NHL 11's Ridiculous Player Rankings
NHL 11 is being officially released tomorrow, so in celebration of that I thought I'd analyze this year's player rankings. The first surprise is admittedly a pleasant one. Alex Ovechkin is ranked a 94 this year, while Crosby is a 93. For those of us who are on "Team Ovechkin" in the Crosby vs. Ovechkin battle, this has to be considered a win. Crosby has been ranked better in just about every hockey video game with the two of them in it as of yet. On to my problems with the rankings. The #1 issue I have with these rankings has to be the goalie rankings. Did they really give Martin Brodeur an 88 ranking and 7 goalies with an 89 or higher. Seriously??? Miller, Luongo, Lundqvist, Kipprusoff, Vokoun, Backstrom and Marc Andre-Fleury are all apparently better goalies than Marty Brodeur. And CAM WARD is also an 88. WHATTT???? Plus they have Bryzgalov at an 87. The EA scouts must be brain dead. Here's some other messed up Devil related rankings: Patrik Elias is an 85, Travis Zajac is an 84 and Rob Davison is a 79 (The same as Tallinder, Greene, Clarkson, and Zubrus) Meanwhile, in other ridiculous rankings news, Robin Reghyr is an 88 (the same as Marty hahahahha) and Derek Boogaard is an 81 (2 points better than Clarky, Zubes and Greene)
Here's the full Devils team player Rankings:
Kovalchuk 91
Parise 89
Brodeur 88
Elias 85
Volchenkov 85
Langenbrunner 85
Zajac 84
Arnott 83
White 82
Salvador 81
Rolston 81
Hedberg 80
Tallinder 79
Davison 79
Clarkson 79
Greene 79
Zubrus 79
Mottau 77
Salmela 76
McAmmond 75
Fraser 75
Zharkov 75
Pelley 75
Leblond 74
Let's all give a big hand to EA for putting Rob Davison on our roster as well as Mottau and McAmmond. After the jump is a list of the top teams based on the average rankings of their top 5 players. Not exactly accurate for ranking the teams as a whole, but for many of the teams, the top 5 players is all that's available at this point. We can call this number every teams star power rankings. (P.S. the Penguins are largely inflated based on Fleury's ridiculous 89 ranking and Malkin's equally ridiculous 92) (By the way these rankings have been confirmed by multiple sources)
1) Pittsburgh: 88.6
2) Detroit: 87.8
2) Vancouver: 87.8
4) Calgary: 87.6
4) New Jersey: 87.6
6) Washington: 87.4
7) Chicago: 87.2
7) San Jose: 87.2
9) Tampa Bay: 86.4
10) Boston: 85.8
11) New York Rangers: 85.6
11) Ottawa: 85.6
13) Philadelphia: 85.4
14) Minnesota: 85.2
15) Anaheim: 85
15) Buffalo: 85
15) Carolina: 85
15) Los Angeles: 85
15) Montreal: 85
20) Dallas: 84.6
21) Columbus: 84.4
22) Florida: 84.2
22) Phoenix: 84.2
24) Edmonton: 83.8
24) Toronto: 83.8
26) Colorado: 83.4
26) St. Louis: 83.4
28) New York Islanders: 83.2
29) Nashville: 83
30) Atlanta: 82.8

Where did you find these? And I could careless. I am still going to dominate with the Devils anyway :)

What they should be
Parise-90
Brody-89/90
Lang-84
Zajac-86/87
Tallinder,Clarkson,Greene-81/82
Zubrus-80/81
andd how is calgary ahead of us when they didn’t even make playoffs? haha
While I do think they rated Brodeur a bit low but not terrible. I guess they do somewhat balance the teams so some players are going to be a bit higher and a bit lower. They overrated Pittsburgh, but besides that we are .2 points off second place which is pretty good in my book. Also for online play they update teams so the number will change. I am happy I can still play as Kovy (he is still on our team) and checking with the A-train is going to be great.
Plus they made this over the last few months so it is not easy to try and predict who is going to be where.
I don’t have an issue with Brodeur’s 88, but I do have an issue if they have so many goalies ahead of him. Lundqvist, Luongo, Miller, and Vokoun are the only ones that in any universe should be ahead, and only by max 4 points at that (I think Miller is tops at 91, by the HUT rating in NHL11 demo).

Derek Boogaard being ranked better than anyone in else in the league is ridiculous. He’s just a giant sack of roid raging muscles on skates.
Marty only an 88? What were they smoking when they made this? Don’t Miller, Luongo, Lundy, Kipper, Vokoun, and Backstrom have a combined ZERO Stanley Cups? Brodeur lead the league last season in Wins (45), Shutouts (9), and was 3rd in GAA (2.24). Having that low a GAA while playing the most games (77) and minutes (4499) shows he still has a ridiculously high level of ability.
NHL 11 is shipping with an awful roster makeup, whether it be player stats or players on the roster. They should have a free downloadable patch once the preseason is over, updating all the rosters to their correct players. Right now the Devils might not have a large handful of those players on the roster when the season starts.

