New Jersey Devils Keep Momentum Going, Earn 2nd in East with 2-1 Win over Buffalo Sabres

NEWARK, NJ - APRIL 11: Brian Rolston #12 of the New Jersey Devils celebrates victory with team mates after defeating the Buffalo Sabres at the Prudential Center on April 11, 2010 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

In my preview for this game, here was the goal I felt the New Jersey Devils needed to strive for:

Put out a good performance.  The Devils already clinched the Atlantic Division so they'll either finish second or third in the Eastern Conference.  Since the Devils don't absolutely, positively have to win this game, I just want to see a solid performance by the Devils.  Nothing too crazy, no injuries, and nothing that would cause anyone too much concern going into the postseason.   It's not about the result, it's about keeping momentum - that's what I think is the most crucial aspect to look for in the big picture.

I suppose I can't complain too loudly.  I got exactly that.  The New Jersey Devils' 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres was an weird game to witness.  Weird because both teams changed their lines in-game to varying levels of success. Weird because a regulation win by New Jersey would and did grant them a first round playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers.  I certainly felt a bit conflicted during the second and third periods.

Weird, I felt the two teams canceled each other out in terms of taking initiative. Despite the big difference in shot totals, I didn't think New Jersey soundly outplayed Buffalo - I think it was more of a consequence of the Devils' defense not being nearly as much as the Sabres' did. All the same, that the game was tied for most of the game was fitting.

Almost fittingly, the game was won in the final seconds of the third with an empty net power play goal. The game was 1-1, and the Sabres stupidly took two calls near the end of the game.  Granted, the game going into extra time doesn't help them - that would lock up the #2 spot for New Jersey.  So I understood why they took a huge risk at the end from a standings standpoint.  Still, the Sabres pulled Patrick Lalime during a penalty kill and conceded possession at the blueline - leading to an easy goal for Jamie Langenbrunner.  I've never seen anything like that before.  A weird ending all the same if only for how rare this happens in a game.

Still, the Devils put out a good performance on both sides of the puck, Martin Brodeur had another solid game, and the Devils forced Lalime to be great - and he was.   Among other arguments you can make about the Devils, you can't say they ended the season poorly.

Today's GameThread continued to raise funds for TEAMJLO. A big thanks goes to Zachary Zielonka and the Die by the Blade community for taking part in the GameThread here.  With all of the activity, 874 comments were made - resulting in $131.10 raised.  Adding $5 the Associate gave to me at today's game (Thanks) as well as the $48.30 raised from Saturday's game, that's a total of $184.40.   Not bad on a weekend of two Devils home games.  The donation has been made; I thank you all.

I have some additional commentary on tonight's game after the jump.  Do go over to Die by the Blade for Sabres-based opinions about tonight's game. Here's David Oleksy's recap.  As always, for links to all of the stats, please check out the recap at NHL.com.

Star-divide

First, here is the highlights video of today's game from NHL.com.

Notice that there were 9 for Patrick Lalime's saves alone.  Lalime played great tonight and it was a shame that the Sabres didn't give him a whole lot of support.   While the Devils didn't control the game or were vastly superior than Buffalo with respect to puck movement, the Buffalo defense allowed plenty. They didn't play as well of a positional game as New Jersey.  From what I saw, and at least partially justified by these numbers at Vic Ferrari's Time on Ice site, Tyler Myers and Henrik Tallinder got beat a lot.  As a result, Buffalo had shifts where they got the puck in deep on the Devils and came out of it with no shots on net; whereas the Devils would force Lalime to make a stop constantly.   I think that's why the Devils went out and out-shot the Sabres outright 34-23.

Let me put it another way.  In a close game, the Devils found ways to generate more shots, more scoring chances, and put more pressure on the Sabres even without necessarily dominating the puck itself.  That's a pretty big positive to take into the playoffs.  The 14 shots in the third period alone showed that the Devils didn't let the tied score get to them, which is encouraging when those situations do arise.

This isn't to say the Devils made no errors.  There was one glaring fault in the third period that Buffalo should have scored on.  Tyler Ennis may feel a bit foolish that a Martin Brodeur turnover behind the net led to him getting the puck in front of an empty net in the third period.  Ennis missed, or rather Paul Martin may have gotten a stick on it to deflect it over. Either way, it was a gift and the Sabres couldn't open the package to reap the reward.  A lucky break. But those breaks were few and far between, so full credit to Martin Brodeur and the defense for making that happen.

The one time the Sabres did break through, it was Tomas Vanek right in front of the net off a loose puck.  Not much Brodeur could do at point-blank range.  In retrospect, someone should have been blocking him out; but he's been hot and came in unnoticed so credit him for doing what we've seen Zach Parise do throughout his career.   The Devils responded well to the goal with a few shots before Travis Zajac put home a rebound right past the left post, the only time Lalime was beaten - the one chance where Lalime really didn't have a strong chance at stopping the puck.

