Report: Therrien To Be Announced Devils Coach
Oh, Please Don't Be True!
William DePaoli, writer of a Penguins based blog reports after the Stanley Cup Finals, Michellle Therrien will be announced head coach of New Jersey Devils. It is reported to be for 3 years.
Great, what we needed, right. Just another defensive coach who doesn't know the new NHL. Also, many Penguin players said he hated him. I dislike this decision by Lou, but this is surely a "Lou" move.
Guess it's not Johnny McLean's time yet.

Just another defensive coach who doesn’t no the new NHL
Well he did get to the Finals with the Pens in 2008 so I guess he doesn’t know the new NHL…

Well, when you have a stacked team of Crosby, Fleury, Malkin, Staal, Gonchar, Kennedy, Letang, etc, you have god chance of making the Finals.

We have Parise, Brodeur, Zajac, Martin (hopefully), Kovalchuk (maybe). What makes this team different?

Well, were not resigning Kovalchuk. It seems clear he will wait until July 1st where a team will throw crazy money at him that we can’t match. Maybe the Kings.
I hope we resign Martin, but I feel another team will throw crazy money at him, that we can’t match.

Fool me once, okay. Fool me twice, no. I think Lou has that mindset with Martin. With the loss of Rafalski, Lou really needs to lock up Paul. Kings reportedly “out” of the Kovy sweepstakes.

That’s from Ekulund. He is most of the time wrong.
All though, it could be true as Kings may want Marleua instead…..

I know it is. We’ll never know but this could be true as Lombardi came out and said he won’t spend to much money on Frolov. If he is not spending money on Frolov for about 6 million, why would he sign Kovy for about 7-8 million? Who knows….

Because Frolov is not a world-class talent.
Kovalchuk is, hence he COULD be willing to take a gamble on him.
by Marty's Better #30 on Jun 6, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know but with Doughty and Johnson’s contracts running up and needing to sign Kopitar at some point, Kovalchuk’s price tage seems pretty hefty with a team with salary cap problems.

Kopitar has already been signed to a lengthy deal worth about 8 million,
As for Johnson and Doughty, I do agree with you there as they could face cap problems since Doughty could demand 6-7 million.
But, you never know.
by Marty's Better #30 on Jun 6, 2010 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Alright, I wasn’t sure about Kopitar. I guess Kovy will sign with a team he wants to go to, maybe it’s LA maybe it’s NJ. We’ll see.

I’m ok with that I guess.
If we don’t sign him, I can deal with the KHL signing him, and not another NHL team

Martin is not a #1, I’m sorry, I do not want him back. it’s time to get bigger at the blue line, literally and figuratively. Kaberle is a rumor, and you know what, maybe we go after a Seabrook or someone. What we have is not good enough. As for Therrein, the deal is not confirmed, and I dislike it.

Not bad
I don’t think this is a bad move at all…pens made the finals with him before he got fired and crosby and malkin were great for him so im sure parise can find ways to produce. I also think they were one of the higher scoring teams in the league. Hopefully he can lead us to the finals as well..
Thank you for that. I will post that link on article.

Well I guess this could be true. I like the signing and glad it will be announced right after the finals. Good job by Lou. Don’t rush Johnny into the job.

You can’t be picky. Therrien has already coached before and has experience in the Finals. Muller is probably next in line for the Montreal job. Haviland is still involved with the Hawks. Therrien seems right.

Well, the Devil’s team is experienced of many veterans who have “experienced” the finals, but have not make it to the third round since 2003/

Brent Sutter- Never coached in the playoffs before
Jacques Lemaire- Coached a team to the finals, not in the “new” NHL though.

I love Kovy, but his salary will cost too much and COULD prevent us from filling in needs of a second line center and a good d-man.

