Who would you like to see make the Devils' roster?

I wasn't planning to take up a fan-post, but oh well, I did...

Parise, Zajac, Langenbrunner, Elias, Kovalchuk and Arnott are very likely going to be the top-6 forwards on this team, and rightfully so, they are elite scoring lines that create offense in very different ways.  The ZZ-Pops line is a crash-the-net and go get the rebounds kind of line, expect lots of shots from everywhere with these guys, John MacLean emphasizes shoot-first all the time, I don't expect that to be any different as head coach.  The Kovy-Arnott-Elias line (which I assume will be named at some point mid-season) is the dynamic, "deke" line (what's the word for that that Doc always uses...).

After the top-six, there are options.  The likely third line could be Rolston on the left and Zubrus either at center or RW if he is not traded, with David Clarkson as the best choice for RW on the third line.  I personally like Josefson at center, Lou has already said that he wants some of the young guys (such as Tedenby, Josefson, Urbom, Henrique...guys that have not seen NHL ice), or at least one, in the opening night lineup.  I would say Josefson has the upper hand on Tedenby as far as forwards are concerned, especially because the Devils still have a surplus of wingers, and a need for centers despite acquiring Arnott.  Looking ahead, I see Josefson stepping into the 2nd line center spot in the upcoming years.

So I assume Zubrus is out (even though I would argue pro-Zubrus here), and my third line would be Rolston-Josefson-Clarkson.  That line is a nice compliment to the top two lines, realizing that although Rolston's production is not what his salary suggests he should be, he's a third liner that could put 20 goals up in Johnny Mac's system.  Clarkson is a bonus as well, you can pencil him in for 15 goals with a 20-goal potential easily if he stays healthy.  Now should an injury occur to the top three lines (and we always seem to get hit hard early in the season), then I would like to see Zharkov get plugged into either the third line right wing position or fourth line.  Zharkov has shown signs of being a strong skating pass-first winger, and it's only a matter of time before he breaks out in the goal category.

My fourth line right now is PL3-Pelley-Zharkov, but as the season progresses, I would love to see Tedenby up in the NHL and Palmieri as well.  Again, we'll see if injuries allow opportunities for those guys.

As for defense, it's a little up-in-the-air in terms of how many spots will be available with Bryce Salvador's contract (will he be traded?).  As of right now, assuming Salvador is moved, we have Volchenkov, Greene, Tallinder, White and likely Fraser already almost guaranteed roster spots.  It's 5-6, though, that's anyone's guess.  Bryce could be in there, but Alexander Urbom, Matt Corrente, Tyler Eckford and Anssi Salmela are the top candidates as far as I would guess.  Fraser could be the 6/7 defenseman, but there is really one spot available.  Taormina and Merrill might make a case as well, but I would venture a guess that Urbom and Corrente have the upper hand for now.

We know the goaltending situation, it's Brodeur and Hedberg barring injuries.  I like the 65-game limit idea for Marty, let Hedberg get starts, even if we don't win the conference or division, it's worth saving Marty for the games that matter (just remember, the 7 and 8 seeds met in the ECF this season, 6 also beat 3 in the first round).  Plus, Hedberg can put up respectable numbers, I like the signing, although I wonder if we needed to spend $1.5M plus bonuses for his services for one year.

To sum it up, here's my mock-lineups ASSUMING the NHLPA wins the Kovalchuk arbitration hearing.  That's a big assumption, but nonetheless, here they are:

Parise - Zajac - Langenbrunner (let them stay together for at least half the season no matter what...)

Kovalchuk - Arnott - Elias

Rolston - Josefson - Clarkson

LeBlond - Pelley - Zharkov

---------------------

Greene - Volchenkov (interchangable)

Tallinder - White

Fraser - Corrente (my 21st player would be a defenseman that could be plugged into the 5-6 combo, probably Salmela)

Looking at the lineup, you could make an arguement that we could have eight  20-goal scorers (Parise, Zajac, Langenbrunner, Kovalchuk, Arnott, Elias, Rolston, Clarkson) if everyone stays reasonably healthy.  All of those eight forwards have either scored 20+ recently or could have last season if they stayed healthy, and I don't think stats will take a hit under MacLean as they may have under Lemaire.

I am curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Quick video on Volchenkov

A friend wanted to know more about him, so I looked him up and found this video, I think it sums him up…

The more the better, but if I had to pick one I’d go with Josefson. We haven’t had great depth at center in a while. He might not be ready but if he earns a spot I think he’ll fit in fine.

Players Currently in My Doghouse: Brian Rolston

The top line

I don’t necessarily think ZZ Pops is set in stone. I could see Clarkson given a shot to win a Top 6 role, and that’s likely where he fits should he succeed. I think it is a guarantee that Jason Arnott won’t be the right wing there, since his role is to center the #2 unit. I don’t see Elias or Kovalchuk making a lot of sense up there either, as their skills more closely approximate what Zajac and Parise (respectively) bring to the line. That leaves Clarkson, and maybe Rolston in case of injury, as the other guys you could see in the Top 6.

Isn’t Patrick Davis supposed to be a more defensive-minded forward? I seem to recall that from his brief stint with the parent club last season, and I’d like to see the club groom another young penalty killer or two. Even if we’re talking giving a guy thirty seconds to a minute of PK time a night with one of the veterans out there to take the draws and Patrick’s job to play support, I think it would be something to look at. I’m not sure Pelley is the guy for this kind of role, as he seems to be a more effective player now that he isn’t suffering under the weight of being “the next John Madden” and receiving all those comparisons.

