Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Why the Devils are one player away from being legit cup contenders

Assuming Kovalchuk works out a deal with the Devils they would have addresed all of their needs except for one. They would then have an elite top two lines and 3 very good top four defensman and an all time great goalie. They still need another top four defensman with offensive ability and very good puck moving ability. If they traded for Kaberle or Brent Burns they would have one of the best all around teams. If they were going to do that they would have to clear some cap room which could be hard to do. They have Salvador who makes 2.9 million, Zubrus who makes 3.5 million, Rolston who makes 5 million which may be hard to move, White who makes over 3 million and Langenbrunner who makes 3.2 million but likely wont be dealt. The best options would be to deal Salavador, Zuubrus and white. If they could also deal rolston that would help a lot. They will also have to save some to re sign Parise, Greene and Zajac. That is why it could be better to sign Joe Corvo who would give them an excellent power play quarterback who can play a second pair role for less money. They will likely be able to move salvador, Zubrus and possibely white and there has been talk about moving rolston. If they get one of these three defensman they will have a great blueline with a some of the most skilled offensive players in the league.

They will have a core group featuring Brodeur, Parise, Zajac, Kovalchuk, Volchenkov and Tallinder which is an elite cast. They also have very good key role players like Elias, Arnott, Andy Greene, possibly Corvo or Kaberle or Burns,  Clarkson and Langenbrunner.

On offense the will have Zajac, Langenbrunner and Parise on one lines which worked very well last year and on another they will have elias, arnott and Kovalchuk which should be another dynamic line. That means defenses cannot just load up on parise and zajac if kovalchuk can fit with the devils. They just need another defensman to go with greene who can contribute a lot on offense. I think Greenes point total with go up this year and will be a better all around player.

On defense they have Anton Volchenkov who is a great physical shutdown defensman and Tallinder who is a very underrated defesnive defensman with excellent size and skating ability. they also have andy greene who is a very good puck mover with all around ability and can play power play and match up with top six fowards but will need someone else to play with him. That is why Corvo could be a good fit if kaberle and Burns are to expensive.

In goal they added Hedberg who is a very good backup goalie who can play some games to save brodeur for the playoffs.

Good thought, but if the Kovalchuk deal ultimately goes through in one form or another I don’t think adding a playing like Kaberle or Burns is even remotely possible. I think we see Eckford making the team and Salmella getting regular minutes this year (Salvador likely gets shipped out once the Kovalchuk stuff is finalized).

by drhgzang on Jul 26, 2010 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

then they need to make a deal for brent burns who would be a great fit or kaberle who will be hard to get. Burns is still possible. Salmella will not be playing regular minutes this year. does anyone know what happened to skoula. I hope he leaves. He is horrible and weak. Also anything is possible with Lou. All we need now is one more defensman then they will win another cup.

The KHL isn’t exactly known for respecting the contractual rights teams in other leagues have. Considering the guy was going to be a UFA, and the Devils didn’t have an avenue to retain his rights (such as arbitration), it isn’t enough of a deal to cry over.

Its not as though we would be getting compensatory picks back or something for tampering.

They aren’t going to pony up Toronto’s asking price for Kaberle, so that isn’t an issue. As for Brent Burns, the Devils simply don’t have the payroll room once Kovalchuk comes aboard. They’ll have to ship out Zubrus or Salvador just to sneak under the cap, and might trade both so there’s enough wiggle room during the season if necessary.

Adding another Top 4 defenseman sounds like a nice concept, but the money just doesn’t work. You don’t spend all the way to the cap line on Opening Night, because that puts you in a pickle when minor injuries inevitably strike. Just ask Calgary two years ago — they had a stretch after acquiring Olli Jokinen where they were dressing 17-18 men a night because they didn’t even have the cap space to call up a warm body for a night.

