The In Lou We Trust Trade Deadline Day Open Thread
Note: I did write this before the conclusion of the Devils-Sharks game. Do check out Steve's recap when it's up.
Anyway, today will be a busy day in the NHL as it's the season's trade deadline. Please use this post for all your thoughts and comments about today's trade activity throughout the league. Laugh at bad deals, worry about deals that make intra-division opponents stronger, and scratch your head over what future consideration could possibly mean. I'd like to thank user elesias for giving me the idea; but I can't update FanShots to be pushed up the page so this should suffice.
If there are any Devils-related trades, Steve will have something up during the day or I'll have a post on it in the evening. Remember that the Devils already made one big trade, acquiring Ilya Kovalchuk and Anssi Salmela from Atlanta for Niclas Bergfors, Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier, and a first round pick (second rounders were also swapped). I doubt they'll make a second massive trade, despite how bad the team looked before the Olympic break.
Last week, given Paul Martin's injury, most of the readers polled felt the Devils should go out and get a defenseman. I agree If there's a deal done, I would want it to be for a defenseman; but with Lou Lamoriello, you can never tell what he'll do. Normally, he makes a trade at the deadline but it's usually not a huge deal; like the Anssi Salmela for Niclas Havelid swap last season or Cam Janssen for Bryce Salvador. Given the blockbuster trade from February, I personally doubt he'll do much more than that if anything at all. Paul Martin may be all that this team needs, really.
Here are some resources that I recommend for trade deadline day:
- NHL.com has a constantly updated section for all trade and trade-related news. They also have "Tweetmixx," which compiles what's being reported directly from Twitter from a number of NHL insiders like Elliotte Friedman, Paul Kukla, and Darren Dreger. It's a good feature, one location where you can get the breaking news - which a feature of Twitter.
- TSN.ca, as usual, has their Trade Centre up and running. Already it's absolutely loaded with content.
- CapGeek is an excellent salary cap resource; vital for any trade analysis.
- Former SBN-Hockey manager Brandon Worley and James O'Brien are updating ProHockeyTalk (NBCSports' hockey blog) like mad with all the reports going out there.
- Puck Daddy will have a chatter box for all trade deadline coverage. Not a live blog, but an updated CoverItLive. Day 1 is an example of Tuesday's action, including links to other sites with coverage.
- Of course, SBNation has an entire hub to all posts on our network for trade news and analysis from our various team blogs. Perfect if you want an opinion on a trade for the Oilers from the perspective of an Oilers fan, like this one. You can access it through this link or the big button at the very bottom of this post to access it.
Again, please leave all your thoughts and feelings about today's trade deadline action in the comments. All rules apply as usual; please link to all reports out there (link to the Tweet, news story, etc.) and don't make things up in the comments. Especially on a day like today.

There’s a gnawing feeling in my gut that the Islanders will be a pretty darn good team next year.
They’ve got some high draft picks from recent years developing into solid players and an otherwise good core to build around; some consistency from an underrated coach in Gordon; and they’ve been very patiently trading/riding out dead weight. They’ve got a ton of cap room (can’t find the number right now, but I just saw it the other day and it’s enough to absorb some contracts from other teams looking to dump salary) and an excess of goalies, which are always in demand.
Doesn’t matter much right now, which is what matters (if that makes any sense), but in a big picture sense, keep an eye on the moves they make.
Yeah I can tell you the feeling is mutal. I have high doubts they will continue to be a bottom dwelling team much longer

Can’t see the Devils doing something huge, but I agree with the sentiment that they need another D-man, preferably a Top-4 type. Too many guys are playing too many minutes right now (hello Mike Mottau…. maybe even Andy Greene, who is solid but probably should not be playing 24 minutes a night), and I doubt this team can risk the possibility that Paul Martin has another setback and doesn’t return this year. I expressly heard Chico ruminate about Scott Niedermeyer last night on the broadcast, even going as far as to cite he supposedly “demanded a trade to a contender” from the Ducks’ locker room, but I honestly don’t see Anaheim selling him off at this point — they want into the playoffs, even as a #8 seed with another shot at the Sharks. I wouldn’t mind seeing Nieder back in our colors (I hate him a lot less ever since Gomez went to the Rangers, even pulled my autographed Niedermeyer jersey out of the back of the closet), but I think its a fantasy not likely to be reality come 3:00.
If you want to look at guys who are probably available…. how about Joe Corvo of the ‘Canes? He’s definitely available, he’s a UFA after the season, and he can play monster minutes in all situations. Heck, while we’re talking about Carolina, how about a little bit of a pipe dream here as well — wouldn’t it be neat if Lou could find a way to swindle Jussi Jokinen out of them as well? Nice complimentary scorer, terrific in shoot-outs (every point counts in the regular season!), and a Devils-killer to boot. Affordable as well, with a $1.7mil cap hit this season and next.
Does anybody know what we gave up?
If Andrew Peters ever plays again it will be too soon.

