ILWT Audition: What the Young New Jersey Devils Could Become
Over a week ago, I put out the call looking for new writers for In Lou We Trust to write about the New Jersey Devils. I've opened up the audition to the community at large in order to get a new perspectives and additional voices on the front page with regularity. Since then, I've received seven entries and I thank each one of them - you know who you are - for stepping up and making an entry.
Throughout this week, I will post each one under an anonymous name so you can discuss and critique the post without regard to who actually wrote it. I can ensure you that I did not change any of the content outside of formatting it in to the SBN platform and fixing spelling errors. To that end, please note that I don't necessarily agree with what the posts actually say. I'm just letting them stand on their own. Please be constructive in any criticism and do offer your thoughts about whether you liked the post in addition to discussing it's content.
The fifth entrant comes from Writer E user mtorino75, who has written a piece focusing on immediate future of the New Jersey Devils. The focus is on both young players and prospects in the system we could be seeing soon. Is there a reason to look forward to the future, or rather should we hope for the best now given an uncertain future? Writer E User mtorino75 makes the argument after the jump.
As fans of the New Jersey Devils, most of us have been watching the team for years. We know what Patrik Elias has been for this team and what his role could become in the future. We've watched Jamie Langenbrunner evolve from role player to captain to pariah. Zach Parise and Travis Zajac have grown up before our eyes and we pretty much know the maximum of what they'll become. Will Travis be Gretzky and Zach Jagr? No, but they could become one of the top tier offensive duos in the league or the next A-Line if they can find a good enough right wing. But what about those that haven't scratched the surface on their potential? What about those that we haven't seen yet?
First is one of the most polarizing Devils since I've been a fan, David Clarkson. His ceiling may not be as high as someone like Milan Lucic, who could very well be a 30 goal scorer and enforcer, but he'll probably turn into something more useful than he is now. The thing is that the Devils may just not be the right team for him. As much as I'd hate to say it, he fits better on Philadelphia. The rough and tumble Flyers would maximize Clarkson and use him to his full potential. There's also the chance to play with other truculent players if he's traded to the Leafs to play for Brian Burke. But the Devils are more of a finesse team and someone like Clarkson who can't skate and whose main offensive weapon is an embarrassing wraparound may just not reach his potential here. He just may be a poor man's Randy McKay in the new NHL.
Next is 2009-10's revelation Andy Greene. Was it Jacques Lemaire's system that just brought out Greene's best or did he just figure it out? I think Greene was finally shown how to show some sort of defensive responsibility in a system that requires it under Lemaire as opposed to Brent Sutter's system that focused more on offense. It's possible that Andy just focused on his offense in that system and didn't really learn anything. But then the World Championships get thrown in and Greene was mediocre by any standards, logging the 5th most minutes of the US's defensemen. So right now, he appears as a wild card, but we'll deal with that if Paul Martin leaves as Greene's contract runs until next year.
Then there's the curious case of the Swedish prospects Mattias Tedenby and Jacob Josefson. There's been praise heaped upon Tedenby for his tremendous Pavel Bure-esque potential but there's also been a troubling comparison drawn because of his somewhat spotty inability to finish: Maxim Afinogenov. Lindy Ruff once proclaimed that Buffalo had found its Pavel Bure but they didn't count on what Sabres fans have called the logo seeking missile. He just shot it at the goalie's chest, like something out of NHL 10. Like Tedenby, he had all the moves to get to the goalie but he couldn't put it through. While Tedenby has all the moves, it's just not known how well he can finish yet. There's tremendous boom or bust potential. He could be Bure or he could be Maxim Afinogenov. Let's hope he goes boom and has some sort of aim on his shots.
Josefson seems like the more safe pick. Some say he's the next Zetterberg but at least he has the leadership capabilities for sure. He'll likely be a third line center at worst and a strong second liner at best, unless he surprises everyone a la Hank. When you're playing in a men's league when you're 18, it means your probably something special. Maybe it's just me, but I have more faith in someone like him than Tedenby. The Afinogenov comparisons scare me to death.
Then there are guys like Alexander Urbom, Brandon Burlon and Jeff Frazee that just seem like wild cards at this point. Urbom's had a great last year but really who knows with him. There have been a ton of young guys who have impressed throughout the NHL and just flamed out. Look at guys like Dan Blackburn with the Rangers and Patrick Stefan. They got there early and didn't do anything. Don't let one training camp fool you. Burlon seems to be doing alright at college but really who knows at this point. Frazee seems to alternate between awful and good years but again, he's a wild card as well.
All we as Devils fans can do is hope at least some of these guys blossom to form a solid, homegrown nucleus like the one we had a decade ago. Free agency seems to have clouded Lou's mind but hopefully he'll get back to his old business of developing great players. Maybe that reloading starts with these guys or Eric Gelinas or even Mark Fraser. Because if it doesn't we're in trouble.
Editor's Note: The above was written by Writer E user mtorino75. Now it's your turn. What did you think of the piece? Do you share the author's concerns about the Devils' future? Do you think Mattias Tedenby is a player who should be considered like Maxim Afinogenov, someone who had a good NHL career? Is there anything about the post itself you liked or didn't like? Would you like to see more of this writing at ILWT? Please leave your thoughts in the comments and remember - be constructive, not destructive.

