I said it before
but I’d like to repeat myself. If we do this two things, I think we’ll win
1) Screen the goalie
- Especially on Power Plays. That’s how Rolston got his 2nd goal.
2) Don’t leave your a flyer by himself on the opposite side of the net
I never want to see 4 Devils and Brodeur covering the same area and leave a guy wide open on the other side of the net.
I won’t be able to watch it live, but I’m recording it and going to watch it later.
Go Devils!
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
i absolutly agree with you. cause brody is playing awsome they gotta back him up and support him with some goals.

Must win...
Devils need a win here tonight… I’m not sure we’ll see another 2000 if they lose. Alright let’s go boys!!!! Big win tonight…. LETS GO DEVILS!!!!!!!
OK - I clicked on the song
Steve – It’s the 1st time I’ve ever clicked on one of your song links. Partly because we have different tastes. But I clicked on it tonight for Karma. . . . the wrecking crew better be dressed in White tonight.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

Do or Die
Although technically it isn’t a do or die, in reality we must one this game in order to make this a series. LETS GO DEVILS
"We aim above the mark to hit the mark." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Pelley In?
Looks like Pelley is in for Corrente according to TG over on Fire and Ice. Skoula is also likely in for Fraser.
Hopefully this team comes out fired up…if it wasn’t for Marty, they wouldn’t have gotten to OT last game.
Team that wins this game
Wins the series..
With that said. LEts go Devils.
Starting Lineup per TG
Forwards: Zach Parise-Travis Zajac-Jamie Langenbrunner. Defensemen: Paul Martin-Andy Greene. Goaltender: Martin Brodeur.
by Matthew Ventolo on Apr 20, 2010 7:28 PM EDT reply actions
hopefully for the best
I think Jacques does the lineup shuffle too often but I think this is a good look for them.
Ironically, he’s kept the same lines through Games 2 and 3 for the most part.
Will Langenbrunner wake up now?

except after game 2
he decides to put in a rookie defenseman for Skoula. And he started Langs with Niedermayer and Rolston…the checking line he had for Game 1, but then changed back to the Game 2 lines.
Oh Captain, My Captain!
Langs needs to do more than just be on the ice. We need our captain more then ever!

Will you fight?
Not with a direct link to the “Captain, my Captain” but it is at the end. You can imagine the Devils on the desks looking a Langs.

Ottawa has no chance in this series.
they blew it
a game resulting in Mr. Boucher being pulled from his net would do wonders for this series...just a thought
Let’s not cross a line.

You would think Clarkson would fit the mold...
of a perfect playoff player…like our dear old Claude. Yet he seems to be off balance in the sense he is all agitation and grit with not enough attention paid to his skill and common sense.
You give Claude little credit; he was a more complete player, more of a scorer than Clarkson currently is.

Well, 12 shots on net by the Devils; 6 missed; 6 blocked; up 1-0 from Kovalchuk on a 5-on-3 power play goal. The PP looked good on their three opportunities and Kovalchuk is the boxscore hero with 5 shots on net to go with his goal.
Flyers look a better in 5-on-5, but can they keep it together to keep it that way?
All the same, it’s a good start. Let’s see how the second goes for the Devils.

Chris Neil scores a garbage goal. Before the loose puck, the pointman held onto the puck and saw TWO Pens slide down and still got it through. The power of patience.

I thought the power play before the second 5 on 3 and on looked really good. They were moving the puck fast and kept the Flyers on their heels. It sucks they only got one goal out of it, but that one goal sure does help, haha.

nice goal
I never thought Arron Asham would come back and haunt us like this. Getting goals and taking all these shots on Marty. Asham had real nice goal in the regular season on Marty. He fits in there REAL nice!
Good period by the Devils. They still look a little tentative cause they trying to stay out of the box and giving up turnovers.
They need to keep it nice and simple on the PS&G PP. They will get more of them!!
Philly is going to come out strong here in the 2nd period just like they did before.
Second period starts

I wanna know how the puck went through Parise's legs

This team needs...something in intermission
If it’s a pep-talk, then let there be a pep-talk.
If it’s a cold analysis, then let there be analysis
If it’s throwing a garbage can, then throw some garbage cans.
It’s only 2-1. It’s doable. But the Devils need so much more than what they have shown in the second. Brodeur’s made too many huge saves to be faulted. The D’s made too many important stops to say it’s all on them. The O’s inconsistent but they have shown they can do this.
The team will only win as a team or lose as one.
Death or Glory. It’s a choice, Devils. Make it yours.

