo that plays for USA is Patrick Kane, who put in 6 goals on him when Chicago beat them in 6 games, including a hat trick in the clinching 7-5 win. Anyway, Luongo’s play has not been bad but still would not qualify him as one of the best in the tournament. Recently, it seems like the performance of the goaltenders in olympic games tends to have the biggest influence on the result, and right now Luongo is not playing at that level. While he will have his home crowd rooting for him, he has a lot of pressure in today’s game.

6 Favorites and no medal upsets

my honest opinion for the Men’s Ice Hockey tournament was that there were 6 favorites, basically equal in standing, for the 3 medals. Any arrangement of 3 of them on the podium would be considered a non-upset. Those 6 favorites all played last Sunday, by the way. Neither team winning today would be an upset in my mind.

by dyhrdmet on Feb 28, 2010 1:42 PM EST reply actions

Exactly. I don’t think anyone honestly felt the US was a favorite for the gold; but given how they’ve played, it’s no surprise at all. They’re a good team.

That’s why I am so emphatic that this is not a miracle.

I agree its no miracle but beating Canada twice would be a pretty big feat for team USA. Even though both teams are all NHL players Canada’s team looks a lot better on paper. Also playing in Canada gives them a slight advantage.

Hey, did you hear? Miller has to be good for the US to win.

by elesias on Feb 28, 2010 3:04 PM EST reply actions

I think the US can do it.

My keys to the game for the US:

  • Score first. Preferably early. Get the crowd out of it.
  • Be wary of screens and crease crashers. Since the last game against them, the Canadians have discovered that those tactics do indeed work… and international rules allow for goons like Getzlaf to get away with proverbial murder
  • Use those same screens and crease crashing to your own advantage
  • Miller has to be better than Luongo, which, I believe he is
  • Canada will put out a darn good defensive group against the top line so secondary scoring will be imperative

by elesias on Feb 28, 2010 3:09 PM EST reply actions

I largely agree.

Points #2 and #3 are the most crucial, I think.

I was 5 when the MIracle on Ice happened; didn’t follow hockey or the Olympics, didn’t even watch the game; and am not normally particularly patriotic… but whenever they break out the highlights they always send shivers down my spine.

Born in '88

I have watched the game a few times when it was on specials and what not. I get chills every time Al Michaels makes that call. Just amazing…The crazy thing I never knew until a couple years ago was that it was tape delayed for prime time. My father was at a bar in North Bergen during the game and said people barely knew anything about hockey but were going just insane. “Greatest day to be an American,” he said.

by CaramelCoveredXMas on Feb 28, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Intensely nervous, but it wouldn’t be a big game without some nerves!

Regardless, the boys are guaranteed at least a silver which, if you’d told any one of them before the tournament that was to be the case, to a man they’d have taken it.

Gold would be amazing, but there’s no shame in silver.
