Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Chicago Blackhawks won in overtime in Game 6 on a sharp-angle Patrick Kane shot to the right corner to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 and to win the series 4-2.

Jonathan Toews is the recipient of the Conn Smythe trophy for Playoff MVP. Former Devil John Madden now will get his third Stanley Cup ring, and Marian Hossa smashed a curse to win his first.

Chicago was in "win-now" mode, played fantastic hockey at both ends all season, and deservedly won the Stanley Cup over a more fortunate, slightly better Montreal Canadiens-esque team in the Flyers. Congratulations to Chicago and their supporters.

UPDATE: Here's a video of the play and the Stanley Cup winning goal by Kane, uploaded by Jefflered. Kane knew it was in and he was so, so right.

Congrats Mad-dog

What a relief that Chicago won. I was afraid at how insufferable the Philly fans would be next year if they had won. Nothing against their team, they had a great series. I may fly into Chicago for the parade, its a great city in the summer.

man when that tying goal bounced off hossa’s leg and in…i started really believing in a hossa curse.

congrats to the hawks, they’ve assembled a great team with a few great superstars but also having unbelievable depth from top to bottom. they absolutely deserved it.

I felt so, so bad for Hossa because he did nothing wrong other than be unlucky.

That Kane scored wiped it away and made it all good. Hossa’s very much like Elias in that they’re skilled up front but they can defend quite well. Good to see him get that ring and the haters can stop talking about “curses” as if Hossa was the reason why Pittsburgh didn’t win in 2008 and Detroit didn’t win in 2009.

What a strange way to end a series, let alone to win the Cup. Congrats to the Hawks, 49 years is a loooong wait. They certainly put together a great team this year and deserve it. Congrats to Madden as well.

Oh and to Flyers fans. Great season for your organization as well. 1975! (I couldn’t resist)

Congratulations to a phenomonal hockey club...

The Chicago Blackhawks deserved this Cup.

They fought hard, and played with heart every night.

For the first time in 49 years, Chicago’s hockey fans get to celebrate… And celebrate long and joyfully they should.

Oh, I almost forgot… John Madden FTW!!!!!

OH, and wait, ONE more thing… 1975!!! :D

In all seriousness, you have to congratulate the Flyers. They put a Hell of a run together and it seemed that they had a date with destiny.

No, I don’t. But I’m a hater of the Flyers.

Yeah, the Flyers fans should be glad they saw their team go this far, being on the fortunate side of beating an unlucky, rotting-from-the-inside Devils, beating a Boston team that should have kept their proverbial foot on the proverbial pedal, beating a Montreal team that was all kinds of lucky to beat Washington and Pittsburgh, and not looking so bad against a Chicago team that didn’t really play as well as they did, in my view, against San Jose.

They aren’t a bad team and they got the Finals, so it’s not as if they didn’t deserve to be there. But honestly, they weren’t as great as they were on paper and once again, their goaltending failed them. The big what-if for their fans will be, “What if Ray Emery was healthy?” Because as much as we may be in an age of goalie parity, Leighton/Boucher wasn’t a confident pairing to bet upon and I feel while most goals against aren’t soft ones and could have been prevented before the shot, Leighton gave up two awful, awful goals tonight to ultimately seal Philly’s fate.

And on top of all that, they needed a lucky bounce to even tie the game in the third period when Chicago was somewhat weathering the storm.

The old cliche of “It’s better to be lucky than good sometimes” applies perfectly to any kind of playoff and the Flyers had it up until the Finals.

Plus, don’t forget the way the finished the season and backed into the seventh spot. Funny that Langenbrunners last goal of the year ensured we played the 7 seed (flyers).

I hate the Flyers more than the Rangers. 100X more. The cheap hits, their managements crusading for the Trapezoid and their fans make them easily more hatable.

I hate the Philly fans more than the team. and the Philly team more than the Rag fans or team. At least when the Rag fans come to the rock and act so cocky, they can say that their team won something recently, if you can call 16 years recent. The F’er fans are just obnoxious. They remind me of all of the wannabe Irishmen who attend they St. Patricks Day Parade in NYC that get blasted fall down puking and pissing drunk that you keep your kids away from.

by kellyn on Jun 10, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I agree with you in principle about the Flyers having their share of good luck. However, I think where we had good luck was not in the game, but in who we drew in our rounds. The Devils were the only team in the top 4 we had a winning record against. Then somehow Montreal beat the Caps so we wouldn’t have to play the top seed. Then somehow Montreal beat the Penguins so we wouldn’t have to play our cross-state rivals. We got favourable matchups. However during the games, that comeback against the Bruins was not luck, the shutouts against Montreal were not luck and our play against Chicago, which even though we lost I’m proud of, was not luck.

