Game #66 - Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils, Mar 12, 2010 7:00 PM EST

TV: MSG Plus (HD)

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Here's Fischer's, and join Pensburgh for some good ol' fashioned Pens fun.

Song to Get You Pumped Up But Also Make You Think Deeply About Tonight's Game: Because it's game #66, Van Halen's "Runnin' With the Devil".

Join me and iFisch in the Chat.  Da' Rules: Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Pens or Devils in general is OK.  But please do not use this for other purposes and to talk about how Van Halen > Van Hagar.   Above all, go Devils! I live my life like there's no tomorrow.

I’m looking live at the Rock and there sure are a lot of Pens jerseys already. When you are the flavour of the year, that’ll happen I suppose.

I love running with the devil. One of the few Van Halen songs I like. It’s funny watching the bassist, who has like one note over and over again.

Hockey related, did anyone else notice the Caps are only 1 point away from 100? And that they already clinched their division? Damn, I knew they were ahead, but not that much.

huge game

tonight

let’s hope the Devils D is here for real, and i wish we scratched pando – totally useless, slow, can’t shoot, can’t pass,

i’d rather take pelly – who hits and generates more o than Pand – NO “O”

Go devils!

3rd line needs to really step it up

bc rolston is overpaid at 5 million, he needs to put up more goals and niedermayer has got to use more of his speed,

frankly i’d put zharkov with elias and kovy, langs is a little too slow for that line

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

what's with

these penguin rushes at the blue line, where’s our D?

I’m not liking how the Pens keep getting better chances, but at least the Devils aren’t folding.

the rolston

goal against the rangers was lucky, and it was almost broken up even tho it was 3 on 1, seriously after the kovy trade, i thought we had 3 legitimate lines, well the top 2 have produced but 3rd hasn’t really done much and i could understand if it was randy mckay, peluso, and holik, but they have more speed than that, along with a shot.

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions

Fraser

may have made a big mistake last game…but the kid has a ton of energy and is one of the few D men on our team taht actually feel like HITTING people is necessary. Id like to see him play more often.

by Drew95.00.03 on Mar 12, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

watch the 3rd line

shifts, not enough energy, and just kind of dump and chase, but no chase, plus

don’t get back on D, i want them to do well, but they look like they are in a daze,

hopefully they score, bc if they score, i feel we can win every game

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 7:33 PM EST reply actions

I’ve been watching the third line and they’ve done as well as you could really expect.

i have been watching

sans Clarkson who i like a lot, and could see him on the 2nd line,

nieds and rolston play like they’re in the ahl, i don’t know if they are tired or just old and don’t have that same fight to get the puck from the boards.

they are just lackadaisical to me,

First period over

I liked the start, but when Crosby’s scored, the Pens have been better in general. But NJ isn’t floundering, they just need to be tighter in their own zone and in moving the puck up.

That said, 1-1 against Pittsburgh after 1 isn’t so bad of a spot to be in.

Yeah but...

We are playing the Pens and they are going to be a playoff team so this should be a very good gauge has to where we stand going into the playoffs and if that was our best 5 min PP effort the playoffs will be very short.

by brodeurman89 on Mar 12, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

So

That just proves my point more. If we have outscored them all season why is it that we only had 4 shots in 5 minutes.

by brodeurman89 on Mar 12, 2010 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

so by that logic

we should lose this game, since we haven’t scored enough yet,

and this is a healthy pens team, give me a break, plus they came from playing in carolina in overtime yesterday night,

i remember the devs against chicago – flat as hell, yet the pens are flying around us.

if you're supposedly a top flight

team, that’s supposed to be a contender,

u get a better sustained attack on a 5 min major power play than we what we put up there,

take offf the devil colored glasses,

and frankly, the devils did not get better as the period went on,

your right bdevil89… sorry Steve..

by atlantic division on Mar 12, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

thanks

we have chico for the homerism,

but i’m trying to be rational here, even though i’m a huge devils fan and have been watching these guys since 92, look up for my peluso reference,

I actually saw the game with brodeur in his debut in the christmas colored jerseys

not a fairweather fan here, and what i see is not good, esp. for the level of talent on this team

our D is really bad compared to the other D’s of Devils past, and will get lit up by the likes of the Caps

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

See, now that was a reasonable way of putting things. It’s not all gloom and doom. Yes there’s cause for concern, but no reason to panic.

The Reality

We are tied 1-1 with the Stanley Cup Champions and the #2 seed in the Atlantic Division.

In a game where both teams have had their chances, but we have had more.

Should we be winning? Maybe. Fleury’s been out of his mind.

But we are playing better than they are.

by Steve Lepore on Mar 12, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

Beg your pardon

I’d agree with your take on this, at least in the second period. I’d say the Penguins very slightly outplayed the Devils in the first. Very slightly.

If I were the type to bite my nails, I wouldn’t have any left by now. Your PP doesn’t look that good, but overall the Devils are making this very difficult for Pittsburgh.

by JustinM on Mar 12, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

yeah

but you made the argument that we outscored the pens 15-2 in the last 4 games,

what happened? fleury is not playing out of his mind, we’ve been putting shots wide on high quality scoring positions whereas the pens have been putting those shots on net, and brodeur has been making some great saves.

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Look at the shot chart and tell him that again. You guys got a ton of chances that hit the net.

no one is saying they're

the worst team, but they are severely underachieving for what type of talent they have on the team, and supposedly how good we are given that we were on top of the division and 1st in the conference for some of the season.

wow kovy finally showed up!!!! 3 PointS!!!!

by devils82 on Mar 12, 2010 9:20 PM EST reply actions

Rule 69

Rule 69 – Interference on the Goalkeeper
69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper – This rule is based on the premise
that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the
crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be
allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking
players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances
be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking
player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s
ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an
attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a
goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact
with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when
such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the
attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.
The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice
judgement of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or
review.

give it a rest

zajac interefered on one, and greene finally put one on net this time,

it’s not funny anymore, and we never said we’re the worst team, we have high expectations and i’m sure so does lou,

if he didn’t think we could win this year with talent we had on the team, then he doesn’t make a blockbuster deal.

what we are criticizing is that the devils practice and talk about what they are going to do, but when you get power play time like that, it’s crucial you get high quality scoring chance and increase our probablity of getting a crucial goal in a close game

this is necessary for the playoffs, watch a couple of caps games, hell watch carolina lately they came back against the pens with the help of their power play

we need to be better esp if we are trying to win the cup, if you’re happy with winning in the regular season, then more power to you and continue with your corny jokes,

but we expect more from this team,

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

So...

Any Greene, has REALLY stepped up tonight

by Drew95.00.03 on Mar 12, 2010 9:22 PM EST reply actions

by bdevil89 on Mar 12, 2010 9:33 PM EST reply actions

hey steve

no hard feelings, but i’m just being an objective fan, and watching the other elite teams in the league, we need to improve vastly,

the pens are good, but the caps and the west coast teams are better, look at san jose, even though we beat them, those guys were never out of it, and put a flurry of goals in a short span, that can’t happen in the finals/playoffs if we want to win,

it’s called constructive criticism, the power play was really bad tonight, let’s be honest and needs to be more effective for us to challenge the caps, and even buffalo in our own conference let alone the west coast
