ILWT Audition: If Paul Martin returns to the New Jersey Devils, What About the Rest of the Defense?
Over a week ago, I put out the call looking for new writers for In Lou We Trust to write about the New Jersey Devils. I've opened up the audition to the community at large in order to get a new perspectives and additional voices on the front page with regularity. Since then, I've received seven entries and I thank each one of them - you know who you are - for stepping up and making an entry.
Throughout this week, I will post each one under an anonymous name so you can discuss and critique the post without regard to who actually wrote it. I can ensure you that I did not change any of the content outside of formatting it in to the SBN platform and fixing spelling errors. To that end, please note that I don't necessarily agree with what the posts actually say. I'm just letting them stand on their own. Please be constructive in any criticism and do offer your thoughts about whether you liked the post in addition to discussing it's content.
The seventh and final entrant comes from Writer G Tom "Wingfan122" Stivali, who has written a piece focusing on Paul Martin. I assure you, I had nothing to do with it. Writer G Stivali looks at what the Devils defense could look like should Martin re-sign with the Devils, as well as the immediate future of the blueline.
As John has pointed out, Paul Martin is the most effective free agent defenseman on the market. The problem is a lot of other teams probably realize that as well. This article will touch upon Martin, his market value and what type of contract he would sign should he stay with the Devils and the implications of his new contract on the rest of the defensive corps over the next two seasons.
Martin, at under 30, will probably be one of the few defenseman who command a deal that is more than 4 or 5 years (I would also put Hamhuis and Volchenkov in this category) and depending on the length I think we can safely assume that his cap hit around 5.25-5.75MM per year. This would place him in the top 15-20 paid defensemen in the league. If Lou wants Martin back that's what it will probably take. The only way the cap hit will be lower is if he goes the Hossa route and signs a very long term deal. I am not a fan of these deals as they become giant albatrosses at the tail end of the contract.
Let's say Martin resigns, what then?
For the next two years, the Devils have Bryce Salvador and Colin White locked up for $5.9MM combined per CapGeek. Assuming they are both on the roster they will serve as our 4/5 defensemen. Martin will average $5.5 so the Devils will have almost $11MM locked up with our 1/4/5 spots filled for the next two years.
Andy Greene at $737,500 and becomes a FA the following year. Based on last year's performance I think we can assume he will be a serviceable 3 spot on the defense for at least one year with the probability he will be a UFA that will not re-sign in the offseason unless it is for around $3MM. If he has another positive year like 2009-2010, I can see a team overpaying for his services (I am looking at you, Rangers).
Options for the #6/#7 (#8?) Spots for the next year/two years:
1. Mark Fraser
2. Anssi Salmela
3. Matt Corrente
4. Tyler Eckford
5. Matt Taormina
Wild Card: Alexander Urbom
Unless he is moved or not qualified, Fraser will probably be penciled in the bottom pairing. The problem with that is you are essentially blocking Corrente. If possible there should be a 6/7 split between the two plus a rotation to give other players a breather. Fraser had a lot of positives in his game but New Jersey should to give Corrente a chance, as he brings a toughness and talent combination to the ice that we currently do not have.
While both Eckford and Taormina (more so Eckford) have proven themselves to a certain degree in Lowell, they play a similar game to Salmela; so assuming he is healthy, he will probably stay on the Devils roster. Taormina, according to Hockey Future likes to shoot. A lot. I wouldn't be shocked if he broke camp with the team. If Lou made an effort to sign him to a two-way deal late last year, maybe John MacLean saw something he liked. Maybe he can be what New Jersey may wanted Cory Murphy to be.
If Salmela is not ready for the opening of the season then I would think Eckford or Taormina should get a chance. This will give the roster a bit of flexibility and an Eckford/Taormina can work the 2nd power play unit. In 2011-2012, unless Anssi really picks up his game Eckford or Taormina should slide into Anssi's spot in the lineup.
Salary Amounts Dedicated to Defense (Salaries from CapGeek):
2010-2011
1. Paul Martin - $5.5MM
2. FA Acquisition/Trade Deadline Pickup
3. Andy Greene - $737,500
4. Colin White - $3.0MM
5. Bryce Salvador - $2.9MM
6. Mark Fraser - $650,000
7. Matt Corrente - $821,667
8. Anssi Salmela - $612,500
Total Allocated to Defense (current): $14,221,667
Percentage of Cap (based on an assumed cap ceiling of $60.8MM): 23%
2011-2012
1. Paul Martin - $5.5MM
2. FA Acquisition/Trade Deadline
3. FA Acquisition/Trade Deadline
4. Colin White - $3.0MM
5. Bryce Salvador - $2.9MM
6. Mark Fraser - $800,000
7. Matt Corrente - $950,000
8. Tyler Eckford - $900,000
Total Allocated to Defense (current): $14,050,000
Percentage of Cap (based on an assumed cap of $62.8MM): 23%
One problem with the Devils current roster (both the NHL club and now Albany) is the glut of 2nd/3rd pairing guys that we have. From what Gulitti has posted at times and from Hockey Future's write up of Alexander Urbom, maybe he can be a second pairing guy that we stretch out to a first pairing type of player. Otherwise if the Devils want to play hockey in June they may have to forgo getting a second line center and build up on defense in the free agent market. It is something that Lou hasn't had to do much over the years (having Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermeyer made it easy for him) and there is currently not a great market out there on July 1st; they may have to overpay a Volchenkov or a Corvo. A solid #2 defenseman will also take some pressure off of the rest of the defensive corps and not make the Devils rush anyone into the lineup to play big minutes before they are ready.
Spending a quarter of your salary cap or more is something all 4 conference finalists did and what many other successful clubs have been doing for a few years. The Devils have never been a big FA player with defenseman, but now is the time for them to step up if they want to be playing in June.
Editor's Note: The above was written by Writer G Tom Stivali. Now it's your turn. What did you think of the piece? Do you think the Devils should be willing to commit more money to the blueline in addition to re-signing Martin? Do you like what the prospects could become; or is it too optimistic to think about them? Would you like to see more of this writing at ILWT? Please leave your thoughts in the comments and remember - be constructive, not destructive.