In terms of players who stuck out, well, Patrik Elias had another great night at the faceoff dot.  The Devils as a whole were beaten repeatedly at draws, as the Sabres won 28 of 48 total draws tonight.  But Elias stood out by going 10 for 13, which is great for the normally-poor drawing faceoff taker.  In terms of an overall game, Travis Zajac had the best night with 5 shots on net as well as a goal.  OK, his faceoffs were poor (6 for 15), but he was excellent at both ends and generated quite a bit of offense.   On defense, I felt Andy Greene really stood out in his 18:58 of action. He was calm with the puck, made several smart clearances, and contributed to the offensive effort with 3 shots on net. Not bad at all.

Ilya Kovalchuk passed up a few chances to shoot, but he definitely put several on net (5) and a few that left a few bruises on some Sabres (3 attempts blocked).  Interestingly, the players around Kovalchuk keep changing but I have come to a conclusion about what Jacques Lemaire should do.  First, the center doesn't matter so much because Kovalchuk has played well next to Patrik Elias and Travis Zajac at center.  Second, the right winger really needs to be someone like Dainius Zubrus or David Clarkson.  Jamie Langenbrunner had a more involved game (3 SOG) and scored the empty-net game winning goal; but the second line put on more pressure when Clarkson was winning board battles at that spot.  Just something I've noticed over the past few games.   I suppose the experimenting as well as Lemaire's insistence of him playing on entire power plays led to his 20:24 of ice time, the second most behind Martin Skoula's 20:35.

I will say it's a concern that the lines really aren't set by game 82 but if the team continues to put out performances like this, then perhaps it's not much.

All the same, I leave the reactions to you all.  The Devils are going into the playoffs with two straight wins, 4  wins out of their last 5 games, and finish second in the Eastern Conference. That's positive for certain.  Please share your thoughts, concerns, complaints, corrections, and other feelings in the comments.

Bring on the Flyers.

It’s been a while since the Devils went into the playoffs on a hot streak, with Brodeur well-rested and playing up to standards, and the team being able to roll out 4 lines that can legitimately pressure and score.

Bring on the Flyers indeed :)

Cheers on the donations

Every other series has has at least 3 nationally televised games (Versus, NBC).

What a load of crap.

I really don’t understand the NHL and their TV partners. Instead of showing the Caps, Pens, Hawks, and Wings, how about you EXPAND the market and show some other teams. Flyers-Devils have a great playoff rivalry. Not to mention Parise and Langenbrunner (Team USA stars), Ilya Kovalchuk, and a little winningest goaltender Marty Brodeur. If I were the Devils brass, I would cause some commotion about this.

Versus showed like half the Devils/Flyers game this year but don’t put any on for the playoffs? Doesn’t make sense.

I don’t really understand. It’s not only Devils fans really looking forward to this series and acknowledging the excitement. Puck Daddy on Yahoo gave ratings to each playoff series, and the Devils/Flyers ranked highest. Check out the link

Versus?

Don’t sweat it! I understand the angle that it’s a snub, but they’ll have to show us eventually when we are one of the last teams standing. Besides, we’re better off. Versus’ game coverage sucks! I’d much rather listen to Doc, Chico, Steve, the Maven, and Dano before, during, and after the games! I’ll take the games on MSG thank you, where coincidently, we’re the only game in town! Guess it’s the Rock network for the next couple of months! Sorry Rags! lmao

Could it be because Doc is on versus and NBC???

Stupid Stupid Stupid!

The Devils should have deliberately lost this game once they knew that Philly had won. Now they have to play against a team that they won once against in 6 games over the course of the season. Like those odds? I don’t either. I understand this whole momentum argument, but I think the Devils need to recognize that they haven’t matched up well against the Flyers all year and should have avoided them at all costs. In fact, a bleacherreport.com slideshow predicted that the Devils would be the only higher seed to lose in this round. In addition, since Philly style hockey is very physical and even dirty, the Devils will get beat up this round which will have a lasting effect in later rounds.

Honestly, if the Devils lose this round, I think Lemaire should be fired. As good of a coach as he is, he should have recognized that he had the option to play Boston or Philly, and made the wrong decision.

