Signing Plekanec in July....
One of the key free agents this uppcoming year is Tomas Plekanec. He's a great center that could play with Kovalchuk and Elias next year pending Kovy signs on. But in order to sign him we will have to lose a key player....
And that key player would be Paul Martin. His contract expires this year and is getting paid about 3.8 million. Tomas is getting about 2.7 million. Well starting off with the Devils trade with Kovalchuk the Devils had 6 million in cap space we lost 4 million in Oduya which means we have 10 million in cap now. The Devils have 5 deph players with contracts expired not including Kovalchuk and Clarkson. A combined 3.7 million if we don't sign Mottau, Skoula, Mcammond, Murphy, Pikks, and Nieder. Combine 3.7 million with 3.8 million you got 7.5 million. Add 10 million to that and you have a whopping 17.5 million dollars! Pending you sign Clarkson and Kovalchuk it would go down by 8 or 9 million. So we have money to sign Martin and Plekanec. Sign Martin to 4 million and offer Plek 4 million. That would use up 8 million and we will still have money left over. About 1.5 million. If you offer Plekanec 4 million and a chance to play with either Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner or Kovalchuk and Elias he'll take it in a second. And also a chance to play with the best Goalie in the NHL and a chance to win the cup. Its a lot of math but it is possible to sign Plekanec, Martin, Kovy, and Clarkie. How good would that team look? Hopefully it is not a dream!

We can't afford
to lose a top defenseman. The last few weeks have pretty much proven that. If getting Plekanec costs Martin, I say no way.
Go Jets
Go Devils
agreed
but ur post doesnt make sense. do we have to lose martin?
Why would he sign with Atlanta?
When he has a chance to win the cup this year? Atlanta needs about 2 or 3 years. And I said the Devils would lose Martin if the cap was to low. Doing all the math made me realize that we could sign him too.

I hope I’m wrong and that Lou will bargain this guy (Kovy) down and will keep him here at an affordable price. However, if he leaves, this might provide the cap space to bring in Plekanec. Either Kovy or Martin will have to go though in order for Lou to make a deal for Plek because Lou will not box himself in with the salary cap.
Why would he resign with Atlanta? Sorry for the sarcasm, but was it really far off? They (Atlanta) are being rebuilt. They have plenty of Russians to keep him company. Lastly they would give him Anything he wants. League max salary if necessary. Maybe he won’t win a cup in Atlanta, but it’s not looking like a cup year for him in NJ either right now. Actually looking like a 1 and done playoff series. Again, I hope I’m wrong. I pray I’m wrong because I love this damn team.
someone call 911 for our power play

Atlanta apparently offered Kovalchuk $10 mil/year and he said no. At least, that’s what the management claimed.
Honestly, I get a sense that Kovalchuk wanted out of a bad situation. With the trade, he got that. If he doesn’t re-sign here, then I’d be shocked if he would even listen to Atlanta.
But that’s a June problem. Right now, I think we should be more concerned with March problems.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
