What are your favorite regular season games at the Prudential Center?

Let's take some time off of analyzing Collective Bargaining Agreements and how many goals the Devils may score in the 2010-11 season and whether the Devils will even be in Newark three years from now.  Let's update the "favorite games" segment.  List some of your favorite games that you have seen at the Rock, either in person or not.

I'll list my top 10 (there have been a number of classics):

1. BLACKHAWKS @ DEVILS - March 17th, 2009: Martin Brodeur breaks the NHL's all-time record for goaltender regular season victories.  The game was exciting throughout, the crowd was electric, the Devils scored early and often, Patrik Elias broke the franchise's scoring record and the Devils held the Hawks off to win the game, 3-2, which is actually the most common score for a Martin Brodeur victory (that is a fact by the way).  552 is an instant classic, I had the privilege of being in attendance that night, and I won't ever forget it.

2. RANGERS @ DEVILS - December 12th, 2008: If you watched this game at all, you probably still remember many details about it.  Jay Pandolfo's short-handed goal, Zajac's powerplay goal, the Gionta backhander, blowing the four-goal lead, Elias scoring 10 seconds after the Rangers tied the game at 5, this game had everything...except goaltending and defense.  It was a dramatic 8-5 win for the Devils, a win they needed against the rival Rangers.

3. PENGUINS @ DEVILS - January 30th, 2009: No, this is not retro night, but in my opinion, this is the most entertaining regular season game since the Prudential Center opened.  It may be ranked third, but having been in attendance that night (it was also Doc Emrick night), this was a thriller.  It extended an 8-game winning streak for the Devils, the Devils rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, but truly dominated the game.  It ended with two Jamie Langenbrunner goals, he scored six goals in three games, including back-to-back overtime winners.

4. MAPLE LEAFS @ DEVILS - February 5th, 2010: This is Ilya Kovalchuk's Devils debut.  That's what most Devils fans will remember this game for.  This was also the third of three games against Toronto within an eight-day span.  Kovalchuk assisted on the game's first goal, then Toronto took over for a majority of the game, then collapsed late in the game.  The Devils scored three goals in three minutes...to end the 3rd period to win in regulation, 4-3.  This game was a classic, and a new superstar energized the arena.

5. LIGHTNING @ DEVILS - October 31st, 2007: This was the first win for the Devils at the Prudential Center.  Normally, 6-1 games aren't necessarily the most entertaining throughout the game, but this game had extra excitement.  The team was struggling, so the offensive explosion was welcomed, thanks in large part to John Madden, and most of all, Jay Pandolfo, who registered a hat trick plus an assist.  The Devils blew a 2-1 lead wide open in the third period, with four third period goals to seal the win.

6. LIGHTNING @ DEVILS - April 3rd, 2009: The night started by honoring Martin Brodeur for breaking the goaltender's all-time wins record.  The Devils had been slumping badly coming into this game, and went down early.  Brodeur relieved Kevin Weekes early in the second period, allowing another goal to Steven Stamkos.  Then a flurry of chances for the Devils, then a Mike Mottau dump-in that forced Karri Ramo of Tampa Bay to throw his goalie stick, giving Brendan Shanahan a penalty shot goal.  The Devils scored twice more before a wild third period and overtime, where Zach Parise won the game for the Devils.

7. CAPITALS @ DEVILS - November 15th, 2008: Martin Brodeur had just gone down with a serious bicep injury, and the Devils were in a skid.  David Clarkson scored early, but Washington scored twice in the first.  The game then became a 3-2 Devils lead, then 3-3, then 4-3 Devils before 4-4, 5-4 in the third period, then Alex Ovechkin tied the game in the final second of the third period.  The Devils won in a shootout, capping an exciting 6-5 win for Clemmensen and the Devils.

8. PENGUINS @ DEVILS - March 17th, 2010: I get the feeling a tradition was born with "retro night" at the Prudential Center.  March 18th, 2011 has already been scheduled, but the Devils brought back the red and green jerseys, which sparked an exciting game between the Pens and Devils.  The goal scoring was explosive, at least on the Devils' side, and the Devils won 5-2.  This was also the sixth win in six tries against Pittsburgh.

9. SHARKS @ DEVILS - February 15th, 2009: This game was another one of those crazy, back and forth games.  Now any time a hockey game has a 3-2 score after the first period, it usually becomes a crazy game.  This one certainly was.  The Devils traded goals with San Jose in the first, taking a 3-2 lead into the second period, San Jose left the second up by one, but the Devils outscored the Sharks, 3-1 in the third period to win the game, 6-5.

