New Jersey Devils: Ilya Kovalchuk Deal is Killer

OK so I had a son born today, but I'm waaaay too wound up to not write something about this.  My favorite hockey team, the one I've followed since the mid-80s, has acquired an offensive player that is considered top two or three in all of hockey talent-wise.  They've never had this in their history, and while some might argue that Parise falls into that category, Parise has the talent yes, but he gets a lot of what he does because he works like a demon for it.  Some guys like Kovalchuk are like an upgraded version of Stephane Richer.  Can score at will when they're putting in 100 percent effort, it's just that the effort comes and goes in waves.  Richer's beach had far fewer waves in his career.

This deal is great from every angle.  In many ways, it was the injuries earlier in the year that allowed the team to make this deal because Lou was able to realize how much depth he had on the roster when guys like Palmeiri, Davis and Zharkov came up to play, they did not look out of place.  Plus, someone like Zharkov or Davis might not be putting up the points that Bergfors did earlier in the year, but they also don't take shifts off or make too many bad plays defensively.  The Devils had someone like Fraser step up and excel.  And Corrente didn't look too out of place.  So it allowed the team to deal a Johnny Oduya and replace him with the apparent "downgrade" of an Anssi Salmela.

Plus the team still has Elias and Clarkson coming back and possibly, at some point, Paul Martin.  This team has been overperforming all year because of all the injuries and it's allowed Lou the flexibility to do something like this, even though, in all likelihood, the team will never re-sign Kovalchuk.

Patrice Cormier was a good prospect, but from all reports, seemed destined to be a two-way center at his top AND you realize that this guy has done the elbow thing not once, but twice.  That has to be a factor when thinking about someone in the Colin Campbell-policed NHL.  You're not going to get away with Tie Domi-esque infractions any more, especially having the microscope of you like the kid does now.

And as for the pick, well, I'll never discount the Devils ability to find someone great in the lower part of the draft, but for every Brodeur and Parise, you also have plenty of Adrian Fosters and Ari Ahonens.

So you take a run and a chance that the Devils will now score three or four goals a game with two great scoring lines (Elias-Zubrus-Kovalchuk and Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner), a very improved power play while not sacrificing defense in the interim.  It reminds me now of the 2000 and 2001 Devils teams, minus the Scott Stevens-type presence.  But the Devils should have more scoring up front than they've had since those great teams with the A-Line and Mogilny-Gomez.

The Devils will also achieve some cap relief as well if they don't re-sign Kovalchuk and they'll have a better shot at signing Parise and Martin to long-term deals if they so desire to.  And if they do happen to make Ilya happy, then perhaps they find a cornerstone player, a player that is more marketable than any player in the New York/New Jersey area.  And when have the Devils ever had that?  Not that they would take advantage of it like they should.

This seems like possibly one of the best deals Lou has ever orchestrated.  You had to believe that something was coming with how poorly this team has looked on the ice lately, with the worst result being the embarrassing loss to the Leafs the other night.  Lou is nothing if not completely adept at seeing when his team was floundering and had nothing going right.

It might not ultimately work out in a Stanley Cup for the Devils, but you have to admire Lou for doing something that was totally unexpected on the Martin Brodeur career end countdown clock. This deal is genius. It's pure Lou.

That's some dedication.

Congrats on the birth of your child!

From all angles and viewpoints, this sure looks like a steal on the Devils’ behalf. Let’s see, though, if it translates to the positive on the ice.

The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL

The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back

The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: It's Kovy Time!

Plus...

If they don’t re-sign him, maybe the Devils trade his rights before free agency opens up. Even if it’s for a conditional pick, Jay Bouwmeestering him just makes the deal that much better.

Apparently..

a couple friends are talking about a rumor that Kovy might be traded again to the islanders, specifically in the next 24 hours ( http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/fireice/ says otherwise). I haven’t seen it yet but I’m still looking.

If anyone finds something post it.

Unless there’s an actual link to an actual source saying such an actual thing, I think you should actually leave it alone.

