Reports: NHL to Approve Ilya Kovalchuk Contract with New Jersey Devils

FINALLY, this will be reality. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

If you wanted to see Ilya Kovalchuk re-signed as a New Jersey Devil or at least an end to this summer-long saga of the Devils and Kovalchuk trying to work out a contract the NHL would approve, then today may be your lucky day.   Reports are coming out that the NHL will accept the $100 million, 15 year contract between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk.

There are multiple reports, here are a few.  First, Darren Dreger of TSN has reported that the NHL will accept the contract as part of a larger agreement between the NHL and NHLPA about CBA negotiations. Second, even  ESPN has a short blurb reporting the same news. Third,  Sportsnet has went a little further, with a big graphic along with the year-by-year breakdown of the contract.  Fourth, Tom Gulitti also reports that the deal will be accepted, along with the reminder that the Devils now have to get underneath the salary cap.

Nothing is official from the NHL just yet; but given that major hockey media outlets and reporters are confident enough to report it, I'm confident enough to join in - hoping there aren't any more surprises. There will definitely be more details later, especially about what amendments to the CBA will be made; so expect this post to be updated later today.

And before anyone asks, here are my thoughts on who the Devils should to trade away to get underneath the salary cap.  Posted back in mid-July, you know, when the Devils made the first signing.   It's still applicable today unless something goes horribly awry before 5 PM.  Either way, good luck to Lou for going to have make some deals in less than a month.  But for now, Lou, Jeff Vanderbeek, Ilya Kovalchuk, Jay Grossman, the players, the coaches, the marketing staff, and the many Devils fans all around the world can breathe a little easier.

UPDATE #6: From kellyn in the comments, Gulitti is now hearing 9 PM EDT as the new deadline. This would be deadline #4 at this point.  You know, I'm going to stop updating these until there's some actual, more solid news than just "The NHL and PA need more time."  This is ridiculous.

UPDATE #5: Per njss4 in the comments to this post, Dan Rosen just tweeted that the deadline is now 8 PM EDT.  In a word: Sigh.  Who is Dan Rosen? A writer at NHL.com, so it's good. What's not good? Tom Gulitti hearing that the Devils could still be penalized for the first Kovalchuk contractt - the one that Richard Bloch ruled that the Devils did not act in bad faith.  The one that was ruled on nearly a month ago, and rejected weeks before then.  Thanks to kellyn in the comments for finding that.

UPDATE #4: While we await the paperwork to be officially done (Gulitti tweeted there may be another extension into this evening to finish it), Darren Dreger wrote up this article at TSN regarding the new amendments to the CBA. They only deal with any contract longer than 5 years.  It's more meaty than his earlier tweets, so do read it.

Basically, any cap hit for years past age 41 will count for the full value - they won't be included in the average annual value used prior.  Plus, the average annual value for players from age 36 through 40 can't be lower than $1 million. These rules won't affect current contracts or the Kovalchuk deal, but future ones (e.g. Zach Parise's extension).

Lastly, I've moved Update #1 and #2 beyond the jump for historical purposes. Once this is made official, I'll update the larger text accordingly while moving other updates beyond the jump.  Thanks for your patience.

Star-divide

UPDATE #3: NHL.com announced that the deadline was extended...to 7 PM EDT.   So in less than 30 minutes, there should be something official.  Finally.

Darren Dreger of TSN has tweeted some regulations - what a long-term deal is, what defines actual value for said long-term deals, the minimum AAV for players aged 36-40, and what this effects.

UPDATE #2:  From user kellyn in the comments, Darren Dreger has this disappointing tweet:

The NHL and NHLPA have extended the 5pm deadline to finalize agreement.

I hope, I hope, I hope this is just for formal purposes.  After all of the reports, anything more would be ridiculous.

UPDATE #1:  ESPN has updated their story with this crucial line from the AP.

Jay Grossman, Kovalchuk's agent, confirmed the agreement in an e-mail, The Associated Press reported.

I think it's happening.   Here's a second bit.  With respect to CBA amendments, normally the NHLPA has to vote on it and get 20 out of 30 votes for approval.  Tom Gulitti reported that's not needed in this tweet:

Correctiion. NHLPA board gave pre-authorization to negotiators to make this deal, so no vote will be needed.

I really think it's happening now.  Speaking of CBA changes, Larry Brooks tweeted this take, saying the amendment move is a "victory" for other clubs.  Not sure what the amendment exactly is, but per this tweet by Nick Kypreos, it appears that contracts won't use years beyond age 40 for the player to reduce the cap hit of a contract.  If that's true, then based on Brooks' tweet, it's probably a stepping stone for hard term limits for the next CBA in 2012 - so teams, get your guys locked up long term in 2011!   More later.

