Getting to know Henrik 'Hank' Tallinder

On July 1st the Devils signed Henrik Tallinder as a replacement for Paul Martin who had just signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.   After that signing, a quick flurry of activity occurred ranging from the signings of Anton Volchenkov and Johan Hedberg and to the possibility of re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk.  Then the Kovalchuk saga dominated Devils news for the next two months.  Since the Kovalchuk saga is now over (with only the 2010 Roster Purge remaining) I wanted to circle back and learn a little bit about Tallinder.

I contacted Andy Baron over at SBN Buffalo Sabres site: www.DiebytheBlade.com to ask him some general questions about Tallinder so that we can get a sense of the type of player he is and what to expect.   I also provided him with some answers to questions he had about Rob Niedermayer, who Buffalo signed as a free agent. Once that link is active I will update this post or post a new fanshot to direct everyone to it.

Tom: Andy, as a Buffalo fan I am sure you have a strong opinion here so I will first ask you whether you were for or against re-signing Tallinder?

Andy: Personally, I would have liked to re-sign Hank, as he's a steady defensive defenseman, a fan favorite of many, and made a heck of a partner for Tyler Myers. The problem for the Sabres is always price and the front office obviously thought they could find a better bargain out there, and probably get younger at the same time.

Tom: While he hasn't been advertised as an offensive minded defenseman, there has been talk that Tallinder has a good first pass out of the defensive zone to start the offensive rush.  Is that something you noticed while he played for the Sabres?

Andy: Tallinder makes a fine first pass, but I wouldn't say it's anything to get overly excited about. He's careful with the puck in his own zone and won't make too many mistakes, but he's not usually the guy to make that "Wow!" pass either. However, his ability to do so this season was eclipsed by Tyler "The Ultimate Puck Carrier" Myers, so perhaps his first pass is laying dormant in there somewhere.

Tom: Lou Lamoriello has made it a point to mention how Tallinder was partly brought in to help mentor our young defensemen (namely fellow Swede Alexander Urbom).   How much impact-if any-did you see Tallinder have on Tyler Myers game?

Andy: The Tallinder-Myers pairing worked out incredibly well for the Sabres, thanks in large part to the steadiness of Tallinder. I love Tyler Myers with all my heart as any good Sabres fan ought to, but Myers made his fair share of rookie mistakes to go along with the highlights (shh...don't tell anyone.) The fact that Tallinder was always back there to bail him out or to calm things down on the next shift really helped Myers to play with confidence, even after a poor decision, and you could see that confidence grow as the season progressed.

Tom: Buffalo was very successful last year on the penalty kill as they improved by 12 spots from the previous year in penalty killing percentage and Tallinder has played some pretty big minutes on that unit during both years. Was he an integral part of the success or was the success due to Myer's time and/or Mike Grier's time on the penalty kill?

Andy: Hank's been a steady (there's that word again) member of the PK for many years around here, but I think the additions of Myers and Grier, along with the team's renewed commitment to Lindy Ruff's "Total Team Defense" system all played equal roles in last year's dramatic improvement. I would expect Tallinder to keep logging those big PK minutes for the Devils, and I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with any of them.

I want to thank Andy again for taking the time to give us his thoughts on Henrik 'Hank' Tallinder.  So now it's your turn Devils fans....What are your expectations for Tallinder this year?  Will he be the same player without Tyler Myers?  Sound off below!  Shall we call him Hank or Henrik?  I vote for Hank.

How about King Henrik? I kind of like the ring of that one.

I think Andy used the word to describe him I would most hope he was: steady. Ideally I’d like him to be a steadying presence on the second line, an effective contributor on the (hopefully improved) PK and a mentor to the kids.

If he can do those three things, he’s worth every penny.

lol, king henrik is the ranger fans name for lundqvist.

And Tallinder should be able to do all of that. He’s a great shutdown d-man that you shouldn’t have to worry about at all. He can do his job well and must have done wonders with myers to play like he did.

hence the joke man haha. I hope whatever rookie makes this team (it’s all but a guarantee one will) plays with Hank (also my choice of name; King Henrik is too rangery for my tastes and just flows better than Henrik, although Henrik works if he ever makes a fine play for a chant).

