Devils need to be very careful. The refs are calling the stick fouls hard and their PPs haven’t looked good despite the goal. They need to move the puck smartly going forward.

That’s one out of many NHL rules I never liked. The coincidental minors where a players get’s called for a trip/hook/slash/etc AND the player who “drew” the penalty that dives also gets one. It’s either one or the other, no?

My main concern
4 PPs, 3 shots on net. Sure they scored and Braydon Coburn denied Zajac an open look at the net; but with that much PP time, there needs to be more on the attack. They’re inconsistent in getting the puck into the zone and then keeping it in.
I’d like to see a second period with more even strength play; let’s see if the Flyers are willing to play by the rules.

Honestly
I just haven’t been impressed with Kovy on the PP. With him on the ice the entire 2 minutes every time, I feel like we get so one dimensional… just pass around and hope for a shot from the point (which we most of the time miss). I know Kovy is supposed to be the savior on the PP, but to me anyway, this isn’t working well at all. I’m obviously not saying take him off the PP by any means, but lets vary the attack a little.
The whole problem with the last PP is that the whole unit is trying these large cross-ice passes and other feeds to no avail. They need to simplify. Not just Kovalchuk, but Elias, Parise, et. al.

But thanks to Rolston firing through a Zubrus screen and it’s 2-2.
Devils will have some carry over time on a PP (Betts off for slashing/breaking Salvador’s stick). They nearly had the cross-ice pass set up but the puck bounced too much for a good shot.
Honestly, the Devils have to sharpen up much in their on-ice play. Their passing, vision, shooting accuracy, faceoffs. But they HAVE to feel good being on the road and tying it up in a period where they didn’t do so well. This game is very possible, Devils. Let’s make it happen!

That’s very surprising. The puck was in our defensive a lot of more, and A LOT of their shots were blocked (maybe 9 or 10 that period).
Devils do have 15 SOG but 29 combined that were blocked or missed. an almost 33% chance of hitting the net has to change this period.
Best stat of that period was goals (1-1)

Overal, the Devils haven’t played a very good game. Marty’s been the best player on the ice. Get it rolling in OT, and stealing this game is a huge momentum crushing got PHI.

SHOTS
18 shots through three periods of play simply will not win you any playoff games. The devils dont need to be patient or relaxed, they need to be desperate and SHOOT the puck. flyers have 28 shots and have dominated the whole game for the most part, certainly second and third. ONLY good news is if the devils can find a way to get a goal, they might break the flyers back because they have played so well to not get the win for the flyers would really hurt. Start fresh here, and put the offensive pressure ON.
Quality over quantity.
That said, the Devils had very little offense to keep Philly honest in the third period. They need more possession first THEN they can get shots.

did we have a shot in OT? did we have a shot in the final 5 minutes of the third? dont think so, no offensive energy. and no pressure on the flyers bring up the puck. they were able to bring the puck in our zone at will. we had no forecheck. frankly we looked beat, out of energy. the first period was by far our most evenly played with those power plays up front and even that period was average.
Seriously..
I cant take this team anymore. The great seasons and heart break in the playoffs. I think I may just not watch the rest of this series to calm myself down…. I hope for the best. see you next series if we make it

I dont want to blame lemaire, i like him. But why was fraser in the lineup. he played perhaps one game maybe two in the final month of the season. and then you put him in this situation, thats very hard for any player to do, espesially a rookie. I dont know what people think about corrente, i know he had a couple shots, but also took a penalty that resulted in a goal. but again i cant remember the last time before this series he actually played. I would prefer lemaire stick with players who have the legs under them and are in the momentum of their game.
but we lost the game because have zero offense. cant even get the puck in their zone cleanly.
We pissed away
the power plays early on, and then watching the flyers power play was disheartening – they could just come in our zone and set up, and actually get good shots, where as we just hope to get in the zone, and even then don’t really set up that consistent of an offense.
come on – the devils are not a minor league team, what’s the matter with these guys? i think devils are so much better than the flyers in terms of talent -
these penalty calls on a few of these have been atrocious – what the hell are they looking at when they call this stuff, god it’s frustrating .

dont blame it on the calls
they called some questionable penalties for both teams. but no excuse, devils got BEAT clear and simple. i dont think they win the series from what i have seen, but if they do it will have to start in the first period of game 4 with a major offensive attack that remains persistent for 60 minutes. it boggles my mind with the offensive talent on this team how we only muster 18 shots.

That call on Clarkson was sickening. Not only did he not do anything to call a penalty like that in overtime boggles my mind. I hope this game does not cost us the series.

Contrary to the past games, the Devils played pretty lousy in the third period and did not lose this game until overtime only because of Marty’s presence. Almost half of the game had some team on the advantage; I won’t complain about this because the Devils had plenty of missed opportunities, but the fact that 30 minutes of a game was spent on the power play is insane.
Losing that first game at home, the pressure is completely on the Devils to produce a win, on the road, in order to keep the series tied. If they do lose on Tuesday and go down 3-1, everything is pretty much over.