Stanley Cups are a team achievement. While the 1995 Cup was impressive, the 2000 and 2003 Devils I think had top-3 offenses in the league as well. Wins are also a team stat. Shutouts in part are as well (in part—I mean, Brodeur on the Capitals won’t get more than 4 tops). GAA is also a team stat in large part because it does not adjust for shot volume against and special teams. Vokoun definitely deserves to be ahead, and Lundqvist, Miller, and Luongo aren’t big deals if they are. They’re really good.
Niklas Backstrom (Finn) is just ridiculous though. Overrated.
by red army line on Sep 7, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions
That makes no sense. If Wins, SO, GAA, GP, and Cups are all “team stats”, what is left over to rate any goalie by?

Especially even strength
Since power play sv% (meaning shots against are shorthanded—NHL.com lists power play sv% as when the goalie’s team is PKing, which confuses me) is small sample and relatively heavy on odd-man rushes, and shorthanded sv% (when the goalie’s team is PKing) is heavily dependent on the team’s own PK. ESSv% is the best we got. There might be something in consistency—for example, Michal Neuvirth put up similar numbers to Semyon Varlamov, but Neuvirth had more 1/2 GA performances but also more 4+ GA performances—but I think the margin would be quite small.

That’s just not enough of a statistical breakdown to merit ranking goalies by. I agree, SP% is probably best, but it cannot be used alone. Let’s not go overboard on stats alone either, the goalies that make the ‘big saves’ at the right time cannot (or at least have not) be quantitatively ranked.
"Don't worry about my Cap." - Lou Lamoriello
Even that is inconsistent, though. Brodeur hasn’t been making the “clutch” saves—or at least given very few chances, hasn’t made them in the playoffs—since, well, 2003. MAF I thought was clutch but didn’t show it against Montreal. The only guy left, really, is Lundqvist (whenever I watch highlights of Caps-Rangers Game 7 I’m amazed by the amount of ten-belle saves he made, around 5). In short, things like “clutch” or “making the ‘big saves’ at the right time” are not at all sustainable trends, unless you’re Patrick Roy. In big enough sample it breaks down.
The guys at CnB and BtN trend towards looking at save percentages over 3-5 years (which ranks Vokoun, Thomas, Hiller, Luongo, Lundqvist, and Brodeur at the top, in an order I can’t remember save Vokoun is #1). That makes a lot of sense—the good goalies move to the top, the bad ones to the bottom.

I don’t think we are that far off, we are the fourth best team in the game and if you think about it we did finish second in the East. I don’t know how Calgary got up there but Pens and Detroit (even thought I think they are better than the Pens) have always had higher value than they deserve. Then lastly they probably gave Vancouver a really good rating because Samelsson had an unreal ending as did Burrows. Plus you look at the Sedins and the newly revamped Defensive core its kind of understandable. So I am not too disappointed.
IMO we are the best team in the league but with Rolston only being a 81 should be harder to move him now but add hi with a 1st overall you’ll probably get a solid goalie for when Marty retires.

Not sure why you’re all so upset… the ratings are always messed up. When I played regularly I would spend a good day with the game fixing what I felt were either too low or too high of ratings across each team.
And truthfully I never noticed much difference between Goalies ranked 85-90.
What they need to do is weight based on player style. In past years they had to make Sid and AO excellent “defensive awareness” players to get their overall ratings up, but their ratings should be true to talent, but be weighted for what they do (AO extra emphasis on skating, agility, and wrist shot, Sid extra for vision, etc).
My NHL10 screwed up when Kovy got injected mid-season
And Zach/Elias were being bumped up and down between the 2nd and 4th line. I was in Be-A-Pro mode and started the year already after the Kovy trade so my player came from Lowell. By the time my player came over (I was at RW), Zach was 4th line RW and Elias was 2nd line LW. I sure do hope they’ll fix this (though if we do follow the same forward structure now, we’ll have Kovy-Zach-Elias as LW and thus the overload) by at least having the AI determine correctly secondary positions or something. Rolston was playing ahead of Zach. I mean come on!
With the given NHL11 rankings though, I can live with that but I can’t seem to believe that Zajac and Arnott are only 1 stat point in difference. Also, Greene at 79 despite his performance last year is sort of weird. I agree with the point with Brodeur being fine at 88 but the other goalies ahead of him don’t deserve to be there.
They place too heavy an emphasis on past performance and reputation, I think. Someone like Arnott was good in NJ and didn’t get press about his age-related regression in NSH, so it’s assumed he’s as good as before when he comes back to NJ. Souray is a bit in the same boat, people think he’s still good.

broduer
for some reason, people think broduer has fallin off. I have no idea… must be they just don’t get to watch him play enough to make an educated judgement on just how good he still is.
Rankings are pretty decent overall, other than Brodeur, Tallinder, and possibly Clarkson needing to be a few points higher. Thought Tallinder would have been rated higher than Salvador, but there you go.
As a side note, does anyone know if Jacob Josefson is in NHL 11? I’ve found Tedenby Urbom and the rest of the prospects but Josefson doesn’t show up as “in the system” in Be a GM mode. Maybe I’m blind, but if searched everywhere and I can’t find him in the game.
In the demo he’s a 90. Miller is 91. Best player is Ovechkin I think at 94. I favor those rankings over NHL2K, which last time I checked had plenty of guys in the 90+ range. I want it much more limited.

