I want to gauge the interest in a potential advanced stat I thought of while watching tonight's game. It occurred to me when Chris Pronger took a penalty and the Hawks scored that it wasn't the first time I realized that happened in the series. I poked around the 'net looking, so if somebody knows if this exists, please let me know, because if I do tackle this, it will be a HUGE amount of work. I don't want to spend that time if a) not enough people are interested in it or b) it already exists (although I don't believe the latter is the case).
So my idea is this; I'd like to see which players are important to their team in one specific way. How often does that player taking or being called for a penalty result in a power play goal (5 on 4 or 4 on 3, 5 on 3's are muddled obviously because 2 players are in the box). One would think forwards who are penalty killers like John Madden would be high on the list, but who knows, key defensemen like Pronger are probably pretty high as well. I even have a catchy name for it if I do spend the effort, but I'll save that for the final result.
Thanks for indulging me