Flyers means trouble

I agree with not wanting philly. I dont agree with throwing the game. That does not work for a teams moral at all. My concern is that even if they do manage to beat philly. I can only imagine how exsausted they will be.Philly is a very physical team. One that could cause injurys and even wear out some key guys. I really hope Scott Stevens and Lemare work hard on some battle plans for this one. I bet this might even mean the return of Andrew Peters back in the line up. For what I dont know but maybe he can fall on a few of the flyers, maybe Pronger. Not to mention after watching some of the Ranger flyer game. Its CLEAR pronger will get away with many cross check penaltys. This team could have gone deep but this greatly concerns me. Oh and Belacher reports are usally foolsih to begin with. I wouldnt puyt to much stock in them

Pronger

won’t get away with half of what he did yesterday. the Refs let them play for their playoff spot. Unfortunately, the goalies were so good in regualtion and OT, it went to lolshootout, but that’s a rant on another level.

by Murdoc on Apr 12, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope so

I really get sick of that guy not getting called on anything. Some times they are so ovious you think he gave the refs a bribe

by Devilman3030 on Apr 12, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

No way.

Problem is, if they layed down so as not to play Philly, and still lost in the first round, you could argue he be fired too.

You don’t lay down for a game. Ever. Under any circumstances. It does terrible things to your guys’ heads, and gives the team you want to play added incentive to kick your ass from here to tomorrow. The Flyers are hot now, but they’re not riding a pile of skill on offense or defense. They’re a good team riding a third string goalie that has been bailing his team out for weeks now just to hang onto their payoff spot.

Sure, they beat the Devs 5 times this year. Yeah, they play (kinda) physically. I watched them play the Rags yesterday. It was boring, slow and not terribly violent. There were a handful of quality chances on each side and the goalies turned up huge, but there certainly wasn’t anything that made me think the Devs were in trouble. Hardest part of that game was knowing that one of them was going to make the playoffs.

The Devs are rolling right now, playing some of their best hockey this year. The guys are healthy, all 4 lines are producing, and there’s size and physicallity on 3 if not 4 of them. It’s going to be a good series.

by Murdoc on Apr 12, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree Murdoc

First off, yes, there was always the possibility that Boston could get hot with Tuuka Rask in net, but when the Devils were playing Buffalo, knowing that they have the choice of playing Boston or Philly, I don’t think the Devils should have made Philly there preferential opponent. I wouldn’t put this on Lemaire by any means. Losing to Boston would be a reverse of the trend so far this season. And now, if the Devils win against Philly, it would be an absolute reversal of the trend this past season.

And yes, the Flyers have won 3 of their last 4, but slumped badly before that, going 2-7-2 in the previous 11. Note that during that slump, one of those 2 wins came against the Devils. Riding a third string goalie, as you noted.

You cannot compare Devils Flyers games to Rangers Flyers games. The Devils have a much more balanced offensive attack and rely much less on their goaltender to do everything. The Flyers controlled most of the game against the Rangers, and that’s not what happens with the Devils. These all sound like good things, but for whatever reason, the Devils have struggled against this team.

If the Devils find ways to score (only 13 goals in 6 games against Philly this season) then I will be more confident about the Devils. But if they continue to put in 2 goals a game, things won’t turn out the way we want them to at the end of the series. Sure they might win a game or two, but I doubt scoring two goals a game will be sufficient to propel the Devils to the next round. Case in point: The one game the Devils won they scored 4 goals.

by NJPenguins08 on Apr 12, 2010 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

As much as I dislike the match up, I have to agree with Murdoc that laying down in a game isn’t a viable option. It would have killed the momentum the Devils built up going into the game; it would have been cause for serious concern; and it would have sent the wrong message to Boston – that they’ll “give up” if they think it’ll help them out.

Moreover, if the Rangers had done their job, then it would have been moot. But again, the Rangers Suck so of course they blew it.

This is my concern about the Flyers...

http://www.broadstreethockey.com/2010/4/11/1416063/2-new-jersey-devils-vs-7#comments

They seriously think like that.

For those who don’t want to read the whole thing…
1. Brodeur’s head is called for, and he’s called over-rated and past his prime. Repeatedly.
2. Stevens hit is mentioned many times.
3. The phrase “goes Scott Stevens” is used to describe desired action against Kovalchuk and Parise
4. Parise is identified as the devils forward to “be taken out of the equation.”

I’m not ocncerned about the Flyers. I’m concerned that Pronger isn’t going to be thrown the F out the first time he takes a BS shot at the skill players with whom they know they cannot compete. I sincerely hope that all the attention to head-shots this year is going to produce a tight calling officiating crew. In a hockey game with a few fights, the Devils win easy. In a streetfight with a hockey backdrop, its a different story.

I hadn’t heard of Kovalchuk with the Devils since late last year

My brain hurts..

by Matthew Ventolo on Apr 13, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

we can handle the toughstuff.

The Devils match up physically with a lot of teams. If you watch the Devils they do not lose many fights. Let the Flyers take dumb penalties and hopefully we will capitalize. The way to stop the goon play is a strong powerplay.
