Game #62 - Devils at San Jose Sharks
New Jersey Devils at San Jose Sharks, Mar 2, 2010 10:30 PM EST
TV: MSG Plus (HD) in the metro area, while VERSUS (HD) is picking up the game nationally.
Radio: WFAN 660 AM
Previews: Check out Fischer's here, and enjoy Fear the Fin and Battle of California for Sharks coverage. And maybe we can trick fearless leader/Shark fan Mike Chen to hang.
NHL Center Ice Preview in effect: Yep. Check out this release from the NHL. If your digital provider is listed, then this is an excellent chance to check out NHL out-of-market games or Devils games if you're out of the local market from tonight through March 8. Great if you want to encourage people to check out the league, in my opinion.
Song to Get You Pumped Up But Also Make You Think Deeply About Tonight's Game: Blink-182's "Josie". Because that's how I always pronounce San Jose.
Join myself and Fischer in the comments. Da' Rules: all comments must be clean and relevant to the game. Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Sharks or Devils in general is OK. But please do not use this for other purposes and to talk about how that won't make you think deeply whatsoever. Above all, go Devils! I know that everything, know that everything, know that everything's gonna' be fine.

trade possible?
do you think the devils will make a trade before the deadline for a defenseman or anyone else? Anyone hearing any trade rumors about the devils or players linked to the devs??

I don’t think a trade will happen but you can never tell with Lou.

Andy Sutton to the Sens for a 2nd round pick….that seems like a pretty good deal for a veteran defender. I wonder why we didnt match that offer.
The Devils’ second rounder is likely going to be low and there’s no point to move the one picked up from Atlanta unless a more skilled player comes along?

Again, big thanks to Steve for taking care of recap duties.

Already, San Jose strikes first; Heatley’s shot led to a rebound, and Thornton hit the post on the rebound.

why does it look the non-olympians look tired?
it looks like the devils non-olympians look more tired than the olympians.
I think a big part of it is how good San Jose is. Good teams can make oppositions look terrible.

We need a breakout D
wow what a drop off from the olympics, maybe the nhl should get rid of a few teams, and concentrate the skill level.
Our D cannot make good breakouts, or be good in keeping the puck in or even getting off quality shots from the point.
Save Salmela, we don’t really have anybody else.
as for the forwards – Zajac plays like a wuss too much – kind of like Statsny in the olympics which i was not a big fan of, i felt for parise playing with him and langs (who is too slow anymore)
Well the Devils proposed a trade for Neidermeyer from the ducks but they said no deal.
by brodeurman89 on Mar 2, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions
what was the proposal
the problem is the ducks are close enough in the playoff race that they need niedermayer, plus that stupid GM says that nieds wil retire as a duck (that’s a slap to the devils organization and to niedermayer, who wants to retire as a duck – give me a break.
No details said
Darren Dreger just called to ask if Neids was available and they said no.

I’d like to say that the Devils have settled things down a bit after a hot start by San Jose.
But the fourth line just got pounded by SJ on a long shift.

our D
just tried to whip a puck up the boards for no reason, when it was two of our own with no sharks players near by, what’s going on?
and Boyle intercepted it. this is not acceptable. We need a stud D big time.
Usually, defensemen are taught to clear it up the boards if there’s no play that they can see. The clearance wasn’t hard enough so Boyle was able to pick it off.
I don’t think a stud D is going to help Salmela (I think it was him? Maybe Fraser?) clear pucks.

well
there was no one around them except themselves – they didn’t have to whip it around the boards
God it was fun watching niedermayer play in the olympics, all the subtle things he does to be great Defenseman and so offensively skilled
it’s a flat out tragedy he left the devils – i kind of hate rob and mother niedermayer for asking him to go help his brother win a cup.
Great chance by ZZ Pops, but Langenbrunner couldn’t pound it in up close.
Best shift by the Devils all game.

i'll say it again
zajac needs to grow a sack or something
he’s got some talent, but the mental game is not there and he just plays slow for some reason, maybe he was faster last year, but this year he just takes too long to execute anything most times, and then ends up passing rather than shooting.
Really? He had 20 goals and 185 shots last season, he’s got 19 goals with 150 now with 20 games left to play – he’ll meet his goals and shooting totals by the end of this season.
Yes, he missed this chance; but I don’t think it’s indicative of how he’s done this season.

numbers a
are nice
but it’s when they count, i’ve been watching this season, and my impression of him is that he’s a lumbering tall forward that has a shot if he can get it off, some stickhandling (occasionaly) but not enough speed and agility to get the job done.
plus his mental game is off, he doesn’t have the game sense, as soon as parise gives him the puck down low in this game he’s giving it right back with no one around him. Work with it, do something, it’s not a hot potato. that’s my frustration with him.
But the numbers state something entirely different from what you describe.

Sharks have taken a lot of sharp angle shots/passes from the corner. (I’ve been watching since about 9 minutes left)
by Matthew Ventolo on Mar 2, 2010 11:10 PM EST reply actions
I felt the Devils needed some waking up to do in the first period; but they’ve improved a bit since the start.
Brodeur was sharp early on some great chances; but the Devils have improved in not allowing the big shots on defense.
I am concerned about how San Jose is owning the board battles outside of whenever ZZ Pops is out there. I think Kovalchuk looks OK, Elias looks OK, but the team could exert more effort.
I’m going to stick around for the first few minutes of the second and then bounce to dreamland.

Underrated players on both goals
First goal: Kovalchuk’s rush up ice really made the initial shot happen
Second goal: Rolston with a great little screen on the shot. Fraser’s shot was great; but Rolston helped Nabokov not be able to get to it.

nice to see a good 2nd period and against the best team in the west, or at least one of them,
still need another D man on this team and we’re set. Clarkson has been great, glad to see someone back who can hit and play.
Yeah, but who knows what to expect from him? It shouldn’t be expected that he’s ready to go full tilt right out of the gate, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it took him weeks to begin to find his form.
Very true, but once he does start getting into his form and playing the way we all know hes capable of, I feel it’s the last missing piece for this team. Hopefully this comes right around playoff time, and we start rolling from there.

You gotta think there’s a lot of players trying to not give Lou an excuse to trade them… but I choose to think that’s only a minor factor.

i'm sorry
greene and salvador are not good enough if we want to contend
brodeur is not going to be like this all the time, and we shouldn’t expect him to
Salvador and White are in the same class – not good shooters, not good passers, just stay at home D – men
Greene and Mottau – have some offensive skill (Greene > Mottau) and make some nifty passes occasionaly, but they are undersized as D men. and get taken advantage of in their own zone
Fraser – is too young and i think will wilt under pressure in the playoffs, makes some bad plays, and not too confident of his overall play
Salmela – is a legit NHL D man who can pass, shoot, and defend.
We need Martin and another D man of caliber to complete the D corps
Enjoying how Kovalchuk is playing finally
Getting into space and making stuff happen. Seems a little more relaxed and letting the game come to him instead of forcing it like he was following the trade.
Kovalchuk Norris fact (crediting Steve)
Kovalchuk Norris can bring attendance to the Nets
We might need one of these in the preview for every game.

look at
my assessment of the D further up,
we need another puck moving D man, that can make good breakout passes, and won’t get flustered in his own zone (i.e. Greene, Mottau, and even Sal, sorry he looked bad on a couple of those goals as well)
i really thought brodeur would get a shutout, which would have been a great answer to the olympic performance