Good post
But if Martin wants 5.5 million, no thanks. The Devils succeeded without him throughout the year. Not saying Martin is a bad defenseman but with 1 million raise for a guy that only played 22 games, there would be better “cheaper” assets on defense. You mention Eckford. I don’t know when he will be ready if it this year or next year. Taormina I think needs to work with Stevens more about defense, if he likes shooting he must know how and when to get back on defense. Fraser will be a liable defenseman in the future and maybe next year. When you look at the FA defense class of 2011 it is full of talent. I would sacrifice Martin and get a center and a cheaper offensive defenseman and let a couple kids get in the roster. But if Martin takes about 5 million, it would be a different story.

You do realize Martin’s been playing for a number of seasons in NJ, right?

Good post overall, but I think you should have tried to expand on the possibilities of what/who #2 could be. Personally, I’d like to see the Devils go back to 3 puck-handling/stay-at-home pairs. As John pointed out here while limited in time, Martin and Salvador performed extremely well together. So perhaps some investigation of what the defense corps would look like moving Bruce up the depth chart:
Martin-Salvador
Greene-White
PuckMover#3(Salmela?)-Fraser/Corrente/Eckford
I believe that might be a more than acceptable group.
Go Jets
Go Devils
I am all for signing Martin, but if it costs us 5.5.-6 million and maybe keep us from getting a center like Lombardi or even Koivu I would focus on the center. We have up and ready defenseman like Fraser, Salmela, and Corrente. And we would have money to say go after Corvo, Tallinder, or Colaiacovo. For a much cheaper price. I know Martin has been here, but when you have to pay 5-6 million on a defenseman that could be almost matched on the market for “cheap money” and get an effective center which would you take? Here would be my lineup as if we sign a center and a couple defenseman…..
Parise- Zajac- Langenbrunner
Kovalchuk- Koivu- Elias
Rolston- Zubrus- Clarkson
Leblond- Sestito- Zharkov
Colaiacovo- Salvador
Fraser- Greene
White- Salmela

I like the Colaiacovo Salvador pairing two former Blues dmen. I do realize they never played together and Cola is originally a Make Belief (Maple Leaf).

