Could 2011 finally be the Devils Year?
I mean think about it... A new coach, a changed team, a Kovy less team or a Kovy filled team, and a team that wants to prove something yet again... Lou has come to say there will be changes next year. Major changes, starting off with Jacques.. Agree or not it is odd he retires after Lou says he will be back next year.. This will be a revamped team with a lot of new faces.. And this asks the question.. Could 2011 finally be what we asked for?
We start off without a coach, question marks with Kovy, Martin, and Clarkie, and Jamie Langenbrunner.. Kovalchuk says everything right but didn't we see that with Gomez? Paul likes the team but first round losses are bothering him. David really isn't in the news but he still is a big asset in the offseason. And finally Jamie Langenbrunner.. Was it Jacques or was he hurt? We'll never know. But a new coach can help Jamie, Hopefully.
Ilya Kovalchuk or not this will be a better Devils team.... Given they sign a center, puckmoving defenseman, and an absolute wall in front of Marty (aka Volchenkov). A Kovy on the team means losing one of the above or maybe all of it according to what he wants. Obviously, Mathew Lombardi could be the man to sign. Paul Martin could be passed up easily although it would be tough without him in the playoffs. I have faith in Fraser and Salmela. And another big task this year... Have a good draft. This year can tell how built we are for the future.. Like goaltending fro example. Maybe Conz would be available with the Thrasher's pick.
This offseason starting with coaching could spark this team next year. (Hopefully) I feel letting go Kovy could pay more dividends than having him.. You lose him, you can get Lombardi, Hamhuis, and Volchenkov. I have a lot trust in Lou and support everything he does but we need to make a "splash" this year.

Yes it could be. I don’t think Lou is going to be conservative in the off season. Marty is not getting any younger and neither is Lou. I will be shocked if he doesn’t field Kovalchuk a reasonable offer. I think Clarkson will be resigned.
As far as Martin. I don’t if they will sign him. I think a lot will depend on what kind of money goes to Kovalchuk.
If they are unable to sign either of them. I think Lou will invest in other upgrades from outside the organization.
I don’t think its going to be lets bring these five guys up from the minors. Fill the holes and roll with it. Not that I personally would have a problem with that. It would surprise me at this point.
An awfully ambitious shopping list, that’s my take on things. In a perfect world (or a computer game), you might be able to get most of your list. In today’s NHL, there aren’t enough dollars to go around for all of them, as other teams will be bidding heavily on the same guys. Lombardi would be a nice piece, but I’m not so sold on Hamhuis, Volchenkov, et al.
I’d rather re-sign much of what we have here. Lou’s track record on the open free agent market is very spotty. The closest thing we’ve had to a big success since the lockout is Dainius Zubrus, and put him up against Brian Rolston, Vladimir Malakhov, Dan McGillis, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
If we do go outside the organization, and we also lose Kovalchuk, I’d put in a big bid for Patrick Marleau if the Sharks don’t re-sign him first.
Nothing wrong with bringing up the kids and letting them have a chance. The team did very well with a lot of youth in the lineup in the first half of the season…. and the Devils did pretty much the same thing in 2000 when they won the Cup: Gomez, Rafalski, White, and Madden were all rookies that year if I recall correctly.
Yes but
Marleau has done nothing in the playoffs.. He would be nice though.

Marleau has also played most of his career being “the guy” for the Sharks. I think he could flourish if he didn’t have such weighty expectations (and the “C”) on his shoulders. Beyond that, he is a bonafide scorer, and that is one of the real problems with the Devils — they don’t score enough. If Kovalchuk walks, you need someone who can take some of the scoring load off Parise and whomever he plays with, or other teams will simply roll their top defensive players out against Zach and take their chances.
2011 will be the start of things moving in the right direction in terms of shedding our dead weight. It will be the last year of Langenbrunner’s contract, which means sink or swim. Either he gives his all and puts in a great year, or we know by December that with Parise’s next contract comes the ‘C.’ It’s inevitable he’s the next captain, and it will be nice to have someone leading the team who actually cares, and leads.
Pandolfo’s contract will also be up after next year, provided we don’t buy him out first. Player loyalty is great but not at the expense of the team. His roster spot can be put to better use.
Perhaps the best news of all, Andrew Peters’ contract will be up! Considering no one is going to want him in a trade, another mistake comes off the books.
With the wealth of kids we have who are ready for some responsibility, I really hope 2011 is FINALLY the start of the youth movement. The Sestitos, the Correntes, and the Zharkhovs played better than most of our veterans throughout the year, and the one thing we were clearly lacking in the playoffs against Philly is drive, determination, and grit.
I know it’s not the Lou way, but the Lou way is the way of the old NHL. Rebuild NEEDS to be in our vocabulary, Lou, we have a cap to work around now. If we have to take one or two steps back to lead to giant steps forward, I don’t know about anyone else but I’ll wait it out because it will be worth it.

