Game #63 - Devils at Calgary Flames

New Jersey Devils at Calgary Flames, Mar 5, 2010 9:00 PM EST

TV: MSG Plus (HD)

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Here's Fischer's, and check out the awesomely named Matchsticks and Gasoline for Calgary news.

Brent Sutter still talks in a monotone, boring voice – that hasn’t changed.

These previews are underrated. Stevens hit on Kozlov in 1995; “Your Next,” and a Chico story about Sykora’s pet chinchilla.

I know he was out of it, but I always laugh when I see his chin strap riding under his nose when’s he skating off. Is that wrong?

I do too so it’s all good. I watch the Top 10 Hits all the time and that is still my favorite.

I like the way most of the top 10 are crawling. Connie’s crawl was quite impressive.

Just a quick mention

Great pick for a song. I think Sutter is a good coach but of course Lemaire is better.

Some good control, but no substantial offense from the third line.

So far, the game has been battle after battle with nothing really coming of it for either team on offense.

Makes the shots 3-2 in favor of Calgary. Not a whole lot of open play. This plays to the benefit of Calgary, since they really could use a goal since they haven’t scored one yet after the break.

For the record. Matt Loughlin and Sherry Ross are great broadcasters.

by Matthew Ventolo on Mar 5, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

First period over

Calgary’s hitting, hitting, and hitting some more. Honestly, they generated more with it early; but ultimately a bad pass out the corner by Bouwmeester was picked off by Greene; he throws it up, Zajac dumps it off, and Parise beats Kiprusoff to the left post. Since the goal, the Devils have looked better.

Zubrus and Rolston are looking good. Zubrus’ stick handling is great, set up a great chance for Elias that chance by making the Calgary D look like a pylon. Kiprusoff robbed Elias. That’s my memorable Z moment. Rolston’s giving a good effort in both ends, splitting two defenders to draw the first penalty of the game and denying Iginla a late one timer.

The Flames have certainly been riding momentum here. The crowd’s now into it and they’re not getting just shots on net but scoring chances.

I’m not sure what specifically the Devils have to do to turn it around, but actually getting those pucks over the blueline on clearances would be a nice start. That’s a third shift that the Flames had their offense extended due to a bad clearance.

Our Power play

needs to be more consistent and have more than 1 shot and out, it’s frustrating with that talent out there, although it seems the scouting report on us is to aggressively hound us, rather than be passive on the PK and it works, we don’t have good point presence unfortunately besides kovalchuk (sans the shorthanded goal tonight).

Also, can langs stop trying to pass 10 defensman (obvious exaggeration) – he knows better, just put shots on the net. Not a big fan of langs – a 3rd liner at best at this stage of his career.

by bdevil89 on Mar 5, 2010 10:24 PM EST reply actions

Health has been a major issue ALL SEASON. Again, let’s all wait until Martin gets back. The D will have good Depth then. The forward lines are finally healthy and should be steady for the rest of the season (minus scratches). Making coaching changes and benching a depleted Defense is not the answer. This team needs to play together again, get some chemistry going, and play Devils Hockey. 20 Games….

by Matthew Ventolo on Mar 5, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

maybe...

we’re just not as good as we thought we were beginning of the year? Marty, despite whatever excuses people wanna make for him, is not the same goalie, showed that in the olympics, last year in the playoffs, etc. He is more inconsistent now, and struggles in bunches when he does.

Our Defense really hasnt looked good since the end of December.
Our powerplay is abysmal. Etc. Etc.

I also can speak my mind when I feel someone’s comments require a rebuttal. As can you. This is America.

This team has flaws. No one is denying that. I just feel your solutions aren’t going to make this team better. Again, this team hasn’t played completely healthy all season. It’s almost a miracle that this team stands where they are right now. Give it some time. It’s a long season. Lou has made moves that he feels will make this team better (Kovalchuk, Skoula for depth). This team is still new to many players b/c of injuries and players leaving (Bergfors and Oduya). Give it time…

We’ve officially coughed up First in the Atlantic. Does anyone see us going on a tear, and overcoming the Pens, who have made 2 big moves at the deadline, and are defending champs? ehhhhhhhhhhh

by Drew95.00.03 on Mar 5, 2010 11:12 PM EST reply actions

Not entirely true. The Pens won yesterday and that alone put them in first. The Pens play one more game than the Devils this week, so even if the Devils won tonight – a Pens win tomorrow would put them in first.

Do you see anything about this team right now, that looks ANY different from the team we saw before the break. Its the same ol crap.

And one would hope that we should be able to beat the Oilers on Sunday

Id put money

That Edmonton beats us. Trap game. and with how we’re playing….i wouldnt be suprised to lose to the worst team in the league.

to tell the truth

I’d rather they not be seeded higher. Lowers expectations, raises the level of their competition, therefore they play better. Look at San Jose vs. tonight.

Good gravy, Fraser and Salmela to decide to have a boneheaded move in front of their own zone and Calgary nearly cashed in.

what's there to be scared about?

yeah, they’ve been playing poorly, yeah, the division race is tighter than it was in December, but honestly, I’m trying not to care.

The Devils have 19 games to get themselves settled down and WIN A PLAYOFF SERIES. Kovy and Elias will start potting some goals eventually – they’re too good not to. ZZPops is always solid. Clarkie is back for energy, Martin comes back in a week or two…

As much as I’d get an ulcer if it happened, I’d take a 5-6-7 seed at this point as long as we WIN A PLAYOFF SERIES. or two. or three. or four.

preferably four.

Calgary takes a penalty. Giordano will go off for holding.

Maybe we’ll see a consolation power play goal?

CONSOLATION POWER PLAY GOAL

Langenbrunner was stopped by Kiprusoff on a one-timer, very nice looking.

Only there’s a rebound and Parise puts it in.

I have a question

How the F__K can you score with 4, count ’em FOUR, players behind the Flames net?

Go Jets
Go Devils

by FrankG929 on Mar 5, 2010 11:31 PM EST reply actions

Flames win

Kovalchuk coughed up the puck – goal against
Greene coughed up the puck in his own zone and Salvador reacted too late to Nystrom cutting across – goal against
Salvador reacts slowly to a rebound as Stajan got to it first – goal against
Rebound pops up high defense is unaware, Flame gets to it on the flank – goal against

Notice a trend?

Also, the Devils took way too long to respond with much of anything against these goals. Score not indicative of how bad the Devils were.

There was one I think we can blame a little on the refs, Marty had his glove on the puck TWICE in one sequence. Every other goalie in the league gets a quick whistle there. Why not tonight?

Defensive breakdowns again

Starting to happen way to much this can not be a trend(seems like its getting there) something needs to happen. Blasted with 3 in the second and 2 within what 25 seconds in the 3rd this needs to stop

by NJDevilsSteve on Mar 5, 2010 11:37 PM EST reply actions

too late for something to happen

That was Thursday. They’re going to have to find a way to make it work with what they have. I posted it in another thread, Martin’s not as ready to come back as we all hope he is. Lou had said after the Skoula trade that it was (I forget the exact words) very unlikely Martin would be back next week.

I suspect at least 2 more weeks without Martin.

The first period was great. The rest of the game until the last five minutes was an absolute train wreck. Each goal against more demoralizing than the next. It is simply incredible to me that the Devils have the lowest goals against in the league right now. I sincerely hope that the return of Martin has the type of impact we all expect.

RECAP IS UP

The funny thing about the lowest goals against average per game is that it further highlights how bad the team is playing now. The Devils weren’t making as many big defensive errors earlier in the season despite it largely being the same players. Hence, the additional concern, in my opinion.
