Game #82 - Devils vs. Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo Sabres at New Jersey Devils, Apr 11, 2010 5:00 PM EDT
The Time: 5 PM EDT/4 PM PDT -- TV: MSG Plus (HD) -- Radio: 660 AM WFAN
The Previews: Here's my preview from earlier this morning; check out Die By the Blade for Sabres-based opinions.
A Song to Pump You Up: You know, Fischer thinks this song rules so he's running with it again: "Ironbound" by Overkill. (Steve's Note: Get it, because he's using it a lot!)
Other Games of Note: In terms of potential playoff opponents, the only game that matters is the Philadelphia Flyers playing the New York Rangers. A Devils win means this game matters little to any of us, but a 1-point game and if the Rangers win, we get Montreal and if the Flyers win, we get the Flyers. So there you go. Feel free to discuss the game here.
This Is A Charitable GameThread: For each comment posted on this GameThread, I will be contributing an additional $0.15 to TEAMJLO, an ovarian cancer education and fund raising group. So far, $48.30 has been raised. Let's up this amount today.
The organization was set up by the Lopez family in honor of their mother and friend, Janice Lopez - the aforementioned JLO - who was struck by ovarian cancer several years ago. While Janice Lopez is no longer with us, the fight against ovarian cancer continues. They've been working together with the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation since 2005 as well as the Kaleidoscope of Hope (link goes to NJ affiliate).
Special Rules for the Charitable GameThread: First, please no images in the comments, that will just slow down the GameThread. Second, please don't spam the GameThread with pointless comments. There's 7 other games going on today - including this one. Surely, you can say something about the Devils, Sabers, this game, or some other NHL game (e.g. Rangers-Flyers). Let's do some more good today, let's not do it by being a pain to others.
Standard Ending Message: As always, please keep the comments clean, relevant to some hockey game, and civil. Go Devils!

Agreed
But, as I said before, a Rags win means they get crushed by Washington (knock on wood of course). And the Devils receive more favorable opponents despite if they win or not.
Plus, they would beat the Flyers and ruin playoff hopes for them. So it’s not all bad =]

For the people in the PDT, the game would start at 2 not 4

You know what I just noticed...
Another year, critics peg the Devils for mediocrity. This year’s criticism seemed even worst. Yet, once again, our Devils have won an Atlantic Division Title despite having gone though a PUTRID stretch of games for a good month and a half (Makes me wonder where they would be if they kept at even a 60/40 through that).
It’s really telling of how lucky we are to be fans of such a great team.
Tomorrow’s post is going to be fun to write. Even my own prediction was surpassed!

If the Devils sellout today (which they will)
They would have sellouts in 9 out of the past 12 games, and an average of 17105 in that span. I feel it’s only a matter of time we start seeing The Rock at full capacity for a majority of the season.

Indeed. As it is, this season hit a new high for sellouts, a trend I’m sure the organization will trumpet.

It’s a fantastic thing you’re doing John and Co.
My question for the Devils masses: any worries about the Bruins if that were to be the matchup? Or perhaps this would be a more sophisticated way of asking the same thing: would you rather see the Habs or the Bruins?

As long as it’s not the Flyers, I don’t really care. But probably Montreal only because Marty plays his best in his home town, which would be a plus.

Anyone but the Flyers. The Habs are much beatable just because Marty owns the Habs. The Bruins i wouldn’t mind, but if the offense doesn’t show up, the Bruins could pull off an upset

Thanks for all the timely updates, fellas. Trying to follow the game in here while watching the Masters.
The Western Matchups are Set:
Colorado vs. San Jose
Nashville vs. Chicago
Los Angeles vs. Vancouver
Detroit vs. Phoenix
Not exactly any ideal match-ups for big ratings. Maybe they will show more games in the East as a result.
Detroit-Phoenix could see NBC. There's some potential in that and Avs-Sharks
by Steve Lepore on Apr 11, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Agree
Detroit-Phoenix should be a great series from both a gameplay standpoint and a marketing standpoint. I can’t see Colorado getting past San Jose unless the Sharks do their patented playoff dive.

Pens vs Sens will be a big card for the 1st round. The best Canadian team in the east vs the most popular in the east

I live in Erie, PA which is considered Pittsburgh and Buffalo TV market. NHL Network just blacked out the shootout on me because the program guide switched to the Pens game and won’t be shown here in Erie. Epic Fail. Why bother paying for Center Ice when I can’t watch the most important shootout in the history of the NHL.