One more thing: Thanks to Matt in the comments for finding this: Sovietsky Sport's Pavel Lysenkov just called Kovalchuk and tweeted:

Just phoned Kovalchuk. "Ilya, can I congratulate you?" Contract approved? " - "Yes, true. Thank you," - Kovalchuk confirmed.

It's so close, you can taste it.

Seriously though, it’s about freakin’ time. Lou’s still got a lot of work ahead of him, trying to get under the cap. At least with trades, he won’t have to wait a month and a half for NHL approval…

Okay. Well, I was going to ask how the rest of you think this will affect the signing of Zach Parise moving forward.

by kellyn on Sep 3, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

It wont

Zach will sign a deal next year for the same approximate Cap hit, IMO.

by Skuba7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope you’re right. I only ask because a lot of other people are of the opinion that Kovalchuk’s contract, if accepted, will negatively impact the Devils ability to re-sign Zach Parise.

by kellyn on Sep 3, 2010 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the quick answer to finding Zach money is Jason Arnott’s contract to expire after this season. Assumedly (the Devils seem to assume at least), Josefson will be ready to be Number 2 Center behind Zajac, and Arnott will be expendable.

"Don't worry about my Cap." - Lou Lamoriello

by Skuba7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It takes about five minutes on capgeek to show that not to be the case. Those who have that opinion tend to be those who would like for that to happen.

Besides, it’s difficult to imagine Lou lacks that kind of foresight. He went through all of this in trying to get a lower cap hit for IK specifically to maintain the teams core.

Playing Devils' advocate since 1982.

by elesias on Sep 3, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Same, unless Zach Parise for some reason or another does not want to be a devil, then we will have no problem signing him for 6-7.5 mill for 4-7 years (rough estimates)

by devsfan9 on Sep 3, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Tough to say.

Had things progressed normally, regardless of whether IK was signed or not, I’d have thought Lou would then turn his attention to signing Zach to an extension… but with limited time to get cap compliant and some time needed to absorb the unknown rule(s) changes just passed, it might be a while.

As far as monetarily, I don’t think it affects it at all. The only things that might be affected are the length of the contract and/or terms involved, or Parise’s willingness to remain with the team.

It's likely that 10 years down the road

the Devils will regret the signing at the time. But if it gets them a Cup or two in Marty’s final seasons, I would say it’s 100 percent worth the contract.

Well hello Founder

I hate to agree here, but when Kovy can no longer put up 40+ goal seasons, $6.67M will seem like a lot of money. But Id bet on him being a 30+ goal-scorer for as long as he is in the NHL.

I don’t know about that just yet. Depends on how hard the PA wants to fight the eventual term limits the NHL will demand in 2012. Because that’s the next logical step after the as-of-yet-unconfirmed-amendment.

So I am confused; I thought after 5 today the CBA will be amended and those contracts will not longer be permitted. Unless the Kings wanted to submit a contract in the next 15 minutes its over eh?

by devsfan9 on Sep 3, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if the Kings did that, the NHL could simply turn around and reject it. That all these reports refer to Kovalchuk’s contract being “grandfathered” is grounds enough. All that term means is that the Kovy deal doesn’t satisfy the new rules (and might not satisfy the old ones, at least in the League’s eyes), but that the League will let it pass and take no further action on the affair. In short, a giant game of “Let’s Pretend”.

by acasser on Sep 3, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You can still sign a player to a 15 yr deal. Any year after the age of 41 however will not count when averaging the cap hit.

by drhgzang on Sep 3, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

The amendment concerns deals over age 40.

Given that Doughty is 20, the Kings can give him a 19 year deal if they want, and all the years go for the cap hit.

After all of this? No, he doesn’t. It’s not just about getting under the cap in time, it’s about the team’s psyche under a new coach.

The subsequent player movement is all a part of this saga and the team needs closure.

by elesias on Sep 3, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m sure the team has been following this much less than we have.

trade values are probably at their lowest now. they start to go up when injuries hit, and they start to hit during training camp. it’s unfortunate to do to the players, but using training camp to evaluate players is probably the best course.

this isn’t saying that i would be surprised if a deal happened before then, but a deal certainly does not have to happen before then.

by Triumph44 on Sep 3, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Trade value is pretty irrelevant at this point, as Lou has very little leverage to begin with.

