That’s why trust is often fleeting – it’s hard.
Let’s see how this season plays out, though. I don’t think the Skoula trade will make/break anything this season, though.

Not really sure how I feel about today. I feel like this team is exactly the opposite of the cores that won those cups. Where as those were focused on specifically defense, this team is clearly one of the most offensively talented teams we probably have ever had – at least on paper. Going into the Olympic Break, I stressed the need for one more defensemen to properly round out this team. Skoula wasn’t who I had in mind.

Skoula wasn’t who I had in mind either, but we gave up practically nothing for him and I wouldn’t be comfortable with giving up any of the players it would have taken to get someone better.

Other than Scott Niedermayer, who would have been expensive to acquire, was there really anyone out there who would be better than a returning Paul Martin? It seems like the only D-men who would be at or above Martin’s level were included in trades that involved more than just draft picks, such as Seidenberg to Boston, Corvo to Washington, and Whitney to Edmonton.
Skoula’s a decent addition. Lemaire knows him well, and he’ll probably compete with Mottau for the #6 defenseman. The only concern is the lack of play Skoula has, as he didn’t play alot with Pittsburgh and was used sparingly (only when Pittsburgh didn’t have any of their defensemen available)

Mottau’s not the #6 on this team.
Maybe he should be, he plays like one at times, but he ain’t the #6.

well, let’s think about what Skoula gives us – a defense corps of Martin, Salvador, White, Greene, Salmela, Fraser, Skoula, and Mottau. That leaves a top two pairs of some combination of Martin/White/Greene/Salmela/Skoula – not exactly the Stevens/Nieds/Rafalski/White top 4 of yore, but the best that Lou could get this year without giving up Corrente, Eckford, Murphy, or any other prospects/roster players – and only for a 5th-rounder and a low cap hit.
I agree this isn’t the best defense the Devils have had – on paper – but frankly until Corrente/Eckford/Fraser/et al develop into the monster D-men we’d like them to be I doubt we’ll see a defense like that for a few seasons at least.
Honestly – I don’t love the Skoula deal, but it at least provides depth where there hasn’t been much this year. Besides, in a couple weeks, we get Paul Martin back – for free!
