How kovalchuk will affect the devils
The re signing of kovalchuk for 17 years could either be a great move or a terrible move. If he can get use to the system and still be the same player it will work out very well but if not they are stuck with him for 17 years. If he plays up to expectations the devils will have an elite offense and will go deep in to the playoffs. If not the devils will be less likely to contend for the cup. They will now have a 40 goal scorer on two lines with him and parise. He will play on a line with Elias and arnott. If Elias is healthy that could be a dynamic second line. He will also help the power play. He will play on the point with parise, Elias, arnott and either Greene or zajac. The devils will also have to dump sone salary because he puts them over the cap. A few options are zubrus who I hope they move because he makes 3.5 million per year and produces nothing, Salvador who makes 2.1 per year, white if he would waive his no trade clause who makes over 3 million per year and rolston who makes 5 million per year. Langenbrunner is also another possibilty. This move gives the devils an elite core which features brodeur, volchenkov, parise, zajac, kovalchuk and Elias which should contend for a cup. I think it will work the way the devils expect it to.

Langenbrunner isn’t going anywhere, he’s going to the presser today. I think Salvador is gone though. Ton of defenseman waiting for a job like Eckford, Corrente, Urbom, and Taormina. We have a deadline now. We have to win a Stanley Cup in the next 17 years.

Agreed.
Lou and Maclean have said that Langenbrunner is their captain when MacLean was hired. Most people are forgetting that Lemaire isn’t the head coach anymore.

The Colorado Avalanche
Have quite a bit of cap space for the upcoming season and very little size on the blueline. A lot of people are metioning the islanders, but i feel that they are two to three years away from reaching ’bubble team status". The Avalanche are a young team that performed well above expectations last year. What they lack is size. Both zubrus and salvador will help them in that category. I know they have two young stars at the center position, but i think we can all agree that Zubrus is more of a power winger at this point. His faceoffs won are less then 50% and thats not his game anyway.
Now by no means do I enjoy helping out the avalanche. I still cringe when i think about those annoying half boston half colorado Bourque jerseys, but they are a legitimate team in that division and could use some veteran leadership.
Im good with that, let’s get Kyle Cumiskey and a draft pick back for the two of Salvador and Zubrus.

Id be all kinds of excited with that deal, it could be like a 3rd Rd or 4th, and we get to shed almost $5M AND get an offensive defenseman.

Why agitate over a simple draft pick? Heck, at this point I’d send Zubrus and Salvador and a mid-round pick to Colorado just for Cumiskey. The Devils get the cap space they desire and a desirable young asset we bloggers are all quite high on. The draft pick is a “thank you” to Colorado for turning attempts at salary dumping into one-stop shopping.
Remember: Lou has to make a move (or two) to get under the cap. He isn’t behind the eight-ball the way we feared he would be when we were debating the Kovalchuk cap hit at $8 million…. so he doesn’t have to move both Zubrus and Salvador immediately. However, he is obliged to do something — even if it means parking a player in the Minors. As dangerous as the Devils appear right now, teams aren’t going to fall all over themselves to do them any favors.
In short, if I can dump both players on Denver and get something good back, I’m willing to make a trade that makes “less hockey sense” insofar as giving a mid-round pick instead of taking one. I think doing a favor like this can only help down the line by fostering goodwill with a team you might wish to do business with in the future, and mid-round picks aren’t incredibly valuble as far as history bears out.
1 thing and 1 thing only
make the people around him better
now people have to cover the whole team, not just one guy
people may think kovy will shoot so they double block him but he makes great passes, and same with elias…3 lines you have to watch out for
PS3: J-CAMPS
No way Elias is going to the Third line, I’m more prone to think that he’d play out of position at the right wing.