Remember, he's essentially been sitting on this for

almost two months now. I’m pretty sure he’s had a lot of conversations in the interim in case the deal was approved. If you read a lot of Lou’s quotes it sounds like he’s confident he could do what it took to get under the cap. Maybe I’m just reading between the lines, but that sounds to me that he knows that it will be taken care of.

So now

the Devils must clear what? 4 mill in cap space and the line up (as of now) looks like this;

(fyi, positions may not be correct, just getting names out)
ZZPops
Kovy-Arnott-Elias
Rolston-Zubrus-Clarkson
Sharky-Pelley-PL3

A-Greene
Salvador-Tallinder
White-Fraser/Salmela

As many have said, Zubrus and Salvador are most likely to go. Which should give us about 2/2.5 in cap space right? Here’s the lineup I would want;

ZZPops
Kovy-Arnott-Elias
Rolston-Jacobson-Clarkson
Tendenby-Pelley-PL3/Sharky

A-Greene
Tallinder-(whichever rookie makes the team)
White-Fraser/Salmela

A couple of points;
-True, Josefson is not acclimated to the NHL rinks. But he did play in the Swiss Elite league on the second line with grown men as an 18 year old. 3rd line duties with 2 defensively responsible players should be okay.
-I put Tallinder with whichever rookie defenseman because he was brought on for a mentor role. He did a great job with Myers getting him used to the NHL. While I don’t think any of our prospects are at that level, playing with an experienced player whose been in that role before will help.
-Tendenby will hopefully make the team, but I do not see him in anything more than a 4th line role, similar to how JVR was brought in on the Flyers last year. If anything, it makes the 4th line more dangerous, and, against more skill oriented opponents (teams lacking a true enforcer), a 4th line of Tendenby-Pelley-Sharky could theoretically do some damage.

And (the following is without Kovy’s 6.67 mill cap hit), we are under the cap with this lineup!

Don't bet against Lou trading Rolston

Now, I’m not crazy where I think Lou could send Rolston packing for a 3rd rounder straight up. That simply won’t happen. What the Devils will likely do is throw in Mattias Tedenby. Think about it, left wing should not be an issue in NJ (assuming health) for the next several years, obviously Parise needs to get signed, but once he does, this team has two of the top ten left wings in the game. Lou can afford to move Tedenby, and he probably will. I believe management likes Salvador and Zubrus.

Scary thought is..

What IF Parise leaves? Its not certain until he signs that he will stay with the team. I would trade Tedenby just to take a contract. Mattias is to good and would make a solid 3rd line with Josefson or Henrique and maybe Zharkov on the right wing. I would either trade Vasyunov or Eckford or both to lose Rolston.

Vasyunov has no value, and I don’t think Eckford could get it done.

This is interesting..

If the Kovalchuk contract was placed under these new rules Dreger put up, his cap hit for the first 13 years would be $7,153,846, then $3m year 14, then $4m year 15. That’s only an increase of $487,179 per year (almost a minimum contract per year). Then savings of $3,666,667 and $2,666,667 then next two seasons.

Is this better to anyone else?

I know...my point is

That this contract under the new rules aren’t that bad at all, it’s even better. If the NHL is trying to enforce a higher cap for contracts like these, this isn’t a good way mathematically. It almost encourages teams to sign players til their 42 or 43, with low salaries their last 2 or 3 years.

Just A Question

Is Ilya Kovalchuk the first 1st overall pick to play for the Devils?

Marc R.

by devilssan2 on Sep 3, 2010 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

I think so. I think the highest draft pick the Devils ever had was Scott Niedermayer, and that was a pick the Devils got from trading down to pick Martin Brodeur 20th overall in the draft the year before. One of the pitfalls to perennially making the playoffs is that you don’t draft high. Not that the Devils are hurting because of it. Am I the only one who thinks the #1 overall pick should go to the Stanley Cup Champion? It’s easy to take a nose dive in the standings to draft high. Winning is hard, and I think it should be rewarded.

At the risk of going off-topic and getting nerfed for it…. anyone remember the healthcare bill’s odyssey through Congress last year? How the Congressional leaders and President kept setting out deadlines by which the bill would be passed, over and over? That little fiasco took more than a year start-to-finish. In comparison, our 65-day hostage crisis is a blink of an eye.

But the thing about the bill is that it was forced down congress’ throats. To bad that hasn’t happened yet. But getting back on topic, its just time before this finnaly ends. And BTW, 10pm has passed.

My point was that most deadlines don’t have a whole lot of weight behind them. They’re simply arbitrary, easily fudged, and don’t mean all that much when it comes down to it. Heck, consider how many trades we hear about after the “deadline” on trade deadline day, because there is one delay or another.