I really think the team in the regular season played well below what their potential was. Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere really turned it on in the playoffs, and combined with Ville Leino (who didn’t get much opportunity in the regular season) created an amazingly productive line. Briere ended up with more points than Toews, Kane and all the other Blackhawks stars, so I hope you would excuse me for saying that he played well. Same goes with Giroux.

Anyway, I get the fact that I’m on a Devils blog, and that you (and others around here), hate the Flyers….so I won’t try and overextend my welcome. Just wanted to clarify there.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 10, 2010 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

They were definitely lucky in who they drew, but they had a little luck along the way.

The comeback against Boston was winning a battle of attrition. The Bruins ran out of productive forwards (not that they had many to begin with) and couldn’t win the one additional game they needed to to end the series. If it wasn’t luck that Krejci et al were injured and unable to play, then it was on purpose… which wouldn’t be luck, it’d be despicable. Woulda coulda shoulda, but if Boston had suffered even one less injury, who’s to say they wouldn’t have won the one game in four tries they needed?

One might even be able to argue that the Flyers being in the playoffs at all was a bit of luck as the odds of beating Lundqvist in a shootout are generally pretty low.

True, but I am getting a gnawing feeling that perhaps Lou needs to loosen the reins a little bit.

It’s based solely on hearsay from second and third hand sources and the disappointing results the past few years, and so may be entirely misplaced… but it’s a feeling I just can’t shake.

the flyers are gonna be good next year too,had they a great goalie they would have been champs.

by Imperator_Celtic on Jun 10, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps, but they’ve been saying that exact same thing for what, 15 years?

I think the regular season team underperformed and the post season team over-performed and the real team is somewhere in the middle. Don’t forget either their favorable match-ups along the way… as the Flyers fan earlier alluded to, if they’d met either Pittsburgh or Washington along the way they probably wouldn’t have gotten as far.

Besides, I don’t think Laviolette is that great a coach.

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." -Mark Twain (?)

by elesias on Jun 10, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

the current flyers team was built to not rely on their goalie. they have unbelievable (veteran) scoring depth and i think that showed in the playoffs as different lines carried them past each different opponent. they definitely benefited from montreal knocking off pittsburgh and washington but every team needs a little luck to get to the Stanley Cup. the team underperformed badly in the regular season, but remember that a lot of pundits picked them to win the East in their preseason analysis. when you look at their roster, i don’t think at all that it’s surprising that they got to the Final.

i would take laviolette as devils’ coach. his post-lockout teams have had tremendous success in the playoffs.

by dr(d)evil on Jun 10, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

the current flyers team was built to not rely on their goalie.

Considering they lost and the Cup clinching goal was a pretty soft one, that’s a fatal flaw, wouldn’t you say?

As to Laviolette, that’s debatable. He won in ’06 with Carolina, but then missed the playoffs two straight years and was on the way to missing them again a third time (12-11-2) when he was fired. With the Flyers this year he was slightly better than .500 (28-24-5) and caught some breaks to make it as far as they did.

Let’s see how he does with a full year first. I’m not ready to anoint him a good coach just yet.

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." -Mark Twain (?)

by elesias on Jun 10, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

any goalie can give up a soft goal in any game, even the great ones, and any team can lose a series with bad goaltending. there are teams that need their goalie to be great (buffalo, montreal, phoenix come to mind) and then there are teams that need their goalie to be merely good (chicago, philly, detroit), but obviously any team that gets bad goaltending is going to be screwed.

leighton had good stats before the Finals started and people will say he made the saves he needed to to help the flyers win, but at the end of the day the flyers won because as a team they outplayed their opponents and they lost because they couldn’t outplay the hawks.

it’s a good point you make about laviolette’s poor regular season record, but i think there’s a huge difference between coaching in the playoffs vs regular season. the regular season is more about getting consistent effort and production out of your players and teaching young players. the playoffs are about formulating a strategy to beat your opponent in a series and making little adjustments as the series goes on. frankly i think the devils have so many veterans who know what it takes to have regular season success that the coach matters much less to them than for other teams – but they need better tactical coaching to carry them through the playoffs.

by dr(d)evil on Jun 10, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

True enough. Problem was, they only needed him to be good, and he wasn’t good enough. They’ve had goalie problems for as long as I can remember and it’s hard now to know if they developed their team around the concept of not having to rely on a goalie to steal games or just through a culture of having no choice because they haven’t had a goalie that can steal games for them.