Excuse my tone, but are you thick?
It’s MORE than just the PP. It’s about getting pucks past the red line. It’s about making passes at all areas of the rink. It’s about putting shots on net. It’s about intensity and energy and confidence.
Yes, the PP is a problem. It’s not the WHOLE problem. The roots of these problems are mental and that’s why I want the team to sort it out ASAP more than anything else. We all know how well this team can play. It’s almost like they need to be reminded of that.

I thought the Devils understood that:
This game was a must win. I am not happy with the quality of play that we just wittnessed in the Second period. The Devils are not playing the puck. The Flyers are feeding off of thier emotionless play. Are the Devils scared of the Flyers? There has to be a reasonable explaination for this. I have already given my take on the refs but what is happening with the Devils? By the way, My post button is inactive. What gives?

He tapped a Flyer in the midsection. They called it a crosscheck. It was a tap. They might as well give every center a penalty for taking faceoffs.

I’ve stayed quiet about the refs because more often than not, it’s a call per the rulebook. One can’t have it both ways where the other team gets caught but then complain about calls when your team takes them.
THAT said…what in the world WAS the Zajac call? Did MSG+ even replay it?

No they didn’t..It was right after the faceoff and the clear…If he did do anything of the sort, it’s a stupid call..
But this seems to be the one series where the refs just like to call every little thing..
Problem is if this was 5 on 5 (which the Flyers have dominating in), I don’t think this game really changes…just the tempo gets stabbed when a whistle blows every few minutes

why no forecheck??/Lemaire
anyone watching this game will know the flyers have dominated 5-5 and the whole game outside of the first 10 minutes. Devils offense is non existent 5-5. Why dont we respond to the flyers forecheck with of our own??? I have to say, not only are the flyers outplying us in terms of intensity, they are also out coaching us. THe flyers, it is clear, came into the series with a strategy. Lemaire keeps doing the same thing, no forecheck, switching lines indiscriminately and chaotically. lemairs inability to come to some consistent view of how his offensive personel should line up MUST explain some of the incredible offensive inconsistency on a team with so much talent. All those who argued “oh we will be in a good position to have offensive versatility with all the changing lines” i believe are being proved wrong. our offensve is confused and bewildered and i have to put some of that on Lemaire terrible handling of the lines.
I think forechecking is a penalty in this game…maybe?

