2009-2010 Devils GVS and GVC

Tom Stivali put together a nice write-up on the value of recent Devils Free Agent activity. Reading about the Goals vs. Salary (GVS) data got me curious about the rest of the Devils team and how they performed. I read the article Tom pointed to that described the calculation and pulled the Devils information for 2009-2010 from Tom Awad's All Time GVT database (John discussed that here). The article with the calculation also indicated the GVS could be calculated against the salary cap number, so I did that as well, and called it GVC. Well, the tables below have both those calculations. I used the roster listed in SB Nation here and the players' 2009-10 GVT against their 2010-11 salary/cap info from capgeek's Devils data.

There were some differences in the data looking at it by GVS and by GVC. First here is the GVS data:

I'd guess some of the names at the bottom of the list surprise some people. Martin is there mostly due to his injury. He improves to -2.7 GVS and -.7 GVC using his average seasonal GVT of 9.3.

Again, as pointed out elsewhere, generally veteran players get hurt by this calculation because they're somewhat getting paid for past performance. It probably balances out since when players are younger, they're generally above 0 and therefore sort of gaining that performance advantage for the future. Maybe, as long as Mottau's salary doesn't increase radically, he wouldn't be a bad investment. If we have to bring back either McAmmond or Niedermayer, Dean gives us more value for the dollar. Players who spent time on multiple teams (Kovy, Salmela, Skoula) have their entire 09-10 season's GVT included.

Mottau & McAmmond

Glad the numbers bear out what I was thinking in that Mike and Dean arent that bad. McAmmond certainly fits the role as 4th Line Center as far as Im concerned, and would sign for the minimum.
Mottau could be the 7th Defenseman on our team and Id be happy. Good work Frank