I know 2nd line minutes are tough on a rookie, but if he is as steady as he’s been advertised, he’ll make that rookie better and easier acclimated to the NHL than if he was given little time on the third pairing.

I’ve always said, if Henrik was King, that makes Marty, Roy, and Hasek Gods.

Heh. I’ve always wondered about the nickname, honestly.

My standard response to those that try to rub his nickname in my face is that he can’t be a king without a crown… and as of yet he’s yet to even win a divisional crown.

It’s all good. Just title them if it’s in a gamethread/open thread just so people can collapse them.

Ahh, Hank

A real manly man’s name. Steady is a perfect fit for NJ system. Don’t really know a lot about him, but that’s not really rare for the solid, no flash kinda guys. I hope he’s able to mentor the young D in the system, their time is coming soon. Seeing success in the task is a big help, and I’m sure that’s what sold Lou on him.

I see second pair with Urbom/Eckford, PK time.

Andy is right on about Tallinder

From whatching the SABRES on center ice & msg Andy’s
statement’s are very accurate. He is good D-man you
can depend on him to be in the right place ,very good at
closeing the gap. He wil get the puck out of danger and
in to the nutral zone, for atack or A change ,ext. This is A
upgrade for the team

by Ed Foeri on Sep 9, 2010 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

he is NOT Paul Martin, he is NOT Paul Martin

I know people have varying opinions on how big or small a loss Paul Martin was, but let’s please not expect Tallinder to be Martin or to perform a similar function. Just because he was signed in response to Martin’s departure doesn’t mean he’ll carry the puck up the ice and quarterback the PP the way Martin did. In fact, I’m not so sure Tallinder will play on the PP at all. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Devils went with 5 forwards for one PP unit and 4 forwards + Greene for the other PP unit, or gave one of the kids on defense a shot to quarterback the PP.

Nice job with this article Tom.

I don’t think anyone is expecting him to replace Martin completely… it’s still an upgrade for the defense though.

Should I bring a drum to the games?

BOOM BOOM Henrik! BOOM BOOM Henrik!

Tallinder probably should not play on any sort of power play that wants to be good. He almost never saw PP time for the Sabres, and we had an awful PP unit. Nor will he be any sort of puck carrier/rush starter. But he’s very dependable in his own zone and should see some nice PK time for the Devils.

If anyone else has any questions about Tallinder, I’ll lurk around here and answer them as best I can.

What do you think of the Sabres off-season? Lost Tallinder and Lydman and brought in Leopold and Morrision.

Mathew Barnaby to Lyle Odelein: "Cornelius, as we like to call him, gets under your skin. Planet of the Apes. Look at him. Seriously. He looks like Cornelious."

Odelein to Barnaby: "He should take a look at his wife. She's God-awful to look at."

by RolliePollieKovy on Sep 9, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The general fan’s consensus right now is Leopold + Morrisonn = younger and cheaper Lydman + Tallinder. They’ll have to prove it first, but I generally like the pair along with signing Niedermayer.

Most people wanted the team to make a big splash in free agency or through a trade and shake things up, but this front office has proven year after year that they don’t run the team that way so I’m not sure why the fans were so disappointed when the only signings were role-players. I think they’ll help the team, but the odds of Leopold, Morrisonn, and Niedermayer being the guys that “push your team to the next level” are slim.

by Andy Boron on Sep 9, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Any possibility the Sabres power play was awful in part BECAUSE Tallinder didn’t play on it? I mean, if it was that bad, why not try different personnel?

Probably not. He’s never had more than six goals per season in his career, and finished the season with just one goal three out of seven times. He doesn’t have a great shot, nor is he a PP quarterback type of passer/decision maker. Tallinder is very much a defense-first kind of defenseman.

The big question is, who is Tallinder going to be paired with?

If he’s not that much of a puck mover, should we have Greene on the 1st line with A-train? If Urbom makes the team would he be paired with Tallinder? That would leave White and Fraser together.

by MoonDragn on Sep 10, 2010 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

Either way you’re looking at one solidly defensive pairing, but based on Tallinder’s work with Myers last season, you’re thinking seems reasonable.

Yes, whatever defensive prospect makes the team will get Hank time. It’s one of the reasons Hank was signed. He’s a brilliant selection to “cover” for the rookie mistakes as the maturation process progresses.
