Do we need a goalie change??

Is it just me or does Marty need to sit down?  He was sent to the bench during the olympics and team Canada rebounded and won the gold. We can blame the Devils defense all we want but there was a different defense in front of him in the olympics same result. Yann Danis is sitting on the bench rotting with a goals against of under 2. Every time I listen to other analysts on the Nhl Network and commentators on versus or nhl.com they all say Marty is the reason for the losses. Now as Devil fans we all love Marty and respect his past accomplishments but the bottom line is he cannot seem to play a game without letting up at least 3 goals a game lately. If he does that in the playoffs its one and out. Why not sit him down a couple of games and let the backup play a while to see if he can do better? That may show Marty that he is not guaranteed the starting position and that may lift his game. We have 19 games left to right the ship a lower playoff seed will really not hurt all that much. What do you honestly think? ANSWER HOW YOU TRULY FEEL not what we do not want to admit..

It's not that he's not guaranteed the starting position

But giving him a day off every once in a while isn’t a bad thing. The Devils go into the season every year saying Marty won’t play 70+ games. Well this came true last season, obviously not for a good reason, it’s not happening this season. Sure he’s in good shape. Sure he’s still one of the best goalies in the league. Guess what? All the rest of them get a day off once in a while. Just because he says he’s not tired and he wants to play, that doesn’t mean he’s at his best. Yann should play against the weaker teams like most of the rest of the backups in the league. I would be quite annoyed if Brodeur’s playing in Edmonton tomorrow night.

I hear similar commentaries about Marty, not so much him losing games for them as much as that he’s letting in too many soft goals-even his longtime teamate Ken Danyeko wrote in a yahoo column before the olympics he was allowing in soft goals as of late, but I think he was understandably being generous as I have noticed he’s been letting them in for a while now. The thing that strikes me most about his game and it may be my imagination is that he seems more emotional and less focused on the ice. When play is in the other end and the camara sometimes focuses on him he kind of just stands there looking boored as opposed to be waiting alertly in the crouch position as he used to do, because in this league it’s microseconds for play to switch sides.

First, Yann Danis has a low GAA because he has only played 4 games…
I agree, but I also think he is close to retirement. I have been following Jeff Frazee and I think that Lou should bring him to the NHL. Marty has been great and we will always be thankful for him, but he’s almost done.

Yep, almost 29 IS close to retirement. Frazee won’t benefit being backup and never playing.

Did you read his post?

he said that Marty is close to retirement… and he said that Frazee should be brought up to play to see if he could right the ship…

Agreed!

Marty needs to build some confidence again (as does the whole team). I feel benching him would not do the trick. For other players, making them sit due to a coaches decision sparks them next time they hit the ice. Goalies are different. They are more sensitive I guess. Marty has been through a lot the last couple weeks, and some firsts for him too. He was already officially benched for Canada for a younger goalie (and one can argue, a better one) during the Olympics. There was more pressure on him because he was the goalie in 2002, on top of the obvious pressure the team had. This was his last bout for the Olympics, and to him, he failed. He doesn’t feel apart of this gold medal, and it is definitely getting to him. He was anxious to getting back and playing for the Devils. Let some time pass as Olympic talk starts to die down (which it pretty much has already sadly, bit that’s a separate issue).

Marty is the starter. He does need to play sharper. The whole team needs to play sharper. All aspects of the game need to improve. Thos team builds on momentum and excels when all the players are on top of their game. November and December are great examples. Marty had shutouts, PP and PK were good, all the lines were scoring. Once the PP started to bleed out, everything else did.

I think once one aspect starts playing well, the dominoes will fall (or rise…whatever). Time will tell. 19 Games are plenty to get back on track. I would like to see Danis play 3-4 games though (the 2 games in 2 days).

Remember: this isn’t Vesa Toskala or Dan Cloutier. This is possibly the greatest goalie of all time. He at least deserves to play, not get thrown under the bus. The team hasn’t been playing exactly the best hockey, so it’s not his fault. I hope that he’d be able to get back to form against the oilers

He does deserve to play ,he is the number one goalie and he is not to blame solely for this teams inconsistant play, but so to does Y. Dannis deserve to play more than just 4 games in a near 80 game schedule- if Marty was standing on his head all year I’d still be complaining that we aren’t playing more (Dannis) himself for the reason that he can feel part of this team and more importantly that he would have the confidence to back up Marty should he get hurt in the playoffs. this is just sound strategy, there was no reason when we had the best record not in our division but in the whole league he couldn’t have played more. The way we were playing at that time he would not have been a detriment. If you don’t use your backup goalie once in a while while a team is winning and you don’t use them when a team is slumping then when do you use them?

that is a good point.

What happens if Brodeur gets hurt especially in the playoffs. A rusty goalie having to take over in a spot like that is not a good thing.

You would think Lemaire would play

Danis against the Oilers, but I guess he sees them beating Danis. But maybe this is a good thing. Marty is slumping now maybe he won’t in the playoffs.

I think so

Honestly, does Marty make a huge save one time or another? Of course. Yet, it’s about that time.

Let’s not forget the last two playoff runs. Rangers dominated Brodeur two years ago and last year? Well, I think we all know what to think (still bitter). He’s not the same as he used to be. When you play with no real style and move the way Brodeur likes to, you need to be agile and extremely quick. He’s not as fast as he used to be so when he goes down to make a save, you know he’s not getting back into position as quick. There is a lot of talent out there, not to mention Frazee (we all have to think that Lou is already contemplating this idea of moving him up at some point).

Let’s not forget Clemmensen last year and what he brought when Marty was out How would we have done with him in net for the playoffs?