PLAYERS WE SHOULD LOOK AT
DEFENSE
Marc Andre Bergeron
Carlo Colaiacovo ( great upside and can be had cheap)
Tomas Kaberle (as long as it doesnt involve key prospects)
Brett Clarke
Mike VanRyn
Centers
- TARGET- Tomas Plekanic
- TARGET- Matthew Lombardi
Sign Kovalchuk-Plekanic-Bergeron-Clark and I’m happy.
Let Martin-Mottau-Niedermayer-McAmmond-Skoula walk
Pandolfo should be released and sent down
Let some of the kids get a SERIOUS look, we need their speed.
Not only are you short a backup goaltender

I don’t think there’s enough money to make all this work.
Also, who in the world is centering the third and fourth lines in this scenario?

I wasnt addressing the backuo goaltenfer
Last I checked John the backup goaltender wasn’t very important in ANY of our playoff runs recently, and i doubt even on Lou’s radar at this moment!
Who are your suggestions?
Last i checked Zubrus was a center and Zajac-Plekanic-Zubrus-Pelley would look prety strong down the middle, oh and by the way Ben Walter led Lowell in scoring this year and is a center, and we have Josefson and Henrique coming through the system pretty quickly.
You still need to have 2 goalies on a roster. It’s a rule.
I’d keep Danis for $500k or a little more. If he says no, go out and get a similar goalie for about $500k or more. There’s no reason to overpay for a backup.

Zubrus is a center/wing. He can play center. But is he a natural center? No. If anything, the end of the season and the playoffs proved that he is more effective as a winger, preferably on a line that likes to cycle.
Also, Pelley played this past season largely at left wing. I guess he could move back to center, but why?
Ben Walter is an AHL center. He has to prove he can play at the NHL level first. Maybe he’ll make it, he’ll get a shot in camp. But he and Tim Sestito are not third-line caliber centers. Neither will Henrique or Josefsson be by 2010-11.

Again- I'm not addressing Goaltenders at the moment
At some point I will look at the goaltending situation, but in the scheme of what we are talking about right now it is insignificant. When I do take a look I might lean towards an experienced veteran who may not mind a limited role over Danis, but he has been serviceable.
Zubrus would be fine as a 3rd line center, he was brought here as a center not a wing.
Are you suggesting Neidermayer stays? He came in with a splash and disappeared, and is to slow.
Ben Walter is no kid, he is 26, led lowell in points, and was a leader down there. In a fourth line role he would be fine. Remember we gave up a pretty good prospect to get him. Pelley is also a natural Center, and if you recall was being groomed for the Madden role. Sestito is also a center, so if Henrique or Josefson isnt ready there are other choices. And Fourth line centers are not our problem, we need a legit #2 center of at least Zajac quality.
I would much rather hear your ideas on what you think the team should do, rather then why you think my ideas and the ideas of others are bad. So far you want to keep Danis… What else? keep Pando? Keed Nieds? Sign who?
He hasn’t yet outlined his ideas in one convenient post (though I’m sure it’s on the way), but he has mentioned some ideas in his seasonal recap posts that hint how he’s leaning as far as who the team should keep and what they should target.

Plekanec isn't going anywhere
His call on beating the Caps and heroics in that series have made him esteemed in Montreal. Don’t expect him to be on the market.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
Have Yu looked at the habs cap numbers
The Habs have 24 million tied up with 6 players under contract and a ton of restricted and unrestricted free agents. Altough they will want to keep Plekanec there is a real possibility that they can not afford to keep him.
Gomez cap number alone makes Kovachuk look like a steal at 8 million…..
Montreal currently has $12.6 million in cap space but only 13 Montreal players under contract. Since Price/Halak is going to get paid and they’ll probably want to keep Pouilot, Sergei Kostitsyn, Maxim Lapierre, it’s entirely possible that Montreal can’t really afford to keep Plekanec.
Who is the third highest scorer among all UFAs in this coming summer, just behind Kovalchuk and Marleau.
Does this mean the Devils will be able to get him? I don’t know. If they do, you can forget about either one of Kovalchuk or Martin because the money then starts to really make no sense.

Lou's Agenda
1. Resign Kovy, Martin, and clarkson
2. Get 2 decent centers (madden and Plakanec)
3. Get an amazing defenseman (Seidenberg)
4. Get John MacLean to be the coach
5.
And Madden?
That ship has sailed sorry to say it.