I would think anyone either Martin, Greene, Salmela, or a FA defenseman that likes offense would be paired with Salvador. Stay at home defenseman.

I really think that the Devils need more of an upgrade now on the back end. I think Martin needs to be signed (and dont think he will command more than $5 million), and we still need to sign another UFA Defenseman (Joe Corvo perhaps?) in the Top 6. I like the pairings stated by FrankG929 and the thought process that took us to our previous titles
Martin – Salvador
Corvo – White
Greene – Salmela/Eckford
Hey if we can get Martin and Corvo and still have room for a center, I am all for it. But if will take away the likes of Lombardi, Koivu, Cullen, or any other 2nd line center, then no.

Im with you on that RPK, getting Martin signed along with Corvo is dependant on getting a 2nd Center. But for me, Im letting Kovy go. We have some $16 million (if not a few million more depending on Final Cap number for next year) to sign our players. Assuming Martin takes $5 and Corvo takes $3 million tops, that leaves $8 million. Id love to see Plekanec as number 2 C, but it will probably take at least $4.5 million to get him, leaving very little to fill out the roster.
What do you guys think of trying to bring in Plekanec and Corvo?
Not well of either Plekanec or Corvo, really.
If the Devils are going to splash the cash for a #1 center, then I’d rather go big and spend it all on Marleau who’s Parise-like at center than put it on Plekanec. Corvo’s not all that impressive and the Devils can do better for a #4/#5 spot.

Defense for me
I can’t see the Devils springing for a center in FA. I would rather spend on D in free agency (or bring in a guy via trade) and bring in a cheap center and re-evaluate at the trade deadline. Ideally Josefson/Henrique can fill the 2/3 line centers in 2-3 years. Once Zajac comes up for another contract renewal he should command $4-$5MM a year and signing Plekanac or Marleau would probably prohibit us from doing that. I would rather beef up the defense and have that be the core of the team, but I think we will get a better sense of our FA situation once the coach is hired.
Couldn’t the Devils sign a decent #2 or even a #3 center for say 2 or 3 years. In 3 years Zajac and the FA center would be free agents, and you reassess both players, then only sign one of them. Josefson and Henrique have their 2 or 3 years of development now, getting a few games in the NHL each season, maybe even centering the 3rd (Henrique) and/or 4th(Josefson) lines by now. Josefson would be ready for a promotion to the 2nd line; either Zajac or the FA Center would cover the 1st line; keep Henrique at 3rd line; Have the 4th line center be the next best prospect player. It wouldn’t jeopardize the cap for the top 2 center positions. Henrique’s contract end after the 2011-2012 season, Josefson after the 2012-2013 season.

If it costs us Kovy to get a Martin, Corvo, and a good center I am up for it.

Martin at $5.5m/yr seems reasonable. Maybe a NMC could cheapen that to $5.25m/yr. It’s definitely possible to sign Martin in that price range, sign a center (Lombardi) for around 4m/yr, and obtain another defender at around 3m/yr. Do the Devils get a big stay-at-home guy to compliment Martin or a speedy power play specialist that can handle the puck well for the other FA defensemen? Which prospects of these respected roles are ready to get promoted and excel?
by Matthew Ventolo on Jun 13, 2010 8:46 PM EDT reply actions
My concern with Martin is his durability and a seemingly slow recovery time. I like Paul but i don’t know if he is worth 5 million with his injury issues. I would much rather keep a elite scorer on the wing in Kovy for a couple million more than throw money at an injury prone dman. I do believe Martin is still our number one dman and our powerplay fell apart with him out. Just if i had more faith in him staying healthy i’d be much more willing to keep him. Hopefully i’m wrong and he can stay healthy from here on out.