Handshake and a bag of pucks?
We’re picking up Pittsburgh’s rejects now?
I’m guessing Burke had moving Skoula in mind when he traded Ponikarovsky… wonder if there’s more to the story.
Maybe we can package Skoula with a prospect or a pick for a better D-man?

6th rounder?
If Andrew Peters ever plays again it will be too soon.

Ha!
From Brian Compton (whoever he is):
At this time last year, Sather gave Maloney 3 players for Derek Morris. Maloney just got Morris from Boston for a fourth-round pick.
I wonder if Boston isn’t clearing a little extra cap space for something else. There’s been rumors for a while that they might dump Timmy Thomas on Chicago…. and Chicago would be quite happy to dump some contracts given their salary cap mess. If Boston has extra room, they might pick up a few useful players in the bargain and shed a contract they regret now.
it is an OK move - he has to be better then Mottau

Did Skoula cross paths with Lemaire in Minnesota?
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
YES
TSN was just talking about that
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
Depth move, extra veteran D-man in case of injuries, nothing more. Skoula was a healthy scratch for most of January, and played very few minutes when he was in the lineup.
Didn’t see that it was already posted.

I hope we can get another player -- PLEASE MOVE PANDO
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions
I’m pretty sure Pando has the dreaded NTC
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
you tell him he either moves on -- or sits like he did last year when Shanny played over him
HE will want to leave
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions
Maybe not done...?
If we essentially only gave Toronto a sack of pucks for Skoula, maybe Lou isn’t quite done…
You never know with Lou until after the trade is done. LoL

could Eckford or another player in Lowell be moved
COULD BE
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM EST reply actions
Toronto did not even want him – so for a 5th rounder
Skoula is worth it
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions
Color me underwhelmed.
I’m not expecting a blockbuster trade or anything, but I don’t feel Skoula adds anything the team couldn’t have gotten from calling up a minor leaguer and keeping their pick.
I’m with you elesias. Especially since Phoenix was able to pick up Derek Morris, who seems like he would add more value than Skoula, for a 4th rounder.
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions
Comparing Skoula to a minor leaguer is a bit of a stretch. Skoula averaged 20 mins. a night in Minny under Lemaire.
minor leaguer? Derek Morris has been an established NHL-level player for several years.
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions
Morris was good for a few years – he has not been good for some time now
He is a 3rd pair at best
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:30 AM EST up reply actions
Perhaps, but he’s been a scratch on a Pittsburgh team with some questionable defense.
I don’t know if it’s not updated or what, but NHL.com doesn’t have him playing a single minute in the playoffs for Pittsburgh last year, and that’s pretty telling to me.
He doesn’t bring much in the ways of speed or offense… so I don’t see how we couldn’t get the same bang for (albeit not a lot) less buck.
He wasn’t with the Pens last year. He was signed as a free agent n September, and I don’t believe Minnesota made the playoffs last year.
If Andrew Peters ever plays again it will be too soon.
by LangsForPres on Mar 3, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions
well I agree bring up Eckford or play Corrente more
but in the playoffs – Devs would want a more seasoned player
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:26 AM EST reply actions
devils I believe are going for it this year
Marty is a few years away from (hopefully) working for the front office
Lets get one more cup and then finally all these reporters will be right – Devils are in rebuilding mode
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:29 AM EST reply actions
Devils have a lot of prospects with some great potential to go with youngsters like Martin, Greene, Parise, Zajac, Clarkson, et al. I don’t think Lou will have to resort to a rebuild for some time.
by Marty 4 Prez on Mar 3, 2010 11:31 AM EST up reply actions
Well the devils are to reshape that D group – hopefully the last draft class of D-men with Corrente and Eckford will help move the time faster
Replacing Marty could be hard – but then again there are very good goalies out there – many teams have 2 very good goalies
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 11:34 AM EST reply actions
I wonder what Boston gave up for him. I hope they paid a higher price than a 5th round pick…
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions
Meant to say — oh yes, much higher price — Seidenberg and another D named Matthew Bartowski in exchange for F Craig Weller, F Byron Bitz, and a 2nd round pick
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:38 AM EST up reply actions
seidenberg to Boston -
So Bruins are going for it -——- need to start playing better