How has it sailed?
Multiple players that leave NJ tend to come back after a few years. Madden will be a free agent next year (2.75 mil contract). With a mediocre season with 10G-13A, and his age (he’ll be 38 in a week), the Devils may have a good chance to pick him up for a good price. He and his family will spend their summers in NJ, and with an organization that treats their players well in NJ, no ship is sailed for Mad Dog Comeback Tour 2010
by Matthew Ventolo on Apr 30, 2010 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions
I think it’s more about his fading abilities than any problem with actually bringing him back. He did seem a bit crestfallen when NJ chose not to re-sign him, but that’s nothing that can’t be overcome… it’s not like it was a bitter event filled with lawyers, harsh words and yo mama jokes.
I, for one, was not all that upset about his leaving because as much as I love(d) the guy and as much as it’s hard to split from guys who’ve been around the team seemingly forever (I was just as sad to see Brylin go, even though I knew it was the right thing to do) and contributed so much through the years through their blood, sweat and tears, the simple fact is he’s not the player he once was.
This past season he was 10-13-23 on the high-flying Blackhawks (he was 7-16-23 the year before on the not-quite-so-high-flying Devils). He was a -2 against relatively weak QualComp (-0.002). The goals against did go down when he stepped onto the ice (fell from 2.53 to 2.19), which is to be expected, but so too did the goals for (fell pretty drastically from 2.94 to 2.29 when he steps on the ice). There’s a similar pattern with Shots Allowed (23.2 to 21.3 when he is on the ice), and also Shots For (30.7 to 28.7 when he is out there).
He did raise his FO% to 53% though, which is always handy to have.
I think the point is that this team needs to get younger (it was the second or third oldest team in the league this season) and needs to get faster. Madden is getting neither and though he may be serviceable on the fourth line and in spot duty on the PK for a year or two, I think that spot would be better filled by a younger free agent with more to prove for the same low price (if not cheaper), or one of the kids coming up to get his experience.
"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." -Mark Twain (?)
But Madden wasn't even offered a contract
Why would he spend money we desperatley need to sign Madden when we could’ve done that last year? And at the younger age. And plus he loves it in Chicago. He loves Kane and Towes on that team.

Reply to both elesias and RolliePollieKovy
I do agree this team needs to get younger. I would love nothing more than to see Pelley, Zharkov, Corrente, and even Palmieri to be full time players. But, center is going to be another issue this off-season just like last off-season was (Lou did it again with signing Nieder and McAmmond) Are Ben Walter and Tim Sestito (whom by the way, both their contracts are up) ready to make the move up? Actually center should be the position most crucial this off-season (Pelley, Niedermayer, McAmmond, Walter, and Sestito are FA’s). Does Lou resign youth, get new youth, resign old, get new old? I have no doubt Madden is on Lou’s list especially since Martin and Kovy are top priority.
Do you think he was worth 2.75mil this year? IMO, I don’t think so. Madden is probably worth 1.5 (2.0 at most) next season. If Lou makes some big-time signings, he may need to go into this direction if he fails to re-sign the centers mentioned above(I know..big IFs). Madden did have a -0.002 Qualcomp, but his Qualteam was also -0.185, so that -2 doesn’t look as bad. His 53% FO% is something I like for the 3rd even 4th line. (Nieder was 50.6%, McAmmer was 45.5%). He would be a role player, do his job, and most likely do it well.
Do I think it will happen? I feel a lot has to happen, but it’s not sailed, especially since the youth at center needs to be resigned.

I see him re-signing with Chicago, or if they go all the way, maybe ending his career on a high note.
He’s just not suited to play a 3rd line role any more, as his numbers show.
"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." -Mark Twain (?)
Agree with both comments above.
No doubt Lou wants to get younger. I mean one of those (Walter and Sestito) will probably have a good chance of getting the 3rd line role if we don’t sign Nieds or McAmmond. I would like it to be Sestito. He’s been playing well in the minors for Edmonton and Jersey and he’s itching to get into the NHL for a long time. He picked up some points for us too.

I'd be more satisfied with
Volchenkov then Plekanec. I’m more concerned about the defense right now.

We need defensemen that can play 25 minutes per night and do a damn good job. Mottau is gone in my book, even Martin if it means more cap to sign players. Hamhuis is physical and a good all-around d-man, Volchenkov is a great shut-down defenseman, but right now, it’s defense by committee, and that just doesn’t work anymore…
What do you mean?
Defensive defenseman have been passed in the NHL? Hamhuis is the cheaper pick by the way.

