Should We Really Keep Kovalchuk?

Ilya Kovalchuk

As July 1st begins to approach us, I begin to ponder about if we should or shouldn't resign Russian Super Star, Ilya Kovalchuk. In my past articles, I have written that I would rather let him go, but now I am contradicting myself, saying we should resign him.

My first reason to oppose signing him is the salary cap, as we have to lockup franchise player, Zach Parise next year.  Add to that, we have some big contracts to unload to make the signing of both players possible. Is it really possible to bury Rolston's contract: NO, find a taker for White's heavy contract: NO. Plus add to that, Rolsoton is over 35 so we can't get rid of his salarycap hit by sending him to the minors, and he has a NTC. White also has a NTC. Or, even Zubrus who has a pretty big contract that is bigger than his value? Don't get me wrong, I love the way Zubrus plays, as he always fights hard to dig the puck out of corners etc, but at 3.4 million, he is not very cap friendly.

Then you look at the opposite. As you look around at the past Stanley Cup Champions, you see that each of the past teams had to bona-fide superstars. This past year in Crosby and Malkin. The year before that with the Wings having Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. If we resign Kovalchuk, we have two stars, Zach and Ilya.

Do we sign Kovalchuk long term with Parise, and start a new Devil's Culture? A culture in which offense is more stretched out then it is now?

In the comment section, tell me what you think.

SHOULD WE RESIGN ILYA KOVALCHUK?
