The Modell’s in Kearny is selling Red/Green jerseys for $135, and with every purchase you get 2 tix to Devils/Boston.

Do you know if they sell them at the NHL store in NYC?

How is the NHL store in NYC? Do they carry things from all teams or just the original six and the Penguins?

hahha Penguins…but they carry every team, it’s pretty nice, plus they customize jerseys in like 45 mins. I just called and they do sell red/green jerseys!

I think they do, but much more expensive than the Elias jersey I bought today.

Missing Oduya

Has anyone (like me) begun to rethinking the Kovy trade, not in terms of whether it was a good move (because I still like the move), but in terms of what we gave up? I was with a lot of people in thinking we really did well in what we gave up. I am not saying I would not have done the deal, but Oduya’s skills, though admitting he wasnt play as well as he is capable of, are ones the devils are sorely missing right now. Anyone have any thoughts in this regard, espesially coming into tonights game having had troubles defensively? Frankly, I wanted and still want to believe the Devils with Kovalchuk are legit Cup contenders, but (even assuming a healthy Paul Martin down the road) this is one of the least talented and prone to errors defensive squads out there for a Cup contender. Which one of our defenders are you confident holding the puck at the blue line, which one are you confident bring the puck up ice with speed, etc? Oduya at least brought those features in a defenseman and though his play wasnt superb when we traded him I can see spots and plays and shifts during a game where we miss him.

by max16s on Mar 7, 2010 6:21 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know. Oduya was struggling when he did play this season; he would go through games where he definitely didn’t break out of the zone well and handle the puck at the point. There was a reason why Lemaire generally played Mottau ahead of Oduya.

There is no doubt you are correct that Oduya was not play well or nearly up to his potential; come guys do this the first year after a big contract signing and its more mental than anything. On the other hand, I dont think anyone will challenge the argument that Oduya is a far more talented hockey player than Mottau and that assuming Oduya is playing well there is no question he would have been very valuable down the stretch. I think the fact remains that Martin aside (and assuming Martin to be healthy) there is no defenseman on the Devils that so much as approaches Oduya’s skating and skill level/potential. Lou had to give something to get something, and that something he had to give (in terms of this year and this team) was Oduya, not Bergfors. Having said that I’d still make the trade, but even with Martin, I dont see defensive skill on this team for a deep run. Almost all teams that make a good run have at least a pair of highly skilled defensman.

by max16s on Mar 7, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

If you ask me Oduya was put in the trade to clear cap space.

by NJDOhio on Mar 7, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that that was a motivation for Lou. But that only means something if we resign Kovy. And also we have to face the fact that we ZERO skilled defenseman on this team. I am not even talking about a Rob Niedermayer. Im talking about a defenseman with above average skating and puck handling abilities. We dont have one.

by max16s on Mar 7, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

If Martin was healthy and 100% it would be better. But your right we really dont have a stud defensman offensivly.

With Kovy here, I think its our only real weakness.

by NJDOhio on Mar 7, 2010 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

Agree, although I would say its not just that we dont have a stud. We dont even (in my view) have an above average defenseman on the team at the moment.

by max16s on Mar 7, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you to a certain extent, Max16, and I disagree with you as well. I think you’re kind of defeating your argument a little bit when you say we miss Oduya right now because no defensemen on the team matches his skating/skill level, but then you would still make the trade. I think thats a bit of a conflicting statement. There is no doubt that our defensive core this year isn’t nearly as strong as it has been in past seasons. However, Johnny Oduya was getting overpaid ($3,000,000 per year) for the talent that he was bringing to the table on a nightly basis this year. Thus, although I think Johnny played really well last year, I think he was inconsistent at best this year and not worth the money. I would instantly pull the trigger again on this deal if I had a chance to go back in time and rethink it. Its gamble but at the same time, we gave up comparably little for the arguably the best offensive weapon in the NHL.

I do agree though that we have a bit of a gap in the defensive core. I think it relies on Martin to come back as strong as we know he’s capable of. There is no doubt that the strength and focus of this team has shifted from defense to offense. We’ll see if things work out.

"We aim above the mark to hit the mark." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

by Tim G on Mar 7, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

I can understand how you see a contradiction Tim. I explain that simply by saying we had to give something to get something. Before Kovy we were a one line offensive team and, I think, out in one round in the playoffs. Now I think we have some offense, but the defense on this team is just underwhelming, is totally non-skilled. There is no D man on the team right now that has above average skating skills.

by max16s on Mar 7, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

it would be great to sign Kovalchuk, but even if we don’t we cleared Oduyas contract off the books also. Parise has a big pay dy coming, and trading Oduya means we MUST sign Martin.

