TOPHS Data for Free Agent Defensemen (Plus)
As indicated in my post from yesterday on Free Agent Center TurnOvers Per Hundred Shifts (TOPHS), here is a similar study for the top TOI Free Agent Defensemen. As for Centers, I've included the top 10 and bottom 10. Again, using only players who played 20+ games. I only included the FAs that had over 20 minutes TOI per game to keep the table from becoming too unwieldy. Any special requests on where somebody ranks, just ask. One thing to note, only 10% (23 of 230) of the defensemen who played >20 games had a positive TOPHS. By comparison, 256 of the 442 forwards with >20 games played were above 0. Looks like defensemen are more prone to turnovers? I also included the defensemen who played for the Devils last season as well. Oh, and since there was this discussion about Thomas Kaberle, I included him as well.
To review my definition: What this stat really measures though is their net turnover ratio for every hundred shifts, i.e every 100 shifts the player would have netted X number of turnovers. Positive numbers mean the player would have taken the puck away this many more times than given it away. Negative numbers mean the player would have given the puck away this many more times than taken it away.
One surprise, seeing Drew Doughty near the very bottom of the rankings got me curious to see where the other two Norris Trophy nominees ranked, so I included Duncan (No Teeth) Keith and Mike Green as well.

Of the frequently mentioned FA defensemen,Dennis Seidenberg and Dan Hamhuis rank close to the top as far as puck control "risk" goes, (as njdNYG'cuse so aptly observed in the discussion about centers). Volchenkov, Tallinder, Kaberle, and Sutton rank nearer the bottom, so they would seem to be more puck control risky options.
One not so big surprise on the lower end from my point of view, Mike Mottau is the second worst ranked Devil, above only rookie Mark Fraser. Perhaps less ice time as proposed in many places here might not move him up the rankings, since this is by shift? Who knows!

Seidenberg and Hamhuis are definitely within the Devils reach this summer in terms of cap space. Thanks for the mention too. Seeing Mike Green at -1.58 and ranked 178 makes some sense because he handles the puck so much. The stat would consider him high risk but his 76 pts would make it high reward too. Guys like Fraser who don’t handle the puck as much (or as well) don’t have that high reward and aren’t desirable.
Overall, this stat makes a lot of sense. The threshold between a positive and negative TOPHS between forwards and defensemen is so vast. Kyle Wellwood had a 0.00 and ranked 264, and the defensemen threshold was somewhere between the ranks of 15 and 26. I know the ratio is around 2:1 forwards to defenders but by percentage, it concludes that forwards handle the puck better and have lower risk. This makes sense and gives the stat some backbone. It is a human influenced stat but it’s still a stat and the NHL records it. Nice work.

He’s not going anywhere… He is to young and I doubt with Colorado’s plan for the future Cumiskey has to be in those plans.