Let Kovy walk.
Just doesn’t make sense to give this guy the world when he really hasn’t shown enough to make a well informed decision. 7.5;8;and any thing above that is simply too much for this guy. Anton Volchenkov; Joe Corvo; Pavel Kubina are some players that the Devils could look at to improve thier defense, that is if Martin dosen’t resign and actually make 2011 a year to remember indeed.

Do we know for sure that he’s asking for the world? His agent said as much and Atlanta offered him as much, but that very well could have just been a ploy to get out of Atlanta without anyone looking like a bad guy (except maybe his agent).
If he continues to seek $10m+, then he has to expect that there are probably just a handful of teams that possess the right combination of cap space, need for a player of his abilities and a GM willing to sink that much of their future cap space into one player. In all likelihood such a team is building or rebuilding… which, having just left a team in perpetual rebuild mode, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t want. I see him in more of a Hossa situation where he’ll take a decent offer if it’s on a team he thinks has a chance to win now.
No one but Kovy knows what his priorities are (and things like stability for his family, winning now, being the most important player on the team and money might all factor in), but I’m in the camp that believes that he has a plan and has been following it. My prediction is that he’ll sign a nice, but not ridiculous (in amount or years), contract with a team that has some rough talent but hasn’t put it all together yet, like the Kings.

Personaly, I think that it has less to do with money and more to do with the factors that you mentioned, namely; being on a competitive team, a change of scenery/location and being with his family. I don’t see him taking less then 7-6 million a year. I don’t fully understand the Cap system yet but after a little bit more study maybe I can see the logic in all of this more better.

Kovy didn’t want to continue playing for a losing organization. Truth be told, I don’t think the $10+ million offer from Waddel was anything more than a “Not even if we offer XXX money, you wouldn’t stay” move to save face. But that’s just an opinion of mine.
I’m sure he and his agent would listen to $10 million offers, but they’re likely going to maximize earning along with potential for success. They’re probably not going to consider big offers from rebuilding organizations unless those are the only teams making serious offers.
I honestly can’t begrudge someone like Kovalchuk looking for big dollars since they may not have another chance to get that much money again – the large contract alone would justify how well-regarded he is in the league. Given that there’s not that many players who regularly shoots well above 10% and often scores 40-50 goals, he can command it – so why not demand it?

Agreed, however, as someone who does not earn a 7 figure salary I find it difficult to grasp how, in the grand scheme of things, making $5m per year is really any worse than making $8m per year.

Its a big difference for (sports) stars.....
You go from a Staal contract which is 4 million kinda like 5 to a Gaborik with 7.5 million.

I think...
he was looking at it from an individual player’s perspective. If you’re making $5M, from someone who might make that much in 50 (that’s FIFTY) years making $100K, which is a nice salary in its own right; Isn’t $5M enough? I know if I made $5M for just ONE year, I’d be able to retire. Shoot, probably only 2 would do it. And to make $100K for 50 years, I’d have to work until I was like 90-95.
That’s one of the main problems with most professional sports; greed; making and wanting more than extremely enough.
Go Jets
Go Devils
Well, they don’t get to keep all that money. Taxes, fees, bills, etc.
Moreover, it’s not so much an issue of “I need X amount of money to live” but more of a “How much do you value a player of my skills?”
Moreover contracts never come in a vacuum. What Kovalchuk will take will surely be used all over the place in negotiations in arguing salaries for other players (E.g. “Kovalchuk didn’t earn this, why should you” or “My client did X Y and Z better than Kovalchuk, he should be paid more,” etc.). Kovalchuk can take whatever he wants, but his peers in the union are expecting him to take something resembling market value.

I don’t see any particular reason to worry about "the next goalie" while the current one is just fine.
Very true, but we all share those responsibilities… the key is not to live beyond your means.
I get it, but I don’t get it. If that makes any sense. Without getting into a rant about how ever-increasing player salaries isn’t a sustainable business model, it just doesn’t make sense to me how, once someone is making millions of dollars, the first number in front of all those zeroes really makes much of a difference.
"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." -Mark Twain (?)
If he wants that money....
Then he will have to go to a non contending team… Theres no way that teams like Chicago, San Jose, or even Vancouver can afford his 10 million dollars. Hopefully I’m right and that he takes a so called pay cut from 10M to about 7.5 to 8 million.

I doubt its that much about the money for Kovalchuk as its been said that it is..
had it been he would have stayed in Atlanta the offer he got there is better then what any other team would offer. He wants two things more than anything hockeywise a Stanley Cup and good stable team.
