Game #69 - Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils, Mar 17, 2010 7:00 PM EDT

Happy St. Patrick's Day, and 1-Year Anniversary of St. Marty's Day Edition

TV: MSG Plus

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Check out Fischer's here, and our pals at Pensburgh have the black and gold news.

Songs to Get You Pumped Up But Also Make You Think Deeply About Tonight's Game: How about one from the year the Devils came to New Jersey and first donned the red and green (1982) and the final year until now that they wore those colors (1992).  1982 was kind of a lame year for music until Thriller showed up, so let's use "Beat It" from that record, something the Devils would very rarely do during that inaugural year.

1992 is another curious year.  Many of the greatest albums released in my lifetime were either 1991 (Which might be rock n' roll's best post-Beatles/Stones/Zep/Sabbath year ever: Nevermind, Ten, The Black Album, Achtung BabyOut of Time, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Use Your Illusion I and II) or 1993 (Siamese Dream, August and Everything After, In Utero), 1992 is kind of light.  So let's give Alice in Chains some love and go with "Would?", my favorite tune off of '92's Dirt

I'm actually at the game tonight!  So is Fischer, but he'll be mobile commenting.  Behave yourselves.  Da' Rules:  Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Pens or Devils in general is OK.  Keep it clean and relevant at all times.  But please do not use this for other purposes and to talk about your favorite albums of yesteryear.   Above all, go Devils!

1991 (Nevermind, Ten, The Black Album, Achtung Baby, Out of Time, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Use Your Illusion I and II) or 1993 (Siamese Dream, August and Everything After, In Utero)

Pshaw! Kids.

Once again, Steve, you overlook the Maiden! ‘Number of the Beast’, perhaps their best album of all, was released in 1982.

To the rest, any list of “greatest albums” that includes Nirvana is automatically disallowed for poor taste…

by elesias on Mar 17, 2010 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

I don't overlook, I ignore.

And anyone who discounts Nirvana is simply hating because the band ended metal’s golden era.

by Steve Lepore on Mar 17, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

By the late 80’s and into the early 90’s when bands like Motley Crue and Poison were considered “metal” and Metallica was donning guyliner and singing about their feelings, it was already long past the golden era. Grunge was just the next thing to come along.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against Nirvana. I wore out my copy of Nevermind like everyone else, at the time. They’re just not nearly as good or innovative as so many seem willing to give them credit for.

by elesias on Mar 17, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I rate Powerslave more than Number.

There’s a band outside in Championship Plaza with drums and bagpipes, my cue to get inside quickly. Ton of Devils jerseys out in force early on a gorgeous afternoon. Let us hope the evening is even better.

I'm stuck in Manhattan (at work) surrounded by...

drunks in green…who I suspect are all wearing Rangers jerseys underneath their St. Pats disguises. But I am escaping early to make my way to the peace and quiet of my living room and TV….to celebrate this holiday how i see truly fit. Never mind shamrocks and leprechauns….(although I always thought Elias looked a little too leprechauny for a Czech)

His name is Patrick. Totally leprechauny. Though I’ve always felt like he looked a bit like a hobbit….

Already there is a complaint from the fans

Apparently the Goal Bar on the lower concourse is closed.

Personally, this has no effect on me; but I don’t know why today would be different from any other game when it’s open.

I spoke too soon

So I go out to the concourse and I see people up in the Goal Bar section. In fact as I type this, I see people going up

Apologies for the mistaken comment.

There has to be at least a thousand people (two?) in the Devils’ end for warm ups. Warm ups!

Not as many Pens supporters here. Expect a decidedly loud and large crowd in support of NJ.

Pittsburgh has had the better of possession. Better passing, more effective dump-ins, and so they look much better. Devils need some energy, get this crowd more into it.

First period done

I am officially wrong about Paul Martin; I admit my comments in the preview were shortsighted.

What a great shot. The Devils opened the game up after that, Brodeur bailed them out once, but the Devils look pumped. A big turnaround from a lethargic opening 5-7 minutes.

Second period over

Pittsburgh had some good possession. ..but they collapsed during this period. Two SH breakaways? Odd man rushes on the counter? Blowing shots all over the place? Fluery was flopping too much and paid for it twice. And right when Johnson got in, they nearly got pounded for goal #5.

Solid second period. I’m loving the performances by Elias and White so far. Keep it up Devils, 20 minutes to glory!

Martin

was awesome, for his first game back, there’s no doubt who our no 1. D man

and he can bring it up the ice and thru the neutral zone, maybe he can teach the rest of the D

and now Greene wont’ feel as much pressure, and probably will start lighting up or at least stepping it up offensively.

White and Sal did a good job, but Sal needs to cut down on the deflections, take a few tips from Dano and Stevens to be a better blocker

Mottau – good to see no mistakes, still needs to work on a more effective shot from the point, but like his confidence and poise lately

And Skoula doing a hell of a job, offensively and defensively, joined a few rushes and made some good passes and shots, great pick up, i remember him from the 2001 cup playoffs and thought he was good. like what i’m seeing

and two decent reserves, in Salmela – sure he will be chomping at the bit to play
Fraser – though i’ve been hard on him, he will be a good replacement for Sal or White

wish we had one more D man with an effective shot from the point, but martin will have to do for now, and see who else steps up

Great Game all around, will miss pelley when he gets the suspension, but zharkov can step in

Game over Devils win!!!

What can I say 6-0 versus the Penguins this year speaks for itself. Martin scores on his first game back. Shorthanded goal by Elias. Awesome goal by Zubrus. Strong game by Marty. It goes on and on. I am excited for this team right now. Hope their is not a letdown in Toronto but if there is it is too be expected after a victory like this..
