Does Kovalchuk Belong in a Devils Uniform?
Was Kovy the Right Decision?
I have been a Devil's fan for a long time and I have watched them a lot throughout this year and we were rolling before the Olympic break, but now we have just hit a dry spout. Everyone knows Marty has been letting in some "soft" goals lately, but the defense has not been much help, which makes me ask the question "Was trading Oduya a bad decision?"
I mean Kovy is a great player and has a total of 627 points but he is still a -82. He has played on some bad Atlanta teams but it still shows you how he is a one-way hockey player unlike most of our Devils. Besides his plus/minus he does have some other flaws and one of the greatest being the long shifts and the super long shifts on the power play.
Oduya was a great offensive minded defensemen and he could also be put on the ice when there was only a minute left in the game. He was pretty good, plus he had just signed that long term contract meaning stability for both him and the Devils. In my mind Oduya was good enough to be a number 2 or 3 defenseman and a player I would love in my line up and day of the year.
We also gave away Niclas Bergfor. Bergfors wasn't a bad hockey player but currently is on a streak having 8 points (6 G, 2 A) in only 12 games. Not bad for a rookie, but we all know that he was a streaky player and was too tiny to go into the corners.
Kovy is an amazing hockey player on the offensive side of the puck. I have studied him with and without it, but when I see his lack of effort sometimes (diving to stop a breakaway because he is so tired) it makes me wonder if this trade helped or hurt the Devils. I would just love to hear what other people think because I am so up and down and have know idea what to think anymore.

I’m sure this question will come up over and over – hopefully not after every loss.
I’m a little confused though, Bergfors putting up 6 goals and 2 assists in his last 12 games is good. So what does that make Ilya Kovalchuk’s 5 goals and 7 assists in his last 13 (last night was the 13th game)?

Deal had to be done.......
Devils were faltering with Oduya and Bergfors. Nick was a hot cold player. In the beginning he was on fire and he got fatigued and fell through in the late times. Oduya was just a disappointment… Give the guy a brand new contract comming off an excellent season and he plays like he did. You never know with Cormier… He could be a 3rd line center or 2nd. Pending on what Atlanta does with him… The 1st round pick will probably be from picks 23-30… With Kovalchuk we got Salmela… To me watching the recaps on NHL on the Fly Salmela looks a lot better then Oduya right now.
I think this was a great deal for the Devils and don’t even know why your questioning it… You would think Lou would resign him no matter what giving of what he had to give up to get Kovy in the first place…

I think the return of Martin will help offset those that believe Oduya should have never been traded away. The fact of the matter is Oduya really was not having a good year and who knows if he would have continued his sub-par play into the post season, but also years after this one? I think Oduya was more replaceable than some people are making him out to be. I was a fan of him when he was a Devil but thought he got slightly overpaid for his talent level over the summertime. I’m looking forward to seeing how Martin evens out the defensive end, as he will ultimately be a crucial addition in what most of us regard as our weakest link right now: the defensive end of the ice.
I was a big fan of Bergfors when he was with the Devils. He showed a ton of potential and had some huge goals, as well as very memorable ones (anyone remember that goal against Philly at the Rock when he slipped through two defenders and scored?). That being said, Bergfors was definitely hitting a wall and was slumping just as hard as anyone else on the team. It was clear Lemaire was losing confidence and patience with him by dropping him down the lines before the trade.
I don’t think the New Jersey Devils system of playing hockey is an easy one to learn. I think it requires a much higher standard of accountability and discipline, one in which Kovy was not required to have in an Atlanta uniform. While I don’t necessarily think Kovy will be back next year, it’s still widely uncertain and in my eyes completely dependent upon how well the Devils do for the remainder of the season and beyond. But in regards to your question of whether Kovy belongs in a Devils uniform, I think he belongs in one just as much as Mogilny did and both of them were/are the best in the business at doing what they were brought in to do: scoring goals and drawing the attention of the opposition.

I think the return of Martin will help offset those that believe Oduya should have never been traded away.
The only problems with that is how long is it going to be before Martin returns? And when he does return, how long before he’s back to 100%?
I don’t think the answer to either question will be pleasant.
Go Jets
Go Devils
Well per TG’s most recent article, it looks as if Martin has returned to practice last night against Long Island and it seems as if he’ll be returning sometimes towards the end of the week. Saturday’s game againts the Blues seems to be likely. Although that date is not set it stone. So to answer your first question, it looks like he’s returning soon. If not this week, than next week.
As far as when it’ll be before he’s 100%, I doubt anyone knows that answer. It may not be this season. Fortunately for us, a 60% Paul Martin is better than half of the defensemen in the league.