Third Line

One more thing to put out there: Cangilosi and Chico were mentioning the other night that with Clarkson back, out third line may also be able to produce some goals. I agree, but does anyone else feel like me that Niedermayer should be moved down with Pando on the fourth line considering his strong defensive skills, and that either McCammond or Zharkov should move up to the third line to give it some more speed up ice, etc. I like (as I think chico mentioned as well) have been impressed with Zharkov though he hasnt scored, he may benefit from more ice time and bring a bit more jump to the third line. The fourth linke of Pando and Niedermayer would then in my view exclusively a shut down line. Any thoughts?

by max16s on Mar 7, 2010 7:13 PM EST reply actions

I agree about giving more ice time to Zharkov, and Pando has been iffy lately. A line with him and Niedermayer would defiantly be something to consider

by Josh Weinstein on Mar 7, 2010 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I think we need to make the third line something players not in on the first two lines compete for. Frankly, I like Zharkov’s work ethic and skating ability, putting him with Clarkson on the third line may be a good idea. Now what about Brian Rolston? His going to be a mainstay on the third line ever though he has had such poor production?

Important play by Elias to tie up Brule from taking that shot there.

Too bad the Devils eventually iced it.

The Devils have done well going forward in the neutral zone, but once they get into Edmonton’s zone, it just gets sloppy. Good defending by the Oilers; but seriously, Devils, show some patience on offense. You’re not getting anything done by rushing and forcing passes.

Wanted: Defenseman who can get the puck on net

After watching the Olympics, did it make you remember how much we miss Rafalski? He never took the big slapshot, but had one of the best snapshots meant to be tipped in all of hockey. The Devils’ D men keep missing the net. When you miss, sometimes it becomes a clearing for the other team, but most of the time, it rarely allows for rebounds. Parise thrives on rebounds. . . . we need more pucks on goal.

Second period over

The Devils have been fine moving the puck through the neutral zone but terrible when it’s in the Oilers’ end. Forcing passes and shots that are stopped by the Oilers, who then counter attack. This leaves the defense with issues and when they make mistakes – like Salvador’s big giveaway – it’s no wonder that the Oilers got 16 shots on net.

Brodeur’s been solid. Skoula has been good. But overall, this is not good for the Devils.

It’s only 1-0. Will they make a game of it?

I think we make a game of it and win in the third. But offensively there is still not enough balance. The third line is dead. Rolston and Neidermayer are simply not producing.

I cant blame Lou. I think its as simple as the fact that none of our young D are really there yet. Most teams that win a Cup have a young player that fills a hole on a team they werent expected to fill and for very cheap hit on the cap. We really dont have a young player like that.

How do you explain

How we dominated beginning of the year, and now we look, honestly, like the worst team int he league.

good point. but id like to see a stat on how many of the devs win in the first part of the year were by more than one goal. Not many. we win a LOT of one goals games which was our problem last year. when ur winning one goal games ur not dominating.

7:41 left. Will we see a goal by the Devils?

Whatever you say about the Devils...

The Oilers really revved up the Delauriers tonight. Thanks, I’ll be here all week.

Anybody going to the retro jersey game, used to be really excited, now the only thing that is bringing them is the retro jerseys?

The most retro jersey I have is my home white. Will be wearing it in 118

Kovalchuk seems to be the only Devil who has had dangerous shots – not jams in front – in the slot. Deslauriers made a tough save there.

So Disappointing to this point.

Marty gave them a chance to beat a team that they absolutely, 100% should beat. The Oilers thought they were getting one of hockey’s elite teams and stepped up. The Devils… I just don’t know.

Can’t win if you don’t score. Doesn’t matter what the goalie does.

On a positive note...

This red and green jersey looks and feels super comfortable. Definitely recommended.

Penalty on clarkson holding its over

Clarkson called for holding in the offensive zone. No one has brought this up but he was a non-factor tonight.

He hasn’t been able to be much of an offensive threat since he came back. Not that he’s a dynamo, but he always was at least a wild card in the offensive zone.

yeah

he has done almost nothing. He hustled a lot though. Wish he would have hit someone since peters doesn’t know how to

Say Hello

To 3rd place finish in the Atlantic. Philly is playing VERY well. and will catch up to us. We’ll be lucky as a 7 or 8 seed.

by Drew95.00.03 on Mar 7, 2010 10:23 PM EST reply actions

We may be playing awful

But Philadelphia is not passing us with Michael Leighton in net. Not happening. You can be as negative as you want, but were not getting passed by Michael Leighton.