I really don't know how to feel about this...
I understand Johnny Mac not getting the job, but I feel getting stability as quickly as possible might be the best way. We may never see Mac coach the Devils if this is true (he’ll get an offer and take it in the next 3 years).
Anyway, Therrien has some good experience as head coach in the NHL (462 Games at 212 -182-38-30(Ties). In his two tours in Montreal and Pitt, he was a mid-season replacement (and then replaced mid-season a few years later). So this is a new circumstance for him (could it benefit?). We’ll see…
I don’t think this would be a bad move. He did a pretty good job with pit. Sometimes when a coach gets fired like he did they make a few tweecks to they’re coaching for the better. I think the players on the Devils don’t wine that much. They seem to buy into what the coach is selling right away.
By the way, does anyone know what Therrien has been doing since he got fired?
I think the players on the Devils don’t wine that much.

He didn’t whine. He didn’t like Lemaire’s constant changing of the lines. And how many of us didn’t like it either. He tried to bench him and put the C on Colin White!!!! White! Give Jamie credit. He waited after the season to say his mind. He didn’t whine, he did what us Devil fans wanted to say to Lemaire at the second half of the season.

Jamie seemed pretty mad/whiny about being sat out of a game against the Canes.
And when that happened, Jaques wanted someone to wear the “C”, so that player had right to talk to refs about play

It’s not uncommon to give someone else the ‘C’ for a game when the captain is not playing…It seems to me that White didn’t to wear it because he didn’t want to get involved in between JL and Langs with the problems they were having
by Matthew Ventolo on Jun 6, 2010 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions
He also didn’t want to wear it because Tom Guliti reported White saying he didn’t want to “disrespect” Jamie.
by Marty's Better #30 on Jun 6, 2010 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t blame Jamie for bing pissed. Jauque was making some pretty stupid desicions down the stretch.
That's no excuse
He’s still the coach. He’s still a player (captain or not). The organization is tightly knit and its chain of command is very strong. If there was a problem (which there was), you see the assistant coaches, the coach, the GM and solve it. The “no comment” period created more press than needed. We (the fans) got both stories after the season, which was nice, and though Jamie may have won (JL retired..Jamie’s still on the team), the coaches argument was may more valid.

I don’t have a problem with a coach with recent success. Whether it happens or not, I guess we all have to wait until the finals are over. Regardless of who it is, if there have been offers given and accepted, the finals deserve the headlines.
Go Jets
Go Devils
His recent success is because he was put on a team with young superstars hungry for the cup.
We have some young superstars.

Oh yeah, and for all of you who may think it is to early for Lou to hire coach because he started his search a couple weeks ago, Martin made it clear that he wants to see who the coach is before he agrees to terms with NJD, so Lou may want to find a coach quick.
Just a thought.

I keep reading . . .
that Therien wasn’t a player’s coach and that the Pens didn’t like him. Are there any direct quotes on this?
If this is the case, and I don’t thinki Hitchcock is the answer, it seems Lou thinks of what is best for the team and not individual players.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
Who cares
He coached them to the finals so hopefully he can do it with us..but I just don’t think this team is good enough and clearly isn’t hungry enough.
The coaching sagga in NJ will go on...
My prediction: The Devils will slump, and Therrein WILL NOT LAST one full season. That’s my prediction. I don’t see this team adjusting to another defensive coach. It’s one thing if you’re Chicago or Phoenix, but we have the roster to skate and score…
Yankees in baseball, Giants in football and Devils in hockey. It's that simple. I have no off-season.

I don’t see this team adjusting to another defensive coach
So the Devils just lost a defensive head coach and might gain another defense first guy and they will have trouble adjusting?

I think he meant equipment manager? All the jocks are going to end up the wrong size and there will major difficulties adjusting.
or maybe it was adjusting to post-lockout NHL?
or perhaps he believes that the Devs aren’t a defensive team and had to adjust to having a defensive coach.
I dunno. I’m still trying to figure out where the “skate and score” was hiding. This team lost because they couldn’t skate around beefy defensemen and get a puck past an average goalie.