10. PENGUINS @ DEVILS - March 12th, 2010: I considered a number of games for the final "classic" spot, but Devils fans really love this game.  It was a game in which both penalty boxes were up to capacity.  One could comfortably say that Ilya Kovalchuk was the star of this game, notching a pair of assists, a penalty shot and a thrid period goal en route to a 3-1 win.  This game was exciting to say the least.

I hope a lot of good memories come back to all of you, they certainly do to me.  I'm sure I'm missing some great games, considering how new the arena is, there have been an abundance of memorable games.

I have an awful memory so I can’t really remember past last year. My top 3 from last year though would be Retro Night, the Leafs comeback game, and the 1-0 shootout win against the Rangers.

The 1-0 shootout win against NYR would be in my top 10, but that was not at the Rock. If it’s any consolation, the 8-5 Ranger game from 08-09 is in my top 10…

Yankees in baseball, Giants in football and Devils in hockey. It's that simple. I have no off-season.

Like I said awful memory. Thought that game was at the Rock

Retro night was my favorite. Sweeping Crosby and the Pens was especially sweet. I’m hoping the positive reaction to the retro jerseys will spark the organization to finally make the red and green the official third jersey for the Devils.

I agree with you. Everything was so positive about that night… I’m not sure what it was, but I loved it. That and I brought three Pens fans to the game with me since I’m from PA and don’t know any other Devils fans, so getting to chant “6 and 0” to them and “You can’t beat us” as the game was ending was awesome.

I was at 5 of those games

The Ranger Devils one was the best. 13 goals, Marty vs Henrik, 4 fights, and the Devils beating them. The Pittsburgh game was great. Down by 2 I almost went home but I said just stay, something good will happen. And they won. Classics.

I was at four.

The atmosphere at 552 was unbelievable. I’ve been at some heartbreaking playoff games, I’ve been to a lot of great games, but nothing will top this. No opening night, rivalry game or playoff game that I’ve ever been to, competes with this one. The national media that was there, the hype coming back from Montreal, the opponent, everything was amazing that night.

I was also at 1/30/09, that Pittsburgh game you were talking about: that was actually my first game at the Rock. I had been to some away games, but so many things came up that I never made to the Rock in its inaugural season. I got a major treat, especially surrounded by Pittsburgh fans…

I was also at the TB game when they honored Marty for 552, that was a fun night, especially with Weekes starting, getting injured, Brodeur relieving him and what really turned out to be a classic.

I was also at Retro Night, and although it was a great event, perfected by the organization, c’mon, it wasn’t the best… I am looking forward to 3/18/11, though, I just wish they would bring the Colorado jerseys back one time only. That would be a great retro night if we could get the Avalanche in here.

Oh and yes I’ve been at the TB one. Parise with the OT goal and jumping on the glass. I like the Avs idea. Have them wear the Nordiques jersey. Great game. The tickets should read Rockies vs Nordiques. How cool would that be?

Flyers Game in Late December 2008

There was a shootout game against the Flyers right before Christmas in 2008. The recap is here. I just remember this being very exciting. I was with my 6 year old son and I remember jumping up and down. It’s not on the above top 10 but I think very deserving

I don’t know how I can’t remember this one. I looked through game-by-game results since the Rock opened, and I could not remember this game. I’ll take your word though, I remember Flyers-Devils games being extremely intense that year, moreso than any year since the last time we played them in the playoffs.

552

I’ve been to many Devils games myself; Number 4 on your list, featuring Kovy’s debut was an instant classic. I was actually sitting in the lower section and greeted John before the game, and distinctly recall him saying that there is a certain buzz in the crowd tonight and anticipation for debut of Ilya. He had a nice round of applause and a pretty good game, but what made the match remarkable was the huge comeback the Devils had, scoring three goals within three minutes. That was an absolute frenzy. Keep in mind they were completely lifeless throughout the entire second and onto the last five minutes of the 3rd period. Nobody expected that huge comeback.

But the best Devils game I have ever attended in person? Win 552 for Brodeur against the blackhawks. I’ve been to some amazing playoff games, but I’ve never been to a game where the entire crowd was just consistently loud every single time Marty touched the puck. This was the most involved game I have ever heard the crowd, to be honest. Top it off with Elias breaking the record for most points scored as a Devil (and proclamations of “PATTY” and “Pat-Rick Eli-as” after breaking the record from the crowd) and its just one of those sporting events seen live that I will always remember as the years carry on.

6 of the 10

I made

1, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 8.

The St. Pat’s games couldn’t compare for atmosphere. And those of you at that Toronto game forgot how much it was awful until the last 5 minutes.

For me, it was the comeback and the streak (Number 3) against the Penguins. I brought 20 people from my work to that game. They were impressed. . .

I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
