The Beginning of Free Agency Frenzy - 2010 NHL FA Open Thread
It's been discussed to near-death for months and today will see what will actually happen. At noon today, pending unrestricted free agents will be available to sign new contracts with any team they'd like. For this summer's opening of NHL free agency, the New Jersey Devils now have a full coaching staff, management has been preparing for weeks, and have even answered their need for a second line center with the Jason Arnott trade.
And they haven't waited for July 1 to act. In fact, in the 48 hours since I put up this 2010 New Jersey Devils free agency primer, the Devils have been busy. A lot of teams have been, actually; enough to force Quisp to update his crucial Can You Afford Ilya Kovalchuk? chart at Jewels from the Crown (a must-read if you're interested in Ilya).
David Clarkson has been signed to a 3 year deal with a cap hit of $2,666,667 according to Tom Gulitti. Much of that money may be offset by the waiving of Jay Pandolfo (requested by Pandolfo) and Andrew Peters. As reported by Gulitti, Pandolfo's and Peters' respective contracts will be bought out (Self-Promotion Aside: I brought up the possibilty of buying out Pandolfo's contract back in May, though I never would have guessed he'd request it). In that post Gulitti already figured out how much money would be saved by buying out both contracts: $2 million in cap space will be saved for this season, but there will be a sunk cost of $1 million for next season as a result. If you want to discuss the Clarkson signing, Kevin's got a post on it, where the waived players are mentioned.
Tim Sestito was also re-signed according to Gulitti, but terms have not been disclosed yet. It is a two-way contract for one year, so he will only count against the cap if he's brought up to New Jersey.
As of right now, per CapGeek, the Devils have $11,373,333 million available with 17 players signed. Once the buyouts actually happen, add $2 million to that and reduce the roster size by 2. This is how much the Devils will have to play with tomorrow to re-sign current free agents prior to noon and go after new ones.
Please use this post as an open thread for all NHL Free Agency discussion. Talk about what other teams are doing, talk about what you want to see from the Devils, talk about trades, talk about how you feel about pending FAs from NJ (Though Paul Martin has his own post: Will Paul Martin stay?) and as long as it's about NHL free agency. Please follow the rules at all times, and please, please, please do not report rumors as news or fake news. Link to sources (actually link to them, don't just dump the URL in the text box and hit post - this includes Tweets); give credit to sources; and actually listen to good, reliable people (e.g. Gulitti, Chere, anyone at TSN or CBC, CapGeek, Not Hockeybuzz). This gives respect to the sources and let's everyone who's reading this know what's really up.
One last note: Remember that we only know so much of the story. UFAs have free reign to decide where they want to go and for how much. We don't know and likely never will know whether Lou made an offer, how much it was, and whether the player ever wanted to be in New Jersey. Players will want to maximize their value as they may not get the chance to do it again and/or fulfill a desire to play elsewhere. Just some perspective if someone "walks" or signs to a place you didn't expect. Thanks for reading and enjoy the frenzy. We will do our best to stay on top of the Devils-related FA news throughout the day.

My opinion.
Let Kovy go. IF resigning him means we have trouble signing Zach next year or the price to high then “bye kovy”
Paul- Martin- I would love for the man to re-sign with the team but my gut tells me he wont.
Yann Dannis- I kinda want the kid back. He has heart, skill and likes it here.
I’m really not expecting much from Lou in free agency. Hopefully he’ll just let Kovy go and hopefully we’ll re-sign Martin. After that all we really need is another top defensemen.
I don’t think Lou is gonna go after a 3rd line center because he probably wants to leave the spot open for Henrique or Josefson. And if those two aren’t ready Zubrus is perfectly capable of playing there and playing well.
I have a bad feeling we are going to have neither Martin nor Kovalchuk
I think the events that transpired over the last couple of days just give us too few dollars to work with
I like the Clarkson signing, but that was for a bit more than I think most expected. The Pando move, while good for the long term, hurts this year.
I think both are leaving.

To what events are you refering? How does the Pando move hurt? It opens $2M in cap space, essentially covering the Clarkson signing. Aside from a Unicorn deal, it was quite possibly the best move that could have been made in terms of “good for the team” and “putting us in the best position possible for the UFA period.”
Seriously and realistically, Lou will probably look at about $12M in cap space to get a top pair DMan, a second quality D, and a couple of depth postions. The third center positon is one that shouldbe well served by a prospect, there are young guys capable for the depth offense and defense positions, and Danis would love to come back and keep playing for NJ.
After signing the depth guys, you are looking at $8M-ish to basically sign a First and Second Pair DMan. Completely reasonable, Martin or not.
How does the Pandolfo (and Peters) move hurt this year? When they are eventually bought out (Pando will be, Peters most likely will be), it will open up $2 million in cap space for this year. Next season in 2011-2012, the Devils will take a hit of $1m, which isn’t a lot, but it is $1m going towards 2 players not on the team. If anything, it hurts them long term (1 year isn’t exactly long term, but you get my point).