Why would he want to play here? It’s a team incapable of getting past the first round. He wants to win. And you honestly think a team wouldn’t mind signing him, even if he is a RFA? He’s an elite player. Teams would jump all over him.
Teams are not going to give up an entire draft class to sign him as an RFA. Too expensive, especially in this cap driven world, and GMs are loathe to try it because then it makes their own fair game.
Besides which, there are fourteen teams every year that miss the playoffs, and eight more that flame out in the first round. The Devils are in the hunt every year, and that matters to a lot of players…. the playoffs are a crapshoot.
Honestly, they haven’t been “in the hunt” since 2003. And in case you haven’t noticed, poaching an RFA has already been done, and for a much lesser player. Not too many players like Parise come around every draft class, especially if you’re a team like Detroit that perenially drafts in the bottom of the first round.
GMs have a gentleman’s agreement to leave their hands off. They don’t always follow it, but most GMs won’t do it because they need to get along.
Kessel wasn’t an RFA signing, although Brian Burke was setting the team up to do just that last summer.
Exactly.
But how many GMs actually will go out and do it? Brian Burke doesn’t give a damn, so he’ll make an offer. Kevin Lowe in Edmonton went shopping several years ago and ended up overpaying for Dustin Penner. Most of the rest won’t, and it isn’t like many have the cap space to offer Parise money the Devils won’t just snap their fingers and match…. assuming of course ZP even wants to sign an offer sheet with said team.
Like I said, it doesn’t matter how many will actually do it. It’s just a matter of if one GM does do it and if Parise likes the offer and thinks he’ll have a better chance to win on that team. If so, then he’ll sign it. Will Lou match? Who knows? If he has the money, probably. But I wouldn’t be too surrised if he let him walk and took the compensation either. I didn’t say in my original post that “Parise is defintely walking”, all I said was Devils fans should be a bit concerned that Parise may decide he can’t win a Cup here, and goes somewhere else. The kid has been here for five seasons and he hasn’t gotten anywhere past Game 5 of the second round. I wouldn’t blame him for walking.
Most teams that go after RFAs and overbid for them are large market teams that desperately need an infusion of talent and headlines. Good teams won’t do it, because they’ll pay their own to keep a team together. If the concern is “winning a Cup”, why would he want to go somewhere like Edmonton right now?
Last time I checked, Edmonton isn’t a large market team. You say with certainty that “good teams won’t do it”, but you don’t have a clue what a GM will do because the time hasn’t come yet and the opportunity isn’t there. You’re saying it’s totally out of the realm of possibilities, and I’m saying that it’s definitely not impossible. Who says a team like the Wild, who draft like shit anyway, won’t offer him something, because they feel that they’re uncertain they can draft a player of his caliber? And who says he doesn’t jump at the chance to try and win a Cup in his home state? Especially if the Devils are going to perenially be a one-and-done playoff team. You just don’t know until the time comes, so you can’t say that it 100% won’t happen.
You’re right, I don’t. But Edmonton stinks right now, and will probably need a few years to turn it around. Minnesota isn’t so hot, either. If Parise’s interest is in winning a Cup, as you say, why would Minnesota or Edmonton be a good place? As an RFA, he can’t just take a lowball deal from an elite contender, because the Devils will match and be done with it. To pry Parise loose, you have to overpay and make him the focus of your team…. and that probably means there isn’t a lot around it.
As for Edmonton, they’re Canada. Ask them, they consider all six of their teams “large market”, especially as the six of them put together bring in roughly 1/3 of the NHL’s revenue right now.
Nowhere did I say that Edmonton is going to be the team that makes the offer, nor did I say he would accept a lowball offer from a contender. My point is (and pay attention): IF HE FEELS HE CANNOT WIN A CUP IN NJ, I DOUBT HE SIGNS JUST BECAUSE HE’S RFA. No matter what shape any other team is in, if Parise doesn’t think the Devils are capable of winning, then there will be no point in resigning with them, especially if someone offers him more money. Who knows, he might just want a change of scenery? And yes, I know the Wild aren’t too fantastic, but he might relish the opportunity to build something there. All that matters is whether he thinks the Devils can win. If he does, he’ll most likely stay. If he doesn’t, he’ll at least sign the offer sheet.
Parise isn’t going anywhere. Besides, isn’t he an RFA after this current deal, which gives the Devils matching rights?
That too.

The Devils need to win three straight against a team that has won (and I’m only slightly hyperbolizing) 105 of the last 110 matchups, while holding the Devils’ offense to 2 goals or less in 102 of those games.

What's the use?
Since the lockout ended, the Devils have flamed out in the postseason with Lou, Lemaire, and Sutter behind the bench. Simply making another coaching change isn’t going to change the result.
There seems to be a severe lack of intensity, heart, and backbone on this roster. The big question I see for this team going forward is how can they change the composition of the roster, who can be brought in or brought up to provide those missing ingredients, to provide the basic leadership that this team has been sorely lacking since the lockout.

If I had to try and put a finger on it, there’s something missing, those “intangibles” that are always talked about. Both here and in San Jose.
While he’ll never put up gaudy numbers, a grinder and character guy like Ian Laperriere is the type of guy the Devils could use. They had Claude Lemieux for the first two cups, Nieuwendyk for the third. Those kind of players.
They’ve just had our number this year…Doesn’t mean they are “better.”

people are commenting this team doesnt have much heart, its hard to completely disagree. I have commented crtically on Lemaire in terms of handling of offense/lines, but I’d have to say I’ve been disapointed in Langenbrunner in terms of captaining the team. I was so proud of him during the Olympics, it stuns me. I dont know if being shuffled around to so many lines, even the third line at times which is crazy, has really hurt his confidence.