Carolina sends Aaron Ward and his albatross contract to Anaheim for a pick (4th?) and G Justin Pogge.
I don’t particularly follow Anaheim, but why would they pick up an aging, under-achieving, overpaid Defenseman?
With any luck they want to get rid of an aging, over-achieving, adequately paid Defenseman?
by Marty 4 Prez on Mar 3, 2010 11:50 AM EST up reply actions
He’s UFA after this season, and his play has greatly turned around since November/December (I live in Raleigh and have a Hurricanes ticket plan, so I’ve seen him a lot this season) — I wonder if this and the Boynton acquisition are precursors to moving James Wisniewski…
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:50 AM EST up reply actions
Maybe they’re shoring up the D a little in anticipation of Scotty retiring? Ward is no replacement, but who is?
This really is a puzzling deal. They traded away one UFA defenseman in Boynton, and picked up another in Ward. If they were anticipating Scotty’s retirement, why would they trade for a guy who’s going to be on the open market this summer? Maybe they just wanted Ward more than they wanted Boynton.
by HockeyWeasel on Mar 3, 2010 11:59 AM EST up reply actions
With Atlanta signing Chelios
I think Lou should bring Scotty Stevens back for the remainder of the season!
Stevens could do it too, If he is shape of course. I’ll bet he could still compete at a high level.

I think Corrente has more upside then Eckford does and we still have Urbom in the minors.

2 hours left -—
hopefully Skoula is not the only deal Lou makes
but which young players would you be willing to trade?
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions
you would be willing to trade Eckford when Martin could leave this offseason
PL3 is willing to be moved
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
Greene, Salvador, and White are already under contract for next year; Fraser and Salmela are RFAs who would most likely cost less combined than Martin will; then there’s Corrente who could step into the 6th spot; and then there’s guys like Alex Urbom and Eric Gelinas coming up behind Corrente.
I really like Salmela - last year I liked him better then Johnny O
but he needed more time at Lowell with Stevens and Albelin
The way the Devils find players out of no where and turn them into good players is unreal -
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 1:22 PM EST up reply actions
would you be willing to trade Corrente – since we have Urbom and Gelinas (who I both like) can jump in and re-place Matt Corrente
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions
I agree with you on upside – because Corrente is more a true D-man
BUT he could bring the devils back more to this year run at a cup
I feel Urbom could step into that role
by Team First Devils on Mar 3, 2010 1:29 PM EST reply actions
Love the trade the Kings just made — big fan of Jeff Halpern
he is a very good 3rd 4th line player - I liked him when he was on the CAPS

1 hour left
Will Lou make another move. I can’t imagine him looking at his defense and being happy. I still think a top 4 man is needed.
Who?
The talent pool of players on the block is slimming.
Toskala headed to Calgary.
That should help fix their defensive woes. Hey, any chance Sutter feels guilty and throws the Devils a bone by having him in net on Friday?
Hope the Devils
make another trade for a defenseman. The trade for Skoula is too similar to the one for Havelid IMO. Is adding depth going to fix the issues they have been having in the top 4? Sure the return of Martin will help, but I don’t know if it will fix all the issues the team has been having. I also don’t know if the Devils have the players and draft picks to obtain a better defenseman.
Probably not going to happen. I wish that we would possibly package Skoula with a pick and send him somewhere else right now.
by CaramelCoveredXMas on Mar 3, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions
Strange move. It’s like the Caps broke up with him, but decided they couldn’t live without him and so traded back for him.
Skoula
Anything that bumps Mottau down to 3rd pair is alright with me. Plus, he adds some points from the blue line.
Seems to me they ignored their largest failing, the goaltender. These guys are all largely lateral moves with the possible upside of a little extra offense… not something the team had any particular need for.
I wouldn’t be sad in the least if they fell short again and are hamstrung for seasons to come. The day that ogre Ovechkin gets his name on a Cup is the day I… I don’t even know. I don’t even want to think about it. That would be the gravest hockey injustice I could possibly think of.
Corvo is definitely an upgrade over Pothier on the defensive side of the puck, and Walker will give them a little extra grit. But unless they don’t think Karl Alzner is ready for the playoffs, I don’t see what they gain by bringing Jurcina back. And Belanger just seems like a depth move in case something happens to one of their top 12.
I’m surprised at the Corvo deal. There was very little talk down here in Raleigh about him moving on. Picking up Osala should be a big win for the ’Canes.
What is it with the Ducks and Goalies?
Just picked up MacDonald from Toronto, just about a month after picking up Toskala from Toronto (and shipping him to Calgary today).

im surprised
the rangers haven’t made any significant moves. Probably because younger players tend to be the better ones, especially on defense. They probably can’t afford to trade away their younger players therefore, and no one wants their overpaid veterans