But EA has the very uncap-friendly devils roster currently so salvador is still on the team.

Just picked up the game last night...
Played two quick games against, you guessed it, the Rangers. they ARE ranked high and are rated comparably to the Devils. And by the way, the forwards this year on the Devils are stacked and are capable of scoring really on all three lines. Pretty accurate hopefully to what we see this year in real life. The lines are a little weird as well and I would guess don’t accurately reflect what we will see this year:
Kovalchuk – Zajac – Langenbrunner, with the second line being
Parise – Zubrus – Elias
Rolston – Arnott – Clarkson
Not necessarily bad, but of course these lineups are going to be changed up considerably after the cap is purged.
As far as the game goes, it’s actually quite in depth and fun. They slowed it down a notch or two, but you can adjust the speed if you’d like. There is a bit of a learning curve with the new controls, but thats part of the fun of getting some skill. You create your own player in the beginning, along with a unique player card, and you can totally customize him. This is actually the first EA sports NHL game I have owned in quite some time (I’ve been running with the 2K series since now) But its overall a very entertaining game.

Just got the game
Its awesome as usual. I like the real Devils goal horn now. It sounds like Kevin Clark when they say New Jerrrseeyyy Devilllsss. I now played as the Devils, Oilers, and now the Habs. The GM mode is pretty tough. Its like real life be a gm. I just have to get used to it. As for 2k… Got it 1 year, never bought it again. Fake graphics and everything is animated. Look at this, my first goal scored was with the Devils against the Stars, it was a Brian Rolston slap shot from the left boards. If only that could happen again in real life…..

Yes, I’m glad they used the real Devils horn as well! excellent pickup. And I do agree, although its a different person, he sounds fairly close to Kevin Clark (who I love announcing, among other things, “It’s Time, Once Again, for a PSE&GGGGGG POWEERRRPPLLAAY”). I have yet to try out the GM mode but I definitely will. I’m almost reluctant to update the rosters when that time comes because the Devils are actually really good right now.
I understand what you’re saying with the 2k Series. they actually revamped it significantly about two years ago, but I believe now it’s defunct except and many people consider it inferior as it is.
It’s funny you mention that you scored with Rolston with a slap shot from the left boards…I did the same exact thing last night against Lunqvist. Very interesting, I guess thats his sweet spot in this game.

And I love how the announcer puts emphasis when the home team scores. Last year it was NJ goal scored by…… And I love the music. More known and arena music like Satriani and Sandstorm. Not to mention Megadeth.. Gionta is amazing in this game too playing with Camalleri. I got Troy Brouwer for basically draft picks (BTW, I like how they have 2012 draft picks in trades too) rocking my 2nd line with Gomez and Kostitsyn. I traded Price for Hiller straight up. Got me to the playoffs. Love the game and it will keep getting better every year. I still miss that Scott Stevens game when he was on the cover though…

When I played with my cousin (the 2003 version of Hitz) we’d get into a fight to go 2-on-2, then one guy checks the goalie and the other scores in the net.

Hey Rollie, any tips on scoring and hitting using the default controls? I’m having a little bit of a difficult time getting used to the controls (and I want to learn these as opposed to the classic controls).

I personally like the forehand to backhand move. After that it is much harder to score then in NHL 10. Goalies are much better and games usually are 3-2 or 3-1 compared to 6-4 games.

If Tim was talking about Hitz, gotta go with one-timers from the slot.
In NHL11, backhand-forehand works pretty well too. Playing the demo at least after a while you find you have the time to look and see where the goalie is then pick a spot (after having decided to shoot, just moving your left thumb changes aim quickly). I like going back to the point and firing low slapshots since they can get deflected in (this is much more effective than in previous NHL games). If you have space to walk in from the point, then make sure you take it and slapshot top corner near side.

I don’t have the game, but the demo celebrations are kind of “meh.” I preferred NHL09 choosing your celebrations. What I’d like to see are the Briere/Richards giant fist pump, AO jumping into the glass, the Corey Perry Olympics arms raised, and a really toned down celebration like Marvin Harrison after scoring a touchdown.

Yeah
The only thing I don’t like is the riding the stick. I like the Briere fistpump if its against the Rangers not the Devils. I think you can jump on the glass if your close to it. RS and RT is one knee and fist pumping. I just like picking the celebration. They could do better with them though. Like an Ovechkin celebration, Kovy celebration, and and Patrick Kane celebration.

All three of those celebrations you mentioned are in the game!
If using XBOX 360, for the AO glass jump press press LB and skate towards the glass then press A when you get there. For the Briere/Richards fist pump press X and then move the right stick to pump your fist. For the Corey Perry arms raised celebration hold down LB and skate then press and hold Y.

I just did the jump into glass by pressing A near the boards. I’ll have to check those out.
