Game #58 - Devils at Philadelphia Flyers

New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers, Feb 8, 2010 7:00 PM EST

TV: VERSUS (HD), with Joe Beninati, Keith Jones and Bob Harwood.

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Here's Fischer, and check out Broad Street Hockey for Flyers stuff.

Edited in Self-Promotion: I'm going to be calling in on Rink Side Radio tonight, discussing the Ilya Kovalchuk trade.  I'll be coming on at about 9:20 9:10, or near the end of this game which ups the potential for unintentional humor on my end.  If you miss it live, don't worry; the show is archived on Blog Talk Radio.

Song to Get You Pumped Up But Also Make You Think Deeply About Tonight's Game: In honor of last night's pretty terrible Super Bowl performance, here's The Who in better days, with "Won't Get Fooled Again".

Join me and Fischer in the comments.  Da' Rules: \all comments must be clean and relevant to the game.  Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Flyers or Devils in general is OK.  But please do not use this for other purposes and to talk about how Daltrey didn't hit a single note.   Above all, go Devils!\

It’s also the last away game this season that will be on Versus, the next one is at the Rock.

From Gulitti’s live post – and it’s a dose of beef. Peters AND Leblond in, Zharkov and Pelley out.

There’s a whole lot of battling but not much in terms of an actual threat from either side. Weird as both teams don’t look, as you would say, good in their own zone.

To be fair, Salvador rocked him with a hit, Carcillo bounced up and got hot, and Salvador is absolutely no stranger to getting hot himself, so it’s not like Peters/Leblond were to step in and go “Hey, it’s me you want.”

See, right just there on offense. The Devils go up on a 3-on-3, a Flyer stickchecks the puck from Kovalchuk, Elias recovers, moves it up to Kovalchuk, sees Zubrus in the high slot, but either Zubrus moves or the pass goes off target and instead of a shot on goal, it’s a puck in the skate and the defense is able to recover before Zubrus can fish it out.

Andy Greene with a stupid tripping call. No, the call is legit, it was just a dumb move by Greene.

I’m really concerned that the Devils are struggling at making good passes out of their zone and on the attack. They are bouncing off sticks and skates, and the Flyers easily collect and look to hit back. Brodeur’s made some big saves as a result.

Flyers PP should carry over.

VERSUS musical interlude going into the intermission was funky as hell.

by Steve Lepore on Feb 8, 2010 7:46 PM EST reply actions

The first period ends with a SH 2-on-1 and Langenbrunner hesitating enough looking for the pass to Zajac for Timonen to make a stop.

Devils should feel good about getting a goal – a power play goal, no less – but they really need to be calmer and patient with the puck. I know it’s a hated rival. I know there’s urgency. But these passes, these clearances, the Flyers are just collecting and hitting back. It’s only putting further and avoidable pressure on New Jersey, which has increased as the period has gone down. The penalties – McAmmond’s hook, Greene’s trip – weren’t good ones to take either.

As the second starts, the goal is obviously to kill the penalty. But after that, the Devils need to make smarter, softer, and simpler passes. IF they can do that, then they can work their way up to making more high risk/high reward dishes.

sorry

realized there are way too many pronouns in there.

bottom line. it was a little late, it was a little high, and it was a blindside hit. i would have called a penalty on that, but then again i’m not exactly unbiased. contact to the head has (and should rightfully be) a point of focus by hockey in general, and the nhl specifically

As an aside, one of the things I like about Kovalchuk? He can take a puck into the zone, take on defenders, and still maintain the puck. He’s good enough to do that.

i think a little of both

I am still disappointed with some of our turnovers in the defensive zone. But I think Salmela’s goal was beautiful.

I will say the Flyers defense needs to be more aware, they’ve let a puck sail up ice to a Devil shot on net that they cold have stopped more than once.

Devils seem to be picking it up and the Flyers seem to be struggling. Both could be playing better, but both could be playing worse.

I get the sense another goal is coming for the Devils, but I also get the sense that they’ll need at least 3 to win.

The Flyers fans should feel real happy – the Devils were the better team but the Flyers equalize.

The first goal against, I’m not sure what could have been done differently. The second goal started off quite oddly. The Devils fire a long shot on Leighton, the rebound is huge, and a defender (Pronger) just pitchforks it up ahead and Mottau is left as the lone man. I’m going to be real generous and assume he had no idea where Carter was since he was facing Hartnell the whole time. The pass went through and Carter has an easy goal.