Go to Game 5 please.. I would be there in second if I had the chance… Cheer on the Team…No matter what the outcome is…If you have the money, please go… Make the Rock the color it needs to be every game

I know its a business
But they shouldn’t let anybody with a Flyer Jersey into the arena on Thursday.
Go Jets
Go Devils
The closest you could come....
…. is to try and restrict ticket sales by zip code. Unfortunately, you’d have an ACLU case if you tried to ban people based on a jersey.
the capitals email all the people in the area who have attended games before they go on
sale to the general public.

They should have
…. just tanked the last game of the season and taken on Boston. Then it would not have mattered what happened in that shootout.
I said that about 20 times
and got called a coward for it
by Drew Palmer on Apr 20, 2010 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Because it’s stupid. The Devils didn’t tank for Mario Lemieux. They weren’t and shouldn’t tank just to avoid the Flyers.
Yeah, I felt otherwise for a bit but at the end of the day, you play who you get and the Devils have yet to rise up to the level where they needed to be for the Flyers – that’s on the Devils. That’s not on the schedule or anything else.

It was in the Devils hands that sunday. All they had to do was lose against the Sabres. lose by one single goal, and face an opponent they have actually beaten this year. But who knows? Maybe this is their fate.

by Drew Palmer on Apr 20, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Who was calling you a coward? I think most people believed that the Devils needed to be able to beat any team in the playoffs regardless of the opponent. I don’t blame them for that thought. You don’t have a choice, when in the playoffs, of who you face. You move on and you hope you outlast the opposition. Just because the Devils could have faced Montreal doesn’t necessarily mean that a problem that has been reoccuring since January – an inconsistent offense – would have been solved.

Switching lines, game after game...
cant not be ignored. It’s idiotic.
i dont think the report from this which john writes is not going to be readable with rage, or even worse, the disappointment he conveys with it.
Ireland? An Ice Hockey Team?
You'd better believe it...
It’s going to the latter. And given some of the comments – I see we are now blaming the coach for the players not getting up to do their jobs – it’s not going to go over well.

I'm not saying the coach is the only problem....
….but he is part of the problem. We’ve raged about his line combinations all year, playing some guys and not others, etc., etc., etc.
The players play, and the lion’s share is on them. Certainly we can blame the referees for how they are calling this series — though the players had to adjust to that. However, the coach has to take some blame for this, and it is easier to fire Lemaire than to trade off half the team.

Which might happen but won’t solve the root problems.

I mean, it was the answer after 2009, right? Granted, Sutter quit on his deal but I doubt too many were unhappy about that after Game 7.

Agreed
But you can’t just come back in September with the entirely same set-up (with or without Kovalchuk)…. and it isn’t easy to trade off piles of players. Some have toxic contracts, some have no-trade clauses, some you want to build around.
i agree its mainly the players though the constant chaos in terms of lines from Lemaire could not have helped them by way of getting momentum offensively. But changing coaches wont make this a better team alone. It will be to be a fundamental change of direction in terms of personel on the ice. Id say you could start by asking which players on the current team are indispensable to the future, and must be kept. And to that question I answer two long Devil greats (elias and Marty) and their two best young offensive players (Parise and Zajac). other than that I think everyone is on the table for trade to reconstitute the team
Okay....
You’ve taken those four off the table. Assume Kovalchuk and Martin leave as free-agents, along with some of the lesser lights (McAmmond, Niedermeyer, Mottau, Skoula, and so on).
If you’re looking to make a major trade to shake up the team, who is left to deal? You might get something for Langenbrunner. Clarkson will have some value to another team. Beyond that, I think you’d have to deal kids for veterans, because the remaining veterans either have no-trade clauses, bad contracts, or both.
It's just frustration.
Everyone wants to find the ONE reason why they lost. They don’t mean it (I hope so at least).
I’m at a lost for words with how they can’t play their game, let alone play it effectively
by Matthew Ventolo on Apr 20, 2010 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
But
there isn’t just ONE reason, or at least not one specific reason, not playing well enough isn’t a good reason, needs more details. There are plenty of reasons they’re losing this series.
Go Jets
Go Devils
Absolutely
It’s a number of things that combine them “not playing well enough.”
Series’ are all about adjustments game after game, period after period. The coaches need to recognize it, the players have to execute it. Play mart hockey over desperate hockey.
This series just isn’t playing out the way the Devils want it to. Whether it be bounces, the penalties called, the special teams; It’s just the Devils can’t find that flow to their game we are all accustom to.