In the modern-day NHL, teams will need to get some contributions from young players whose cap numbers are low, simply so they can afford the stars who command big money. The Devils need to find a way to do the same, which means bringing up some kids to play the 4th line and fill out the defense.

by acasser on Jul 26, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think the Devils need another player (assuming Kovy signs) to be a cup contender. The holes in our lineup will likely be filled by young talented prospects, and this club already has a solid defensive core (which I believe improved this offseason) and an extremely talented and balanced offense. Anybody who doesn’t refer to this team as a Cup Contender is only being naive, biased or negligent.

they are already i agree but if they add one more piece they would be even better and probrably put themselves as maybe the clear cut favorites.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

With Kovalchuk on the roster acquiring another contract thats over $2mil is unlikely (unless someone like Rolston waives his NTC, even then he wont bring a return like Kaberle or Burns). This is why Eckford and Salmella likely make the team and get 10-15 minutes a night.

by drhgzang on Jul 26, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

the young guys are also very good on defense but they might not be ready to fill a top four role this year.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

Assuming a Salvador trade the top 4 looks like this:

Greene
Tallinder
Volchenkov
White

Would be nice to add another Andy Greene type player but the cap room is limited.

last year the d was terrible but they got better this year and i think greene is vastly improving and volchenkov and tallinder are excelent defensive defensman.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

last year the d was terrible

Really? Were you watching the same Devils team that the rest of us were, the team that won the Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals in the league? All this despite not having their top two defensemen (Martin and Oduya) for large parts of the season?

What would make you happy? Video-game defense where your goalie’s GAA sits slightly below 1.00?

by acasser on Jul 26, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t say they were terrible. But they definitely cannot keep up with an aggressive forechecking team. There were many occasions when our D cannot clear the crease allowing teams to get rebounds on brodeur. I’m not gonna say they were really bad but I’ll attribute the jennings trophy to brodeur

White has one working eye and a NTC, he is not getting traded.

by drhgzang on Jul 26, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

he would waive it and rolston said he would.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

Rolston did not publicly say he waive his NTC. What team trades for a D man with one working eye who makes $3mil a year?

by drhgzang on Jul 26, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

he would waive it

Why would he waive it? Where are you planning to ship him out to, and what do you think you’re getting in return? If your plan is to dump him on Florida or the Islanders for the cap space, I think you’ve got a surprise coming when Colin White tells you he prefers to play for a team that has a chance to win.

rolston said he would

Again, where are you planning to ship him out to, and what sort of return do you think you can get? Rolston’s contract is so bad that you’ll likely have to pay a team to take him on. It might not be much, but it also could cost you a good prospect or a high draft pick.

sigh…. Could we stop with the concept that all these no-trade clauses are so easily worked around? Did you pay attention to Dany Heatley vetoing a trade to Edmonton last summer? How about the handful of times Brian Burke thought he had a deal for Kaberle only to have the D-man nix it? Maybe you saw Ray Whitney scuttle a deal at the trade deadline last year because Los Angeles wouldn’t give him a three-year extension?

A NTC gives the hammer to the player. They don’t get moved unless they want to be moved, and that’s all that needs to be said about that.

by acasser on Jul 26, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

there was a rumor which said he would waive it if the team asked him too. white also would hard to deal and his eye is working now. he is still a desen player.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

Id temper your expectations, both Rolston and White are very likely to be on the team this coming season.

by drhgzang on Jul 26, 2010 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Rumours

You’ve got to come up with something better than that. Give a specific citation from a source that does more than spews garbage before you expect us to buy Rolston being moved is a possibility. Do you remember how many times Kovalchuk was signed and sealed to Los Angeles before last Monday’s announcement? Or Eklund’s comment that the Devils and Caps explored a Brodeur-for-Semin trade?