A very big punch to the gut after a period where the Devils killed penalties well, got a shorthanded goal, Brodeur made some huge saves, and as you can see from the comments – many commenters are coming in just now to voice their displeasure.

The Devils NEED a response and the next goal to take some of the wind out of Philly’s sails and to take back this game. With 20 minutes left it’s very do-able.

First goal started on a breakout from a forecheck that Rolston blew because he was afraid to go into the boards with Pronger behind him. He pulled up instead and Pronger took it away from him. Marty should have had it, though.

Second was Mottau defending a 2 on 1 and playing the pass and the man and doing neither very well.

by elesias on Feb 8, 2010 8:49 PM EST reply actions

Anytime there is an odd man rush, the defender must immediately play the pass. Marty can manage the 1-1 match up with the panhandler.

by elesias on Feb 8, 2010 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed – but what if the other man is behind the defender? Because the whole way, Mottau’s vision was right on Hartnell. Which makes him worse because if he’s going to (stupidly) play the puckhandler, then he needs to GO to the puckhandler instead of put himself in no man’s land between the two.

If the other guy is behind him then he’s doing his job as he’s between the puck carrier and the 2nd man. He looked like he knew what he should have done but thought he knew better and ended up doing neither.

How are the Devs going to react?

Every time the Devs touch the puck, it seems like 3 Flyers are instantly there to batter the guy that has it. How does a team counteract that? I don’t know enough about hockey strategy to guess at the answer, but hopefully JL does . . .

by Doctor Smack on Feb 8, 2010 8:58 PM EST reply actions

The devils have sucked since the holiday break they are just going to loose in the first round of the playoffs. Sweep probably. Kovalchuck does nothing but shoot the puck at the glass he should go back to atlanta.

by WWZPD on Feb 8, 2010 9:42 PM EST reply actions

Horrible!!!

Unable to score on the PP, defense cant clear, Marty has to be sick or something, and Kovi doesn’t seem like the all star everyone says he is.
Hopefully we fix these issues.

Does anyone else think that all Kovi does is shoot from the point and sit back while everyone else is playing defense?

its a miracle we still are atop the Atlantic. Every year that we start off real hot and are great the first half of the year we end up disappointing at the end of the season, and gettin knocked out early (and firing coaches in the process) If you look back, its the years where maybe we didn’t start off that great, but we finished strong (ending not necessarily in the top 2) we’ve had better stretch runs, including all 3 cups

It’s because he plays point on every power play and it seems the Devils want to force every puck to him. I’m all for setting up strong shots and he has a great one (9 hit the net), but they need to mix it up.

Coaching

White and Mottau seem to get more ice time the worse they play… Jesus the 3rd flyer goal should have been cleared but another fansy pants clearing attempt.. Pandolfo needs to be taken out to the back 40 and put out of his misery.. Lemaire has to quit showing all this loyatly to Pando , white , and mottau … Fraser is a better D man than Motts…

No penetration on the PP all cycling around the outside… pathetic…

i dont think you can actually say you would rather have oduya than kovalchuk. if you remember we werent exactly playing great with oduya in the lineup. this slump started way before

Im picking the devils to lose the rest of the week. Seems like the route there going.

by WWZPD on Feb 8, 2010 9:49 PM EST reply actions

PK

Devils PK also was really weak. We had powerplays, and the flyers PK was pressuring the puck at all times, forcing the devils to make mistakes. When that Parise HS penalty came, our PK had 0 pressure and seemed to suck into the middle so much that the flyers just tick tack toed around us and scored (not to mention mottau lying on the ice, while timmonen took the puck around him)

Game over Devils lose again.

I am not going to blame Marty this time even though once again he was outplayed by a no name goalie. The power play is putrid. They had so many opportunities tonight it was pathetic. My daughter asked me how come Kovalchuk always shoots from way out there. He needs to get closer to the net. Losing Salmela put a lot of extra ice time on the shorthanded defense. Dissapointing loss once again. I am starting to worry about this team now.

red alert

Next thing you know, Kovy will fall under this funk that the rest of the team is under. Someone needs to step up as a leader and take charge of this team.

by Devil_Hard_Core on Feb 8, 2010 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

problems

i think with the players we have, the scoring will return, once kovy gets acclimated. More of a glaring problem I think is how the defense has seriously digressed in the slump. Failed clearances, turnovers, bad passes, and even little things like keeping the puck in the zone and blocking shots-the defense PROBLEM A with the Devils at this point.