How does the Pandolfo (and Peters) move hurt this year?
I think he meant losing someone who has been a part of the team for so long hurts emotionally. It’s hard not to feel an attachment to players who were part of the Devils during their glory days.
It’s fine to feel sad about Pando leaving, but it’s not going to hurt the team. Is the organization sad to see him go? Absolutely. Lou described the past few seasons perfectly as unfortunate. The Devils have plenty of experience and veterans, and wont be hurt by Pandolfo leaving. Plus, this was his call; he requested this. Lou could have turned his back, threw him in the minors, or eat the $2.5 and scratch him. He’s giving Pando an opportunity to play the game instead of ride the bench.

Dead money
I thought after I posted that I was not clear
Losing Pandolfo is good from the standpoint of we can replace him with a better player. but the bottom line now is that it is definitely dead money, and we need to put a new player in that slot. From my view we can only spend say $1.5 million on that player in order to keep the total cap hit below what Pando would cost
So yes, we are from one perspective better off without pando but I guess what I am saying is that we are now finally having to eat his bad contract
by Devilssection21fan on Jul 1, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions
And so it begins.
Finally we get to see what happens with respect to Illya and Martin. Two solid players, I am anxious to see hoe the Devils performance. They seem to be off to a nice star with the addition of Arnott and the fact that Pandolfo and Peters have opted out of thier contract. I think the Devils are piosed to make a big splash in the FA market and surprise us all with a devilish move that no one saw coming. This entusiaism stand regardless of whether Illya and Martin come back or not.

Devilish...Louish...same thing...
I’ve been thinking that Lou might get ugly and go after Staal with a sheet. It’s been a while since he poked at the Rangers.
In the UFA market…I wouldn’t be shocked if he went after one of the big name DMen (Hopefully not Gonchar), especially if Martin left.
Then again, he’s been shocking us often this offseason, maybe he says “Wtf!” and tosses the farm at Kovy.
Definitely going to be a fun couple days.
Indeed.
If Martin goes elsewhere, I think the Devils need to find a replace of the same caliber. If they can’t then they should go after some one who damn close to him. I don’t have any suggestions. I am sure that many of you can think of some guys. What ever the Devils do, I think all of us can agree that the defense should be consider first and the offense second but not forgetting that both are equally important.

I’d love to see one (or two!!) of Volchenkov, Martin, Hamhuis and Michalek here. Any one of the 4 would fill the #1 job just fine. Kubina costs too much, but he’s huge. Tallinder isn’t an option in my eyes, he’s just not good enough taking care of the puck, and he can’t shoot for nuttin’. Morris is a mercenary, doesn’t fit in the Devils family kind of structure. He’s decent, and I guess maybe he could find a more permanent home here? Mitchell, well, I like him, but his concussion problem scares the hell outta me at $4M a year. Johnsson for the right price if the Devs are serious about going offensive? The right price is nowhere close to his current ~$5M.
Then there’s the man-crush I have on Staal. And my deep routed desire to F the Rangers. You’d have to call the paramedics if Lou managed that one.
Kubina is 5mill (maybe more) and volchenkov already declined a 5mill signing (didnt he?), i dont want him here, we dont need him
i would love to see Frolov, Burns, Michalek, corvo here
i dont want marc staal, dont really like him, only eric staal
PS3: J-CAMPS
Way I figure it, if Martin signs elsewhere we’d need him. If you pencil in $5M for a top DMan, Martin or FA, doesn’t really matter where it goes in terms of cap. Just which guy would work best on the team.
More goals would be nice, but the offense isn’t what I’m so worried about. As of noon, the team needs a top pair shutdown defender and a second pair D. Whatever is left over after that can go to prospects moving up, a back up Gaolie, and maybe another more experienced offensive guy.
I’ll be a LOT less nervous once the D situation is settled.
Kubina isn’t making $5 mil. He got that much money because the guy who signed him to that contract was not the smartest person out there.

