Join Fischer in the comments, I'm at work tonight.  Da' Rules: Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Leafs or Devils in general is OK.  Keep it clean and relevant at all times.  But please do not use this for other purposes and to talk about why The Hip never made it here.   Above all, go Devils!  Get outta' yer' own way.

Go...... Boston?

I hope Boston pulls a win tonight to keep the whiny Pens in place and keep the Rangers outside of the playoff picture.

Also wish I could flip to that game during the intermissions tonight. Any guesses as to whether Boston stays focused on the win or if the place becomes a war zone.

Both teams have had a few chances, but nothing too major.

1-0 Leafs

The rebound was perfectly placed for Kessel and there’s no way he was going to miss that.

That whole play was due to a TO in the neutral zone. Danis is playing well though. Kessel was right place right time for a wide open net.

Second period ends

Well, the Devils played with some fire; but they persevered, Danis made a brilliant save on the PK to maintain the 1-0 game at the time. From then, slowly but surely, the Devils started rising up. The first PP was poor, the second PP actually had a few shots on net, Zajac was robbed by Giguere’s toe, and then the Devils started getting a few more chances a little more often.

And then something clicked from Leblond to Clarkson in the slot. Brilliant pass, a sublime finish, it tied up the game, and now the Devils have more confidence in their strides. They couldn’t add to their lead but they’re starting to press a little more.

I figure he turned down buckets of money from Atlanta, so he’s probably so sick of losing that he might, might be willing to play elsewhere for a bit under the league maximum. It’s just a question of how big of a discount he’s willing to take to play for a winning team.

A POINT

The Devils really, really, REALLY should have scored on that last PP, Martin at the beginning, Parise at the end. I’m glad the PP actually came close to doing something – but really, they NEEDED to score there.

The PK will start in OT. At least it’s a point on the road, first one since March 2. Let’s kill this off and take the second one.

Bozak had a glorious chance on a rebound to score but he shanked it – just like Martin I suppose.

by Devil_Hard_Core on Mar 18, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s more than just that. It’s not starting off the game well. It’s being robbed on a few two-on-ones. It’s forcing a lot of shots into bodies (22 shots were blocked, 25 actually got on net). It’s not doing much in OT. It’s a bunch of things AND the power play.

Don’t get me wrong, Martin should have scored there; but the Devils could have played a lot better in the game and then wouldn’t have needed a late power play to succeed to win it.

It's a shame for Danis

He played as well as you could have asked. The shootout was his only downfall.

The Devils missed the chances they had and so have to settle for just one point. Sucks not because they had two glorious chances on that last power play; but because they did better in the third period and had nothing to show for it.

You cant actually

be happy with a point from the WORST team in the east… Can you? If we end up as 2nd or 4th seed in the playoffs we will lose even worse to good teams… So how ISN’T this bad?

by devils82 on Mar 18, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

But the Devils just beat the #2 team in the East for the sixth time this season?

Given how the game went, how the Devils played on the road, how the Devils played on a night right after playing and beating the Penguins, I can see why some would be happy with a point regardless of opposition.

I think you needed to read that part of my recap where I said that record means nothing on the ice. There are no door mats in the league.

What I’m saying is that you’re point is we beat the “#2” team so thats some kind of accomplishment? Well we are only one point behind them with a game at hand so are they really that much “better” than us… Also we had already beaten them 5 times… SO… Is one more win that much of an accomplishment?

by devils82 on Mar 18, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

1. Devils played last night…Toronto did not. Devils also had to travel after a very special night last night. It’s hard to match that emotion and intensity.

2. Danis is in (though he played well until the SO). So technically our best player is out in Marty.

3. Team’s PP once again struggled…

If this was a couple weeks ago, we would not have gotten 1 point.

Head up man…

I don’t even know if that’s allowed. Moreover, would you want to put a goalie in cold for a shootout?

We wouldnt be putting in a cold goalie, we’d be putting in a cold Martin Broduer… Theres a difference…. AND could a cold goalie be much worse than that?

by devils82 on Mar 18, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

well, technically, he could injure himself..

by richer44 on Mar 18, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Talk about jumping to conclusions

You all do know that this was Danis’ first shootout with the Devils, right?

Moreover, all this talk of how Danis needs to play more so Brodeur can rest means nothing if it means that in a shootout Brodeur has to come in and play anyway.

And if it’s going to be done for a shootout, why not for important penalty kills or other situations?

Either the backup plays the game (pulled if doing poorly, of course) or he doesn’t. That includes shootouts. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

His first shootout with the devils?

The shootout has nothing to do with the team in front of you its a goalie trying to make a save on a breakaway… So he should know hoe to do that…

by devils82 on Mar 18, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Why wouldn’t that be allowed? It’s a Goalie change. I believe a few teams did it last season.

by Matthew Ventolo on Mar 18, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Rules don't specifically say

But it is implied to be legal in rule 84.4:

Once the shootout begins, the goalkeeper cannot be replaced unless he is injured. No warm up shall be permitted for a substitute goalkeeper.

That tells me a substitution IS allowed before the shootout starts

Go Jets
Go Devils

by FrankG929 on Mar 18, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

OK. But again, why? Why would you put in a goalie who has done nothing but sit on the bench in just for a shootout? Doesn’t that completely defeat the purpose of resting a goalie?

I agree with you to a point...

I don’t think we will see Marty if this situation happens again. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we did.

It is putting in a cold goalie, and it is defeated the purpose of resting your goalie. But this is Marty Brodeur. He is the best keeper to have in SO situations. Also, is putting a goalie in for at least 3 shootouts and at most, maybe 6 or 7, really going to make him lose his rest? Marty is a freak when it comes to strength and conditioning, I don’t think facing a handful of shootouts will defeat the purpose fully.

What I would hate to see is a player like Danis, play a hell of a night to keep the score the way it was, then bench him b/c SOs aren’t his strongest asset. He deserves to finish the game, win or lose.

That’s why I am content with the 1 point tonight. Danis played well enough for this team to get 1 point. You can’t blame him for the other point.

No, man, didn’t you read the GameThread post at the top, he’s working. Why would I tell him anything tonight?

I think you need to take a deep breath here.

No one’s pleased with the loss, the Devils could have done better; but there are positives out of the game: One PP actually was effective at being threatening for a long time, if glaringly missed on great chances twice; Danis played as well as you could have expected; Leblond actually contributed something more than a punch to a dude’s face; and the Devils and the Leafs rode the ebb and flow of the game – with the Devils coming back in it late in the second after spending much of the game not putting shots in Giguere.

Oh, and it wasn’t a total loss like previous second halves of back to backs and recent road games; a point was earned. That’s all – looking at the positives.

Step away from the ledge.