Salvador is our only solid defenseman at this point. Fraser’s alright. Greene is looking like his old self, and White and Mottau have been just bad. I think we need some defensive reinforcements- ASAP

by alexajkj9 on Feb 8, 2010 10:02 PM EST reply actions

No more small puck movers in my opinion. This D needs to be beefed up so it can shut things down.

by Devil_Hard_Core on Feb 8, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Spot on re the defense.

This team has given up a number of leads, including two goal leads against Toronto, LA and now Philly.

I don’t want to pile on, but we need a change from Mottau. I think one of the guys needs to come up from Lowell.

Peters is awful and I have no idea why they are wasting a roster spot. The have PL3 as an enforcer. Bring up some of the other guys again.

Anyone who is trashing Kovy at this point is showing that they are a typical overreacting fan, and has NO BASIS for their opinion. When the guy has not scored in 10 games, let me know. I liked Bergfors, but he has now scored 1 goal in 2010, but he was going to be the answer this year. I just don’t agree.

That being said, I see no way they hold off the Penguins.

This sucks.

The injury had a bigger affect than we think

I honestly think only having 5 D for the nearly the entire 2 & 3rd periods did have a great impact on the outcome of this game. Losing Salmela will be tough . . .

But my general problem with the D is that they don’t look confident. know it is hard to criticize them when our offense isn’t producing. But re-watch the 3rd period. When they got possession in their zone, they simply just tried to get it past the blue line. While this is a smart strategy if you’re holding onto a lead, and then it is even an edgy strategy – it has seemed to reveal the tentative style the D is playing recently: They are playing to NOT make a mistake. They’re not playing assertively – having patience in their own zone and looking for a nice outlet pass. In the offensive zone, they’re not trying to hold the pucks in and just trying to give a couple extra strides back and be safe on D. But this is not the killer instinct that your D should have when trying to win hockey games. They’re doubting themselves and that’s what I’ve seen recently.

Looking at their plus/ minus since the slump (starting the TB game) – it is not overwhelming bad, but every guy a minus isn’t good either. Would love to see the PP vs/ the PK during this slump though too.

White – 3
Fraser -3
Mottau -3
Salvador -2
Greene -1

They should call up Ekford or Corrente to take some of the load off of this tired defense.

Trying something before break would be nice . . . I never said tired in my above post, but you nailed it. They look tired, well Fraser is the only one to me who doesn’t.

Olympic Break

Agreed. I think the break for the majority of the team (namely the defense) can only be positive at this point. It can’t get any worse. Hopefully we come back realizing that we have some work to do

by alexajkj9 on Feb 8, 2010 10:12 PM EST reply actions

Also need to spend more time in their end.

Whatever happened to the cycling offense we were playing earlier in the year. Especially in the second half of the game. WE are spending most of our time in our own zone during this bad stretch.

Donald Vasquez

by don_vas on Feb 8, 2010 10:12 PM EST reply actions

toughness

beginning of the year, we were winning 75% or more of loose puck battles in the offensive zone. We were tough, gritty and winning those 50/50 pucks, and turning those into scoring chances, and goals. Now we’re having a hard time gaining the zone, winning pucks, and getting quality chances from scoring positions. I really am tired of seeing Rolston take weak wristers from the side boards. If we are going to dump, we need to be tougher in the trenches- period.

by alexajkj9 on Feb 8, 2010 10:15 PM EST reply actions

Rolston looks lost playing the right wing.

Rolston looks like he is having a hard time getting any kind of shots to the net. He seems out of position to me.

nobody mentions Clarkson.

Donald Vasquez

by don_vas on Feb 8, 2010 10:18 PM EST reply actions

Rolston

Just like last year, Rolston is pulling somewhat of a disappearing act. Lemaire was supposed to restore Rolston’s scoring touch. It looks like he’s just played himself into a 3rd liner again this year.. Honestly have barely heard his name in the past couple games.

And very true, Clarkson is a bigger loss than people think

by alexajkj9 on Feb 8, 2010 10:19 PM EST reply actions

I disagree a little on Rolston – while his scoring has been inconsistent, he’s been the forechecker on that third line and provides a nice complement with Niedermayer and Pandolfo, two players who really can’t match up with Rolston’s offensive skills.

Rolston got blocked 3 times tonight and only played 15:27. Normally he’s the point man on the second power play unit, but since Kovalchuk’s on both units – maybe something that needs to change? – the puck’s going to Kovy instead of Rolston. Defensible, Kovalchuk’s got a hard slapshot too; but that contributes to Rolston’s quiet game, I think.