Like we’ve told all the visitors from other NHL blogs in the Kovalchuk discussions — come up with some hard evidence to back up your point. None of this “A rumour said” garbage, or “everyone knows” bs.

white is likely to be back but someone could take rolston if we take back a little salary. he can still play but not up to his salary.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

why would healtley go to edmonton he is an elite player on a very good team. burke wants too much for kaberle. he wont go to a bad team. why should he. rolston could be dealt to a playoff contender. i only think that because he said he would be willing to waive his no trade clause if asked.

by brodeur30 on Jul 26, 2010 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

Why would a contender (most of who are near the upper limit of the cap) trade for a player who is vastly under performing considering his contract is for $5 million?

by drhgzang on Jul 26, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

You don’t know your history, then. Heatley demanded a trade out of Ottawa, and Edmonton anted up with the package Ottawa thought was best for them. At the last moment, Heatley said “no thanks, I don’t want to go there” after having publicly demanded his trade. If he hadn’t had a no-trade, Heatley wouldn’t have the leverage to dictate where he was sent after deciding he didn’t want to play for the Senators anymore. Instead, the Sens had to settle for the pu-pu platter from the Sharks.

Brian Burke is entitled to ask for the moon for Kaberle if he wants — Kaberle is among the top defensemen available in a market that doesn’t have much in the way of offensive D-men.

rolston could be dealt to a playoff contender

Sure, he could be dealt to a playoff contender….. and I could be offered a multi-year contract to be Lou Lamorello’s assistant GM and successor. I’m not holding my breath expecting either to happen. For starters, I don’t see a lot of teams with the cap space to absorb Rolston’s contract without the Devils taking back an equally bad contract. Of the teams that remain, they wield the hammer with the Devils even if Rolston would consent to a deal — the biggest gains the Devils make out of the trade is shedding salary and opening up a roster spot for someone else, and they’ll have to pay dearly for the privledge.

If you meant to say “Rolston could be dealt to a Cup conteder” (emphasis mine), I don’t see it. Most of those teams are pretty much settled at this point, and Rolston isn’t going to give them anything more than he gave the Devils, meaning he’d be nothing more than a very expensive complementary piece to them. Since those teams are generally clustered around the upper limit, there’s no reason for them to take on that kind of salary, either.

You know, there is a difference between trading some people to clear cap space and completely renovating a roster to bring players in…we can’t cross the line.

Salvador, Zubrus, White, Langenbrunner, Rolston, all names tossed around, but is enough ever enough? It’s another year later, maybe Eckford, Corrente, Urbom, and others are ready to take on full-time NHL roster spots, and if they’re not, we have the trade deadline to fix our needs. Lou and MacLean just have to tell the players what their roles are, and they will be expected to go out and do them.

Yankees in baseball, Giants in football and Devils in hockey. It's that simple. I have no off-season.

by DownGoesAvery on Jul 26, 2010 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

The Devils will fill out that one need

For the offensive defenseman. You’d think Eckford, Urbom, and Taormina will get a shot at cracking the starting roster. I think once the Devils win (if they do) the Kovy war, Salvador will probably be traded. Mottau won’t be back. So you have two potential openings..

Greene-Volchenkov
Rookie (Urbom?)- Tallinder
White- Fraser (Taormina, Corrente, and Salmela?)

If he's not, I am

I’d link it…but it’ll just ask you for the log-in for insider, so won’t help you. This was all that came up for a Rolston search.

The New Jersey Devils will look to dump some players for money reasons, and two guys that GM Lou Lamoriello might dangle first at Brian Rolston and Bryce Salvador.

HockeyBuzz’s Andy Strickland tweets that Rolston is a “very strong candidate to be moved,” but the prohibitive factor is the money he’s owed. So FanHouse’s Chris Botta writes, “It’s hard to fathom any general manager taking on Brian Rolston’s $5 million for each of the next two years, no matter the sweeteners; Lamoriello no doubt wishes he had that one back.”

Meanwhile, Salvador makes $2.9 million annually for the next two years. He might be an attractive acquisition for a team that lost out of the defensemen bidding early in free agency.