Its a must to......
Sign Kovalchuk…. You just have to. From what you gave up to get this guy you need to resign him longterm. If the Devils can get past the 1st round and give Kovy hope think of what he’ll think if he was there for the whole season.

Kovalchuk isn’t the problem – it’s the people who are running the power play. Kovy isn’t going to score a ton of goals or be extremely successful from the top of the point. He needs to play lower down.
As for his even strength play – the more you watch him, the more it becomes clear he’s willing to play devils hockey. His first two games here he’d take extended shifts but now you see him dump the puck and change.
About Kovy
The trade was a great for the Devils because they added a true scorer to thier 2nd line. What they gave up to get him was not much in my opinion – Bergfors (who I liked) is a good player but not at Kovy level of putting the puck in the net. Johnny O / Salmela I truely liked Salmela last year and he will not cost what Johhny would for the next 2 years (so cap space – possible to re-sign Martin).
We have guys down in lowell and other leagues throughout the world who can re-place the guys lost in this trade. BUT we get from Kovy is a guy who stays out far to long and PLAYS ZERO Defense - I mean what was that move on the power play where Islanders scored — I am going to fall down and ACT that I tried to slow him up.

I have to disagree with you on Kovy’s defensive play. I think he plays far harder on the forecheck and the defensive zone then many give him credit for. Although i think he tries a little to hard to do everything himself on occasion, I really like what he brings to the table for us this coming playoff season.
Oh, and i will never miss Oduya….and we have too many wingers better than Bergfors to keep him around. Selling both at their highest points is just another example of Lou’s fine work.

Contracts
Giving up Oduya was absolutley the right thing to do lucky we found a team willing to take on that new fairly long deal for the way Oduya played this year and we got a world class player in place of freeing up what about 3.5 mil for the next 4 years had this deal not been made everyone would be complaining that Oduya is not worth his contract just like Zubrus and Rolston everyone is counting the days for those contracts to be up and i believe the same would be thought of Oduyas for the next 4 year Bergfors disappeared after a hot start im not always a fan of dumping a player bc they cooled off for a while but to get Kovalchuk for Bergfors and dumping Oduyas deal absolutley no doubts worth it!!
Point per game player
also Kovy thus far has averaged a point a game for us imagine what our offense would look like with out his production and i dont think he has even shown 80% of his abilities yet once he fully settles in and learns his linemates tendencies he will be even more productive and explosive
I'm pro Kovy-Deal
Have you seen his shot in NHL10? Makes playing with the Devils much more enjoyable :)
On a serious note though, I don’t think we lost that much defense. Sure, Oduya was a fan favourite-ish, but we’ve seen him pull a Mottau every now and then on defense, and we know what that’s like.
The BIGGEST positive I see, are the Devils offensive lines. I don’t remember the Devils ever having the offensive firepower that they have now. The Devils now have atleast three legitimate scoring lines, and the fourth line is still pretty damn good with Pando/Dean/(fill-in-the-blank). As Zajac said, the Devils probably have the best top three lines in the league, and it sure as hell would be a disappointment to see it all go to waste this season.
RARITY
Kovalchuk has the unusual qualities of being UNRESTRICTED, YOUNG and a SUPERSTAR. He is a legit goal scoring threat every second he is on the ice.
If we can resign him to a reasonable contract (by reasonable I mean 9 mil a year) we should consider it, but we need to be able to sign Parise also and he has a big pay day coming.
If the Penguins can afford Crosby and Malkin and still have several other star quality players and compete for and win a cup, we should be able to do the same with Kovalchuk and Parise.
OVERPAYING for the likes of Zubrus/Rolston/White/Pandolfo are more the issue then signing kovachuk for what he is worth. White and Pandolfo could never get the money they are now recieving if they were UFA. Zubrus and Rolston are productive, but still overpaid.
The value of PARISE/KOVALCHUK type players beyond the obvious of winning and scoring points is they are a draw for the fans and sell tickets, which is so important to our franchise. We should be selling out at least half our home games, as teams with worse records continue to sell more tickets then us.