He Will Stay In New Jersey

Lou is smart enough to know not to trade a 1st rounder, a newly resigned defensemen (Oduya) and a promising forward (Bergfors) (there was also Cormier) for Ilya if he was just a piece for another trade. If they can’t resign him which I suspect they will, (with none of my sources suggesting anything about Kovalchuks future with the devils) they will most likely do what Peter R said and trade him before free agency. I am sure Ilya’s eyes are set and mind is made up that he wants to make a push in the playoffs. The Devils needed that push. Meanwhile he passed up a lot of shots from the point and as a result got himself his first to points as a Devils. Nice first impression.

Are those "couplo friends" Islander Fans by any chance?

’Cause Kovy is going to make his Debut tonight against the Leafs. OOPS!

Consider This...

First off congrats on the kid.

Secondly whether Parise works like a demon for his talent or not doesn’t matter, he’s right there with Kovy. However Kovy was still a much needed deal. If you look at the last couple of cup winners in the Pens and the Red Wings they each had 2 players of that caliber on their teams (Detriolet with Datsyuk and Zetterberg and Pittsburgh with Crosby and Malkin). Also when you look at those teams neither of them had anything remotely close to a Martin Brodeur in net (Fleury being the model of INconsistency and Osgood never living up to his full potential). I don’t want to jinx anything but I have a good feeling about this team now.

Congratulations on your new son, Tyler! Great FanPost by the way, everyone take note.

I can’t disagree with much of what you said. I feel that the Devils had a few cornerstones, though, namely Scott Stevens and Martin Brodeur. OK, they weren’t marketable but their accolades speak for themselves.

I do especially agree about Salmela being a down-grade. While I still think he has the talent to be a solid top-4 defenseman, Oduya hasn’t been nearly as good as he was the last few seasons. Even if he returns to form, I don’t think it will haunt the Devils, especially if the Devils can retain Martin and Greene continues to play as well as (or close to it) he has this season. And if the Devils can’t retain Martin or Kovalchuk, then they have a ton of cap space to commit to Parise and get replacements.

The more I think about this deal, the more I like it. Even if it is a rental.

Congrats Blez!!!

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

First of all, congrats Tyler!

Secondly, yeah I think the Devils did alright. Brodeur is arguably the best goalie in NHL history, and he’s not getting any young. Why not trade 3 young assets to go for another great chance.

Atlanta got some good pieces, but then again they did too after the Hossa trade.

Totally Agree

A couple of hours after I asked when Lou will get it together, he has. This deal helps us and doesn’t hurt us. Even if Kovalcuk is a rental, this team now has the fire power to keep up with the elite teams. This deal reminds me of Lou of the past, adding the right piece at the right time to push this team to the max. Not to mention that this still leaves cap room to pull another deal to possibly remove pando or Motts from the line up. If that is done there is no stopping this team!

I seriously doubt this will just be a "rental"...

If experience has taught us anything(and if anyone has paid attention to Lou and the inner-workings of his mind), Lou is not the type of GM that would make a big splash like this and NOT Re-Sign the player he acquired.

I mean….this isn’t Jeff Friesen we are talking about here….THIS IS KOVALCHUK : ANOTHER REAL FRANCHISE-TYPE PLAYER LIKE PARISE IS!!

These players don’t come around often….especially in Trade Deals…..If you have the chance to lock him up, YOU DO IT. And I believe that Lou will and Kovy will be a Devil for as long as Parise is one. Kovy’s presence may add a few more years to Marty’s Career, too!! :)

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I think you make a great point…I hope you’re right!

I would love for you to be right about this but I think it all really depends on what Kovalchuk demands in the summertime. If Brodeur could preach the practice of humility that he has preached within the Devil’s organization since the beginning of his career, he may be able to convince Ilya that, with a slight salary reduction, he’ll greatly benefit the team’s ability to pick up other good players with the free cap space.

Even if Salmela is a “downgrade”, I don’t think this deal will burn the Devils at all. Being a Devs fan for my entire life, it’s especially hard to get out of the mindset of being worried about losing solid d-men or even worrying about how we are going to resign guys like Martin and Greene. As many people (including Lou) realized, we need to focus on creating more offense and I don’t think we could have made a better move to accomplish that. Time will certainly tell.

I totally agree with you on the point that this could be the best deal ever orchestrated by Lou and that he deserves credit for recognizing a weakness and taking action in an attempt to fix it.

Great write up, I think you made a lot of great points!
