Gulitti: Matt Corrente Out 2-4 Weeks with Shoulder Injury
Tom Gulitti reported earlier today at Fire & Ice that Corrente is out for 2-4 weeks for a shoulder injury sustained in a fight against Steve Downie in Friday's 5-2 win in Tampa Bay. Perhaps he will learn from this to fight less in the future. Perhaps.
Expect the #6 defenseman role to be locked by Mark Fayne, Anssi Salmela (up to 10 games before going through re-entry waivers), or someone else for a while. Feel free to make your argument in the comments. Please do not suggest Alexander Urbom - if he plays 3 more games, his ELC officially gets on New Jersey's already-bloated cap. Update: Urbom's 20, suggest him all you want.

Albany Options
The only new choices are Harry Young/Dan Kelly.
Other options would include Tyler Eckford, Olivier Magnan, Rob Davison.

I would like to see what Lemaire could do with Olivier Magnan. While he isn’t an offensive defenseman he does have some size, decent skating and a nose for staying out of the penalty box.

Good call. I agree. I would prefer him to Mark Fayne personally. With his contract expiring at the end of the year you might as well see what he can do.

If Taormina is cleared to begin skating again later this week, perhaps he’ll be ready to return before Corrente. I think it’s important for the organization to take a closer look at Taormina in order to get a better sense of where he’ll be next season. His development could influence their decision whether or not to re-sign Greene in the off-season.
Perhaps this observation is a bit pre-mature, but it seems that MacLean and Lemaire both have “their guys” in terms of which prospects they prefer to call up. For MacLean, he was partial to Taormina, OMG, Vasyunov, and Tedenby. Shortly after his return, Lemaire called up Zharkov and Palmieri. I don’t believe that OMG or Vasyunov played a game under him. And we all know that Lemaire took issue with Tedenby’s defensive effort (or lack thereof). I wonder what this observation means, if anything. Hopefully Lemaire gives Taormina a shot once he’s healthy.

I wouldn’t mind Eckford getting a shot to play, this is the last year on his ELC if I am not mistaken and it would be nice to see what the kid has. There isn’t anything to lose so we can give him some real ice time and find out if he is as good as we thought he was going to be last year (he made the AHL all-star team).

John,
I don’t really understand your point wrt Urbom, his contract doesn’t slide. He could hit a bonus or two, but the Devils will be below the cap by the end of the season when Arnott gets traded, so they wouldn’t have to worry about that.
Wait, you're right.
I just realized Urbom’s 20. He already had his one year slid and that’s that. So the Devils can use him as much as possible.
I’ll go amend the post.

No, I think you are right
In the event that a Player signs his first SPC at age 18 and has had his SPC extended pursuant to Subsection (i), and such Player does not play at least ten (10) NHL Games in the second season under that SPC, then the term of his SPC and his number of years in the Entry Level System shall be extended for one (1) additional year.
.
Urbom was 18 when he signed his deal and has had his contract slide already. Seems to me he can have it slide one more time.

According to the Devils’ capgeek page, Urbom is not eligible for another slide (there is no SR next to his name).

They have been wrong before. In fact, they have Kory Nagy listed as a defenseman when he is a center.

Kory Nagy is in the ECHL, so I won't hold it against them for getting his info wrong.

I think your right about him having another slide year. Capgeek is great and pretty accurate but they don’t always catch everything.

I believe that Urbom is considered a 20 year old player because his 20th birthday is before January 1, 2011.
or possibly not.
Age of Players. As used in this Article, “age,” including “First SPC Signing Age,” means a Player’s age on September 15 of the calendar year in which he signs an SPC, regardless of his actual age on the date he signs such SPC.
But it’s difficult to tell. Either way, I don’t think Urbom should be brought up.
Damn, we need to have a lawyer on retainer.

I think CapGeek may very well be wrong on this – hopefully it’s true and this has been part of Lou’s plan. I think he would have been called up by now if his contract wasn’t eligible for the slide rule. I’m quite happy seeing Josefson and Urbom get big minutes in the AHL during this waste of a season to allow their contracts to slide.
According to Gulitti, he signed in 2009. He was born on December 20, 1990; so he was 18 when he signed the deal. One year slid and now…it should slide again? So why doesn’t CapGeek have the SR notation on his page? I’ll send an email to the admin and see what I can learn.

Capgeek has been updated. Urby is now officially a slider.

Yep. There was a bug for players born between Sept. 16 and Dec. 31 who had one year slid already, so it’s not just Urbom who’s corrected.
All the more reason to keep him in Albany.

Sorry you're hurt Matt
but I wouldn’t be too upset if you didn’t hurry back, although the next Ranger game is just over 2 weeks away, maybe it would be nice to see you back soon so you can lay out Avery a couple more times.