Just give us an honest one
About how Boucher has totally outplayed Broduer. Hey Marty had a great game 3, but Boucher was on tonight.
And why can’t we win one series at the Rock? Maybe they’ll get their W tomorrow.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.

You could be on too if a team fired about 15-20 pucks into your chest.

It’s really just a question of where they can find consistency in their lineup. As all of you have known since the midpoint of the season, there has been absolutely no consistency in how the Devils have played. I don’t think you can pinpoint the problem and change it, just like that. There are so many variables. But the scapegoats will be Lemaire and Langenbrunner because they are the faces, and they will most likely be brought to attention first if the Devils do in fact lose.
"We aim above the mark to hit the mark." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’m really not that surprised with how they are playing considering they have been 20-17-6 since the new year. The Flyers are 22-17-4 since the new year.
I thought we would step it up in the playoffs but really this team hasn’t played well all year except in November and December.
I don’t know what the problem is but if we lose this series I would like to see a lot of changes. As long as they put in the effort to make this team better I’ll be happy.
clean house
then big bucks spent on new defense in my opinion.
by Imperator_Celtic on Apr 20, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
i agree with cleaning house. Elias, Marty and Zajac, Parise, would be the only 4 untouchables in my view. everyone else would be on the tradeblock should they fit in a deal that got the devils going in a new direction .
i hope parise wants to stay
but at this point i wouldnt hold it against him if he wants to be on a contender.not the rangers thow that would just suck.

But were they really deserving of losing their jobs? Did they not have the lowest GA in the league? Surely credit should be given where it is due. The Devils defense played pretty damn good this year and it resulted in the Jennings trophy. Considering the level of talent on the blue line, I think they all overperformed.
"We aim above the mark to hit the mark." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
And we’re feeling the pain for it now. Overperforming in the regular season leads to early playoff exits.
Go Jets
Go Devils
imagin how good they would be with some power back there.

We've seen this before....
Reminds me of 1997-1998-1999. Great regular season teams all three years, and very disappointing playoff results against teams we should have owned.
It is simply a matter of figuring out what is missing and bringing it in. I brought up Laperriere much higher in the post — I think a guy like him would be a smart investment if he can be found.
I’d just like to say that Zubrus has been our best forward in this series so far. Dude never gives up and fights so hard for the puck.

he is amazing and I hate the people that hate on him. We really need to just put KOVY ELIAS AND PARISE on the same line. That should blow their mind… haha not MAYBE ZUB, KOVY PARISE
by CaramelCoveredXMas on Apr 20, 2010 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha, I’m not sure how well that would work. I liked Parise, Zajac, and Zubrus together and then Kovy, Elias, and Clarkson. I’d feel bad putting Langenbrunner on the third line, but Clarkson is playing with way more passion than him right now and would help getting Kovy some more space. Did ZZZ play together in this game?

Brutal, just brutal
I am sitting there in a sports bar in Jacksonville florida with my Zajac jersey on looking like an idiot watching the Flyers toast us.
The Flyers PP is killing us. And we cannot score. Bitterly, bitterly disappointing.
Bottom line though is that the Flyers have earned this series lead. I don;t know how we are letting this scrub of a goalie beat us, but he is.
This sucks.

Dear Lou,
Please fire Lemaire and just step in right now!
There’s really nothing left to lose at this point than the series, which is almost lost. You thought that the team had something special and so you went after Kovalchuk. Obviously whatever you saw isn’t transpiring the way you envisioned, so step in.
While I understand the players have played absolutely awful the past few games… there are no trades to be made to fix this anymore. We have to make do with what we have, and you seemed to think what we have was good enough for a run at the Cup. So if that truly is the case (and how cold it be not if you of all people traded for Kovalchuk) then the coaching staff isn’t getting through to team anymore or just doesn’t understand how to use the team you have assembled. But hopefully you do?
This team needs a serious wake-up call, and while this may be a last ditch desperate and extreme measure, what’s the difference when you’re down 3-1 facing a third straight first round exit? Lemaire wasn’t in the team’s long-term plans anyway. What’s left to lose now besides the series by firing him? The team? It looks like he may have already lost them anyway. At the very least maybe the players will rally around the GM who so believes in the team he has built to start playing to their potential… who knows? But it’s worth a shot at this point in my book.