He broke his arm in October, and surgery was initially not needed. He had a setback in December (the bone wasn’t healing properly as doctors expected), so he went under the knife to get a plate and screws inserted. Setbacks happen, and this was unfortunate. Martin’s injury has been the only significant one in his professional career. He’s played 70+ games in every season with the Devils except last season. I find it hard to define that as a durability concern/injury issue. Brodeur missed 50 games in 2008-2009 (that was with no setbacks either); does he have injury issues?

While I think all of Eckford/Corrente/Josefson will be ready to play substantial roles in 2-3 years time, I wonder what do we do in the meantime. Can the Devils thrive while counting on Zubie to be our Number 2 Center? Id rather he play wing, as I think Elias needs to be a winger as well and not play center.
Do you guys think Plekanec will command Marleau-type money? I think his contract will be more like $5 million than the $7 million Marleau will get.
If Matt Lombardi is commanding $4 million a year, I say the Devils pass.
Why can't the Devils sign a free agent center and defenseman for say 2 or 3 years?
That’s what the Devils can do in the meantime…
I feel the Devils can spend up to $4mil/year at center. Assume the $2m cap increase: If they re-sign Martin at $5.5m/yr, Clarkson at 2m/yr. They would still have just under $7.4 in million cap space with 10 forwards, 5 defenders, and 1 goalie. That leaves plenty of room for a number of two-way contract players to make the team, and get spots on the team.
I’m not counting any two-way players (Zharkov, PL3), but it’s plenty of room to get to 23 players and be under the cap safely.

I think the article did an okay analysis of Paul Martin, although it did lean on a previous article and the reader’s familiarity with it. I also thought the article seemed a little lacking in detail on the rest of the defense corps, which surprised me given the title — I was expecting a little more. While I applaud not going overboard with the free agents and putting a couple of them in a prospective lineup, there certainly could have been a little more depth given to the minor leaguers under discussion.
The other problem I have with the article is that the cap figure for next season doesn’t look right to me (isn’t it going to be around $57 million, not $60 million?), and the figure for 2011-2012 is speculative at best. I think if a writer is going to guesstimate on salary cap figures, there needs to be some basis for them. With the economy as it is, and the NBA salary cap coming down a little bit, I see no justification for such a dramatic rise in the NHL’s cap.
I have little new to add to the “talk back” commentary above on what the defense corps should look like. Personally, I’d re-sign Martin if the price is right, but I wouldn’t expect to bring in a high-end defenseman on a market lacking them, and projecting potential lineups with one or more of them is folly (in my opinion). For that matter, the Devils don’t often dip into the expensive end of the free agency pool, and there’s little reason to think they’re about to this off-season as well.
With respect to the cap value itself, it’s rumored to be raised a couple of million. Writer G would assume that meant an increase of $2.2 million. Even if it doesn’t, all that would change is the percentage of cap being taken up by the defense. It would still be around 25% of the Devils cap even with the current salary cap ceiling, so it’s not that large of a percentage increase.

i don’t see the devils getting plekanec or marleau, nor do i think that either would be a prudent investment.
the devils need martin – 5.5 would probably be my ceiling for him. they need him because if they don’t get him, there’s not a replacement on the market for him, and there’s probably not a replacement in the organization either. to get another free agent D, he’s going to have to be overpaid, so why not overpay the guy you know, and who’s relatively young?
No. The decisions have been made by me. The point of the showcase was to see how the writing would be received, really.

Martin will be overpaid
Personally, I like Martin, but not for what he’ll command. Maybe if they could get rid of overpaid guys like Salvador and White, but White has a NMC. Salvador is White, before the eye injury, so I think Lou keeps him.
I say save some money and sign a guy like Kurtis Foster, and work the young guys in under the tutalage of Stevens. Fraser looked pretty good, Eckford has NHL talent, and Corrente needs to be given a shot. Both Urbom and Taormina look like good prospects, and theres more coming (Gelinas, Helgeson, Fayne, Miller and Mc Pherson).
Keep the money available to make a trade (or trades) during the season, should the youngsters fail to pan out. That’s how Martin ended up skipping the usual 2-3 years in the AHL, to begin with.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
Martin will get big money from anyone. Who doesn’t want a young offensive stud that was with a defensive organization with NJ? Only the Rangers.
