Devils Quick Links: Kovalchuk Contract Deadline Extended

Wednesday was supposed to be the day of all days. The New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk submitted a contract last Friday, and by rule of the CBA, the NHL was to supposed to accept or reject the contract by Wednesday, 5 p.m. ET. Instead, the NHL and NHLPA mutually agreed to extend the deadline 48 hours to Friday 5 p.m. ET. So Friday will be the day of all days, at least for now. Here's some links around the hockey world pertaining to this fiasco.

Lamoriello statement on deadline extension - Shortly after the NHL announced the extension, Devils President/CEO/GM Lou Lamoriello issued a very basic, predictable statement. He, the Devils, and Kovalchuk have no authority here, and just have to sit and wait until Friday afternoon. Lamoriello is staying positive about the submitted contract.

No decision today on Ilya Kovalchuk contract; deadline extended - Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger has a good breakdown
of the Kovalchuk Saga. He also put up a year-by-year breakdown of the 15yrs/$100million contract that was submitted.

Devils right wing David Clarkson tests endurance in ride with Lance Armstrong - OK, this has nothing to do with Ilya Kovalchuk. But if you're sick of hearing his name, and words like "circumvention" or "Collective Bargaining Agreement," then I suggest reading this by Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record.

NHL gives union ultimatum on Kovalchuk, Luongo, Hossa - If you feel the opposite, then maybe some exclusive gossip from a "source" will intrigue you. Larry Brooks from the NY Post is reporting that the NHL is strong-arming the NHLPA to make changes to the CBA (cap hits and front loaded contracts specifically) or else they will reject the Ilya Kovalchuk and Roberto Luongo contracts, and look further into the Marian Hossa contract. Put some halite on this, because Gulitti and Darren Dreger are reporting no ultimatum was given. Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo Sports has his take on the deadline extension and the NY Post's report.

You may use the comments to discuss these articles/reports/twits/etc. Feel free to add additional writings that I didn't link. Please link anything that requires one and follow the rules and guidelines. Also, I'm throwing up a poll because I'm curious what you, the readers think at this point.

Changes

Changes to the contract cannot be made. It is s signed, legally binding document between the NJ Devils and the Player. The NHLPA or the League cannot make modifications to the document.

I abstain from the poll, my vote being "Accepted, and the CBA is modified. "

Murdoc is right

The contract cannot be altered unless it is first rejected, then altered, then re-submitted. I would also vote that the contract is accepted, and the CBA is modified.

I added your option because it is possible. You both are correct, but at this point the NHL and NHLPA are doing whatever they want. Who says they won’t contact the Devils/Kovy, makes minor changes, sign a new contract, and accept it? The CBA can be changed whenever (see yesterday), and all of this is from the CBA.

Example – With the allowance of the team and player in question, the NHL and the NHLPA may alter changes to any SPC signed and submitted. It must be accepted by the team, the player and/or his agent, the NHL, and the NHLPA.

Understood :)

I think at this point it comes down to expediency. There would not have been an extension in deadline if things weren’t being worked out, and at this stage of the offseason, I’m fairly certain both sides want the whole damn thing over with; Kovy, the other investigations, potential for penalization. The league looks terrible now, but it will look even worse if further arbitration and action against other SPCs lasts into camp and even worse, into the regular season.

It seems that in order to win this war, the PA has to pick a first battle and win it decisively. I don’t think this battle can be won by them. They may win the fight if they come with shock and awe (not that I beleive for a moment they have the General capable of orchestrating such at this time), but the cost would be too high. They have a better chance of wining the war if they conceed this ground, retreat, regroup, get someone strong enough to lead the battle and fight the war when their balls aren’t in a vice.

I vote for F (which is also the grade I give the NHL for this whole mess): The league still doesn’t make up its mind and ask for yet another extension.

As a side note, I would like to commend all the Rangers (and other teams) fans who, despite their hatred for the Devils, used their head and voiced their disgust for the league’s actions. (You know the league is doing something wrong when even Rangers fans agree with us.)

NHL

The league always goes out of its way to please the causual fan at the expense of the real Hockey fans. The NHL does not see that the whole Kovalchuck contract mess makes the league look like a joke or even less credible than the WWF by changing the rules as they go along !

Beware

next thing you know, there will be cages lowered when a fight breaks out in a game and they’ll have to fight under Duchess of Queensbury rules.

Gah, Dreger and Staple both think we’re getting another extension.

F$^%(&%!!!!!

I was waiting for this since Wednesday. If the NHLPA lets this through again I am going to be ticked off.