This is a pretty negative assessment overall. The only thing I could take from it was Josefson was the best thing we have in the system and Adam Henrique isn’t even mentioned at all. Mark Frazer is a stay at home defender type and you can only have so many of them on a team. They are usually paired with a more talented defenseman who can carry the puck up ice and help out the forwards. We used to have defenseman that could do that but they all left and were never truly replaced (Yes, Paul Martin is good and so is Greene but Brian Rafalski and Scott Neidermayer they are not). Quite frankly if we had a defense full of Mark Fraser types our defense would be pretty slow and unable to provide offense of any kind. Eric Gelinas is very far away from playing on the Devils, I have read that he is a good 3 or 4 years away from possibly being ready for the big club. Mark Fraser types serve a purpose with every club but you need speed and skating ability on D as well, something those types don’t provide. Eric Gelinas is proving to be something much more although, as I mentioned, he is a long way off from making the club.
I heard second line potential Tedenby. In everything I have read about him I never heard him once being compared to Bure. Do you have a link? From his assessment on Hockey’s Future they said Martin St. Louis potential which is pretty good in its own right but Pavel Bure? I just don’t know about that. I even heard he is skating reminds people of Scott Neidermayer if he was to play forward. Josefson and Tedenby both played limited minutes with their respective clubs because it was known they were coming to North America which in turn would keep their point totals down. Where did you read that Tedenby had a hard time finishing?
I am not saying every one of the players coming along through the system will stay with the Devils, it all depends on what the Devils need and what the Devils need that can be filled by trading some of these players. However, I am pretty sure everyone of them will be given the chance to impress. Look at Bergfors, he was given 5 years to make the club and did. He didn’t stay with us but he was one of the players that brought us Kovalchuk and if we can sign him him then I would be pretty happy with Bergfors development.
Alexander Urbom has improved quite a bit in just his one year since he was drafted. He was drafted as a defensive stalwart and in a short period of time he has proven to have some offensive tools as well. Did it help that he played on a powerhouse team last year year? Absolutely. Will his development suffer playing in Albany (assuming that’s where he goes) next year because he won’t have the excellent supporting cast? I doubt it, he has already proven to me and others that he has the talent to play the game and play it well. As he continues to mature, so will Urbom’s game. He is going to be a good player some day and I look forward to seeing him grow up in the system. Getting him in the third round was a nice catch by the Devils.

I can’t say I really got into this piece. I didn’t see much of anything in the way of new ground being broken, or my being told something I didn’t already know and read elsewhere…. as if the author didn’t wish to offend someone by putting forth a strong opinion that others might disagree with.
Mind you, that style is not always a bad thing: a “just the facts” sort of writing style can work well for reporting on that night’s game, or for a recap of a trade. I just don’t know how well it works for a more editorial piece, which this article seems to want to be. In the very least, it doesn’t work for me. Just saying.
Yeah i found this very poorly speculative there’s nothing backing up any of the claims made here. They’re just thrown out there like their authoritative fact that’s been previously reported with nothing to back anything up. Even if you’re stating an opinion, you need to back up why you’re saying what you think.
• When did David Clarkson become the most polarizing Devil player? He doesn’t fit how? The Devils have ALWAYS had a player like Clarkson on the roster.
• The Afinogenov thing was off base. While no, he never turned into Pavel Bure, and no he never even scored 30 goals in one season, one of the biggest issues with Afinogenov was that he couldn’t stay healthy. Has Tenedby remotely had a history with injury? No. He’s an 18-19 year old kid who is still developing. Afinogenov when healthy may not light the lamp but as proved last season, can be a very complimentary scoring winger.
• When and where was Josefson called the “Next Zetterberg”?
• I’m sorry but Parise-Zajac and the right right wing could develop into a top line? Last i checked they were a top line with Langenbrunner when they weren’t constantly shuffled. Regardless of Langenbrunner’s lapses as captain at the end of the season, the three together always got the job done. They were strong as always when together this year and in 2009 THN even voted them the #2 line combo in the league. Zajac and Parise aren;t awaiting a special right winger, they’ve played as an elite line with a variety of RWs, be it Langenbrunner, Clarkson or Zubrus.
Agree about the level of opinion vs. fact as othes alluded to.
Something I thought of while reading the comments that probably would have been worthwhile to include in all the writers’ posts. Some of them, obviously, were better than others, a couple seemed like they could have used a little more research. So what I think could have been useful, was a poll asking whether we all thought the article would be more suited as a “Story” vs. just a “FanPost.” As FanPosts, nobody expects a deep level of research, or even if it’s not there, as acasser indicates, reads as an editorial, it’s perfectly OK. But as a main-line Story, we expect more. I’m sure that’s the case and at least one of the conditions John considers when promoting a FanPost to the front page. Now, that’s John’s choice, but whichever writer(s) get “hired” to be regular authors, their stuff could/would go directly to the front page, so it would (seem to) have certain standards to meet. While a poll by everybody here wouldn’t necessarily guarantee that the post is front-pageable, it wold probably have helped John make some decisions…
Go Jets
Go Devils
Originally, the plan was to put a poll with each post to determine whether it was suitable or not, but I decided against it because I was more interested in commentary as a response than a simple “I like this/I didn’t like this” vote. Something exactly like Zelepukin’s comment was an example of this – it points out what was lacking and highlights what the writer should focus on.
Whoever gets selected will be writing for the front page, so the whole point of the audition was just that – give me an example of what you would write on the front page and tell me what you want to focus on. I’m not going to say what decisions I have made, but let’s just say I’ve made a few.

This piece lost my interest as soon as the author talked about how Clarkson didn’t fit in. The author’s reasons were purely based on opinion, and even though the author speculated that Clarkson can turn into something more, he is still somehow not going to fit into this team.
What exactly is this team about? I thought toughness was part of our equation as everyone keeps harping about toughness.
I didn’t really bother to read the rest of the article in detail, as it repeats the same type of drivel over and over in different ways. This is definitely an article I can do without on the main page.
