Game #71 - New Jersey Devils vs. St. Louis Blues

St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils, Mar 20, 2010 7:00 PM EDT

TV: MSG Plus

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Check out Fischer's here, and may you never stray from the awesome St. Louis Game Time.

Springsteen Saturdays: Off of 1981's The River, here's "The Price You Pay".

You guys are somewhat on your own this evening, as I'm at the game in the $10 seats, and Fischer's going to be late arriving due to the opening of Red Bull Arena, which I still haven't figured out a way to get to from the PATH station in Harrison, even though it's about 100 yards away, but I digress.  Da' Rules:  Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Blues or Devils in general is OK.  Keep it clean and relevant at all times.  But please do not use this for other purposes and to talk about Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuce.   Above all, go Devils!  So let the games start, you better run you little wild heart

I hate to say this, but this game is incredibly boring.

To me, the Devils appear to have a slight edge. Which isn’t good enough down 1-0.

Well, the power play was at least threatening there. That’s progress?

Just started watching

So are the blues playing great defense? Or are we just playing crappy offense?

PP looked good there

but terrible bounces.

Is it just me or do the blues players just look faster than our players?

Okay explain to me how

Langenbrunner gets knocked into the goaltender and gets called for goalie interference and Brewer gets called for interference? How the hell do you call that?

Devils are doing better. Everything but the goal, thanks to Conks.

I’m just without words here.

Other than, will the people yelling “SHOOOOOOOT,” stop? There’s no shot when you yell it and when they do shoot it, you’re not happy at the results.

I’ve said it before, they play down to the level of their opponent. Not to mention making average goalies look great.

Nice, the Devils are definitely not out of there funk. You can’t play bad against bad teams. What a bunch of BS.

A quick summary while on the train

From the second and third periods that I was there to see:

Blues had good possession but didn’t play with urgency they could have used to make this game far easier on themselves. I didn’t think they played al that well until the end. Still, they needed the win and got it; I doubt many Blues fans would be unhappy with that.

Ty Conklin looked and played really well. Of all the Blues I saw, he was the best.

The Devils didn’t play poorly, I felt, unlike all their other shutout losses. They took a good variety of shots, their power play actually looked threatening which is progress of sorts, and they had a number of chances. What doomed them tonight was a combination of a good goalie and terrible finishing. Devils fans will recall this type of loss as being a common cause of problems from about 1996-2004.

The refs were awful. I normally don’t call out refs but that coinciding minor call was horrid.

In the big picture, Pittsburgh losing means this was a lost opportunity instead of a hurtful loss. Still a winnable game and that’s reason enough to be disappointed.

One last question

Who said the Blues are a bad team? If you think so, why?

I agree

It’s my 1st home loss of the year, a sad fact because I brought my entire extended household (fiancee, 2 roommates and significant others) – 2 of them have never been to a hockey game.

But the Devils didn’t play THAT badly. They peppered the Blues a’plenty, they just couldn’t hammer home rebounds. I give a ton of credit to their goalie and defense. St. Louis played really well tonight, I don’t think the Devils played that bad.

But the sad fact remains that Kovalchuk was supposed to be the guy that would break these close games open. I’ll comment on John’s previous post for my thoughts on Ilya.

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

Game over Devils lose tough one.

Another loss to the western conference. The Blues are a great road team so I cannot say that I am surprised. The goal by Saint Louis was questionable maybe could of been stopped but the offense did not score anyway. Lost to a team that was a little hungrier than we were tonight.

Aside from the myriad negative thoughts I have...

The positive has to come from off the ice: Another sellout, 11th of the season. Equals the number we had last year, and we’ll likely sell out Thursday, March 25th vs. NYR, Friday, April 2nd vs. Chicago, and April 10-11 against Buffalo and the Isles to end the year.

For a team with no fans, 15 sellouts would be something to write home about.

Also, championship plaza and the simple fan fests have 100% improved the atmosphere outside the arena.

But seriously… Why is Rollie on the 2nd line?