Speaking of Kovy
How have you guys liked him on the Devils? The biggest debate in Buffalo was that he couldn’t play well enough in his own zone to be a good enough player in the playoffs.
He’s a team player. Contributes on both sides and does it well. He tends to have a turnover on the PP every now and then and his board play is his weakest attribute. Overall, he’s been very good
by Matthew Ventolo on Apr 11, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions
So basically
Everything that was said about him would have been wrong. I know we had a lot of people that didn’t want him on the Sabres cause he “wouldn’t fit the system”. But by what you guys are saying he’d fit in perfectly with us.
Yeah, I mean I’m pretty sure a bunch of us thought he would have a hard time fitting into NJs system as well because its so completely different than Atlantas. It took him a bit of time to adjust, but he has played simply excellent hockey. He backchecks well, is as fast of a skater as any on the ice, and passes as good as anyone.

I think Buffalo turns over the puck often enough for the Bruins to get a few scoring chances. I also feel the Bruins can out-physical a team like Buffalo, and take them out of a game early. The Bruins have enough goaltending to stop the Buffalo attack. Plus, I’m scared to death of Brouduer :)

That's one of the reasons why...
…I wanted to see Atlanta in the playoffs over the Rangers or Flyers, besides the fact that having both the Rangers and Flyers out of the playoffs is good for the game as a whole.

Goodness you people need to take some vicodin
But you should want the team to win every game. Especially against a good playoff team/a division winner (a division with 4 teams in the playoffs)/ and a potential 2nd round match up (for home ice nonetheless).
Wanting them to lose because you are afraid of the Flyers..you’re pretty much askeing them to lose/throw the game/get beat/not win.

we beat boston in four----flyers take us deep----loose the game
its now cowardly to recognize the that a team (philly) matches up well against you given they beat you five of six times this season. its called rationality
right. and asking a coach to put in the backup goaltender, fourth line, and 3rd defensive pairing for the entire third period is perfectly rational.
hey you ever watch the NFL
well..they do this thing called rest starters, and pull QBs
do you ever watch the NHL?
they have this thing called 20-man rosters. Resting starters for an entire period without killing the depth players is out of the question. If JL wanted to rest his guys he’d have called up players from Lowell.
Not to mention that NFL teams only rest starters/QBs when the game is meaningless. This game decides home ice in the second round.

Ever watch the NFL? A team locks up a playoff spot, and to benefit the team, and preent injuries, they pull starters and QBs.
Guess they are cowardly as well. Ridiculous….you people are blind
none of these players should even be skating right now. its unexplainable why danis wouldnt not get work today and why we would still be playing our top players at this point risking injury when a loss well clearly give us a better match up.

question for Sabres fans
pretty much since the Olympic break the talking heads have really only talked about three ‘elite’ teams in the east – Caps, Pens, Devs, in that order. Any sense of a ‘nobody believes in us!’ -type mentality in Buffalo? I mean, you clinched your division, have probably the favorite for the Vezina this year, and at least a shot at the #2 seed in the East. Any chips on shoulders up there?

its NOT cowardly to REST your best players the last game of the season and get your backup his first work in TWO weeks. and its rational, not cowardly, to recognize a team matches up well against you and has beaten you 5 times this year. that would be called dealing with reality.
agreed
people like talking out of their anuses and calling people cowards because they see the bigger picture
Once again Drew
It isn’t the same Flyer team. Boucher will be in goal. Devils were 1-1 against him. I’ll take those odds over last year’s Vezina winner and another goalie who’s been playing like crazy.

Sure – as I’ve said before, you’re matching up the worst offense in the league with the best goaltender in the league. I understand Rask has been playing well – and that certainly is scary, but I have a million times more faith in Miller (who is 2-0-2 against the Bruins) than Rask. I also don’t want to risk injury against a bigger Philly team that likes to throw its weight around. Lastly, I’d like to have home ice in the second round if we do make it there.

At least all the arguing had some sort of purpose. Funny it was all between Devils fans and not between Sabres and Devils fans combined. It was great to have posts from both sides.

Devils win the Jennings
for the 5th time (tied for most all time with Montreal).
The trophy started in the 81-82 season

Thanks to the commenters. I’d like to thank Zach of Die by the Blade as well as the other non-Devils fans here for their 15 cent comments .
This will be up until I get home and do the recap. So you all got another hour or so to add more thoughts.
