A Quick Scouting Report on Volchenkov Courtesy of Ryan Classic
After the news of the Volchenkov trade, I sent an email to Ryan Classic, one of the writers at SBNation's Ottawa Senators blog, Silver Seven about a quick scouting report on Volchenkov. He was able to give a quick writeup.
Anton is, first and foremost, a shot blocker. Since the NHL started keeping track of the stat in 2005-06, he's blocked 1023 shots; no one else has topped 900. He hits hard, but is also surprisingly disciplined: he's never put up more than 67 penalty minutes, and hasn't topped 40 in the last two seasons. While he's had some injury problems in the last few seasons, you'd be hard-pressed to find many players with higher pain thresholds. His offensive ability leaves something to be desired, but New Jersey didn't sign Volchenkov to man the power play. Because of the wear on his body, it's likely he won't be nearly as effective towards the end of his contract. If he can stay healthy, he's a great number two defenceman at a reasonable price. He's not flashy, but you'll love having him on your team. Don't expect him to do many interviews; English isn't his strong point.
Hope that works for you. The two nicknames he has are The A-Train, and Android. Seriously, this guy will take a puck off the hand, go to the bench bending over in pain, walk through the tunnel, and then come back five minutes later and play the same as ever. We've always joked that he gets replacement shoulder and knee units when he's in the dressing room. I'm going to miss him. He actually signed for less than Ottawa was offering, but the Devils gave him term. Lou probably offered him more years than anyone else would, and Anton probably knew how his body might break down towards the fifth or sixth season. Still, good signing, and I wish him luck.

I can see why
What do you guys think of the Gonchar signing?

Really skeptical at first, like it more over time
We’ve never had someone like Gonchar. Hate the cost, term, and his age. Love the skill. Worried that we replaced Volchenkov with him, because you couldn’t have two more different players on your top pairing. He’ll be a great mentor for Karlsson. Overall it’s positive.

Reading more and more about Volch I get a greater feeling about this signing.

Don't expect flashiness
He’s not what you’d call a visible difference-maker. But he’s a rock (or a robot, if you prefer). But you’ll like him.
Chris Phillips gets very little in the way of accolades, but he’s a great teacher. When Chara came to Ottawa, he was just a big oaf who didn’t do much beyond being tall. He was paired with Phillips and very quickly developed into the player he is now. After Chara left, Volchenkov took his spot. Anton went from a guy who just hit people to being an extremely defensively-responsible player who blocked shots. I’m not saying Volchenkov is as good as Chara, but Phillips helped shape both of their careers.
It’s funny. When some players leave as UFAs, fans of the team they left can often be bitter and spiteful. That’s not the case with Anton. We really wanted to keep him, but it didn’t happen and most of us wish him the best. There’s no “god damn you Volchenkov.” It’s just “good luck, Anton. Thanks for the memories.”

It’s just "good luck, Anton. Thanks for the memories.
Except December 10th, February 1st, March 8th and March 17th of course :)
To "resign" is to voluntarily leave a position; retire. To "re-sign" is to sign again. When talking about free agents, please use the correct one.
Well, yeah
But the other 78 games he can do what he wants. Especially against Toronto. Block everything.

Thought this was interesting...
I said to myself, “He sounds like a Devil. Why didn’t the Devils draft this guy?”
Ottawa drafted him in 2000 during the1st round at the 21st pick. Devils drafted Dave Hale at the 22nd pick, who’s also a big D guy (6’1" 220 lbs)… I can’t help but assume the Devils were drooling for Volchenkov until the last minute when the Sens scooped him up. Either way, we got him now. Just thought that was interesting.

two words
Neil Brady.
2 more.
Adrian Foster
and more.
Rocky Trottier
I could go on. Hale was FAR from the worst Devils first round pick.

David Hale looked promising on the Devils blueline, if only for 1.5 years, but still.
Neil Brady was by far the worst, 3rd Overall! Coulda had Vinny Damphousse at 5 (also Center).
Wasn’t Kadeykin 2nd Round?
You know who bothered me, Jason Miller. Lance Ward, argh.
Devils Draft picks
Yeah he was. My mistake. He was the Devils first pick not a first round pick in 02.

Will be ordering...
A Volchenkov jersey within the next month (once his number is assigned. Now, before you say “It’s too soon”, I had recieved a Madden Jersey the Xmas before he went to Chicago. I need stability in my jerseys, and 6 years gives that.
Love his style of play; We arguably haven’t had a defensive defenseman of Volchenkov’s quality since Stevens (Scotty’s offensive contributions aside). I look forward to #24 (that’s open on the Devils isn’t it? Don’t see why it will change) gunning down the likes of Gaborik and Crosby 6 times each a year.
Great I’ll know it is you when your wearing the jersey. I was in Hoboken today thinking about going to the NHL Store but I didn’t know if he would wear 24 (If Salvador was traded) or maybe a different number. I agree to with the reasons why to get the jersey. 6 years is long enough for a jersey and hey maybe he takes a contract extension!

Ah, forgot about Salvador. Perhaps he will be traded. Who knows.
Separate question; has anyone bought one of the Vintage Devils jerseys? Hows the quality? Same as the premier jersey? My only hesitation about these jerseys are the “twill aplliqués”, which, in my case, come off far too often. But maybe that was just the Madden Jersey jumping ship on me.
You’ll have to find one of those on ebay or something, the NHL Store only sells Reebok now. I think that was the problem with the Green jerseys as they couldn’t do old time.

icejerseys.com still has ‘em. I got a Johnny Mac #15 back in March and it’s held up fine. They pride themselves on customization at IceJerseys, so I wouldn’t worry too much about the numbers or nameplate falling off. Just keep in mind the vintage replicas are CCM, not EDGE, so they run a tad smaller than the RBK unis.
I got a Verbeek Vintage Devils jersey from the NHL when they were doing customization for free. Its a terrific jersey, and the customization was actually sewn in, of higher quality than the RBK Premier jersey customizations.
I think eBay is the way to go now for these, until the Devils Den starts selling them again. I got a Parise Vintage jersey just the other day from eBay, same quality as my Verbeek jersey.
