According to TG:

According to report in Sweden’s Sportbladet, 32-year-old right wing Marcus Nilson will attend training camp with the Devils as an unsigned unrestricted free agent tryout.

Nilson was teammates in 2009-10 with the Devils’ 2009 first-round draft pick Jacob Josefson on Djurgardens in the Swedish Elite League and led the team with 24 goals, 27 assists and 51 points in 53games. He ranked second in the league in goals, 10th in assists and fifth in points

Having played with Josefson and 521 NHL games, it appears that the Devils are pretty hopeful that Josefson will be on the big club. Expect Nilson to be named a special assignment scout if he doesn’t make the team (and being a LW, the odds are definitely against him making the team).

Why would he be a special assignment scout if he doesn’t make the team??? He’s only 32 and can easily go back to the SEL.

nilson can play both wings just like most european players.

doesn’t make any sense, just like it didn’t make any sense to give andrew peters a tryout or a contract. nilson was finished in the NHL several years ago.

It’s like Eric Chouinard at the rookie camp. If he shows off what he can do well enough, then fine; but I don’t have a lot of high hopes.

meh. chouinard was always going to be on a 2 way deal no matter how that turned out. worst-case scenario there was we have to loan him to some other AHL team.

nilson’s worst-case scenario is that, like pikkarainen, the devils become convinced that late-career improvement in european stats are meaningful, he gets a contract, and produces at a pikkarainen-like level. there are better players available, and more than enough swedes around the team.