To Laviolette, his post-lockout post-season teams have success, true, but you’ve got to get there to have it. He made the playoffs twice in three years pre-lockout, but had little success once there (both first round losses, combined 4-8 record), and now he’s made the playoffs twice in four tries (or once in three tries if you only count fully coached seasons).

Seems to me he’s an excellent motivator, but not a great coach. He’s a guy I’d love as an assistant coach, but would hate as a head coach.

Madden

Before the playoffs started if you told me Madden would win a cup I would have been happy for him but after his recent comments I am rather indifferent about his 3rd cup win.

by Tom Stivali on Jun 10, 2010 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

Most recently, he said, "I learned more about how to play hockey in the post-lockout era this season than I did in four years in New Jersey.’

And in recent history he’s said, “This is a different type of team, too. Those (Devils) teams were pre-lockout teams. This is post-lockout. There is a lot more skill, a lot more speed. It’s totally different than any team I’ve ever played on, that’s for sure.” And was paraphrased, “But, according to the 37-year-old center, the Chicago Blackhawks are the best team in which he’s ever been associated.”

Nothing mind-blowingly offensive, but perhaps distasteful enough to turn some people off.

I agree. I think he should be a bit more appreciative of the Devils organization. They’re the ones who gave him a shot when absolutely nobody wanted him as an undrafted college hockey player. He wouldn’t be where he is today without them. I think it’s just sour grapes on Madden’s part that the Devils didn’t even make him an offer last July and just let him walk to Chicago. He’s obviously bitter about something.

by kellyn on Jun 11, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I have been thinking about what Madden said about the Devils being a “pre lockout team”. There is a ring of truth to that. Both Chicago and Philly have a defense that is big, can skate and move the puck. Can we say that about all of our defenseman?

Can you say that about the 08-09 Penguins, 07-08 Red WIngs, 06-07 Ducks or 05-06 Hurricanes? Okay, maybe the Ducks… but you get my point.

I think the knock on the Devils not being a “post-lockout team” is that people feel they aren’t aggressive enough offensively. All of the Cup winners since the lockout have been strong defensively, but also willing to take some risks.

As it stands right now, the fact that the Devils haven’t had a lot of post-season success points to there being some truth to it… but whether their steady-as-she-goes philosophy will prevail remains to be seen. Truth is, defense still wins championships. The offense can come from any philosophy, so long as it comes from somewhere.

I can’t believe the goal light didn’t come on for that. Chicago had to to win, I can never root for a Philly team, ever. We nearly got killed down there once for just wearing a Devils jersey, my father and brother shared a similar experience and we all heard about that classy individual who threw up on that girl and lets not forget about what they did to that Montreal writer during that series. The list goes on and on.

I wonder if Chris Pronger gave all those pucks back to the Blackhawks. Anyway, good on the the Blackhawks for winning. I watched three periods, I couldn’t stay up any longer. I literally had a dream that The Blackhawks won 4-3. So much so that I woke up thinking I can’t believe they pulled it off it in Philly. Then I thought, how do I know that? deja vu

looking back on it this morning, the end of t he game was awfully reminiscent of the gold medal game this year. late tying goal off a scramble in front, then an offensive star gets the game-winner early in overtime on a sharp-angle shot from the edge of the right faceoff circle. miller gets a pass because canada made a nice give-and-go to set it up and crosby probably was little closer in than kane was. leighton should have stopped that shot – he saw kane bearing down on him with the puck for a good few seconds after kane got half a step around timonen – but i’m guessing if you ask him he’ll admit he was cheating, expecting kane to throw it cross-crease or into the slot.

by dr(d)evil on Jun 10, 2010 9:20 AM EDT reply actions

That is the case.

(Kane) walked out of the corner and there was a guy driving to the net," said Leighton, who stopped 37 of 41 shots over 64 minutes and six seconds. "I thought Kane was going to pass it. He threw it at my feet and it went underneath me.