The only problem I foresee is a team having to start overpaying for second tier defensive free agents after the top tier is gone. So in a perfect world (for him) I can see Kubina getting close to that if he times it right.
Here is my Free Agency Day Wishlist:
Manny Maholtra
Paul Martin
Jordan Leopold
and since I touted him in my post yesterday Robert Nilsson.
Good list. I’d like Lou to at least get Martin and Malhotra (or at least one of them)

I almost think that keeping Kovy and letting Martin walk would be a good idea. I know the Devs need defense, but if you look at the talent we have right now we should be trying to move to a more offensive style. We dont have the Daneyko, Stevens, or Neidermayer anymore, but we do have Zajac, Parise, Elias. I have been thinking that we needed to move towards a little more offense for several years now and this would be a very good time to do it.
Problem is that if Martin leaves and Kovy is signed, there is no money to sign 2 Defensemen capable of logging significant high quality minutes, and the 4 guys we do have aren’t capable of covering all those minutes. Sure, we’d be able to fill the roster, but the cost would be huge in terms of capability to compete.
Devils have enough wingers under contract anyways. Why would we need another?

Well, the arguement goes beyond “need.” He’s a superstar. Is taking the chance at having a weak D worth all the stuff a superstar can mean for your team? It means attendance, merchandising, and higher offensive output. But if you can count on scoring one more goal per game with him in the lineup, do you think your D will be strong enough after the sacrifice to not let in an additional 2 per?
I guess it comes down to how mighty a step the Devils are willing to take in the Offensive direction. Lou’s comments leasd me to believe he wants to stay defensive, but there is pressure from the rest of the organization to make the superstar factor happen.
Yeah I see how keeping Kovy could cost the team. Then we also have to think about the Summer of Parise next summer and with Kovy the cao space will be tight.

Read this. It might not be the Devils, but i think the point Hildy brings up is valid for the Devils as well. The Devils have an identity, and it’s based on strong work ethic and two way players like Zach Parise and Travis Zajac. Then there’s the whole problem of the defense.

Good read, and agree completely. If I didn’t have to worry about the D, I’d be all over signing Kovy. The point made of never having to conform to a team is very valid, and his arrival here didn’t lend itself to that last year, but I believe that if he was here during the preseason, there wouldn’t be that kind of force or pressure to perform, and he would have to become part of the system. Let’s face it, the Devils are more like the Borg than any other team. We just assimilate talent and they become part of the collective.
There’s a lot he can do for a team. a lot of good things. On the ice. and off. But it comes at a cost, and right now, on this team, I think that cost is too high. But I’m not the GM or the owners. I’m not wiling to lose the Devil Defensive Identity or expose a thin D even further in favor of offensive flash, sellouts, and merch. I don’t think Lou is either, but I guess we’ll see real soon.

Why do we need to waste $8 million on a 50 goal scorer when we have players like Parise and Elias who are 30+ goal scores. Zajac, Langs, Arnott, Rolston, Clarkson, Zubrus are all capable of 15+ goals. We have all the offensive forwards we need, we just need Johnny Mac to properly use all these guys.
We also have a Tedenby who is a goal scorer that is close to coming up to the NHL.
So what is the point of signing Kovalchuk?
I think everyone wants a bonafide Superstar.

Elias will be the 2nd line LW. Jason Arnott will be playing center now.

Brooklyn
I think that’s the wildcard here. It would be tough for me (and I am a former Nets season ticket holder) to see a team that’s moving (even only to Brooklyn) in a few years even if King James goes there. Must be really tough to build marketing plans in the Nets Front Office right now.

If i'm lou i'm trying to keep martin
He is a veteran pressance in the D pairings and thought not an amazing goal scorer he has the ability.
Kovy is gone i’m almost certain of it. He is demanding to much money and like mentioned above it will cause cap space nightmares down the road for Parise and zajac. Cut him now and sign a defensemen to add depth and a physical pressence.
The devils physical play on the d side of the ice has been lacking. It showed in the Philly series. We got pushed around. Got to sure that up

No to Volchenkov: we don’t need another stay at home defenseman.
To "resign" is to voluntarily leave a position; retire. To "re-sign" is to sign again. When talking about free agents, please use the correct one.
He ran the Power Play for Russia in the Olympics, no? He is not all D. Plus he is a very good stay at home defenseman.

Parise will be an RFA, and Arnott and Langenbrunner’s combined $7.3m will be coming off the books. It’s highly doubtful Zach is going anywhere, regardless of how the team spends this year.

They’ve already had Gonchar and Hamhuis walk away from their sales pitch… could be that their pitch about the new building and Crosby walking on water and their recent Cup isn’t as strong as they think it is.

