NHL Trade Discussion
With the roster freeze having been lifted just last night at midnight, and such a short window of opportunity, there may be a flurry of activity and I thought we could try a single place to keep track of and discuss the various moves and if and how they might affect the Devils.

NHL reports Penguins get Leopold from Panthers for a 2010 2nd round pick.
The consensus at Pensburgh seems to be a collective, “Meh.” It does seem that Shero is making moves to address the Penguins obvious flaws on defense by adding some size, but I don’t think Leopold should scare anyone.
He’s a pretty decent defender. Wouldn’t have minded him as a Devil as a #4 guy.

What are everyone's thoughts about the possibility of
the Devils picking up Hamhuis? Good decision? Bad decision?
I wasn’t at all impressed by him in the one game I got to see him play.
He’s a UFA at the end of the season, and not too expensive for a top 4 Defenseman (2.5m this year, but probably looking for a raise). I wouldn’t mind having him on the team, but I wouldn’t want to lose prospects or anything for him. He’s not overly large (6’1 209lbs) or, based on his numbers, particularly offensively gifted, so he doesn’t really address any issues the team currently has other than adding a reliable Dman into the fold to spread out the minutes.
I was thinking the same thing.
Although it looks like he’ll go to the Flyers anyway.
Getting into rumorville here, but CSNPhilly reports:
…sources said that [Predators GM David] Poile told three clubs – believed to be the Flyers, Boston and either New Jersey or Toronto – that unless someone "knocks his socks off," he would not move Hamhuis.
If Poile is looking for a first round pick, which he may be considering Leopold got Florida a 2nd rounder, then he’s not coming to NJ.
Agreed. Even though Atlanta’s second round pick may be early; a pick and a prospect not going to knock anyone’s socks off – much less Nashville for Hamhuis.

I would rather have Niedemayer.
I think they should either bring up someone from Lowell or try to get Scott Niedemayer because he knows the devils system and can boost up the power play.
Donald Vasquez
NHL reports Thrashers pick up Artyukhin from the Ducks (formerly of the Lightning) for Oystrick and a conditional pick.
I don’t remember much about him except that he’s a monster and I didn’t enjoy watching him out there hitting the Devils players when he on TB. Doesn’t look like he’s got much of a scoring touch (9 points in 37 games this season), so I’m guessing TB is looking for enforcers. Maybe they’ll take Peters off our hands?

If Lou can pull that off, then he should go into the Hall of Fame for Amazing Trades (Though you can argue Cam Janssen-for-Bryce Salvador is good enough for enshrinement)

Not a trade but... Chelios?

Isn’t he like 50?
If Andrew Peters ever plays again it will be too soon.

Yikes
Talk about a desperation move!
The article wasn’t entirely clear, but it sounds like he’ll be on the minor league team until (if) the Thrashers call him up.
Atlanta is obviously making its move to ensure a deep run into the playoffs. Just think, a top pairing of Oduya and Chelios!
My name is John Fischer and I approve this FanShot for discussion
Carry on. P.S. Frontpage’d.

A name just jumped out at me on the UFA list… Anton Volchenkov of the Senators.
He’s making 3.2m this year and will certainly be looking for a raise. He’s a pretty big guy (6’1 226lbs) and a shot blocking machine, but seems to have some history of not playing a full season, most likely due to injuries caused by being a shot blocking machine.
He’s not a major scoring threat, but he racks up some decent assists, and he’s 28; prime Dman age.
Downsides are: the reliability issue (best year was 78 games in 06-07); he’s probably looking for a long term deal to ensure his financial future, considering his job description entails putting himself in between 90+ mph slap shots; and Ottawa is going to want more than the 2nd round pick the Devils have to offer.
Thoughts?
Gotta give to get, and I’m sure if the right deal came along they might consider it… but point taken.
I was thinking more along the lines of an off-season thing anyway, I wouldn’t want him as a rental… but he sure would fit in pretty nicely on the Devils blueline in 10-11.
I would like to agree with drhgzang; but if Ottawa doesn’t think they can retain Volchenkov, now really is the best time to move him. As mentioned, he’s 28, he’s very strong in his own end, and the only real negative – and it’s a big one considering his style of defending – is durability. He’s still going to command a significant amount of money. Unless Ottawa is willing to commit serious money to him going forward – and they might – I would think they’ll at least listen to some serious inquiries.

Anaheim’s Nick Boynton went to Chicago in exchange for the dreaded future considerations.
Someone on Chicago’s getting dumped – they have next to no cap space now.

Thinking about Scott Niedermayer
Think again. Per Darren Dreger’s tweet, the Devils inquired but the Ducks aren’t looking to move him.

Go Team USA !!!
Hockey is my life, even though I can barely skate. Anyone willing to take on a good athlete that will learn to skate (with time) for their inline hockey team? Let me know!

Didn’t think they would. They’re right on the bubble in a really tight race and have as good a chance as most of squeezing in and making some noise.
Besides, I’m thinking this is Scotty’s last year and if that’s the case, he might not want to have to live out of a hotel for the last few months of his career.
NHL.com reporting Toronto trades LW Alex Ponikarovsky for D Martin Skoula and prospect Luca Caputi.
Ponikarovsky is a big body and has 19-22-41 in 61 games. Seems like a steal for a Pittsburgh team making moves to address its flaws.
Guess I have to go back to hating Burke now…