Though I might quibble about $9m being reasonable.
As has been pointed out, the Devils didn’t really lose anything by acquiring Kovalchuk, even if it is only for this season. He’ll never win a Selke, true, but the criticisms of his poor defense are a bit overstated. He’s impressed me at least once each game with a nifty steal or backcheck.
And there is no overstating what just his presence on the ice does for the offense. It’s taken some time to find some chemistry, but the past few games have showed that he’s definitely finding his niche. Just before the Pittsburgh game, for example, many Penguins fans were keen on pointing out how his scoring pace for the season was down and how he just wasn’t fitting in, etc., and then he puts up a 1g-2a-3pt night. But even more than that, like in the Rangers game where he had no points, teams have to respect him out there and that gives guys on his line like Elias, and even the other lines, more room to work. Other teams have to figure out how to defend two strong lines and deal with the potential of two or three straight shifts of defending against a strong cycle (which, in a 7 game series, wear defenses down quickly, to the ultimate advantage of the Devils).
All that being said, I do find his play a bit selfish at times. I’m not entirely keen on his playing the entire power play, nor am I big on the moments when he seems to get it in his head that he’s got to win the game on his own and either forces plays or else tries to beat all 5 guys on his own. And I do take issue with his defensive acumen at times. He plays harder on defense than I remember him playing with Atlanta, but, as was pointed out on the diving play against the Islanders, sometimes he gets caught out of position and he goes for the high risk/high reward, low-percentage play instead of following the Devils credo of taking the safe and sure road and making the high-percentage play (in that case, it would have been to use his speed to skate back and either harass the puck carrier, who was shorthanded and probably not as willing to attack if he had a man on him, or else get back into position to help defend any pass on the developing odd man rush).
So, in short, yes. I think he belongs in a Devils uniform… and not just because the team is paying his salary, but because his talent demands respect, and that can only help the team.
As is always the answer to that question, whatever the market will bear.
I, personally, don’t feel he’s worth that much. He’s explosive and has a heck of a shot and can undeniably alter a game, but I don’t think he has the ability to take over a game like those other three guys can at times, and that, to me, lowers his value as far as being in their league.
Unfortunately, someone somewhere will probably be willing to pay that kind of money for his services… I just don’t know how I would feel about the Devils matching it.
no way he signs for less then 8 mil. if lou gets him to sign for less then that it would be a miracle.
I diasagree that he doesnt take over games. The bruins were totally focused on him last night. It was no accident that we got 2 goals from the third line, as the bruins had intended on shutting down Parise and Kovalchuk, and the third line stepped up. Three lines scoring is the only way we win in the playoffs.
No way he should be getting over 8.5. Those three players are arguably the three best in the league. Ovechkin has won almost every award a scoring forward can get and Crosby (GOLD MEDAL BOY). Malkin is usually a 90 point player. I would love to see Kovy sign for 8.25 but I don’t think it would happen. I did write this post and I would love to thank everyone for posting.
Argument?
There are a few different arguments/points here that I want to speak about:
1. The Devils were not playing well before they traded for Kovalchuck. They had just been shut out by Toronto and were not generating enough 2nd line offense. They had been struggling throughout January.
2. There has been some bad defense recently, but trading Oduya in a deal for Kovy is a no brainer. Oduya had been OK this year and in the current NHL economy Oduya is not worth 3.5MM a year. Not when Martin Zidlicky is getting $4MM a year.
3. Oduya is far from a great offensive defenseman. He is a servicable second pairing guy who will occassionally get some points. His money coming off the cap next will be beneficial (especially if the overall cap number drops) as that money can be distributed to Clarkson’s raise, other RFA raises and a little bit towards Martin if necessary.
4. Bergfors has potential, but I don’t want to pay him a any raise as an RFA for his goals that were a result of Parise or someone elses hard work. He will probably be a high 20’s scorer in his career, but he needs others to be good around him, he didn’t seem to make others better.
5. As far as Kovalchuk’s D, I think he is improving and I love his team focus. I had thought he would be a selfish player, but he seems to be fitting in well with the team in the little instances I have noticed. As an example after the Penguins game last Friday, Parise skated right up to him on the ice to hug him. Seeing things like that are huge in my view. As far as his teams not doing well in Atlanta, I have a feeling he will excel the most (either here or somewhere else) where he can be the second fiddle, and since this is Zach’s team this setup works well for him.