Well, he’s essentially trying to fill in Gonchar’s shoes, so it’s not like it makes Pittsburgh suddenly way better.
It definitely hurts our defensive corps, but I’m entrusting Lou foresaw this event and has a Plan B.

I wouldn't go that far....
…. what if “Plan B” is to trade for Brian Campbell? Can’t think of too many worse ideas than that.
Ditto, though he does seem to be learning. He’s done a pretty good job so far this off-season in handling the teams needs.
At least Pittsburgh is still all but wingless for their star Centers.
To "resign" is to voluntarily leave a position; retire. To "re-sign" is to sign again. When talking about free agents, please use the correct one.
Pittsburgh can find guys on the cheap to play the wing for Malkin and Crosby. After the first wave shakes out, they’ll simply nab someone with offensive upside to play on a short-term, “Make good” kind of deal. You can inflate your numbers really quickly with Crosby as your center.
True, and it’s worked to varying degrees over the past 3 years, but I think teams are figuring out how to stop, or at least slow, that set-up down.
To "resign" is to voluntarily leave a position; retire. To "re-sign" is to sign again. When talking about free agents, please use the correct one.
It isn’t the most effective way to build a roster if you place a premium on quality, but it is a very effective way to build a roster if your goal is to do it without spending silly amounts of money.
Every team has to skimp somewhere, and they’re built down the center. I see the how and the why, I just don’t think it’s the best recipe for sustained success.
To "resign" is to voluntarily leave a position; retire. To "re-sign" is to sign again. When talking about free agents, please use the correct one.

There’s no reason to fight Boogaard. Let Derek wander the ice and threaten people, because that’s all he’s good at. Derek Boogaard is a complete waste offensively, so if he isn’t fighting he has no value to a team.
I fear all he could do against Derek is get his face broken.

Let Vancouver overpay him....
…. for that matter, let some other team overpay Volchenkov as well. The defensemen are getting big money, and a lot of them are getting more money and more years than they are worth. I’d just as soon let the dust settle and pick up bargains in the second wave.
Sean Zandberg is incredibly happy that Hamhuis didn’t sign on the east coast.

If he fetches anything close to what the top-end defensemen are fetching today, he’ll be overpaid. I don’t know that he’ll necessarily fit into the system, he provides virtually no offense…. is this really the guy you want to sink $5 million into for a couple of years?

Even if he’s healthy, they overpaid. Gonchar at $5.5 million per, Martin at $5 million per? I know which one I’d rather have, even if you reversed the salary numbers.

Im beginning to think that with the coaches hired and players that the Devils currently have that Lou’s surprise may have been a switch to a slightly more offensive style team.
Then why not give 25-27.5 over 5 to a Puck moving defenseman like Martin? Someone who could thrive in such a system?

And we also have higher ceiling guys like Urbom and Gelinas that he would mentor in a few years.
Yeah, that would be great. One thing I did not like to read was this:
He doesn’t shoot very regularly and he missed the net on 31 instances, which is why he took the least amount of shots amidst all the defensemen including Andrej Sekera and Chris Butler who played far less matches than he.

With the Volchenkov deal, the D is basically set. Plus we now have a definitive spot for a rookie full time on D, possibly to be paired with Tallinder since he was praised for doing well with that in Buffalo.
Rookies can fill the other spots in the line up.
ZZpops
Kovy-Arnott-Elias (he can play either wing)
Tendenby-Zubes-Clarkson
Mix of rookies/Pelley/PL3 or even Rob Neids or McA if needed
Vol-Greene
Tallinder- Salmela/Corrente/Eckford etc

by my calculation the devils could trade zubrus and still only have about 6.2 million for kovalchuk. the only other player they could trade is salvador.
make that deal
salvador is expendable. Zubrus showed a lot of effort in the playoffs though.
I hate Philadelphia so much.
thrash make another deal with chicago
this time for ladd
So the Devs have about 5.4mill left per the CapGeek update Tom Posted. So we could get a decent third line center for way less than that and then call it day.
DItto, but he’s more suited for the fourth line. In fact, give him a two-way contract.
To "resign" is to voluntarily leave a position; retire. To "re-sign" is to sign again. When talking about free agents, please use the correct one.
So resign McAmmond and use Josefson of Henrique as a third line center? I’d be fine with that.

Plus
Next year’s cap (assuming Kovy signs for $7MM) would only have $11MM left for about 10-11 spots AND re-signing Parise. I wish Kovy well, and I think his time here is done.
Technically....
Teams can go over cap now, so they could sign Kovy as long as they dumped salary by training camp. That said, I doubt it happens. But today has certainly surprised me…..
haha that would be so funny. My brother and his friends are Redwings fans. They would not like that.

