2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoff Chat Thread for 4/25

Bonus Question: I've only got one response to this yesterday, and a valid one. But I'll ask one more time: I keep reading that the Devils defense isn't good enough. Given we're in the Age of the Internet, what is the evidence that it isn't? Leave your answers in the comments in addition to talking about today's playoff games.

Your schedule for today:

2 PM EDT - NBC, TSN - Phoenix (2) @ Detroit (3)
9 PM EDT - VERSUS, CBC - Vancouver (3) @ Los Angeles (2)

I'll take a stab

09-10 Defensemen were a combined +44 (13 guys)
02-03 Defensemen were a combined +92 (10 guys)

Best +/- this season was Martin’s +10. Stevens, Niedermayer, Rafalski, White and Albelin all were +10 or better.

384 SOG vs 711 SOG over those two seasons.

Goals against from Hockey-reference.com (as the others) 166 vs 191.

The numbers show a defense corps that isn’t good at producing goals, and isn’t as good as the (admittedly one of the best groups this franchise has ever seen) 02-03 corps. And I think that is what we saw in the series vs the Flyers. A total inability to move the puck and create, made worse, by the way, by having Martin and Greene on one unit. White, Mottau, Salvador, and Skoula were pretty terrible in that department, making the whole system break down.

Agreed

While you can use the numbers as evidence support, results speak volumes. Quite simply the defense benefits from the overall aggressive backchecking done by the offense. When you have all 5 players running down and backchecking it is a lot easier to overlook the defense.

Quite simple, Philly exploited the lack of puck moving ability by the defense. The aggressive forecheck put the pressure on the defense, causing a system collapse. This also filtered to the lack of effective breakouts, often get stopped in the neutral zone or even their own end. This is the same defense that has gotten exploited each year in the playoffs since the departure of some of the more solid names.

Look at the top teams in overall defense. You have a few that benefit from the conservative system – NJ, BOS, PHX

However you also have others like CHI which have an open system and low goals. Just look at Chicago.

Keith, Campbell, Seabrook, Hjarlmasson, Barker, Hendry

Where do you think the would fit in NJ….I think easily the top 2 defense pairs. You could even make a case that 2-3 are better than Paul Martin.

I guess a better question would be …Game is on the line, the opponent is throwing its top lines out at you…..Who would throw out there to shut them down.

How many names and pair would you throw out before you hit a NJ player.

Or Reverse is….who would you want out leading the offensive attack.

Hell, I’m sure a few people are in fantasy leagues, who did you choose 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

what is the evidence that it isn’t?

Simple answer: because they didn’t win in the post-season with it.

The question that question raises in my mind is, good enough for what? They were good enough to win a Jennings Trophy. Good enough to overcome the loss of their best defenseman for most of the season. Good enough to shut down some of the top-scoring teams in the league.

What it comes down to is critics and lazy journalists falling back on the “there are no big name players on the team” routine, when they themselves ensure that guys like Martin and Greene, who deserve to be known names, aren’t.

They confuse “not good” with “not perfect.”

Thats a tough one

I see your point but do you really want to watch the Flyers every sunday and on versus? Talking about the Devil Flyer series. No. I want to see the Caps/Habs beat them in 4 games. Were the losers not them.

that slow motion clip of jovanaski blocking that shot and going down looked pretty painful.

Keith Yandle said it best

“It was do or die for us, so we thought we (defense) should be jumping into the play and forcing it into their zone.”
Did you see any of that in Game 5 for us? NOPE.

i saw nothing from them in any of the games really, seemed like the flyers could skate right up to the front of the net pass a couple of times and score virtually at will.

Yeah

Pronger was impressive and Matt Carle was a big force in that series.