Let me ask an annoying question

Are we done?

Seriously, it’s nearly midnight, the last “deadline” was at 10 PM EST, and Dan Rosen last tweeted:

Don’t read into the fact that no other extension was announced after 10 p.m. ET. As far as I know the sides are still working on something.

I don’t think Dan understands how this works – if we’re past the deadline, then the contract’s accepted by default. Of course, the NHL can just pop up and say, “Er, yeah, uh…we’re extending this deadline to (some date)” and this would be moot. I suppose my complaint is really about media coverage dropping ball in probing whether or not there’s yet another extension rather than the extension itself.

I got home from work a half hour ago and have no idea what is going on. When the contract gets passed is it gonna be held under the guidelines of what the NHL and NHLPA are working on right now? Or is it gonna be the last one before these new rule changes are put in.

by C.J. Richey on Sep 4, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

Kovalchuk’s contract will be held to the rules we’re used to, the current rules. This deal is being “grandfathered” in. Only future contracts will be held to the new rules. Kovalchuk’s cap hit will be $6.67M/yr and when he retires, it goes away. All will be good as soon as the approval becomes official (which it isn’t because the NHL/NHLPA is still working on the new rule changes, they’ll finalize everything at once).

Out of everything that was posted about this whole situation, this comment is so appropriate, not just for the final hours, but the whole ordeal. Sums it all up.

Okay, I don’t know if I’m the only one left on here, but as of 1:01 am ET, there is nothing new, except Gulitti’s report of the 2 am deadline, which will be pushed back again likely. It is concerning that it is over ten hours since the deal was supposedly approved. Either way, hopefully there is good news in a few hours when we awake again.

Yea I am calling it also. Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow I will find an Ilya Kovalchuk under the Christmas tree.

I don’t know who said this, but it made TG feel better apparently.

I lied, I’m still up. But this time, I’m probably done.

Let's also hope

that the article saying the NHL has stopped investigating all other contracts and basically letting bygones be bygones means the Devils will not face any penalties for the first contract.

Also, Bill Daly seemed to mirror his comments in that email to John Fischer here when he said “We’re pleased to be able to establish bright line rules for these contracts…”

This is truly exciting

a few random thoughts as I wake up at 7:30

1) What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Hardcore Devils fans went through alot but I think we are all going to be that much more psyched about this season after the perseverance
2) If nothing else, this continues to demonstrate we have a world class GM. To me Lou comes out of this looking quite solid. He basically forced the league to give the GMs clarity on this. I think the other GMs owe him to be honest
3) We also have ownership committed to trying to bring in talent and address problems. Who knows how this will actually work out but at least the team is trying
4) I will actually now probably go to the preseason opener after all this.
5) Kovalchuk’s cap hit is barely more than Wade Redden’s :-)

5) Kovalchuk’s cap hit is exactly the same as Dan Boyle’s and less than players like Backstrom, Datsyuk, Kopitar, Marleau, Iginla, Spezza, and 17 others.

Finally!

I can’t believe this is finally over. I have been glued to Twitter since July 1 and followed this saga into the early morning hours – hitting refresh every five minutes in anticipation of seeing TGFIREANDICE and the 10 or so other accounts i ultimately ended up following on this deal. Guliotti really did a great job covering this story and set himself apart. The guy deserves a vacation.

It’s too early to start with the cap issues and who has to go. For me it’s time to reflect on a masterful summer by Lou, not only landing the biggest free agent to ever hit the market (and if Vegas took bets on that a year ago, you would have made a bundle), but also, in case we forget, putting Volchenkov, Tallinder, Arnott and Moose in the fold and signing Clarkson. Add to it the prospects the team has developed that are NHL ready, and this is not just a ho hum new season, it is a whole new team. This is the future – this is exciting and Lou and Jeff should be congratulated and rewarded.

Yes, there will likely be some short term pain doing what needs to be done to get under the cap, and some reconfiguring of talent to balance the lines, but ultimately, I feel very good about this team. No, I feel great about this team. I have been watching this team since they showed up in NJ (Dad got season tickets the first year) and every fall I think “how is anyone ever going to beat this team?”. Hope springs eternal I guess. The only thing I miss is the days when training camp was wide open to the public. I used to bring a lunch and sit in the steel stands at South Mountain with Chere and the scouts and the other handful of fans. I recall seeing Colin White the first time thinking – geez this dude is huge!.

Ah – September. Time for the rookies to report! This saga made a usually quiet hockey summer fly by, and I am glad it ended on an up note and let’s get it going!.