LA is awfully quiet
who else can afford kovalchuk now? if LA wanted to upgrade other parts of their team, they should have made their moves by now.
Kind of bummed
I guess I need to know more about Volchenkov but in my view we ended up spending more on two defensemen than we would have on one, and neither is as good as Martin. This now takes us out of the Kovy candidates in my view.
I know many on this forum have complained about the defense but the fact of the matter is the team still won the Jennings trophy. Our problem is goal scoring and what are we going to change that now? We are counting alot on Arnott now
I guess this also means Mottau is gone?
by Devilssection21fan on Jul 1, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions
Tallinder is a decent 2nd pairing (even called a borderline 1st pair at times) who can put up a decent amount of points without sacrificing D (24 points with a plus 13 playing with Meyers last year). Plus, in 06, his postseason play (saw it firsthand) as a shut down D man was REMARKABLE.
Volchenkov is simply one of the best shot blockers/shut down D men in the East. Not flashy, hasn’t put up many points (although he was never really used in that sense), but efficient.
No, we probably won’t get our points from the backline. But shoring up the D is better than leaving it as it is. Think about it. We’re getting Tallinder and Volchenkov for Martin AND Mottau.
Not really
what is it, 3.6 for Tallinder and 4.5 for Volchenkov?
So 8.1 for the two vs probably around 6/6.5 for Martin and Mottau.
Martin is the best of the 4, but marginally. He’s a solid d man that know what he’s doing. But, for me at least, his contributions and Mottau’s… err… “contributions” are outweighed by what our two newest devils can bring together.
So who’s our Dmen on the PP?
Greene and….. ?

unlikely. i wonder if he will be coming back after this season, though – need to make space to give parise and greene raises. he would have to be willing to take a pay cut.
what other salary could be moved?
If you look at what defensemen got on the open market today, I think Bryce Salvador becomes a possibility for teams. Two years at $2.9 million per is comparable to a lot of guys out there, and some team is bound to look for an upgrade.
Plus, with Volchenkov and Tallinder in the picture, the Devils have a glut of more “physical” defenders who couldn’t score on an empty net. White has a no-trade, so Bryce is the guy to go.

Lou said marty wasn’t going to play 70 games. I think when Lou speaks Marty listens.
I also don’t think it has anything to do with Marty forcing his way in to playing that much. I think he can carry the workload and the coaches just have him do it. If anyone watched the games last year I really don’t think he’s lost anything and wouldn’t be shocked if he plays into his 40s

What about...
a rear loaded, 3/4 year deal for Kovy? One that keeps the cap hit relatively low (although a trade to free up space will most likely have to happen).
Thoughts? He’d still be young enough to get a long, 6/7 year deal somewhere else should he want at the end of it, and he’d have a chance to play on what I see would be a really, really good devils team in the next few years.

I wanted Martin Back as a #1 priority
But Volchenkov was super close in my book as a priority. Let’s give him a chance in black and red to see what he can do. He might bring some intangibles to the team that perhaps Martin did not.
i have mixed feelings about it. when you take the 2-for-2 on its own, i agree that we’ve gotten better on the back end (costing us over 7.5 mil where the other two would have cost about 6 combined)
the concern i have is that the defense won’t be able to effectively move the puck. it’s just not a strong suit for a lot of our current guys. i’m really looking for lou to move salvador for a cheaper, more offensive Dman.

Anyone get the sense that...
Lou may be “pulling a Chicago” in the hopes of a cup and then worrying a out what to do afterwards (regarding the cap)?
the guys that the devils need to re-sign next year are parise and greene.
arnott’s contract and his big 4.5 cap hit expires after this season so that’s a good chunk of space.
langenbrunner’s 2.8 cap hit also expires.
between the two of them, there is enough space to re-sign both parise and greene. whether lou will try to keep arnott and langs, i don’t know, but we don’t have to worry about dismantling the team.
I don't know
But for some reason I really hope we can get Kovy to sign a one year deal if that is the case. The devils could be downright scary if that happens. Plus, he could still go for a huge deal next year, the devils could re-sign Parise, and even more contracts (like Arnott and Langs) come off the books and maybe we could give Kovy the money/time he wants.
and in 2012 the devils have HUGE contracts expiring – Rolston’s 5.1, Marty’s 5.2, White’s 3, and Salvador’s 2.9
And almost $24M tied up for 6 players in 12-13