Adam Henrique can be the Madden 2.0

He is great on faceoffs and worked an excellent PK with Windsor and plus he can score a lot of points. He may be better then Madden but we can’t tell now.

henrique

is ultra tallented and a steal for where we got him… i expect him to put 60 + points in his 3rd/4th season

by kewlnsimpguy on Jul 31, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s a little hard to gauge henrique’s offensive potential given he played with taylor hall.

my feeling is that josefson will be more ready for the NHL than henrique. henrique played against kids – josefson has played against men for 2 yrs.

i think both these guys are fantastic prospects, though, and if they pan out close to what i think they’re capable of, then i think we will be very pleased to have zajac-josefson-henrique as our top 3 centers. hopefully they will all be excellent two-way centers.

henrique played in the same size ice surface… josefson hasn’t

by kewlnsimpguy on Aug 1, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

No doubt Josefson will have to make an adjustment to the size of the rink, and there will be some growing pains for him. But Henrique was a 20-year-old playing with an NHL-ready Taylor Hall against mostly 18 and 19-year-old kids. His point total jumped by almost 50% this year and his plus/minus jumped by 100%. Some of that is his own improvement, but a lot of it is just having the opportunity to play against kids with much less experience than he has. In the World Juniors, playing against the top players under 20, he notched just 8 shots and 1 goal in 6 games.

Josefson, on the other hand, has been playing against players ranging anywhere from 17 to 40 years old, including a large number of former NHLers. He made a big improvement this season over last season and earned second-line minutes in the top league outside of North America. He then went to the World Juniors, and on a North American ice surface against the same level of competition that Henrique played against he notched 3g, 3a and 17 shots in 6 games. Pretty impressive stuff.

I believe Henrique will be a winger someday. He can scoring goals and keeping up with Taylor Hall last year in Windsor OHL. If you look at goals per game, he literally had the same number, Henrique had a mid-season injury last season. He’s not the best playmaker in the world, but then again, he didn’t get first line ice time because of who was on that stacked Spitfires team.

I see a Tedenby-Josefson-Henrique line down the road, and I also agree that Clarkson might be a top-6 forward someday, but this year, he really gives us value as a third liner. The only player you might take out of the top 6 is Langenbrunner, but who do you insert on the Parise-Zajac line? You can’t move Elias up, because the whole point is to have Arnott and Elias together. Clarkson could play with the top line, but his value to us is at third line RW.

I know it’s a longshot for this season but I’d like to see Josefson at third line center & Henrique at fourth line center. They would both have to learn on the job but they’re both very inteligent players. Josefson may have played with men in sweeden the last couple of seasons but going from europian hockey to N.H.L. hockey is alot harder than you think. Henrique played junior but he’s played the north american game all his life. He also has played alot of hockey & big hockey games in the last 2 years. He played alot more hockey than Josefson has.
I also think that Arnot, Elias, & Kovalchuck should be a line with Kovalchuck playing on right wing to take advantage of his one timer.

Righty

Being that Kovy is a right-handed shot, in order to best take advantage of his one-timer, he needs to play on the LW and face the Center.
Josefson is ahead of Henrique at this stage. You mention how going from European to NHL hockey is more difficult than we think. But going from Junior to the NHL is a huge leap.
Im excited to see these prospects play on the big club this season as well, but Id rather they take all the time they (and the Devils believe they) need to give their NHL careers the best chance

I agree not to mention he has always been at lw. While Elias has been moved to different spots his whole career. With the big Jason Arnott centering that line I think we are due to see huge numbers from his wingers.

by KingHellfire on Aug 1, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that Kovalchuk and Elias haven’t amassed great numbers without him. This is the first time in awhile that Kovalchuk has been on a complete line. This may be best line he has had since he and Savard were together in Atlanta.

by KingHellfire on Aug 1, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

As good as Savard was, Kovalchuk’s “best” line came whenever he was with Dany Heatley. It didn’t matter if you held a raffle and brought some lucky fan came out of the seats to center those two, Heatley is the best player Kovalchuk has spent any amount of time with.

Eckford...

I’d love for the additonal puck moving D-man role to be filled by this kid. He’s got a wicked mid-height shot from the point, and can qb a pp. He’s the most ready defenseman that can fill a hole.

The offense is going to be great.
1- Zach parise, Travis Zajac and Jamie Langenrbunner have excellent chemistry and parise is one of the leagues most skilled scorers and playmakers. Zajac has very good all around ability and can score between 25-32 goals per season and set up others very well. Langenrbrunner is a solid player who scorers clutch goals and adds a good veteran presence.
2- Elias, Arnott and kovalchuk could make one of the best lines in the league. Elias when healthy is still a very skilled player who can put up 30 goals per season with excellent playmaking ability and could create more chances for Kovalchuk. In their new system Kovalchuk should benefit and have a big year. He will also have talented line mates. He has a tremendous wrist shot, great skating ability and can make things happen offensively. He can also be a great power play point man with a big shot. Arnott will benefit from having very skilled linemates and is familiar with the system. I think he will bounce back offensively. He has very good all around ability in both ends.
3- They have Clarkson who is very good at crashing the net and Rolston who has a big shot but they will need to find a center. They have some very good young prospects who could be good two way centers. This would be a very good third line if they find a solid all around center.
