My one complaint about the Devils

Just a thought on which I want everyone's opinion....

My lone complaint about being a Devils fan is our goal scoring celebration.  One, I'm not entirely crazy about the song itself, its seems a little dated.  Second, and much more important, I can't stand how after a goal, we all yell "YOU SUCK" repeatedly throughout the celebration...

Personally, I can't stand this.  I really feel that when the Devils score, we should cheer our team rather than than sound childish and insult our opponents.  (Besides, you don't need to suck before you give up a goal to Parise.)  I don't have an alternative chant to suggest, but want to hear everyone's opinion on the "You Suck" chant.  Personally, I'd like to change it.

Who agrees, who disagrees?

Do I kind of get where you’re coming from with this? Yes. Do I also kind of feel the same way when it’s cheered and am slightly thrown off from it? Sometimes, yes. But I think you might be letting it bother you a little too much. Plenty of other team’s victory music bothers me a heck of a lot more (woaaaoo let’s go rangers, anyone?). Whats funny is I don’t even really recall the fans doing this chant until maybe within the past two years or so. It’s relatively new. I sure as heck don’t remember this chant before the Rock. And I will ALWAYS love the “duhh, nuuh HEY” chant after scoring a goal regardless of the additions made.

Yeah, I like the “Hey!” But I’d much rather say “We Rule” or something like that rather than “You Suck”

haha well you can always say that. Maybe it’ll catch on.

I’d hope to be able to do a little better than that, suggestions?

It was always great for when Pando scored

I would yell “Jay” instead of hey.

Go Jets
Go Devils

I personally love it

I’m surprised more sports don’t do something similar to that.

Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.

Well If you yell “Jay” after a the rare Pando goal, please don’t follow it up with “you suck”

You see my conflict…

The HEY-YOU SUCK is actually a sports-universal response to Rock and Roll Part II.

I don’t think it’s leaving and I like it a whole lot better than yelling “RANGERS SUCK” at games where the Rangers aren’t at the Rock playing the Devils.

Though the only way it’s going away is if Rock and Roll Part II goes away and I doubt that’ll happen.

Also, if you can’t insult your opponents at a game, where can you do it? On the Internet? (Actually, you all will get a chance to do that soon.)

Yeah, but I feel like when we yell “You Suck” after a Devils goal, we’re not celebrating our team. Yelling “You suck” would be more appropriate after a sucessful PK then a Devils goal. I do agree with Fischer though, I think the only way it would end is if Rock and Roll Part II is replaced. Anyone know great sports anthems that won’t require royalty fees?

I think those are fair points and I understand why some fans may not like the YS chant, but when i sit with the Crazies or Wackos or Animals etc., then a goal is scored and we all scream YS during the song, that just adds to the frenzy. The section gets even more electrified. Otherwise, the chant itself is good, but kind of seems half-arsed. Call me a kid or what you will, but the YS chant for me = KEEP IT GOING.

Agnostic

While I do not yell “you suck” during the celebrating a goal, I feel it is still celebrating your team. It is like a gift from the goal scorer to the fans in attendance, the ability to be juvenile for 30 seconds while full of excitement. The only issue is potentially contextual, late goal with the game out of reach, empty netter etc.

how about

how about going to the old standby “Hey! Rangers Suck” or Avery Sucks or when they score on Lundquist “The King Sucks” lol…i dont know i feel the same i feel like a dirtbag flyers fan when yelling you suck its kind of classless and belongs in philly

So you think it’s classless to yell “YOU SUCK” but it’s not to yell “RANGERS SUCK” after a goal? Even if it’s not a goal against the Rangers?

Having moved from the home of Badger hockey to NJ in the early 80’s this chant is consistent with what the outside world expects from Jersey. It’s just our way of saying “Welcome to NJ”. I think we should also welcome all fans by having bathroom attendants dressed in the opposing teams jersey hand us little towels when we’re done urinating on the urinal cakes emblazoned with the visiting teams logo.

Well I like proving everyone wrong about their dumb notions about New Jersey. I read an article saying we’re dull and have struggled against the Caps all year. (Last I check, we’re up 3 games to 1 on the series this year). Lets not enforce dumb stereotypes about our state. Our hockey team is world class, I want the fans to be as well. I say leave the childish stuff for Philly fans.

Personally, I’m gonna try this, when it comes to say “you suck” im going with either “De-vils” “We Rule” or the goal scorers name. (Sadly, I can’t make a good 2 syllable version of Parises name, which, would be a problem)

Sure you can

I agree

The “you suck” chant is embarassing and classless. Just becuase other teams do it does not make it okay. There are plenty of songs with “hey’s” and what not the Devils can use to celebrate a goal. Saying “Rangers Suck” is just as bad. Makes no sense. I hate them too but we are the dominant franchise of the two not the Rangers.

My suggestion, finally

I say we chant “DE-VILS” rather than you suck. Not too original, I realize, but I’m open to hear other suggestions. Personally, thats what I’m going to chant from now on.

by SlimJims on Feb 6, 2010 5:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

you are absolutely correct, the you suck chant is childish and an embarassment. You raise a very cogent point by noting that we actually in a back handed way disrespect the acomplishment of our own team by collectively implying the goal was scored due to the opponents inability rather than our own team’s strength. It has to go, its truly a disgrace.
